Throw_Away_Students

I love how calmly it walks up to beat his ass

dingusfett

Probably thinking to itself "lol this idiot isn't even trying to run away, this is too easy"

soothepaste

Then just walks away "time to go fuck something else up".

Dansk72

"I wonder if we can pet him?" - Famous last words.

FrankDiditdidit22

He was wagging his tail, clearly he's friendly

Dansk72

If that's true for dogs, it must be true for warthogs!

babyjo1982

Probably mine

Throw_Away_Students

Same. I want to pet every animal I see 😭

Lizardman922

I believe his last words were 'Help me! Help!'

Dansk72

Yeah, but those aren't *famous*!

Bicolore

It’s not thinking anything. Warthogs are idiots. They get eaten all the time in the wild because they’ll be running away from a lion or something and then they’ll just forget why they’re running and stop. Not sure what this guy was upto though as I’ve been touching distance to these things loads of times and they just do their own thing.

laughingashley

Uhhhhh, pigs are one of the more intelligent creatures in the animal kingdom. They stop running because they can't sweat, so they'll literally overheat and die if they run for too long. They can only do their best, they're not idiots. They didn't "forget," they simply cannot go on.

Bicolore

Pumba literally means stupid in Swahili. I’ve seen them stop, look around and then be like “oh yeah, lion”. It’s a bit odd to suggest that animals of the same family are equally intelligent.

jackinsomniac

I mean just look at dogs. Just going from breed to breed, some are crazy intelligent, and some are derpy as fuck.

ArmpitPutty

Yes, but in this case warthogs are the smarter breed. Domestication for the purpose of consumption doesn't generally translate well to intelligence.

SeismicToss12

Yep. There’s a difference. Just look at us and the apes and then the monkeys.

namelessforgotten666

Or hell, the difference between two people.

SeismicToss12

Substantially. Relative to about the top 10% of doctors and professors, the average western adult is dense enough to be considered mentally handicapped. Even among the able-minded of our kind, there are gulfs between different groups.

ArmpitPutty

Here are four different sources including a book written by a ten-year [chairman and director](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hans_Fr%C3%A4drich) of the Berlin Zoo whose PhD dissertation was entitled "Zur Biologie und Ethologie des Warzenschweines unter Berücksichtigung des Verhaltens anderen Suiden (On the biology and ethology of the warthog taking into account the behaviour of other suids)" in which he notes their intelligence (along with their vigilance, which you also called into question) on page 133. [Their intelligence, shyness and vigilance combined with an acute sense of smell and hearing make them more difficult to study in the wild than other ungulates.](https://scholar.googleusercontent.com/scholar?q=cache:GZOBVrBzzsUJ:scholar.google.com) [“At three weeks old, the two piglets are very spry, running around under Mom’s feet and playing with one another... These guys are some of the most intelligent animals I have ever worked with.” Considered remarkably smart and adaptable, warthogs are able to evaluate a threat and adapt accordingly.](https://www.memphiszoo.org/zoo-news/posts/two-warthogs-born-at-memphis-zoo) ["We're thrilled to have this new litter to add to our warthog family," Scott Carter, chief life sciences officer for the Detroit Zoological Society, said in a statement. "Like all pigs, warthogs are smart and precocious and a lot of fun to watch running and rooting around in their habitat."](https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/speaking-of-science/wp/2015/05/27/these-warthog-piglets-at-the-detroit-zoo-are-named-for-game-of-thrones-characters/?fbclid=IwAR02uQq6LWLn31cFaEY3VyB3Ik1Lg9vqEsA4gfDkRZ4Z4Ojj7hDDaCr98Ts) [Brains before beauty: Warthogs may not be the most beautiful or graceful creatures in the Animal Kingdom. But they are remarkable for their strength, intelligence, and flexibility!](https://animals.sandiegozoo.org/animals/warthog) And here's an Evolutionary Biology study which compared the brain size of domesticated versus wild pigs. [The loss of brain mass in domestic ungulates is related to selection for reduced reaction to external stimuli. In our samples both wild boars and FLPs have significantly larger brain per unit mass than domestic pigs.](https://www.researchgate.net/publication/258422422_A_Dysfunctional_Sense_of_Smell_The_Irreversibility_of_Olfactory_Evolution_in_Free-Living_Pig)

HungryLikeDickWolf

Why does Reddit love uovoting total bullshit so much? Pigs are super fucking smart.

HalensVan

Social media is mostly morons. As you can see, explaining things to a group of them isn't worth most people's time. After correction, do you really want to argue with a person who couldn't or wouldn't comprehend you? Being sheepish is valued more than intelligence. Welcome to human tribalism, try to keep your distance. We all do it. But Social Media is this fun thing where it takes the loudest idiots and makes them see knowledgeable by using that sheep tribalism we love. Even if you could prove it wrong with a 5 second Google search lol

cinnderly

False advertising.

Misinformation.

ActiveFunction3732

Wild animals use their tails to keep flies and insects away.

MsScarletWings

It’s not a dog. Some animals wag their tails as a sign of irritation. Heck, even dogs will sometimes wag their tails before absolutely mauling something. Not all excitement is friendly excitement

well, even some people may feel excitement to attack someone else

freqkenneth

See, the trick is if the animal goes into a big song and dance number about love and friendship then it’s okay to pet it But if it doesn’t even after being prompted with a full orchestra, then probably no

RonnieTheEffinBear

You are of course 100% correct, but I feel like this warthog was intent on fucking him up regardless of whether he tried to pet it or not. What would the right move here be, try to scare it off? Outrun it?

MrSkinnyFatty

That's the biggest issue here, damn warthog wanted the violence, it sought him out and did so in a non threatening manner just to fulfill it's violent act quota of the day.

SorenBlueHammer

The Jason Voorhees of the African savannah.

no-mad

I barely trust my cats. They are like please pet my belly i'm super chill. Wrong! it was always meant as a hand trap, designed to use all four feet in the attack including teeth.

sn0qualmie

Five out of six ends are pointy.

BrokeArmHeadass

I’d even say don’t try to pet domestic animals unless explicitly told it’s ok by owners, and always make sure you’re doing it safely. I know of plenty of people that have lost fingers or broken bones thinking that farm animals are all from petting zoos.

Dansk72

Yeah, even a friendly *looking* dog can have faster reflexes to bite your hand, then you will have to pull your hand back, especially if you are not being vigilant.

[deleted]

Any wild hogs are mean as hell. I live in Missouri and Wild Hogs are a Epidemic. My Dads friend was hunting and they chased him up a Tree stand and wouldn’t leave for hours and hours. They will kill you and eat you

DistortedVoltage

Even normal hogs are assholes. My uncle got chased by his own pig up a tree as well. Lets just say, my uncle had a lot of bacon the next few days.

NessyComeHome

We have / had wild boars up in Michigan. Escaped from one of those god awful "hunting reserves". You could shoot on sight because of how agressive they are, and the damage they cause to the environment.

[deleted]

Down here in Georgia if you see a hog you can kill it and keep it. They’re wild, invasive, and mean as fuck. Edit: Domesticated pigs will also 100% kill and eat you. They do not care. Don’t fuck with pigs.

Foborus

*NaWh hOw CaN yOu sHoOt an iNNoCeNT LivInG cReAtUrE, yOu BlOoDtHiRsTy mAnIaC!*

The_Mighty_Bird

Had an eye doctor in the town I grew up in die from being gored by one to death. They found his body days later when his wife reported him missing. His legs had been mostly eaten. Boars are the epitome of “fuck around; find out.” They aren’t cute slow critters like pigs.

Jalen3501

Pigs are just as bad, release a pig in the wild and it will grow tusk and more hair like a boar, pigs are basically yet to be activated wild animals

Undercrackrz

Pigs will turn feral within two weeks of being in the wild. Barely domesticated.

INTERSTELLAR_MUFFIN

I'm from France and we got boars a lot (Sangliers) and everyone knows not to fuck with them, they go for the big artery between your legs with their tusks. Loads of people get disemboweled or bleed out because of them. That's about the only wild animal we can see when we hike back home, but yeah, you learn to avoid them or go up trees fast.

VapidResponseUnit

There's a reason the Celts made their war trumpets in the shape of boars and used their imagery. They're all about the violence.

happytree23

There's a reason Dorothy is so terrified of falling into the pen with them.

SJane3384

I took a 911 call sorta like this once. Two drunk guys were camping and one thought it’d be cool to try and wrestle a javalina (kind of like a really angry pig/rat the size of a medium dog). Shockingly, the javalina wasn’t onboard with this and bit the guy’s finger off. A fun time was not had by all.

fucklockjaw

[But theyre so cute!](https://www.google.com/search?q=javalina&oq=javalina&aqs=chrome..69i57j46i10i433i512j46i10i131i175i199i433i512j0i10i512l9j0i10i131i433i512j0i10i512.3993j0j1&client=ms-android-mpcs-us-revc&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8)

SJane3384

They absolutely are, they’re one of my favorite animals! And the babies look like little loaves of bread with legs. All that being said, it is never a good idea to pet the wildlife lol. Especially angry pigrats.

jellosnark

I would 100% try to wrestle/cuddle one of these if I was drunk, especially if I didn't think it would be capable of biting off fingers. Glad I am able to learn from others though.

GeneralBlumpkin

Can confirm they're mean suckers

jackinsomniac

LOL, lived in AZ my whole life, and I've never heard anyone refer to javelina as "cute" before.

babyjo1982

But wookit em🥰

jackinsomniac

Lol I guess I can see, if you're only looking at clear, close-up pictures of them when they're calm, and fairly clean. I've never had to look up pictures of them, when you see them all around everytime you go out to the desert. They always looked like dirty, destructive, over-populated little pig-rats that will fuck you up, and fuck up or kill your pets, just like any other hog. Just like coyotes here, pretty sure they're so overpopulated you might not even need a tag to shoot them, just a hunting license. But still not many people do, because they're not good eatin' either. Apparently near their rump they've got a big stink gland, and if you puncture it in any way while cleaning them, it will ruin the whole batch of meat.

roastbread

I shall call it the Pig-Quoakka.

TinFoilRobotProphet

*Laughs in Javalina*

NoWingedHussarsToday

Not to point fingers but that sounds like a stupid behaviour......

SaltJellyfish4027

The old waggin of the tail warthog trick

CaulkSlug

Is that to keep the flies away from its asshole?

ackme

It's supposed to be a signal to keep the assholes away from itself.

Frequent-Distance938

Even lions fear them. They have serious attitude issues.

Obelion_

Yes that was warthogs. Saw that in a documentary. They are so agressive that it's not worth to hunt them, because the chance of injury for the predator is too high, even though they can definitely kill one

PDCH

"Help me, I'm a dumbass, HELP!"

FoxDiscombobulated38

They don't make the kind of help that guy needs.

Internal_Resist7629

His tail wagging like “I’m gonna fuck this guys shit up”

I grew up on a hog farm that had 5,000 pigs, I can speak from experience when I say that pigs are extremely aggressive, and those tusks are razor sharp, I’ve seen them tear into other pigs, and leave extremely large gashes in guys legs. Don’t F with pigs.

bluebook21

Pumba! What the hell?!

Logical-Use-8657

They need to sit people down before they fly to Africa and explain to people that animals in Africa are what people think animals in Australia are like. Africa is one of the most dangerous places to be lost in the wild because the prey animals will actually just kill you on sight if they see you a threat. Warthogs have to fend off lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, wild dogs, the works, ya think they lived this long by just walking up to things and staring at it expectedly?

HeatingsBackOn

The guys from Africa

Logical-Use-8657

Yet doesn't know rule 1 of the African bush; don't go near any animal that isn't a human.

rocknrollabb

Rule 2: don’t go near humans either

ugavini

It's a warthog you doos. No you can't fucking pat it. Jaasis.

Lu_CtheHorrible

Warthogs, boars and any kind of pig are some of the most terrifying animals to me. Those things will fucking tear you to peaces and eat you without a second thought. You don't even have to do anything to them, just be there. Nope. No, thank you. I'm out. Petting one?!?! I'd rather tear my own arm off.

DickSota

He got hit so hard that his accent changed

Fearlessly_Feeble

Good rule of thumb: if it’s an animal that militaries often name weapon systems after then it probably doesn’t want to be your friend. Applies to Tiger, Panther, And leopards.

rocknrollabb

Disappointing from a South African. We know better.

TJ_McWeaksauce

I’ve played enough of the Far Cry games to know this is a terrible idea.

Hmmd1

I loved the common sense from the missus, makes me feel like I am not the only one.

Just-STFU

No matter how friendly they may seem, wild animals are wild. Leave them be.

SlouchyFlyer

Someone’s gonna need 40 stitches

TransparentMastering

My understanding of warthog behaviour is: always expect violence.

TheLesserMansDog

I feel like the “t” is misleading… they just should be called “warhogs”

lastdazeofgravity

hogs are not friendly. that's like petting a hippo.

silkcity80

“Fuk around and find out “

Goliathvv

There's a reason why it isn't called Peacethog.

xbluewolfiex

People don't realise how dangerous warthogs and wild pigs in general are. I'm less scared of bears than I am of wild boars.

Accomplished_Yard984

This dude is wearing the exact hat I would picture on someone dumb enough to think they could pet a warthog.

MunchkinKazooie

"Gone awry"? No, this is petting a warthog going exactly the way it would always go.

[deleted]

I love seeing stupid people trying to pet wild animals…..

idgafasif

Hakuna matata

cashedashes

Wart hogs are known to be aggressive. At one time (might still be happening, I'm not sure) you could shoot one on sight any time of year in my state. I know there are ranches in southwest US where people shoot a bunch of wart hogs out of a helicopter.

FightingIsGay

So I was a combat tracker and was operational in a region that warthogs are native and had to deal with them in the field. They have really terrible sight. Terrible. When they encounter something they can't quite make out they approach it to get a smell and to touch it, so they can decide whether it's friend or foe. They have instinctual search patterns that prevent them from doing this to something like a large feline. They really hate humans but often can't tell we're humans from a distance, if one approaches you like this you are probably gonna be attacked once it gets a whiff. When we saw them coming along the trail in the jungle we'd get off the trail and let them pass right by, if you were still they would pass within a few meters and have no idea. But once in a while, after passing they'd get a little scent and turn around to investigate. They were never hostile initially but we all new what they'd do once they got close, so if one turned around like that protocol was to shoot it. That protocol happened after a point man got tibia broken by one of these warthogs that just casually sauntered up to him, he almost bled out and died in the jungle, had to be medically discharged.

zorrn_666

The help me at the end got me![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)

Monstera_girl

Rule number one for all wild pigs: do not. Just don’t. Whatever you’re thinking of that would make you be close to it, do not do it!

NJPokerJ

I wonder what injuries he sustained

NippleClencher

Judging by how quickly he started panicking im guessing the warthogs tusks gored through his leg/legs. Lots of people have died from having the artery in their thighs/legs nicked by these angry little shits.
