EDIT: see below. I'm a convert to the deer camp. Animals love to prove there are no absolutes.
You can *see* the gap between paws, distinct claw marks and height. This is from a **bobcat**. Does no one have house/barn cats any more?
Deer rubs do not typically present as straight up and down. As others have pointed out, the tree is too large for what the deer are after. The tips of the antlers are not this fine and sharp, would not be so close together yet evenly spaced, and the gap in the middle of the lines would be just bizarre.
EDIT: u/julie_1111 Okay, I've spent way too much time looking at these photos. I think I've talked myself into being wrong.
This tree looks far too large for what deer typically rub on. And since they rub all over, you don't generally see even lines like this and that gap in the middle.
BUT! When I actually look at all the marks together, they form a pattern that I can't ignore. I think I see what's going on. This is a buck with a rack large enough for the outer tines to be on either side of the tree, but only just wider than the tree. He literally has no option but straight up and down, and the outer damage shows why. The outer tines are raking on the right side, the left is clear of the tree, just catching at the top when he tries to twist his head, which is why only the upper left has a few scratches and not the big rakes like the right.
How wide do you estimate this tree to actually be?
It’s hard to tell from the photo but the way the leaves were moved around the tree made me picture it being done by a cat, because of the way my goddamn cats stand when they scratch low on my couch.
Yup. My cat almost never touches my couch. She just lays on them. I have a ton of sisal wrapped scratching posts and cat trees that she enjoys. She does a little on an old carpet that is all scraggly that we got for free. I think it's a texture and position thing.
My cat shredded my couch before I found a scratching post she likes. Now she only goes for the couch when she's ticked off at me haha. I do think texture and position/height makes a big difference
Haha. Mine will only do it on the front edge of the recliner while I'm reclined. I haven't seen her do it in months.
They also get extra aggressive and "asshole-ish" when they aren't stimulated properly. I litter the floor with toys, and I try to play with her. She loves strings and feathers, and she knows exactly what the laser pointer is. She smacks it when she wants me to use it.
u/OshetDeadagain Yep this is what I think it is too, just went back out to look at it again. A buck big enough for the tree to fit between his antlers. There are light scratches on the left side and deeper on the right. The tree is 8-10 inches wide at this point and quickly narrows, I’m gonna go against tree stand guy even though I definitely don’t know shit about tree stands and say this tree is too small for one of those. It’s about five inches wide at the height it seems you’d hunt from.
Now I'm just confused. You think tree stand was set at ground level? Or you think someone who set it up mangled the tree only to less than 3 feet high? I'm not sure how many tree stands you've set up, but I've sure never damaged a tree that much doing so, and you don't touch the bottom of the tree at all...
And in the interest of education, bobcat paws are on average twice the size of a house cats, my dude. Even a small one is 14 lbs, which puts it bigger than most domestic cats. A big one can weigh as much as 40 lbs, and at that size people often swear they must be larger as size can be deceiving.
You're calling me clueless, but you sound like you've never even set foot in the woods, so maybe jumping straight to insults isn't your best look.
You’re not confused, just still clueless. Climbing stands make those marks when people are trying to get settled into them.
Your bobcat info is also way off. I know, you found numbers on the internet, so they must be true.
Use the internet to find video of climbing stands, you might even find out what I’m talking about.
(I’m in a treestand (ladder type) as I type this, waiting to set out bobcat traps tomorrow evening)
Here, I will do your research for you-
https://youtu.be/Tc9WOQlkwgI?si=yraOb2soP8IH5Xwe
When a person who’s inexperienced or out of shape (or both) is getting settled into one of these from the ground, the metal teeth will slip and slide and make the marks in OP’s picture before they get their weight styled and make their way up the tree. And then a chorus of absolutely clueless morons will say it’s a bobcat. Or a bear. Or whatever the hell else their indoor-only imaginations come up with.
The 5:30 mark is the part of the video you want to pay attention to. The guy using the climber in OP’s picture had a tough time getting settled into it. That’s what made the marks.
Hey so you do really have mountain lions in south Texas(though not as many as in the western US). I don’t think this post is showing puma sign, but *you* might find some someday!
[sauce](https://tpwd.texas.gov/huntwild/wild/species/mlion/): check out the first pdf for a distribution map
I’ve spent a lot of time in central texas exploring the wilderness and going into any cave or cave-like land protuberance I can spot and I’ve only seen tracks once. My understanding is they’re extremely solitary creatures with large territories.
I find comedy in you asking *who* and not *what*. Like, WHO…DID this to this TREE!?
But, because there’s two rows shredded vertically it definitely says large cat of some kind to me.
Bobcats and for that matter mountain lions more often, in my experience, choose scratching posts on horizontal or angled surfaces. They also have extremely sharp claws so their scratching posts can appear a little more subtle, though sometimes large pieces of bark flake off in certain tree species. It’s hard to see the details when I zoom in, but the inner bark looks like it may be frayed in both directions (material torn both upward and downward), which would narrow things down quite a lot. It also looks recent (made this year) due to the bright color, it hasn’t dried out fully and the inner tissue is still living.
It’s super fresh, walk these woods every day and it’s in the last week. The material is frayed going up and down for sure. I posted a comment with more photos.
Interesting about wild cats! I def don’t think it’s a cat, the marks are too wide.
Absolutely 100% a buck rub. This time of year when mating season comes to be causes them to scrape trees with their antlers as a means of spreading their scent, marking their territory, and intimidating other male deer into staying tf away from the buck’s territory.
Could also be a large cat tho, not gonna discount that possibly.
That's my take too. Whatever it is, the 'scratching' action on the tree goes in both an up and down direction which to my mind, eliminates anything doing that with claws. That leaves deer as the most likely culprit.
Agree, A cat rocks back and forth opening and closing paws, does not swipe open claws repeated in the same grooves. And claws are a fraction of the size of deer tines. Somehow this deer got stuck in a rut(or its fake).
I see the same but also wondering if it might just be the grooves in the bark itself looking like that. I’m also looking at how the stringy bits are pulled up (that’s what it looks like to me) maybe seeming like it’s a deer going up and down rather than a cat (bear is extremely unlikely outside of my imagination) scratching claws down? What do you think?
You ever seen deer antlers? Like how they have 4 or 5 sharp points on either side of their antlers? And have a penchant for rubbing those antlers on trees every fall?
Draw a diagram on how a bear with multiple claws on each paw, could make these straight lines.
I've watched literally 50 deer rub their antlers on trees over the years. They are all over the place. They don't go up and down in the same 5 grooves. Here is a good example.
You can't get picture 2 doing that.
I have trees on my property that look exactly like that right now and the deer on videos rubbing them making them. Saying it’s DEFINITELY not something it COULD be is wild
Are you seeing picture 2? I feel like I am in the twilight zone here. There is just no way for deer to make distinct, separate, vertical marks like that. They rub their heads every which way. I'm not trying to be an ass. Maybe you got deer with different behavior. Idk.
Edit. How about this? A bear comes along and leave the deep grooved scratches, then a deer comes along and fuzzes it up?
>. There is just no way for deer to make distinct, separate, vertical marks like that.
you're correct. It's a big cat doing both claws at the same time as they do. Probably bobcat
It's clearly two separate parts of the tree, something with claws made the long vertical scratches and then something else, probably a ballsy buck put the rub on what look like the other side. No way the same animal make all those marks.
My guess is Elk. This time of year is Elk Rut (mating), and they typically rub their antlers against trees and tear bark off. Unsure if it’s for dominance or what, just learned it in my class. Looks exactly like trees the professor had shown us
While elk do exist in Michigan, it’s extremely unlikely that they are around here. I live near flint, and I believe elk in the lower peninsula are in the northern counties.

Good lord, people. Why comment with such certainty if you have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about?
Here’s your culprit, OP-

The gashes on the tree are from the metal teeth sliding/sinking in.

Thats not a deer rub,but claw marks
Guy called said his name was Bob something?-
I think his last name is cat.
Oh Bob? Yeah I hear he's a pretty cool cat
Haha just got it.
Jus lookin for a little tail.
Isn't everybody?

Yep, I hate when people don't take the time to see how their pets operate. Especially cats, they're fascinating creatures.
just buy a couch out of scratching post material
This is the way
Yup. Bobcat’s using the tree as a scratching post.
Agree…and it looks like it was hit more than once by one claiming the territory…or possibly multiple cats.
u/OshetDeadagain Yep this is what I think it is too, just went back out to look at it again. A buck big enough for the tree to fit between his antlers. My first thought was cat
Complete clueless. My god. Bobcats are TINY, especially compared to what you’re thinking. Their feet are smaller than a housecat’s.
That will be your little secret.
It’s this- https://imgur.com/a/fHiqSrF
Now I'm just confused. You think tree stand was set at ground level? Or you think someone who set it up mangled the tree only to less than 3 feet high? Respectfully, it’s not from a tree stand - the tree is too small for that.
This tree looks like my furniture. And my bathroom doorframe. Because god forbid I pee alone
Tree is big for a deer to be doing it. Do you have mountain lions there?
Or bobcat?
Oh shit, yeah there are definitely bobcats
Probably what it was. Looks the same way my scratching posts for my cats do once they've worn down the rope covering a bit.
That's what I was thinking, we have a ton of these in south tx. We don't really have mountain lions down here so...

In theory, yes. Seems the marks are low for a big cat?
Not if it was doing a biiiiiig stretch. That’s what I’m picturing
In that case maybe the tree isn't as big as I thought. Bobcat? Lynx?
Bobcat or mountain lion
OP is in the lower peninsula. It’s not a mountain lion.
No, it could be a wide buck with tall brow tines
It may be a hyperbole, but it could be a wolverine
That would be cool
Last I checked michigan ran out of wolverines some time ago. So an unlikely culprit.
I think we’re fresh outta wolverines
Perhaps some nice Wensleydale, then?
Are you peckish? Esuriant?
They’re not allowed for the next few weeks.
I do hope they come back
This is why you gotta get your wolverines in bulk. Consider a Sam's club membership.
What? I just saw them play Penn State!
Should I call you Logan, Weapon X?
I vote bobcat. Pretty common animal, and the height is right.
I find comedy in you asking *who* and not *what*. Like, WHO…DID this to this TREE!? But, because there’s two rows shredded vertically it definitely says large cat of some kind to me.

Only problem with that is that this is fresh and it’s a new moon

Deer rub imo

Bro if it’s fake then someone’s out in the woods fuckin’ with me and that’s my least favorite guess so far
100% deer rub
Same I think it’s a big buck. The scratches on the bark are perfect browtine width
You can literally see the vertical, distinct claw marks. I'm not saying it is a bear, but it is something with claws and defiantly not a deer.
It's a claw deer!
Look at these know-nothings, downvoting you. I'm pretty sure I see the same claw marks, but not clearly enough to guess who it was.
I know. Look at picture 2. I've hunted deer my whole life. No deer makes 5 perfectly vertical lines in the bark. These people are idiots.
I see the same but also wondering if it might just be the grooves in the bark itself looking like that. Just looks like a young buck was fired up on a big tree to me. MAYBE a bobcat. I would think a bear would be higher up the tree
It's clearly two separate parts of the tree, something with claws made the long vertical scratches and then something else, probably a ballsy buck put the rub on what look like the other side. No way the same animal make all those marks.
it's not a bear it's a cat cat stretches up and does both claws at once hence the two mirrored claw marks. This tree looks exactly like my furniture
Perhaps a weredeer?
Oh yeah I forgot about those
Looks like the fibers of the inner bark have been pushed up. A cat would claw down.

Buck rub. Brow tines in the bark, rest of antlers on either side of tree, straddling it -if you will. Big bucks like big trees.
Height wise my guess is bobcat. Young cougar maybe?
Bobcat. No cougars that far east that I know of. Besides your mom.
There are cougars in Michigan. However, the DNR says that it isn't likely to be a breeding population. There are very occasional sightings in the lower peninsula, slightly more common in the upper peninsula.

No it really is that wide. It’s 8 or 10 inches wide at the base! I didn’t measure diameter

Agree with Bobcat or big ol’ Tomcat. Hi, I live in Genesee county as well!
Hey neighbor! It’s a deer!

Bear or cat. Those are claws, not rubs. Depends what area ur in. Local wildlife varies.
Yeah I’m outside of flint, MI - it’s not a bear

Hello fellow gen county friend!
Hello also!!! Im disturbed to learn we have bobcats just doing bobcat things running around
Right!! Kinda cool but also a little scary since we like to hike in the woods by us!
You don’t. It’s a human. Which, by the way, are ten million times more dangerous than bobcats.
As a woman, I’m way more wary of an aggro man in the woods than a bobcat although I don’t trust either
