I saw them live once...they were awful. Had to stop 3 times in the middle of a song because they fucked it up.
With that said, i love their records, but the live show was really disappointing considering these were professional musicians.
That's too bad. When I saw them they were amazing. Their stage was a spinning record and Tribe Called Quest opened for them. Top 3 shows I've ever seen, and I've been to a lot of concerts.
They were on Def Jam records and on the Raising Hell tour with Run-DMC, Whodini, LL Cool J. Hosted and guested Yo MTV raps a number of times.
People forget how important it was for $uburban America to embrace hip hop. Beastie Boys helped bridge this connection.
Can't tell if you're a fan or not, but, I recommend to you and everyone one to check out the Beastie Boys Story on Apple TV.
Here's a dope video from their later years, without any comic antics, showing skills, [Three MCs and one DJ](https://youtu.be/XflfiylNNXY?si=gzRkcyLIFmofWgCS)
Not having these guys in your top list is fine. Denying their contribution to the culture is wrong and using their color as your basis is fucking ignorant.
One
I rank them so high they're not even 90's. They started in the 80's with the OGs so they have extra boost. Check Your Head and I'll Communication are all timers for me though.
One of my favorite bands ever. Paul's Boutique is one of the best albums ever.
When Paul’s came out, I was so excited. Got a bunch of D Batteries with my paper route money and strapped my boombox to my bmx handle bars with some bungee cords and bumped Licensed for two and a half miles to the record shop. Bought the tape and popped it in deck 2. I had heard Hey Ladies since MTV had played the video prior to the album release.
Anyways, I start pedaling home and I didn’t make it more than 10 minutes and several fast forwards before I turned it off. Got home, tried listening a few more times and I just didn’t get it. I was 14.
About 4 years later, I check it out again and it’s all of a sudden the best album I ever heard. My discovery of trees may have assisted in that. But yeah, Paul’s took some time for me to understand and appreciate.
Same! was 13 when I first heard it and was like huh? This isn’t Licensed to Ill! A couple years later we popped it back in and it was like discovering a whole world of psychedelic Funked out hip-hop. Legendary Album. Still Fux 💯
Paul’s Boutique was massively influential even though it was a dud on the charts initially. That album along with De La’s debut (shout out to Prince Paul and The Dust Brothers) upped the sampling game by like 5000%. Beasties were funky as hell. First four albums are classics in my book
Their first Album in 1986, was the first HipHop Album to reach #1!
Their second Album, Paul’s boutique is possibly the most influential hiphop album ever released.
They released albums and remained relevant over the course of 4 decades.
Eminem, arguably the most influential and talented solo rap artist, cites the Beastie Boys as one of his top influences.
LL Cool J will also tell you Jack Harlow is a decent artist if TMZ catches him outside. They were label mates why would he say anything bad about them.
The. Beasties refused to record anymore songs until Rick Ruben listened to LL’s demo. They were major influencers to bringing hip hop world wide. Opening for Run DMC to pack more people in the building, promoting with Russel Simmons, combing rap lyrics over rock guitar solos and hardcore beats. You clearly have no idea who they were and you’re just saying stuff. Read a book…. Hopefully one on the Beastie Bots
WTF are you talking about? The Beastie Boys helped create Hip Hop Culture as it is known today… again this didn’t borrow it, they didn’t steal it, they aren’t culture vultures. They are the culture, just as much as Run DMC, NWA, Tupac, Outcast, Jay Z, Lil Wyane, Em, Kendrick et al.
Your assertion that because I am white I am a guest in the Culture is just ridiculous… I bought my first rap album, Run DMCs debut on vinyl (yes im that old) in 1985. My first tape cassette, was NWA, the last CD I bought before converting to streaming was Tha Carter III. I’ve been bumping Lupe’s new single all week. Hip hop is part of my life story… get over yourself buddy.
Well, they released a hardcore EP called [Aglio e Olio](https://youtu.be/vtmA0ebaemw?si=jLjxaWLRX2kiu_j3) in 1995, after Ill Communication and before Hello Nasty. They went on tour to support that release but under a different name and with Awol Smith from Suicidal Tendencies. There was also a VHS release of a show from Tokyo that was pretty hard to get your hands on.
The band name they used was [Quasar](https://youtu.be/bL5Sk43Yuqw?si=vtxx3oRzfJqHlPpH). That’s part of the Tokyo video.
In the US, Quasar did [small shows like this](https://youtu.be/EKfzXz13Ipc?si=C075LGkq35KNKQnz) and [house parties](https://youtu.be/T7r_O4AJD0g?si=cvtCoz2GyBKjieor) and stuff.
The Beastie Boys also would sometimes open for themselves as a punk/hard rock band called [Triphammer](https://youtu.be/GuEkTJjm3AU?si=DYWW9DRAXEwaR8W4). They would dress in wigs and it was a fun parody I suppose. This was in 1987 but I think they did this a few times in the 90s too.
So now you know.
Really I always thought the Aglio Olio came out before they were the Beasties. Back in the Lime wire day. After searching for Beastie Boys songs. Some of them came up. I've always listened to punk too. So I was blown away that they had made that kind of music. They kinda sounded like the Germs to me
They were The Young Aborigines but I don’t think they formally released any material under that name. They then became the Beastie Boys and released Polly Wog Stew in 1982.
Unsure if any songs on Polly Wog Stew were Young Aborigines songs.
The song I'm thinking about they shout B E A S T I E, in a state of emergency!! Does that sound familiar?
I liked it right off. The vocals reminded me Darby Crash from the Germs. I have it somewhere in some old music folders
That's it. I know its not masterful rock and roll. I've just always loved punk music. So when I heard that after knowing all their hip hop records. I was blown away.
Thanks for that. I haven't heard that in probably 10 years
I think you're on to something. I used to hear about hip-hop artists being musicians. Rakim played the sax. Too short played drums. Pimp C played trumpet and was raised by a choir director. Tupac was a theater student.
Wow that's crazy. I've heard of all those except Rakim and the sax. I was young when he was coming out and he always just seemed like hard dude. It's hard to picture him playing the sax but its dope
U can call them novice level players all u want. I do know they play the instruments on Sabotage and that jams like a motherfucker. So to each his own I guess
Lol it's not a dig bro, ease up. They use their instruments creatively where they just master a lick or two for a song. But they're not technical players and they'd be the first to tell you.
MCA is a decent bass player and Mike might be okay on drums. But adrock can't play guitar lol. He gets by but it's just wawa tricks and rudimentary chord strumming. Watch any live performance of Live at PJs - one of my all time fav songs. They basically use instruments for sound effects.
I respect everyone's opinions. I'm not that guy that gets all mad on Reddit. I'm just saying they come from a punk background. The whole point of punk was the deconstruction of the technical players. You didnt have to be Hendrix or Page. Just play. That's all I'm trying to convey. I dont think they ever had any intentions or aspirations of being super technical.
To me that still separates them from alot of other rappers. Who wouldn't even know how to hold an instrument
I remember this very vividly.
NATO bombing my city, me living in the cellar of our building with all the tenets.
A friend passes me Hello Nasty CD and a disc man and I swear, nothing was the same ever since.
I also watched them live in 2009. Best concert of all time.
I was so little in the 80's but I remember they stood out because they were white dudes. Nobody was doing what they were doing. You can argue their breakthrough kinda makes them the Eminem of the 80's in terms of breaking out with something that hadn't been done before. They were no scrubs either. These white cats had bars
They are top tier. Paul revere is the first example of reversing the beat I can think of in hip hop. Rick Rubin produced license to ill. Tbh it is sick for an 80’s album.
I love them , it’s hard to rank them . They are rap but they can be mixed n with alternative. They play their own instruments which is great but hard to rank them in a category.
So legendary that no one ever mentions that they are white.
People talk about Eminem being white all the time. They talked about Vanilla Ice being white. They talked about Search being white.
You never hear it mentioned about the Beastie Boys. They are just the Beasties.
They are a major part of Hip Hop culture.
No they are not. People want to make beastie boys seem more important than they actually are to feel connected to hip hop, but hip hop doesn't acknowledge the beastie boys.
Top 3 personally. I've been listening to the B-Boys since I was in 5th grade. I got to see them on Oahu
One of the best live shows seen. 3 openers. Then they played for like 3 hours. It was fenced off so you could go swim in the ocean if wanted. Dope as fuck.
I know it's sacrilege, but I've never 'gotten' the BB. I don't actively dislike them, I just don't ever listen to anything by them. Maybe it's just not my thing?
Nothing wrong with that. I grew up on them so I like it. But I can honestly say I haven't had them in my playlist in 20 years. Definitely not even in my top ten of music. And I do rap, punk, classic rock daily. 38 so I've been around a minute. Respect and love what they did just not a daily driver.
they pretty much dominated early 90s suburbia when 'check you head' came out, especially with the band plus electronic production. Not sure if they ever got over in urban inner city black communities .
ill communication solidified that run and they were pretty huge with suburb teens and college kids. WHite big cities like austin and denver, they were massive and arguably the biggest group among that demo.
the last time i saw them they were in the round live ie the stage spins and it went from hip hop to having a live show with a band. talib kweli was the opener. They were good.
honestly i dont think they translate with people under 40, something about the style and sound.
In terms of hip hop i always thought they did a great job keeping true to the game without being corny, they were style leaders(had a brand called x-large that was part of the OG streetwear movement that crossed over with skate culture), and had new innovative sounds.
Pauls boutique is probably their best album released in 89, but it wasnt very well recieved until after its release with the exception of a few heads.
Nowhere near the top. They sound annoying as fuck, I don’t care how influential they are. I know I’m supposed to like them because I’m white and they used to be punk but nah
They were the bridge between Punk Rock and Hip Hip. The Anti-Disco genres. Possibly the 1st(after Blondie and before Aerosmith) to crossover genres and be successful. Def OGs of the game.
1st album - straight hip hop.
the rest of the albums - mash ups of different styles. I think they lost a lot of black fans after the first album, because we didn't understand the new sounds they were going for. technically they were sampling just like many other artists of the time, but it wasn't the same vibe as ATCQ or de la soul doing it.
They’re important cause of the genre mix, they were different, experimental and passionate of their vision, I’m not even old and I recognize these guys as one of the many pioneers of hip hop.
I recognize the significance and listened when they were first coming up, but they were more of a punk vibe. Although no doubt they were hip hop. Paul Revere is straight bars and punchlines. Legends
They were so great at weaving different genres together- not only thru sampling but they became great musicians. Their first 3 albums are uniquely brilliant and sound different from the next. Do they ever come up on my top 10 favorite rappers list? No. But their production transcended hip-hip, punk, stoner grooves… they were a force of creativity. All time favorite BAND for sure.
They're iconic and the first CD I ever bought was Hello Nasty when it dropped; back then, rap albums never had lyrics inside the liner notes, but this was a 20something-track record and the lyrics were crammed in in their entirety, amazed me in a time before Genius
They were mediocre then and still are. Russel and Rick did what all executives did before them… oh we got successful black acts? Great great……But what if we could take what Run DMC are doing but with ……White Guys!!?? It’d be like we’re printing money!
Exactly lol. Back then nobody who was a part of hip hop acknowledged the beastie boys, but it's funny watching these people hype up the beastie boys. Thank God for social media because if these people had their way eminem would have invented rap and created the fast flow.
Regardless if that was the initial plan, that plan put so much into motion. $uburban youth buying hip hop records made the business sustainable. Fact.
You can knock License to Ill (86') all you want, (they're embarrassed of some of that shit) but you can't deny Paul's Boutique (89'). When they crawled back with Check your Head (92') and then Ill Communication (94') they brought hip hop to alternative/mainstream radio and festivals like no other. Fact.
I deny all that shit! 😂😆💯 We would have gotten there with or without them, just would have taken longer. I appreciate all artists contribution to hip hop. That shit ain’t easy. But with that said, they were mediocre at best, an that’s being nice. 🤷🏾♂️
Oh, like Eminem, Drake, Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Travis Scott and all those other lames you like actually do?
Beastie Boys had talent. Your generation of rappers would've been working at McDonald's if they were around during the Beastie Boys, Beat Nuts and Run DMC era.
Did you stop checking on them after the first album? They were one of what? -3 acts in the 90s Hip-Hop universe that were playing instruments. The 3rd and 4th album is them playing. Guitar, bass, drums and SP1200… and they were accompanied by the great Eric Bobo on percussion and Mark Nishita on organ. Check. Your. Head.
Ha, that was your takeaway from the Beastie Boys Story on Apple TV.
You're right about the right place at the right time, but that's usually true for any artist. These guys being on Def Jam brought hip hop from the street to the $uburbs witch helped pave the way for so many
You clearly don't know anything about Hip Hop or Rap if you think the Beastie Boys were a "rap parody band".
Besides, they're better than most mainstream rappers past 2007.
it's ok to be a beastie boy fan boy but do the knowledge son, Google a little bit. it's hard to get ppl frm other generations to know how hipnhop was like in the 70's and 80's if you weren't there.
Not a fanboy. I just respect the OGs from the 80s like them, Boogie Down Productions, Run DMC, Afrikkka Bambataa etc who paved the way for the rappers and producers the younger generation looks up to.
Also I'm originally from NY so I'll give BB their proper dues.
You West Coast dudes can stick with Dr. Dre and the G Funk stuff. I prefer that 80s East Coast 808, 90s and early 2000s East Coast Hardcore, the Down South Alternative Rap and the Down South and Midwest Horrocore sounds.
Beastie Boys fall into the first category and came out during the Golden Age, so I recognize their influence and lean more towards them, even if I personally think Afrikkka Bambataa and Grandmaster Flash were better.
High on the list; influential, creative... tbh I don't consider them straight hip hop. I believe they combined genres
Combined in the best way. Saw them in concert, one side mosh pit, one side break dance circle. They are pioneers.
That's freaking awesome!!! I agree they were most definitely groundbreaking artists
What year?
I hear more Beastie Boys on Alternative stations than I do on Hip-Hop stations. And 99% of time it's the song Intergalactic.

The Beastie Boys were originally in a hardcore punk band together, so your opinion aligns with facts.
I bet they played ska too … just a hunch
The fuck is that supposed to mean
I think something to do with reggae influence in punk rock, as well as an influence on hip hip, but idk. I don't recall any ska sounding BB songs.
I rank them so high they're not even 90's. They started in the 80's with the OGs so they have extra boost. Check Your Head and I'll Communication are all timers for me though.
PAUL’S BOUTIQUE?
1989
^This guy Beasties
Red tape cassette guy.
It took the rest of the world a long time too… I remember after it came out it was quickly banished to discount bins.
Same man, same… that album was so ahead of its time
Same! was 13 when I first heard it and was like huh? This isn’t Licensed to Ill! A couple years later we popped it back in and it was like discovering a whole world of psychedelic Funked out hip-hop. Legendary Album. Still Fux 💯

What? 😂 Foh.
No they are not lol. Nobody in hip hop looks at the beastie boys as influential.
Their first Album in 1986, was the first HipHop Album to reach #1! Their second Album, Paul’s boutique is possibly the most influential hiphop album ever released. I think LL Cool J may have a very different view than you have.
If it’s going to be that type of party I’m gonna stick my dick in the mash potatoes! Obviously all time greats lol
To me the fact that they could really play instruments too sets them apart. They actually dropped a Hardcore punk EP also before becoming famous.
Well, they released a hardcore EP called [Aglio e Olio](https://youtu.be/vtmA0ebaemw?si=jLjxaWLRX2kiu_j3) in 1995, after Ill Communication and before Hello Nasty. Rakim played the drum track on Know the Ledge - it’s looped up but it’s him playing.
I love the beasties but I mean, they played at *very* novice levels.
No way, they had style flavor flow interesting voices catchy funny rhymes and always sick beats
They made music with instruments, which is a lot more than most musical act’s can say these days.
U can call them novice level players all u want. I do know they play the instruments on Sabotage and that jams like a motherfucker. So to each his own I guess

A number 1. They’re my favorite band of all time.
Same here, no one else is close
They are top tier. Paul revere is the first example of reversing the beat I can think of in hip hop. Rick Rubin produced license to ill. Tbh it is sick for an 80’s album.
The Beasties are top tier, kind of off the charts tbh
Paul’s Boutique, Check Your Head and I’ll Communication are regulars in my rotation
They transcend hip hop and are in the greatest bands of any genre. Unrankable due to god-like status
Wrong
Care to expand on that?
They didn't transcend hip hop. They were a gimmick in hip hop.
Gimmick? Yo you're going to need to break that down even more haha. They were more hiphop than 99% of rappers back in the day
Dude's a bigot, he doesn't have any real reason, and doesn't feel he needs it. I wouldn't waste your time
I love them , it’s hard to rank them . They are rap but they can be mixed n with alternative. They play their own instruments which is great but hard to rank them in a category.
ILL COMMUNICATION 🏆
Yes sirrrr 💯
very ahead of their time while nothing Iike em...funky white boyz
So legendary that no one ever mentions that they are white. People talk about Eminem being white all the time. They talked about Vanilla Ice being white. They talked about Search being white. You never hear it mentioned about the Beastie Boys. They are just the Beasties. They are a major part of Hip Hop culture.
Well said. They are funky aliens indeed. Blazed their own sonic pathway.

Heh. Right.
Damn you said something then.
Pioneers Of Influential, Innovative, Creativity The Whole Nine The Beastie Boys Are The True Legends Of Hip Hop.
No they are not. People want to make beastie boys seem more important than they actually are to feel connected to hip hop, but hip hop doesn't acknowledge the beastie boys.
Bruh you've made this exact comment a few times now - we get it you don't like the beastie boys.
Underrepresented in people's top acts of the 90s, don't get the flowers they deserve. Top 10 from the 90s for me for sure
That's because they're an 80s Rap group.... go on any best 80s Rap group list and they'll be there
Didn't even think about that lol, I love their 90s stuff so much
True, but they were in their peak in the 80s.
I love Check Your Head and Ill Communication.
Was never a huge fan, but I respect what they've accomplished. And Paul's Boutique is pretty much a master's class in chopping samples.
Top 5 in the 80s alone
There Legends up there with all the greats.
Right up there with the best of the best.
Top 3 personally. I've been listening to the B-Boys since I was in 5th grade. I got to see them on Oahu One of the best live shows seen. 3 openers. Then they played for like 3 hours. It was fenced off so you could go swim in the ocean if wanted. Dope as fuck.
Omg. Now that im a grown man they look like lil punk ass kids
Low, but I like different rap. UGK is my top for 90s
Country rap tunes for the win. Naamtalmbout!
I know it's sacrilege, but I've never 'gotten' the BB. I don't actively dislike them, I just don't ever listen to anything by them. Maybe it's just not my thing?

Legends.Paul's Boutique is a hell of a drug. Samples on their peak and unpayable under today's law.
Top 10
Very high. Talented musicians, mixed a few genres and are still relevant
GOATs
There was a point in the 90’s that the Beastie Boys were the driving force behind an entire non-lame pop culture. They transcend rankings.
Iconic
Unmatched to this day. Got to see them at Bonnaroo 2009.
Cookie Puss !!
OG
Fucking love them, one of my favourites in any genre

my favorite band since i was a kid
Great group
beyond great. absolute gods
I DON'T
Nowhere near the top. They sound annoying as fuck, I don’t care how influential they are. I know I’m supposed to like them because I’m white and they used to be punk but nah
Y
Number one for me! Up there with RUN DMC
OG’s💯
They were the bridge between Punk Rock and Hip Hip. The Anti-Disco genres. Possibly the 1st(after Blondie and before Aerosmith) to crossover genres and be successful. Def OGs of the game.
High ranking. Influential. Ground breaking. Creative. Genre bending.
Legends
They are truly a staple of Hip Hop. They always respected the culture and I respect them for that.
I put them in a category of their own. Legends, and game changers, but it’s tough to rank them. Unrankable bc they are what they are
Yes
.
I don't.
Hybrid legends. Got to see them also do a half full band set. Awesome.
This greatest hits album was fire
Top 10 as a hip hop group. Top 5 as being influential, musical and ground breaking. Top 3 in the white rappers category.
No.
They're iconic and the first CD I ever bought was Hello Nasty when it dropped; back then, rap albums never had lyrics inside the liner notes, but this was a 20something-track record and the lyrics were crammed in in their entirety, amazed me in a time before Genius
way ahead of their time
They were touring on Hello Nasty...so probably 1999
Everyone talks about how influential they were but to what extent do you enjoy their music?
i dont
They were mediocre then and still are. Russel and Rick did what all executives did before them… oh we got successful black acts? Great great……But what if we could take what Run DMC are doing but with ……White Guys!!?? It’d be like we’re printing money!
Exactly lol. Back then nobody who was a part of hip hop acknowledged the beastie boys, but it's funny watching these people hype up the beastie boys. Thank God for social media because if these people had their way eminem would have invented rap and created the fast flow.
Facts! 💯💯💯
Influential and their beats still hold up today 💯. But why is this in a 90s Rap Sub? This should be in the 80s Rap Sub.
Intergalactic 🤖
No.1 on the "Rappers who sound like they're being castrated while screaming over some of the sickest beats in history list"
😂😂😂
"No rating! Zero! I don’t fuck with duke(s) at all. At all"

Using other people's beats is kinda the signature of hip hop no? One of my favorites is andre nickatina over an ice cream truck.

These guys being on Def Jam brought hip hop from the street to the $uburbs witch helped pave the way for so many
A punk band with hip hop elements.
These guys were amazing...in the studio. They couldn't play live tho
Novelty act
They're boring to me tbh.
Tbh zero 🍩😂
Last
In the 50s
They were big, they were important, they don't feature at all on my personal rankings.
My exact thoughts

u just like wyt rappers smh
Eminem and Macklemore both suck
idk why ppl think this group is something other than what they said they were, a rap parody band
Top 50
Love them- countless classics but I hate this album cover. I wasn't there, I shouldn't judge but fuck.
80s Rap my guy.....
Never heard of check your head and ill communication?
Trash.
And still better than 95% of mainstream rappers past 2007.
