More related to the first post, the Germans fear of the Canadians in WWI was less about them being a super effective fighting force, and more that they had a habit for executing POWs and shit like that.
The Canadians were volunteers in a time where most soldiers were conscripts. The Germans considered them highly motivated shock troops. By all accounts they were extremely effective.
The Canadians developed a habit of not taking prisoners after a battle in which the Germans did not take prisoners and executed POWs, and tit for tat killings became the norm. It became expected that when Germans fought Canadians, they did not take prisoners, and vice versa.
The Canadians did commit a bunch of war crimes too, and I'm not excusing that, but it's important to understand the context that the Germans were not innocent during this.
Later Canadian forces did keep the tendency for being highly aggressive and this led to a toxic culture that produced a lot of war crimes.
Canadians only get the moniker of polite because we generally keep to ourselves since we're used to the passive aggressiveness that we exude. We're an angry little bunch of folk tbh
I know germans considered Canadian forces to be the shock troops of the triple entente, but didn’t germans grow to dislike canadian soldiers because Canadian forces had on multiple occasions decided to take no prisoners in some engagements? I don’t remember where i heard or read that so i don’t know if its true.
I always heard that that's true, but that Canadian troops started taking no prisoners in response to Germans doing the same to them once (proportionalresponse.exe)
For the record this is widely believed to have been an ignorant mistake, and the speaker of the house resigned over it. Most Canadians were just as horrified as everyone else when the news broke
Dont let OP hear about the fate of the Canadian Airborne Regiment.
What happened to em?

So they weren’t even good at fighting, they just tourtured people who couldn’t fight back?

Thank you for the explanation!
heard one story that a Canadian put a grenade in a POWs trench coat pocket
Canadians are apologetic: Weak and False (they are passive aggressive, big difference) Canadians are war criminals: Strong and Demonstrably True

For the record this is widely believed to have been an ignorant mistake, and the speaker of the house resigned over it. Most Canadians were just as horrified as everyone else when the news broke
At one point they threw cans of food over to the enemy lines and when a group gathered at the kindness the Canadians started throwing live grenades
