Those were my exact reasons for wanting to restart and having villagers I loved was the one thing holding me back but I did it and don't regret it at all! Starting fresh really gave me motivation to start playing regularly again and I'm having more fun this time around I think?? If you do choose to restart, I hope you find that it's worth it!
You can donate what you have or ask someone (like a friend) to keep your fav stuff, that includes flowers and bells and then once you restart, you can visit them and bring them to your island.
