so you need a new motherboard and chuck out that usb-c cable, i'm not 100% sure it is defective but i wouldn't use it with anything i care about

danktonium

Psh. I'd cut that sucker in half before tossing it. The odds that someone tries to salvage it at a recycling center are small, but not zero.

TECKERZ101

Am I blind or does that say USD??

danktonium

It does look like that, doesn't it? This is a heavily cropped piece of an old 1080p piece I did years ago, and I was in such a rush to make the joke that I didn't think to turn down the brush size.

Ok-Branch-9943

Who records a video while connecting a device? Someone who knows what is going to happen.

vontrapp42

That's what I'm thinking. Like, this already happened and you're plugging it in again? How do you let magic smoke out twice is what I don't know.

twivel01

Other end of that cable is connected to 240V.

xChrisMas

Maybe his other devices have proper sc protection :clown:

canthinkofnamestouse

>:clown: This isn't discord

red_fluff_dragon

Honestly that takes me back to phpBB boards before I think discord.

DisappointedBird

> before I think discord. A *while* before discord.

Pigsnout84

I believe he’s saying he think of phpBB boards before he thinks of discord :clown:

QuarkVsOdo

2008 was 16 years ago.

TheGravelNome

How does a new board sound? you've released the magic blue smoke. The magic blue smoke has many wonderful properties But once you release it electronics don't work anymore.

J_spec6

Just like the wise old red headed Savage sage once said Edit: for those who don't get the [reference](https://youtu.be/IM0a4HKZ-ps?si=LF5WGzm8tv1jtcGd)

TheGravelNome

The problem is the great one said that probably five years before this kid was born.

zehamberglar

What I'm reading here is that this knowledge has been around his entire life and therefore has no excuse.

mi_throwaway3

[Savage is just versed in the old world.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_smoke)

TheGravelNome

The great one should most definitely be proud

omegaaf

Damn I'm old

EmperorLlamaLegs

Adam Savage didn't coin the term, though?

J_spec6

Never said he did. He probably first heard the term back when he worked at Industrial Light and Magic

Next-Project-1450

I like 'doing weird things by its own'. Like, it might not be bad. And how - from the OP comment - it does it each time it's plugged in.

TheGravelNome

It may seem like it's doing it on its own, But we all know it's been miswired and this is the price you pay when you make electronics angry. Always make a schematic, Take a picture, and label your wires. That way this doesn't happen to you. It's a lot of work. so is replacing the entire board.

InebriatedPhysicist

In this sub (at least in the past five to ten years), I would *not* expect that any random printer that’s posted is home-built. This is likely a commercial product that OP bought, and as such, it should not have *any* of these issues.

TheGravelNome

Unless you tinkering with somthing un related and short a wire. How many thermal issues are posted each week just from that alone? Issues happen. It's part of the lerning curve.

InebriatedPhysicist

True, but as more commercial 3D printers become available, you should keep I mind that there is a larger percentage of people who just see it as “the latest new cool thing,” and they expect it to work like a normal, commercial printer, without having to think about electronics. I know that’s not you. That not me. But it *is* a non-insignificant percentage of people these days (I think, anyway).

AmbiSpace

Breathe Deep and See God

TheGravelNome

Wrong blue smoke.

SpecialFlutters

isn't that machine blood?

science40001

I love the magic blue smoke. Smells like ozone. Delicious.

musicalfish666

used to be hooked on that.. but now everything just tastes like toast

polypeptide147

I love the magic blue smoke too, but you have to keep it inside the printer. Once you take it out, it won’t work anymore.

dontclickdontdickit

The pandora box of electronics!

nonprofitnews

They've selected a new motherboard pope

Thinkpad_Owner30

Congrats you found a short and possibly fried your mobo!

zeblods

That's not a possibility, that's a certainty.

chriszimort

How can it be a certainty if it’s not a possibility? Checkmate, atheists!

Kavanaugh82

Schrodinger's Mobo

Strange_Toes

yeah but he collapsed the waveform, because he showed us all... what a jerk. he killed the printer because of his need to observe

exo316

He killed the printer with his need to show us 😭

Strange_Toes

what if we didn't want to see?

Strange_Toes

Man now I want a fookin fruit salad

RamjetX

Flames is the confirmation of possibility... technically it moved into the next phase of existence (or lack there of) with the observation of the possibility becoming known.... Its dead Jim!

DramaticChemist

Your comment made me laugh way more than it should have. Kudos!

MrDurden32

We can't be sure of that. He should try plugging it in some more, if it catches on fire 3-4 more times then we should have a pretty good idea.

Day_Bow_Bow

30 is considered the minimum sample size for statistics. Op should test more.

Corporate-Shill406

[Relevant xkcd](https://xkcd.com/242/)

SoA1322

that's only for means without replacement. If there is replacement then any is fine. If it's probability then the sample size times probability and it's complement just has to be greater than 10

Vast_Emergency

Not just found, found and found again and again. I thought it was fairly common knowledge that sparky thing mean backy away and trip the breaker if it hadn't already. No touchy touchy.

halt-l-am-reptar

I remember my first short. I was connecting a potentiometer to an arduino. The screw holding the potentiometer was too long and touched one of the connections. The arduino popped and smelled awful. I didn’t realize what happened at first and destroyed another arduino.

Thinkpad_Owner30

My first short was liking a 9V battery second time was "accidentally" opening a live extension cord that i thought was unplugged

silent_ninja1

This looks like a Creality CR6 with the recalled 452 motherboard. Creality was swapping them to 453 boards because of this issue, and had resellers send notice to get the swapped. They had the same issue for awhile... Hopefully these boards don't become as widespread with it too.... To answer the original question of.how this can happen, most likely the USB port bridged the mainboard ground and the chassis, so a short between the heater cartridge and block then made a complete circuit. Hooked to anything more expensive than an raspberry pi, they make power isolators to help protect from this btw.

exo316

Wow. Actual advice. I didn't expect that on this subreddit.

ConfusedTapeworm

But "level your wet z offset" is FUNNY.

Strange_Toes

refer to some of my earlier comments on this sub . then of course i start getting attacked and stop helping

Free_Koala_1629

this is an ender 3 s1 pro. same thing happened to me with s1 after couple of months. what is the fix exactly?

thenoiseofthunder

This should be rated way higher, kudos for actual advice!

silent_ninja1

Didnt expect that much reaction to that post! So ill go ahead and take it a step farther. All USB isolators are not created equal. [https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/advantech-corp/BB-UH401-2KV/4171596](https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/advantech-corp/BB-UH401-2KV/4171596) for example is rated for 2kv isolation. It actually protects the ground and data lines as well and is truly isolated. [https://www.etsy.com/listing/1184029990/usb-power-isolator-for-3d-printers](https://www.etsy.com/listing/1184029990/usb-power-isolator-for-3d-printers) really does nothing but stop the printer mainboard from being powered and wont protect the host device at all... Most are likely perfectly suited with something simple like this - [https://www.adafruit.com/product/2107](https://www.adafruit.com/product/2107) or this [https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/dfrobot/FIT0860/15848081](https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/dfrobot/FIT0860/15848081) Not an industrial isolator as above that I would use on a production assembly line but actually does something meaningful instead of just looks good. like the one on etsy instead of the ones that only remove the power line that the klipper crowd loves.

Gedges

You need to level the bed

Nu55ies

Dry the filament more.

scogin

9/10 times it's wet filament every time.

Welcome440

9 out of 10 fires it was

LurkerTroll

60% of the time, it's wet filament every time

Strange_Toes

no,no,no they need to dry their bed, level their filament, and put glue stick on their bl touch, also dont forget to put LED fluid in the LED fluid tube or it wont light up as much when you ABSOLUTLY FUCKING WRECK YOUR PRINTER ON PURPOSE!!!

Dan13701

How on earth could you forget to mention they’ll need to get a few new LCD pixels?

Strange_Toes

oh man my mistake i forgot all about the pixels because i had some nice spare green, red, and blue replacement pixels come in with the last moisture pump i got for my bed drier, i have a nice filament leveling probe too but man it was pricy

GoldenLegoMan

Needs more squish

Vupant

Seems like this printer has its own drying feature.

WhoKnowsWho2

No they need to apply glue stick

Parabola_Cunt

OP used glue stick. Fire persisted. OP was stunned

Strange_Toes

reddit commenter countered with sarcasm attack! It was super effective! DR.Strangetoes whited/blacked out .......

captfitz

z-offset is too close, obviously

PeachMan-

Lol jesus christ i choked on my drink

stkyrice

What the hell do you have plugged in on the other end of that cable?

Legitimate_Dark586

High voltage powerline

Irishpersonage

240 volt, must be twice as good as 120 right?

FlowerBoyScumFuck

Nah, quality over quantity any day. Europe may have *more* volts, but in the US we have much stronger volts when compared by weight.

iammandalore

Also our volts are faster. 60Hz instead of their puny 50.

Plantherblorg

Just an outlet. NBD.

GTHell

PD charger straight into AC wallet 😂

FlukyS

USB-C has a resistor to regulate voltage input, you should unless the manufacturer is doing some dumb shit plug any power supply in.

T3cht0ny

My new mixtape 🔥🔥

Gouzi00

Definitely lightning cable

P1xelHunter78

Once the magic smoke gets out, it doesn’t work anymore. That’s the first rule of electronics

Pinesse

Op just needs a magic smoke refill.

lostaga1n

It’s stored next to the blinker fluid I’ve heard.

michalpatryk

The machine ghost has been released, please call your nearest technical support

Jostain

The machine spirit has left the printer.

SonOfJokeExplainer

I’ve seen this before. Have you calibrated your e-steps? I’m just kidding, I’ve never seen anything like this before. Chuck that controller board in the trash, it’s done.

MJM-TCW

That was the magic smoke, your breakout board is now dead. You will be needing to get a new one. How old is the printer and who made it?

Heavy-Entrance7754

Lower your z-offset

OkAbbreviations1823

I can smell this from video.

AngryAlien21

All the pixies that make it work escaped through that magic smoke you released

ReefRenders

STL??

350Z_Lover

Classic wet filament and tilted bed. Dry that shit, run a bed level, and you’ll be golden my guy.

Bakamoichigei

Dry your filament, calibrate your e-steps, level your bed, adjust your belt tension, enlist the assistance of an old priest and a young priest..... ...then toss the whole thing in the trash; it's fucked anyway.

Demolition_Mike

Thing went off with an open flame. By your own comments, multiple times... Don't know exactly *what* happened, but it's dead alright

Entrance_Slight

Sir. That's a smoke machine.

d00mduck101

It’s shorted You can tell because: A - it’s on fire B - the power had no where to go, so it kept feeding until it overloaded whatever shorted component was there New board time, and maybe an email to the manufacturer, they would definitely be interested to hear how it happened

ShadowDarm

Ah I see this happens all the time, you haven't applied the laser engraving mod to your printer properly

0VER1DE567

and it causes a short on the board?

Responsible_Trash199

Pretty sure it’s because your filament isn’t dry

Sanguium

You may have sorted the heater wires while changing the nozzle and subsequently fried your mobo

rflulling

It's dead Jim!

Moeman101

He has the new printer that automatically dries his filament by producing its own flames

pantygirl_uwu

u wouldn't be happy either when some1 tries to put things into your hole(s) when u don't consent.

samjongenelen

Is this /r/3dprintingCircleJerk?

Liquidretro

She's dead jim

Bagercho

I think you need to level your bed

Blandano

Have you tried actually talking to your printer about the dangers associated with smoking?

ShadowDarm

Have you tried to dry your filament?

ogeytheterrible

I can't think of a single reason to film this...

Klatty

He said he tried twice before with the same effect

greenmaillink

That's pretty much my thoughts exactly. If this is being filmed, is this really the first time it's happening? Or is this a "let me fry my board" situation?

coop190

I'm assuming it already did it hence why they're filming it. Boards fucked. Why not.

B1rdi

OP said they've already tried 2 different cables, same result...

Srirachachacha

Well it certainly got them more eyes on the post, and amongst all the jokes, at least one helpful answer

WickedSmitty11

Well don't do that

themayora

Calibrate E-Steps

1armfish

I didn’t know Sabre makes a 3d printer now.

Parking-Fly5611

This is one case you can be grateful that there ain't no gas in it.

darthdodd

That’s normal

the_Athereon

Bye bye mainboard. Hello DIY nightmares.

BlueBozo312

The printer is possessed. Call your local Ghostbuster to get the ghost out of it.

WarbossTodd

You let all the magic smoke out.

phalkon13

See, you let the smoke out. Without the smoke, it won't work. You're gonna have to get a new motherboard.... I would recommend possibly a different SBC cable as well.

BuddyBing

When electronics start smoking, the first thing you should do is make sure to do it again but this time on video....

R63A

If your in the cincinnati area i have a spare S1pro board you can have.

Murky_Shallot5602

Well you shorted that out. Gotta have the power off

Ackeso

This blows. You definitely need a new board here. Honestly depending on the cost might be worth getting an A1 on sale instead. A lot less smoke tends to come out of those.

maniac_me

Its not food safe!

arrotsel

That's a data input but you are adding power to your cable!

Psychological_Job737

That sd card port with sticker looks like an angry robot yelling. Smoke just added some effects to it. Sorry bro for your loss, I have seen this smoke more times than I would like to.

eatmoremeat101

Magic smoke mod

SiirMissalot

Recalibrate your e-steps

Calicoleopard99

*motherboard has left the chat*

Zeemex

Try drying your usb

TalElnar

Yeah... Maybe don't do that agian

HiImDan

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lp0_on_fire

allmyfrndsrheathens

Did you plug in the cable knowing it would do that???? In that case, you’re super fucked. With a cactus.

Mystogan_316

Mine did the same thing. Took out my pc motherboard and processor. Oddly enough the printer still works. Finishing a nine day print as we speak and this was almost a year and a half ago. Not sure if cord or what but I’ll never plug it into anything again

m0rph3u5-75

No He does not! I just saw you insert an USB cable in its slot. Without consent

Vinnie1169

Oh well, Bambu Lab is having a sale going on right now as of this post. 🤣

Ok_Ambition9134

The smoke is supposed to stay INSIDE the machine. Once you let the smoke out it will never work right again. It NEEDS the smoke.

WeaselBeagle

Your bed might not be clean. Wipe it down with alcohol and try again

Welcome440

Test quickly, make sure the alcohol was just applied.

Mr-RS182

Z axis needs recalibrating

SadTurtleSoup

Did you try leveling your bed?

Ambitious-Charge-432

either one of two things: 1. your printer is not dry enough 2. you need to upgrade your killper

NoHayNoticias

I have never seen anyone being so incompetent to plug a USB-C cable. The cable goes straight in, in a single push, all the way. You move it side to side like you are trying to see if you can short the pins by inserting it at an angle.

wha-haa

Sorry but the smoke won’t go back in.

KyleNarayan

I'm not an expert in any way but that doesn't seem to be good.

neurodivergentowl

Looks like it blew a capacitor. Glad it didn’t cause a fire or damage any other devices. Replace the board or it may be more economical to replace the whole printer given how quickly this tech evolves.

Fun-Worry-6378

wowzers! thats a new one!

ExperienceUnlucky410

Steam fired heated bed?

trollsmurf

If the USB cable is not connected to anything there's a short in it or possibly the connector. Did you do more than switch nozzle?

txanpi

thats the typical RAM problem, you need more RAM

SlightlyMadGuy

Do not the printer

[deleted]

LuckyEmoKid

Hmm, that's peculiar.

SmegmaSandwich69420

That... doesn't quite seem right.

RandomWalk6174

after you printed a pikachu, your printer learned Thunderbolt

tempest-reach

the genie will grant you 3 wishes, now.

longtimegoneMTGO

Did you have the power on while you changed the nozzle? You aren't supposed to do that for a very good reason. There are often exposed bits of wire on the heater element and on the heat sensor. If you accidently touch those wires with a metal tool you send 24 volts into a chip that can only handle 5 and that's it for your board, and it's not hard to do what while you are changing a nozzle. The correct procedure is to heat the nozzle, shut off the power, then quickly change the nozzle.

whty

Why you let the smoke escape

Taurion_Bruni

Did you dry the filament (or printer from the looks of it)

LaGrrrande

Every machine is a smoke machine if you operate it wrong enough.

emveor

you just just need to level your bed

bradforrester

I don’t know what was wrong with it before this happened, but I know what’s wrong with it now.

Hairy-Extent7302

Had the same issue that flat cable probably have short. I swear who decided to use that flat cable on that extruder is totattly an idiot.

chemprofdave

You need to dry your filament.

irving47

I'm reminded of an old joke about, "Then don't move your arm like that." Don't plug it in like that.

DarthKavu

Use a glue stick on your plate. Should fix it right up.

SpaceCadetMoonMan

Good reminder to keep an electronics rated fire extinguisher 🧯 next to your work bench :)

JackCooper_7274

This is what happens when you don't dry your filament

Mendican

50/50 your usb is plugged into a charger.

RubenRCF

Looking into 3D printing. Anyone here that could give me some advice, tips, etc… that’d be great!

FriendlyToad88

You need to lower your z offset :P

canthinkofnamestouse

You shorted the thermistor wires to ground

alexcreeper3129

how about just get a new 3D printer...

Mechanicalmind

Your printer WAS doing weird things by its own.

Dragonsoul19990

"Every machine is a smoke machine if you operate it badly enough" 😂

WorldWarPee

When you use the fire filament

UnwaveringLlama

Sabre printer?

ApolloWasMurdered

It looks like the two power sources have different earth potentials. You might need to check your house wiring - this can occur if active and neutral are swapped. Or try *very carefully* putting a multimeter on voltage mode between the case of your PC and the case of your printer - if there is more than 1V, you have an earth issue. And whatever you do, don’t touch with your skin them at the same time. I’m guessing you don’t have RCDs/EFLIs in your switchboard?

_Intel_Geek_

r/electroBOOM

Buff55

Sorry to say this but that board is crispy. No way to fix that. Need a new board because that's a fire hazard now.

Itz_Evolv

Smoking is bad for him, you should tell him that

spinozasrobot

Have you tried lowering the bed temp?

zck-watson

Maybe don't do that

Wonderful-Club6307

GG's mate

TechnicalWhore

Either you have a bad USB cable or you have an outlets that are not wired correctly. That looks like a possible ground loop.
