I was looking at one of my guitars the other day and the thought just popped into my head "I wonder why you never see guitar fretboard made into anything. I bet I could make a set of grips or knife scales or something..." The edges of the frets are sharp as fuck. It took a lot of dressing to get them to not be dangerous
That is absolutely awesome!
You've probably thought about this, but it's worth mentioning to anyone contemplating grabbing a busted guitar off Craigslist and trying this at home: Beware of "fret sprout,'" which is when a fretboard shrinks in low humidity, but the metal doesn't, and the now-sharp fret ends protrude from the sides of the wood. It's one thing on a guitar, but it'll be something completely different on a .45 in full recoil.
You know... I didn't even think about that. I did get the frets hot as shit while sanding them. I used a 1x30 belt grinder with 240g belt for most of it, so maybe the metal will have expanded while getting cut down, and once cool will contract? Maybe? I don't know. I guess we will find out.
Honestly, as much as I sanded the frets down, they don't really feel much different from regular wood slab grips. One of the frets is all fucky where I drilled. I'm gonna find another busted guitar neck and try again at some point. There are a few things I'd do differently.
It's a nighthawk frame with Colt MkIV series 70 slide. I built it a year or two ago. It was intended to be a clone of the pistol Arnie uses in T2. It's not clone correct, (that one was chambered in 9mm and used a fucking hen's teeth rare detonics frame), but it's close enough to scratch the itch I had.
Thanks. There are a few things that I'm going to do differently if I make another set, but overall for a rough draft. I'm pretty happy with how they came out
Because I love old guitars, 1911s; and in particular, beat up, wierd, two or more tone 1911s I think this this is fucking sick and I love it. I really like how you "dressed" the frets on the right side. I may have to try something similar. Stewart MacDonald used to (and may still) sell a type of fretwire they called low-wide, that was intended to be used for partial refrets on old guitars, I may have to engage in some experiments. Nice work.
Looks bad ass but not comfortable. You must not shoot it much! I guess your a man's man not worried about the lead poisoning that will be running through your blood stream as your hand is chaffed like a asshole at a colonoscopy party!
Fucking metal
Sunovabitch l need to try this now

Them embedding into your hand just gives you extra grip š
The blood gets tacky after a minute or two. Helps it stick.
The true grip enhancer is the blood you sacrificed to your pistol.

Keeping them oiled up will probably help, and if the neck is old enough, it's possible that the wood has shrunk all it's going to already.
It was definitely an older chunk of wood. We will see. They're not perfect anyway. I'm kind of treating this pair as "rough draft v1".
All them gibson guys will be picking up 1911s now.
This is the š©, have an old neck in the garage, ITāS GOING DOWN. THIS IS AWESOME. šššø

This is really cool. How's it handle--does it grip better?
