Where are your contacts saved? Phone, SIM, Google or some other online account? Did you remove your SIM or switch accounts?

ljthefa

I haven't switched accounts and only have 1 sim. I never got a message from Fi that I'm back in the US and have reset my service and my phone multiple times. I think my contacts are saved on my email account(Google) and I went to said account and sync'd it but that didn't help

BaneChipmunk

What contacts app are you using? Google Contacts? If not, download it and open it. It should list all your contacts and where they are saved. Move any contacts that are not saved in your Google account (SIM, Phone, Other accounts) to Google. Use the Fix and Manage menu to fix duplicate, move things etc. Go to Settings > Google Contacts Sync. Disable and then enable it. This should fix this.

ljthefa

I verified that I'm using Google Contacts. Do I have to check each contact individually to see where they're stored or can I check an overall list? I did check some contacts that aren't working and they are stored on my Google account. Also I disabled and enabled contact sync but that didn't seem to change anything.

BaneChipmunk

Okay, what messaging app are you using?

ljthefa

I was using the default Google Messages app. About 30 minutes ago I switched to pulse and it works fine with my contacts. Went back to Google and it's still a problem.

BaneChipmunk

I don't know what the issue could be at this point.

ljthefa

I appreciate you trying. Thank you

The reason is really, really simple! Your contact phone numbers are registered without the country indicator before them, which is normal because you don't need it in your own country. But abroad, because you are using a foreign network, you contact info do not show in sms app because the phone cannot recognise it. You are not longer receiving a message from mum, whose number is "0000000", you're receiving a message from "+something 0000000". To fix this, just add the country indicator before each number in your contact list. In the future, save number with the country indicator from the start

ljthefa

Unfortunately I tried this and some numbers have the 1 and some do not. I tried putting the + as well but that didn't with either. Nothing I have googled has worked either.

Au-to-graff

What country are you from? I'm from France, you number are like this : 06 06 06 06 06 For this to work, I need to remove the first 0, so this would be the result : +33 6 06 06 06 06 Did you try that (with your own country indicator of course)?

ljthefa

I'm from the US so I have the numbers set as +1-123-456-7890

Au-to-graff

I don't know exactly how to do it with USA numbers but I really think that could fix your issue.

skepticscience101

This is it! I added +1 to the "mystery" contacts and solved the problem. This is in a Pixel 6.

Au-to-graff

How funny, I did re-read this comment last night!

cesargueretty

Just ran into this thread looking for the same answer. OP did you ever find a better resolution than changing each name and then changing it back?

ljthefa

Best solution is to go through your contacts and make sure they all have +1 before the area codes. I didn't correct them all, just people that I speak to frequently

cesargueretty

Damn, that's pretty lame. Thanks for replying

centralcbd

I figured out the solution. Just add the "+1" country code to your contacts that aren't showing the name in Google Messages. It fixed it for me.

ljthefa

I'll double check my contacts and see if this works when I leave the country again next month.

IndependentBrick8075

This happened to me when I was on a cruise in January/February. I have a Pixel, on Google Fi. Once I returned to the US it resolved.

ljthefa

That's usually what happens to me but I've been back in the States for a week and still no resolution

Diggerinthedark

Have you tried putting your home country code in front of one of the numbers in your contact list? Could be your phone is trying to be smart and it's broken something in the process..

ljthefa

I haven't but I'll try that. Thank you

ljthefa

Update: nothing has worked but this... I started using Pulse for texting just to see what would happen and everything shows up on Pulse. I don't know why only the default Google messages app isn't working

skateoroma

Yeah Google this sucks. I just got to Rome and came across this sub looking for a resolution. Seems like it might not be a 100% solution.

ljthefa

I never figured it out. The only thing I could do was change the name in my address book, then change it back and that fixed it. But I have to do it for every contact that's fucked up

SaddestClown

Que?
