I know there are a ton of comments about this being a sign of diabetes, but I also wanted to add that my A1C and glucose levels are always well within normal range and I have this same kind/location of skin tags. Some people are just prone to them.

midwest_is_best

Yeah, I’ve had bloodwork super recently and my husband is a dr so he’s well aware of other symptoms. I’m not worried about the cause, just want to try to prevent them and figure out how to get them off my neck without scarring! I know they aren’t big and noticeable but they make me feel old and weird haha

Dafadami

Castor oil is getting a lot of hype lately and I’ve read SEVERAL anecdotal posts/comments of people applying castor oil to skin tags daily and they’re disappearing after about a month. A $15 bottle of castor oil might be worth trying.

midwest_is_best

I got talked into a bottle of castor oil like a month ago and never use it - good to know!

KingoftheChillll

I got a bunch on my neck when pregnant in the same area. I had them cryro frozen at the dermatologist, no scarring.

HomeworkIndependent3

I'm currently pregnant and have a lot now, though I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. I hate looking at my neck now, I'm so self conscious about it. Once my little one is here (1 month left) I'll ask my doctor about seeing a dermatologist for it. Thank you for your comment, makes me feel not so alone!

AdCapital1754

Nail clippers

Vrayea25

Same.

LaLaLaurensmith

Same

EatsAlotOfBread

Same. I get blood tested every half year for unrelated issue (thyroid) and they do glucose too. Also if one got big enough I'd just cut it off with (sanitised) scissors like some kind of freak lol. It doesn't even hurt. Would not recommend, but I don't seem to follow my own advice. However since a year ago they've pretty much stopped coming in. I wonder what happened. Edit: Stopped birth control! That must have been related then!

Spazmer

I've done IVF a few times and the high dose estrogen leading up to the embryo transfers caused skin tags all over, which I don't deal with otherwise. So I agree with your birth control theory! I pinch the long ones off with my fingernails, should follow the sanitized scissors route... though I'm also at a loss for the short ones.

EatsAlotOfBread

They eventually just disappear. I guess it's from exfoliation. I have some of those Korean exfoliating glove things that I use every now and then. (Be very gentle, they're not supposed to scrape your tags off, it's supposed to just help it all along over a longer period of time. NEVER use it on the face, it will hurt terribly and you'll get those little burst vessels!) My skin is always baby soft with those things, they're like magic. But you have to be careful.           You take a nice warm shower (probably even better if you take a bath), wash with shower gel. Your skin will get nice and soaked and the dead skin cells will be loosened a bit and then you gently rub the gloves on your skin (no soap) and the dead skin cells will visibly rub off in little rolled bits. Looks gross but it's so satisfying. It's not supposed to hurt btw. Then just shower off and voilà. Use some gentle cream (not with perfume), I just use Nivea body lotion.

claravelle-nazal

My mum always had a lot! Even when she was young, but never had issues with sugar levels even 30 years later

smart_cereal

My blood work is all good too and this issue runs in the family.

nimue57

I have the same thing and I think it might be caused by friction from my cross body bag bc I only get them on one side. I don't want to give up my bag so I just try to switch up the side I wear it on

midwest_is_best

Yeah, i also believe it's friction. Unfortunately, I'm short and the seatbelt in my car rubs against my neck and I can't do much about it. I try to pull my shirts to cover the area when I think about it to put a barrier between, but I'm still getting these little guys. Sigh.

ithinkwereallfucked

Seat belt adjusters that can help!

lolliberryx

Seat belt covers! They wrap around a small portion of the seatbelt. My seatbelt rubs against my neck and chest (super annoying in the warmer months) so the covers help a lot. They’re also really cute. Mine has a plush strawberry on it. :)

midwest_is_best

Looks like I need one!

nimue57

Well it's not very noticeable fwiw. If it really bothers you maybe you could wrap a scarf around the seat belt and secure it in place?

No-Pressure-5762

I started getting these in my late 30s and it was annoying. The raised ones make you want to pick at them. My dermatologist removed mine. They do have to burn them off which sucks but the down time is like a week or so as they heal. Opt for the numbing cream if you can to make it less painful. The medical term for it is keratosis something. It’s not caused by anything my doctor says. They can be this color or flesh colored.

SalientSazon

Insulin resistance can cause them.

No-Pressure-5762

Getting rid of your insulin resistance doesn’t make them go away.

SalientSazon

correct.

getanewr00f

I’ve used Drew Scholls Skin Tag remover with some success.

Mike-Teevee

What do you mean “some success”? Am prone to them and interested in otc solutions

getanewr00f

Just takes time. I don’t like using the tongs. I just freeze them a couple of times over a few days. I also use arnica if there’s and bruises and mederma to prevent scarring. Though rarely are there bruises/discoloration and scars. Just in case. Freezing the lil suckers works over time.

Alrighty_then82

I had the same thing - it’s worth it to have your dermatologist remove them - didn’t leave a mark

Ziodynes

My derm said the same thing to my skin tags, they come with age LOL. I am just accepting them 🙂

midwest_is_best

I was like so do wrinkles sis and you do help me with those 😂

araolivia

I had these for years. I always thought they were little ingrown hairs from waxing my neck. Until I got bloodwork done and I turned out to be prediabetic. A year on metformin and losing weight helped me get rid of it, it just disappeared out of nowhere.

Meringue-Fluffy

You started metformin even though you were only prediabetic? Was that doctor recommended?

NicolawsCatpernicus

Metformin is also a supportive measure to assist with fertility treatments. Normalizes blood sugar for PCOS patients and can make menstrual cycles regular, and of course, aids in weight loss. It's not strictly for diabetes. That being said, it was miserable taking the medication because they are horsepills and then you get the Metformin Poops. :/

araolivia

I never really had any of those dreaded side effects, except I was always sleepy for the first few weeks until I added B12 to my daily supplement intake.

Meringue-Fluffy

Aah had no idea! Where I’m from, we only commonly see diabetics take it. That was the reason for my question. Thanks for sharing that info.

araolivia

Yes. The only reason I found out I was prediabetic was when I went to the doctor, then she prescribed it after my bloodwork came out pretty high

Meringue-Fluffy

Good to know! Thanks for sharing!

eratoast

They can definitely form from friction, but I developed them during pregnancy (I did not have GD as someone else mentions). Hormonal imbalances can be a cause outside of pregnancy.

daaamber

Skin tags are also a sign of insulin resistance. I got a bunch of tiny ones on my neck when I had gestational diabetes. I got mine frozen off. They grow over time. They are so small they do not bother to numb them -so it didn’t feel great. But there is no marks.

windedupbobbin

> insulin resistance could you be more prone to this if you have PCOS?

HildegardofBingo

Definitely. PCOS often involves insulin resistance.

No-Pressure-5762

They can also just appear and you don’t have to be insulin resistant at all. But since everyone in this sub is mad about things that don’t fit their narrative whatever.

No-Pressure-5762

These don’t look like skin tags. They look like Dermatosis

midwest_is_best

Not according to my derm at least

No-Pressure-5762

I have the same ones. So that’s according to my derm. Just got like 28 burned off my face. Really sad people are down voting me for something that is the truth lol. This sub is toxic af so that’s the last time I comment trying to help someone. If your Derm is saying skin tags I’d get a second option.

No-Pressure-5762

It looks like this but I guess people are mad about it. But yes you can get them removed: https://www.thedermspecs.com/blog/dermatosis-papulosa-nigra/

averymint

I started noticing these and the cherry angiomas on my neck popping up when I turned 40 too. They are ugly and I want them removed too.

Vin0to

Ah same here. I got cherry angiomas around 33, I felt so old when I looked up what they were 😭

averymint

Have you had any zapped off?

Vin0to

Yes, I got the skin tags zapped.

averymint

How did you find the experience? cost? recovery? scaring? It's something that I want to do but I am too chicken. I have moles that I've wanted gone too.

Vin0to

They use a small electrocautery to zap. If your mole is large, they will give a numbing injection before cautery. It's quite painless. I can't speak to the cost. It was performed for free by a friend. My skin tags are light brown in color so the scarring was non-existent or a light brown color. The machine used is called a dessicator if you want to look up videos. Good luck!

HildegardofBingo

Like others have mentioned skin tags are commonly a sign of insulin resistance and you can have insulin resistance for years before your blood sugar starts to become elevated. I would ask your doc for a *fasting* insulin test to see if it's elevated. If it is, you can then address it through diet and rx like Metformin.

Separate-Evidence

100% agree with this comment. I had insulin resistance which needs to be diagnosed with a fasting insulin blood test. My other numbers appeared fine. This was causing my skin tags.

HildegardofBingo

It's really too bad that this isn't a routine test, since it would catch insulin resistance way before it starts showing up in fasting glucose or A1c! It would probably prevent so much metabolic syndrome and T2 diabetes!

Orchidwalker

Get your A1c checked

pleaseleevmealone

I get the same thing and I've had my A1C checked. I'm mainly commenting so I can come back and check if anyone has any advice on removal that's not at the derm. The ones on my neck are also super tiny, I don't know how I could just cut them off without cutting myself.

Witchy-toes-669

Yea, my A1c is 5.2, no issues with that at all, didn’t know there could be a connection there

minniemouse420

I got these after wearing a necklace all the time. They’re directly along where the necklace would lay.

notdesifromtx

I don’t have a recommendation on products, but I also have these. Mine are very small and I get them all over my neck and chest. I think mine are hereditary. My dermatologist cauterizes them - they do come back so I get it done every 4-5 years. I have never had problems with it leaving scars or marks. After she cauterizes them, they turn into tiny scabs and fall off within about 2 weeks. If you pick at them, it can leave a scar. I usually have it done around Thanksgiving or Christmas when I know I’ll be wearing sweaters, won’t be in the sun, and will have a few days off. This is totally out of vanity and not because I’m in pain or anything like that. It usually looks like I got stung by a bunch of ants afterwards. Highly recommend cauterization by a board certified dermatologist!

fchu1022

This is the way! I did this with my derm a month ago and holy cow my neck looks so much better. The cauterization was not expensive for my derm, I think it’s like $7-15 per tag but every derm will vary. I also use my omnilux red light therapy mask on my neck (it’s the face mask but I just put it on my neck after my face) and the combination of the two has done WONDERS!!! I have zero scars and you’d never know those tags were there.

lolliberryx

I have a few of these on my neck—I never gave them a thought until some skincare sales lady pointed them out while I was walking by her store. Guess who’s kind of insecure about them now? *sigh*

Confident-Disaster95

Having a kid, going through menopause, basically having any hormonal shift, has contributed to giving me skin tags. The larger one I do end up getting frozen. They leave a small mark but it is less irritating and annoying. I started getting little skin tags on my neck, in the creases. Using salicylic acid, like the stuff I’ve used on the KP I get on my arms, is really helpful. Any gentle exfoliant (liquid or gel, don’t scrub) will help smooth things out.

hippie_on_fire

I have a few of these too. Never realized they are related to friction. Makes sense for mine too, because they are in my armpits. The weird thing with mine is, one recently came off from my bra rubbing on it. I was kinda glad it was gone, and well it grew back in the same place ughhh I am not sure if freezing them off would cause scaring. For what it’s worth, I highly doubt anybody notices yours. They are so shallow.

midwest_is_best

Thank you! I think they annoy me more than anything bc once you have a little raised spot then everything catches on it and more form.

hippie_on_fire

Ack, that is annoying! Mine haven’t really multiplied.

coffeeloverdrinkstea

I have them on my face and neck. These are not skin tags. They are Seborrheic keratosis. They can be genetic and more common in Asian population. I frozen mine off 3 times over the years because they come back, and the procedures were sooooooo painful even with lidocaine! I’m just going to accept them now going forward. Source: I’ve seen multiple dermatologists about them (because i moved to different states).

windedupbobbin

I have these too and the post saying it may be due to friction is onto something. I did notice they're not as apparent if I properly moisturize the area, so maybe that would help you too!

Smarter-brain

I'm surprised no one has said to use tretinoin. I had some on my neck and used tret on them for a couple of months, and they mostly disappeared.

midwest_is_best

I already do, since I take my skincare down to my neck/chest area! It hasn’t helped.

30FlirtyandTrying

The skin tags did?

Smarter-brain

Yup. The small ones totally disappeared. There were one or two slightly larger ones I can still feel but can barely see anymore.

InvestigatorEntire45

I have a few in that area and got them removed at my derm office. Leaves a good mark from where it is removed. Have to use scar cream to keep it from making its own mark. I wouldn’t do it again. Too much hassle removing to just then have another visible mark you have to deal with.

Ok_Breakfast8672

I agree with this! Had some removed and the marks are larger and more noticeable from being frozen off. I would’ve kept the skin tags if I had known. Mine were a little bigger than OP’s though.

InvestigatorEntire45

Same. Mine were bigger too. Had been there for at least 20 years.

ApostrophePolice7

The clear shiny ones are sebaceous hyperplasia. I got a ton of them starting a couple years ago. Called it chicken neck until I finally went to my dermatologist and she helped correct the term. The sooner you treat them, the better off you are. They’re NOT going to go away on their own. I agree trauma or friction is likely the cause here. But I still can’t explain why my neck has so many. Anyway go to a laser cosmetic dermatologist and they can zap them with an electrocautery pen. I go every 6 months now and am so relieved there’s an actual way to get rid of them. Or else I would have hit mid life crisis way too early!

TrainerNeither4404

I just started mixing tea tree oil and jojoba oil and it has worked like a charm in minimizing these. Good luck.

1122herd

I "accidentally" got rid of mine using Retinal. A bit painful at the time , but plenty surprised.

skincaretroll

I got mine snipped off!

Witchy-toes-669

I’m in the same exact boat, following, I’m 43 and these fuckers are just appearing like a damn plague on my neck , even my husband noticed them and they aren’t big, just plentiful

midwest_is_best

I appreciate all the thoughtful comments here! Although my annual bloodwork has been fine, I will be sure to keep some of these suggestions in mind just in case.

baileycoraline

I have these too, and all my labs are normal. My derm snips them off once a year.

ApprehensiveRoad477

I had something similar going on and I started using soft services buffing bar on them. My neck is now smoooooth and beautiful

midwest_is_best

Ooh I love their hand cream, and have wanted to try the bar!

lorilee1982

I got these so bad on my neck when I was using mirena iud. I’ve had it out for a few months and they are not as pronounced but not sure if it’s related.

philophreak

I think I get mine from my seatbelt rubbing in that spot because they’re pretty much only on that side/area

philophreak

And my derm said they’re cheap to laser off!

Twiddles20

Freezing them may cause hyperpigmentation but they can easily be snipped off by your derm

Ok-Detective4150

Get checked for insulin resistance and PCOS

khedgehog

I’ve recently started getting a bunch in the same spot, I could have posted this. I’m pretty sure they’re coming from my cross body bag and the added friction. Obviously that won’t make them go away but just something to think about as a cause!

NefariousnessOk1741

I read it’s friction when you sleep. And it gets worse as one’s neck skin begins to sag. That’s true for me - never had them and now I’m 42

Terrynia

I get skin tags when i take birth control pills. Hormones encourage their growth :( I use cuticles clippers to pinch/cut them off.

Accomplished-Drop764

I use vitamin D oil for 5-7 days and they come right off. Edit: spelling

Electrical_Guess_805

Those look like flat warts.

karenjoy8

My ex had these when we were in high school. We got scissors and just cut them, they never came back. Probably a horrible and wrong way of doing it but he didn’t die or get an infection.

Asleep_Strategy_7306

A lot of comments say they got their frozen. What does that mean? What does the process look like?

SuccsInAllSituations

I freeze mine off at home with the kits made for plantar warts. I make sure to only touch the tag and not the skin around it. It falls off in 7-14 days and there’s a red mark for a little bit longer and then it’s like they were never there. I’ve frozen off like 20 of them at this point. My derm said it was totally okay to do.

meta_derm_group1

Hi there! I understand how you feel about those small skin tags. It's normal to be a bit self-conscious, even if they're not a big health concern. For existing tags, some people have good results with over-the-counter treatments, but always be careful and follow the instructions. If you're unsure, check with your dermatologist again. Remember, they're super common as we age, so try not to worry too much. Your skin is still beautiful!

PpCoCane

I’ve had a few hang tags in different areas of my body. I have been able to wrap floss around them and cut off circulation. It takes 3-4 days and they just shrivel up and die and fall off. No scars or marks after.

FlounderWorldly7701

skin classic is a device/treatment that cauterizes them. no scarring. find an aesthetician that will perform. in St. Louis, my esth does it for $50.

Key_Roll_8513

Mine have been coming off without trying and I came here to find out which one of my new skincare products is causing it so I can continue it. So it could be any of these things: I’ve been using my skincare down to my décolletage and have seen them minimizing. I use good molecules retinal, cosrx sunscreen, cerave nighttime moisturizer, cerave foaming benzoyl peroxide cleanser, innis vitamin c serum

Shunti_chaha11

I had these too and they increased after my pregnancies. I got them lasered by my dermat. The treatment basically burns each spot and it eventually falls off. I live in California and my dermat charged me $500 for face and $300 for neck. I had a lot!

midwest_is_best

That cost is not bad at all, imo. Especially if it just takes one go. How painful?

Shunti_chaha11

It’s not painless. You feel the tiny stings or burns. My dermat gives me an icepack. I ice the area for fee seconds, she goes in and does about 10, then I ice again… Ice pack helps but you will twitch with every burn. But the results are worth it. I am Indian and I fortunately did not scar afterwards. I hear some people do. Good luck!

silvermanedwino

I’m prediabetic. Just barely. Have been for years. I get annoying skin tags.

Artemisral

I agree with the others saying Op could test her Homa, glucose and a1c.

asahidryck

You can get them for eating a lot of sugar

Witchy-toes-669

I’m screwed
