I’m sure that was scary when it popped off the wheel hub.
It would be nice if cars had sensors for this sort of thing, though lock nuts are generally to way to solve this.
Exactly, the car started shaking like crazy so we pulled over. Where I live lock nuts aren't really needed. I guess the exception is when you are travelling to the south of france.
Tbf the success of most thefts revolves around minimizing time required to steal the item
So someone trying to repair a failed theft is honestly even weirder than trying to steal it at all
Yes, we where provided with a rental for the rest of our trip by our travel insurance. Unfortunately them shipping the stelvio back for repairs can take 4 weeks.
We broke down on our last roadtrip last summer in Bavaria (needed an oil change, took a few days) so I know how distressing it can be - hope you're able to put it to one side for now and enjoy the rest of your break.

Sadly.
So they failed to steal it, and just left the bolts out? Can’t imagine being such a miserable person.
Yup, someone probably got too close and spooked them

Absolutely brutal.
A ton of damage and the thieves didn't even gain anything..
Sorry for your shit luck man. Could literally happen to anyone.
Happened to me once too and was annoying. They thought the wheel was a hubcap and tried to pry it off damaging both tire and wheel.
Where about in Southern France dude? I'm about to drive down in my Giulia, be good to know where to avoid!
It happened in the Arles/Avignon area. My best tip would be to not leave the car unattended in highway parking lots.
Thanks for the info and good luck with the rest of the trip - I hope you can get a rental for the rest of your break?
