It is perpetuating ideas that have kept ableism alive so long. Whether that is bad or not is far more complicated. I personally am conflicted about it's ethical merits.
Well being smart is a good thing, and being dumb is a bad thing. I think that trying to call that bad is not only silly, it is outright wrong. The need to whitewash everything has gone too far. Let's encourage intelligence at least.
Smart and intelligent = good at figuring things out, problem solving, knowledgeable, etc.
Dumb = the opposite
This is pretty much the universal definition
Well I think it would be better then to just use the word ignorant when talking about ignorant people, because it’s not as ambiguous as the word “dumb,” which very often gets used to insinuate ableist things, such as calling someone dumb for having trouble understanding instructions or taking a long time to respond to something. As for the chart, I can’t imagine how someone “looking dumb” or “looking low IQ” could mean anything other than something ableist, especially the low IQ, which literally refers to a disability.
No doubt.
His chaotic-looking hair and chronic booze-fueled drool on his lower lip would normally indicate a low IQ.
Then you watch the show and realize it’s quite the opposite, even with him being drunk most of the time.
His portrayal of Tywin is so great. He steals almost every scene he’s in.
Tywin is definitely very smart and competent, and his intimidating gravitas only adds to that.
Is he the objectively smartest character in the series? Not quite, but he’s definitely up there.
I don’t think many people literally think everyone who’s labeled high average or low IQ has actually taken an IQ test. It’s just a part of the lexicon for intelligence with half the syllables.
iiuc it's a good way of measuring intelligence but only between subjects of similar background, and was built off of one background (obv western, middle class+, educated thru high school). it fails totally when trying to compare between backgrounds. but (again iiuc) it still does okay if the background control is controlled. i.e., its still effective for testing general intelligence for a population in Somalia. the 'score' would be lower than a western population (which means nothing) but should still deliver a normal distribution and have meaning wrt life outcomes
It works tho
Top left- Looks smart, is smart
Mid left-looks smart, is average
Bottom left- looks smart, is stupid
Top mid- Looks average, but they're smart
Mid-mid- Average looking, average intellect
Bottom mid- they look average, but are stupid
Top right- They look stupid, but they're actually smart
Mid right- They look stupid, but they're average
Bottom right- They look stupid and they're stupid
Good idea. Maybe just say “smart/average/dumb” and “looks smart/average/dumb”
already thought of this, asked my friend, and they said that i should do this idk maybe i should go back to bed
Put your friend in low iq
More like "average iq/seems low iq"
Low IQ/Looks High IQ: Using IQ instead of intelligence.
That would only be sugar coating ableist rhetoric.
Sounds like something a dumb person would say
Is calling be dumb or smart ableist now? Is it bad?
It is perpetuating ideas that have kept ableism alive so long. Whether that is bad or not is far more complicated. I personally am conflicted about it's ethical merits.
Well being smart is a good thing, and being dumb is a bad thing. I think that trying to call that bad is not only silly, it is outright wrong. The need to whitewash everything has gone too far. Let's encourage intelligence at least.
That is definitely the most intuitive way to go about it.
What is your definition of “smart,” “dumb,” and “intelligent?”
Smart and intelligent = good at figuring things out, problem solving, knowledgeable, etc. Dumb = the opposite This is pretty much the universal definition
So, correct me if I’m wrong, your definition of “dumb” is basically intellectually disabled?
Can't reply to your comment but, no. Somebody can be ignorant or bad at solving problems without being disabled. Some people are just dumb.

I agree with you completely and I wish comments calling out normalized forms of ableism didn’t always get downvoted immediately

No doubt. His chaotic-looking hair and chronic booze-fueled drool on his lower lip would normally indicate a low IQ. Then you watch the show and realize it’s quite the opposite, even with him being drunk most of the time.

I don’t think many people literally think everyone who’s labeled high average or low IQ has actually taken an IQ test. It’s just a part of the lexicon for intelligence with half the syllables.
“IQ” in this context is generally understood to mean “intelligent”. They’re synonymous most of the time.
