One year for Christmas I asked for a Rammstein tshirt.
My 40+ year old aunt ventured into a hot topic to buy it for me when it was still old hot topic not now when it’s basically weebs r us.
One of my favorite memories.
Both were banned as a kid & frowned upon as a teen. But then they started selling Disney stuff & I’d randomly be given a gift card to hot topic or something & it threw me off so much.
Hot topic also started selling some “normal” tops that were just unusual colors. I got a purple checked top there that I still get compliments on at work all these years later! But it was mostly when Hot Topic started selling pop culture cartoon & sci-fi stuff that I was finally allowed in order to encouraged to go.
Hahah yuuup, parents divorced at young age
Dad's
Spencer's - no go
Hot Topic - negative that's where all the people that cry after sex shop.
MTV - shutoff because Dennis Rodman showed his pubes
Mom's did not care but didn't really have tv, outdoors and dirt bikes was life
My neighbor had a nice Honda 250 and an old Suzuki 3-wheeler (dangerous af) so while I never had my own, I did get a taste of the MX life.
I used to pick up motocross magazines and think, “well, I could afford that muffler…”
I went to church every Sunday and went to Catholic school, but my parents would take us to browse Spencer a lot of the time we went to the mall. I guess they knew wouldn't understand or care about a lot of what the store was selling. Even got a classmate a gift from there for the Secret Santa thing when I was in grade school. I'm sure our priest would have a cow, man. Like, every time we had Mass at school, he'd rail against Melrose Place during his sermon, for some reason. As if 10-year-olds would be interested in watching that show, lol
Me too I always went into Spencer’s to check out the posters… and the lightning globes… and the things with the pins that you put your hand on to pick the pins to look like your hand.
further context: it’s located in an abandoned mall on the east coast. some friends & i used to explore it after it closed in the late-90s. all the stuff is still left behind. including the portal in the back of the Spencer gifts store. the one that brings you back to before the mall closed. i haven’t been in years. i’m thinking of going back in.
My folks totally let us go into Spencer’s! All of my buddies wanted to stay the night at MY place mainly cause we got to go to the mall and wreck some Spencer’s and Aladdin’s Castle, when their own parents would never let them sniff those spots. Good times.
Clearly this post is wrong.
The portal doesn’t send you back in time.
It sends you forward and wipes your memory. And all of us obviously went through it.
You can determine the strictness of a person's religious upbringing by whether they were ever allowed to set foot inside a Spencer's (I wasn't)
Spencer's AND Hot Topic were off limits for me due to rudeness and satanism respectively.

Sounds like a decent outcome, honestly. Dirt bikes were the dream back in the 90s.
Loved every minute of it
Brother, I recently fulfilled that dream and bought a totally sick sport quad. It’s every bit as cool as I thought it would be.

I wasn't allowed to watch the Simpsons and someone gave me a bart and Lisa doll and my they got put in the burn can
Friend, this is hilariously accurate I also was not allowed into the store

I never realized it doesn’t have and ‘s. It’s just Spencer.
Holy shit! This is the first time I realized this—childhood mind blown!
They’ve gone back and forth, I’ve definitely seen it with an ‘s before when they had the spray paint logo
Oh no. Is this like the fruit of the loom cornucopia?
Spencer *gifts* is the technical name I guess. But I’ve always called it Spencer’s too.
The smell of the incense…
"Incense"
Incest
Daddy
I was always a fan of the poster section
Me too I always went into Spencer’s to check out the posters… and the lightning globes… and the things with the pins that you put your hand on to pick the pins to look like your hand.
Front; "Aww cute, fluffy hats, lava lamps, mugs and wigs" Back; "And that's a really big penis"
That’s a weird looking lava lam…. Ohhhhhh.
A secret portal to what?
Narnia
Kinky narnia
ended up in some weird tunnels behind the mall, took me to the same mall but in what looked like a different time
Nuts to the downvotes; this take is hilarious!

They used to have a head shop in the back. Don't ask me why I know this.
The one in Delaware had a portal as well. My mom busted me getting swept into it once.
Gotta be careful with them. All that electricity & energy in one spot? Was always bound to create an anomaly
Remember when it was called DAPY
I was in a Spencer's 3 hours ago.
I worked at Lamonts department store in the children's department lol
So that’s what happened to the last 20 years of my life. Dammit!
Damn I miss the old days.

But it also can take you back. But you need something in order to get in.
