time to give this to my players :D
So there's this guy who enters the building
He meets a woman and asks where to go
He then meets a man who shows him the way
He sees a woman laying in a bed
[fr fr but this summary is heavily exaggerated, βHe also cited personal experience: an unplanned pregnancy and subsequent miscarriage that broke him out of a βtoxicβ relationship that he had been in in college. He drew on that experience for the comicβ](https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2015/11/longest-running-miscarriage-meme-on-the-web.html)
Reading the article, I think most people riff on Loss is not because they're joking about miscarriage, but joking about how weird it is that someone would put a comic about miscarriage in their series usually joking about video games.
I was a regular reader of the comic. When Loss came out, me and my friends stared at it like it was an incomprehensible alien signal for an hour, then forgot about it.
I think we simultaneously stopped reading the comic all at once, I can't remember at all how they followed it up.
I thought it was going to be a cool joke like the whiner saying shit like, "4e is shit bcuz it ruins my op wizard build" and him responding, "ya but it gives martials more cool abilities and balances out the martial caster disparity and makes the game more team focused" but nah, it's just player, "ree why cant i fight dragon at lvl one and be op" dm, "you're so annoying pls die"
i guess i shouldn't've expected more from the guy who made loss
>i guess i shouldn't've expected more from the guy who made loss
Wait tho, here's the thing: if Loss had a less cartoony art style, and actually fit in the context of the story, it would have *hit hard*.
Think about the comic in its raw form: not a word spokenβa distraught man enters the hospital, rushes to the front desi person, then to the doctor, to see his wife, previously pregnant with new life, teary-eyed, turned away from him, as they both live through a life changing trauma.
These four panels would have worked if they weren't sandwiched between a *COMEDY GAMING WEBCOMIC*.
A comedy gaming webcomic *where people with opinions the author doesn't like get violently murdered over and over and over whenever the author is feeling peevish,* and the character who miscarried had already been the subject of 1000 cheap titty jokes.
Honestly, Scott Ramsoomair of comedy gaming webcomic VG Cats [could have MAYBE pulled it off](https://www.vgcats.com/comics/?strip_id=290) if he'd lost his mind and abandoned all self-respect. But there is no universe in which Tim fucking Buckley could touch that subject with any dignity, no matter what his comic was about.
I was a reader as well, and I was thinking βhow are they gonna write themselves out of the corner of baby, because weβre getting a switch into long arc stories of Alice of life variety.
Then Loss happened and I was like βhuh, bold, letβs get back to funnyβ.
I've seen people break it down scientifically. Like in comics, the size of the panel denotes to the reader importance of what's happening. So him finding her in the bed looks as important as walking in the front door and going to the front counter. So if you made it so the top panel was large, the panels of him at the front desk and talking to the doctor were small, and the last panel wide, it doesn't look comically ridiculous
Like imagine if you read a Superman comic and suddenly one page showed him fighting and getting killed by someone but all the panels are the same size
both the story and non-story comics were just lame gamer comic humor until this comes out of nowhere and introduces a miscarriage subplot that stays for quite a bit afterwards
it would be like if spongebob had an episode about patrick dying of a heart attack portrayed with complete sincerity and he stopped appearing in episodes after that
[fr fr but this summary is heavily exaggerated, βHe also cited personal experience: an unplanned pregnancy and subsequent miscarriage that broke him out of a βtoxicβ relationship that he had been in in college. Wait wait wait, it was *his girlfriend* that had the miscarriage!? I thought it was kinda insensitive when I thought the comic was about some friend! Bloody fuck.
Because some right winger is gonna misread it as saying she was the one who miscarried and try to report her for having an "abortion". Same reason people are uninstalling their period apps.
I don't know for sure, but if I had to guess, that.
Not to get too serious but art is a way alot of people deal with a LOSS. Not that the comic was a good comic or that the place was a good a place to post that stuff maybe or the his gf even wanted that idk
It's not based on a real event. the reality is that he was planning a new character for his webcomic but then changed his mind, so the first solution that came to his mind was a miscarriage so that the new character wouldn't be conceived.

Been a while since I saw this referenced.
I wonder what the other hundred people were thinking when they upvoted it because there's no way that many people recognized it
Possibly just zombified automatic upvoting, I do it sometimes myself.
This could only be better if you added a random capital letter on the 2nd and 3rd line. Or to be more discrete, change those to two sentences each.

That's because it is a strip, which generally don't play much with composition
Yeah but thats also why you don't do shit like this in a gag comic
Not really the case in a comic which pretty much always uses 4 equally-sized panels
Yeah cause that's how you make gag comics. Not how you try to convey something emotional
Because it has a story, and that comic played into it, that's what most fail to understand even though that's kinda the point of it up until it ended
both the story and non-story comics were just lame gamer comic humor until this comes out of nowhere and introduces a miscarriage subplot that stays for quite a bit afterwards it would be like if spongebob had an episode about patrick dying of a heart attack portrayed with complete sincerity and he stopped appearing in episodes after that
