Moonbear9

Nu uh there's red right there :3 :3 :3 it's oki it took me a while too

cloartist

Look again: šŸŸ„ Bet you feel really stupid now, no red in sight

Moonbear9

Oh silly I always feel stupid :3

cloartist

Lmao smae :3

SOMETHINGcooler5

Yes there is https://preview.redd.it/x1jchgd4cuxc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=13e14a66f24f41d0b8755526500455c8cee16cd1

KR_Kosmik

Yeah cause you added a big red circle.

Strawberry_cereal

XD

MeiNeedsMoreBuffs

Exactly, there's still red light being emitted in the image and your brain is picking it up. This is like those videos where someone converts a song with lyrics to a midi and plays it on a piano and says "there's no lyrics" even though the lyrics are still there, they're just being played on the piano keys

Hi_Peeps_Its_Me

uhhh that's like not what rgb does: this effect would still show up with paint i think you're arguing that pixels are an optical illusion (with or without your knowledge) which isn't really relevant to this other optical illusion

Dogtor-Watson

Yeah, itā€™s like saying that this colour is actually red and green. Thereā€™ll be red and green in the pixels, but itā€™s blue. https://preview.redd.it/karq7cwjyyxc1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c7a98b99a2b64404018d8bad585e2cfac5b5c057

MakeAByte

This is not the way to think about it. The red there is just a component of the cyan. You could just as well physically paint all the pixels of this image so that you just had the cyan wavelength and there truly was no red and the effect would be the same. You see red because your brain sees the lighting of the image as cyan, and determines that in these lighting conditions the white it sees from the Coke can could only result from the can being red. So even though no red light is hitting your eye (your eye is not high res enough to see the red from the subpixels), you see red.

arbobendik

You couldn't. The effect is only working because of the white in there. There is no white or pale cyan wavelength (this is not a pure cyan) only a mix of wavelengths can create this color and therefore even without a RGB-screen, you would need some red wavelengths emitting from your lightsource that are not totally absorbed by the paint to get the effect.

UncertaintyLich

The lyrics are not there lol. Piano keys cannot recreate fucking vowels and consonants that would be insane dude

BipolarKebab

>Exactly, there's still red light being emitted in the image and your brain is picking it up.Ā  No it's fucking not.

Dofork

Do you have a link to one of those? I want to see it but I donā€™t know what to search.

MeiNeedsMoreBuffs

Here you goĀ https://youtu.be/ZY6h3pKqYI0?si=27cFVgorRbH7dyO5

BobMarker

Illusion really disappears when there's actually no red in it lol https://preview.redd.it/bdyvu8s2ovxc1.png?width=1170&format=png&auto=webp&s=f56d64231dacf1e34a505c281fc8f529316c0a8e

LonelySpaghetto1

You can make it reappear (partially) by lowering the luminosity of formerly cyan pixels.

Ugly_Smegma_Dick

Why'd you post a red square?

Misan_UwU

its not red, its actually white but your brain sees it as red due to the surrounding color, cyan, being opposite from red

jan_elije

red is a component of white

Dogtor-Watson

Yeah, but if I ask you what colour this white circle: āšŖļø is, youā€™re not gonna say red are you?

Strawberry_cereal

Itā€™s obviously magenta

Atreides-42

But if you said "This circle contains no red" you'd be lying

Cale111

That also made all the white blue. You wouldnā€™t say white is red, but it does have a fully red rgb value. There is no actual red in the original, regardless of the rgb values

Dogtor-Watson

You have removed all the white. The white is what causes you to see the red, as your brain tricks you into thinking that thereā€™s cyan lighting. [This comment explains it better than I can](https://www.reddit.com/r/196/s/sRLu706krl). Thereā€™s technically red in the white, but you wouldnā€™t call this red: https://preview.redd.it/3les6fx40zxc1.jpeg?width=180&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4f3ead8b984631b31581e0c69c0e7fb39a42add4

scrpter

thats gotta be red

TheWM_

It's because OP shared a shitty screenshot, the original actually has no red

alexanderthemeh

I wonder how much work the coke logo is doing subliminally

No-Distribution4287

My theory is that because the coke logo is associated with being white, and is blue here is shifts the whole image to appear more red

MaybeNext-Monday

Yeah itā€™s just reference frames. Same reason you can tell what colors things are in tinted light.

loptopandbingo

Sodium light [be like](https://youtu.be/riZcq-MN55s?si=k4zW3m6QAvaUP5aV)

AlveolarThrill

Specifically low pressure sodium lamps. High pressure sodium lamps arenā€™t monochromatic, as anyone around older street lamps can confirm.

TheDonutPug

Genuinely yeah, I noticed when I covered the coke logo it became much easier to perceive no red.

cogpsychbois

Probably a lot. It's now pretty well accepted that our expectations drive our perceptions. We have an expectation about what color cans with the coke logo are supposed to be. Ergo, the presence of the logo biases us to see red when none is present.

cherr77

Idk I saw red at first glance

[deleted]

Congratulations you broke the mind of a person who is already mentally broken šŸ‘

Shergak

Good on my brain for adding in colour where there is none.

Cammins

Maaan fuck your pfp. I like it.

Shergak

Thank you.

Babyback-the-Butcher

How does that work? Edit: Ok I know how it works now. No need to explain anymore

luxusbuerg

Feds invaded your brain

The_Bingler

Seeing a lot of green where youre used to seeing much less colour causes your vision processing to compensate. The fact that its a very recognizable object that is normally bright red helps.

Phoenix_Studios

brain has extremely good auto white balance. By shifting the entire image's colour space away from red but keeping the relative colour proportions the same you can get away with an image that has very limited colours but your brain will compensate.

Nahanoj_Zavizad

Eyes don't see good Brain fills in the gaps. Things normally arnt all blue, so it tries to make it look less blue

GoogaNautGod

All images on a screen are rendered using a combination of red, green, and blue. There's nothing totally red, but the blue in the can has more red than the surrounding colours, making it contextually/relatively appear as red.

Hi_Peeps_Its_Me

no

Primary-Paper-5128

Everytime you think you understand color theory something like this hits you in the crotch

dicksnapper9000

Is the title telling the truth. Is there actually no red. Cause I don't see any red. But I usually don't see red very well. am I being fucked with again

KamikazeArchon

There are no red pixels; however, for "standard vision", the contrast of cyan, black, and white - in a particular pattern that implies shadows etc - generates an optical illusion that causes white pixels to appear red.

dicksnapper9000

Oh that's wild

The_Sovien_Rug-37

if you cover the coke logo with your fingers, the rest of the can settles back into monochrome

DropInTheOcean1247

Oh it's super neat how the can looks more red the farther away you view it

xle3p

McCarthyism

ohcytt

Idk bruh looks pretty red right there

MOltho

It works because the black is contrasted against turqouise in some parts of the image, and against white in other parts. That and we know the thing is usually red

herpthederp256

MS DOS type beat

Cammins

You fuck, there indeed isn't.

screenshotted the mobile mini version, that's red. https://preview.redd.it/wowve7xgezxc1.jpeg?width=113&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=41bc10b04c6208960773d69d42c8ad1069d13fb0

Vivacious4D

It's actually still at most gray with a hint of pink, with the highest pink-direction saturation being around 7% (basically still gray)

Important_Ad_7416

This is sooo coool. This would make for a great painting to entertain guests, just imagine them moving their head in and out trying to see the red fad away.

bartolomeogregoryii

Are you a magician?

Dargorod100

Brain interpretation my beloved

DreadDiana

Am I supposed to see red? The can is just a mix of black, white, and blue

EngineStraight

wonder if it'd work with something other than a coke can, like just a sharpie

CynLarroner

Technically, white is a combination of red and the other colours, so...

Ferrilata_

Holy shit

guney2811butbetter

the fuck?

Alidonis

Oh come on!

MookSmilliams

Bait is supposed to be believable

Gru-some

duh obviously

vvownido

i can override the illusion for just a fraction of a second

2_IQ_at_anything

I knowĀ

arsonconnor

Define red. Cause theres red in that picture to me lmao

Warm-Faithlessness11

Zoom in on the red sections and the red disappears. It's an optical illusion

arsonconnor

That doesnt remove the red from the picture tho, its still red when you zoom out

Strawberry_cereal

Thatā€™s not how it works

arsonconnor

I mean im looking at it mate, theres red right there

Strawberry_cereal

Cover the coke canā€™s logo and youā€™ll see it better

hatchetthehacker

this shit is just a black and white image what are yall on im colorblind so i see this for what it is

Apprehensive-Use38

Clor theery is so kool

Royalehigh_alt

actually, one of blacks are on the red color spectrum! https://preview.redd.it/9t2drkvjjwxc1.png?width=323&format=png&auto=webp&s=7f62c765115714d176d9d09c009761f0133c79f1

invitinghome122

Well that's fine, I didn't need any.

FrozenPizza07

Is it my turn to repost yet?

Strawberry_cereal

No

babysealmoneygang

No there is dummy šŸ˜ƒ

HkayakH

oh i see how it works. the surrounding blue parts creates a 'red vacuum' It's kind of like when you're starving, a single grape is amazing. There is literally negative red so the white or 'neutral' part seems red

TheBlueHypergiant

It looks red and then it just turns white

NFIGUY

Kinda weird how the colors that contrast each other on the color scale are so similar to the colors of the cans and the glass bottlesā€¦

PM_Me_Modal_Jazz

I mean, if you're looking at this on an RGB display, there is red

I-am-THEdragon

Ah my silly little neurons are correcting for the amount of cyan in the image by interpreting white as red. How amusing.Ā

balrog111

idk, I can't see anything with this horrendous quality

plaugedoctorbitch

how do i see through the illusion it looks red to me no matter what i do
