There is an easier way! You have to swim slowly towards it. Dont press A just joystick it over then dive when you are above it. When you swim fast at a sea creature it spooks and runs
This is the only right answer to this conundrum. It took me more than half a year to find the solution to fast swimming creatures. Before that I almost threw my switch into my bed out of frustration haha
I used to do that too, but one time i spent over 10 minutes chasing a crab and had the thought “there is no way its supposed to be this difficult” which is when I finally googled it.
I usually don't have issues if I pin them against the net, I've had it where they just stop moving completely
the slow method you posted works too though so either way seems to do a good job
I read the other day that wearing a snorkel and water shoes helps you swim faster. I tested this and it holds true - but even better - I find it easier to catch sea creatures!
I had a 5 sea acorns in a row streak one time I think ,those things are a plaugeee

Sometimes mine will take fast left or right turns while I'm going slow that cross another shadow of the same size so I start chasing them. I decided I'm just into sea creatures for the easy bells, if I catch one of those evil guys it's luck. It's a bit like rocks, I find I'm getting better
Also on the hard to catch creatures underneath the water.If you come up beside them three or four inches away and then shoot sideways at them you can catch a lot of the fast ones.
I just tread water and move 'til I'm on top of them, then dive down. Sometimes they're right below me when I dive, and sometimes I have to do a little swimming under water, but I usually catch them pretty quickly.

I try to corner them or slowly swim them toward a wall. Then catch them when they turn around.

The amount of times that this has happened to me before is unreal! It's always the rare ones that swim so fuCKING FAST!
An easier way is to corner them at the edge of the net. Unlike New Leaf,they don't swim under it and escape.

swim towards the net (essentially pinning them to it) and sometimes they panic and stop moving... or even better, they swim right towards you

Always try to swim in the outter side so you can corner it
Swim it into the corner of the net then approach it slowly
