On Packard near Platt, there is an Asian grocery store called Galleria, a European market, an Indian grocer called Bombay, and a Middle Eastern market called Aladdin's. Quite a few awesome local businesses in one little area!
There are two locations, one downtown on Liberty, one a bit south of campus on Packard. Relatively pricy. Kind of like the freshness advantages of farmer’s markets, with normal daily business hours, instead of limited hours once or twice a week. Growers resupply frequently.
Arbor Farms Market on W. Stadium is nice.
Also on the west side, Taco King is a combo taco counter / Mexican grocer.
For a unique shop that sells bulk foods, spices, teas, and candies, check out By The Pound on S. Industrial.
I would have characterized White Market as a true “small grocery store” but that place was janky as hell. And not there anymore. Maybe Village Corner as well but gone even longer (dating myself here).
Maybe controversial opinion here, but I hated Luckys. The one time I went there any the only black beans were $1.50 - this was like sometime in 2014-16, so maybe that's average now but 10 years ago I refused to pay that on principal. I used to shop only at TJs back then, now i pay 99¢ at Aldi. I get they had good options, but pantry staples should not be overpriced to compensate.
Lucky's priced themselves out of that neighborhood. Wrong location choice.
Companies buy others all the time and try a new "Brand". Kroger tried it with Lucky's for awhile.
Lucky's was all about the experience.....doesn't really work when you can't go to the store due to a pandemic.
I don't mind paying more for a nice store. The produce was always good, I loved the fresh squeezed OJ, the meat department and deli were great, and I could drink a beer while shopping. I'll gladly pay an extra 50 cents for black beans to get all that.
Produce Station is an excellent little market, but the prices are hard to stomach. I used to shop there a lot, but it's gotten a bit much in the past year or so.
Sparrow Market in Kerrytown is great.
Prices are high at the Produce Station, but I find their produce lasts longer and I dump less so I figure that makes up for the higher prices. They are less expensive than Arbor Farms and Plum.
The produce prices aren’t too bad, but almost everything else has increased substantially in the last couple years. And yes, the produce quality is some of the best in town.
Grocery is expensive at Produce Station. I go there when I want to treat myself.
The sandwiches and the salad bar for lunch are reasonably priced and very good!
Argus Farm stop has locations on Packard and liberty, a little pricey but good, since they use local farmers and businesses. Hua Xing on Washtenaw in ypsi is a great asian market, Kerrytown hosts the farmers market on Wed and Sat. Knights and Sparrow are both good butcher shops.
ALEZ Market in Ypsilanti is pretty good, they also have a bakery as well. Pro tip: if you’re not vegan/vegetarian try Yaha’s pizza next to ALEZ market, their pizza is pretty good and their phily steak sub hits the spot.
Galleria is great, and I recently stumbled upon the Hyundai Asian Market in the little strip mall tucked behind the Sunoco on the corner of Platt and Ellsworth.
ZZ’s produce is one of my favorites. Virtually none of their produce is marked as to what it is or how much it costs, but it is all pretty inexpensive. I took some friends there to play “can you name this produce”. The high score was 2 out of 10. Probably not practical from a shopping standpoint, but you’ll feel like you’re in a different country if you decide to go.
I was surprised to find out when I moved here that it's hard to find a good market in Ann Arbor that isn't way overpriced. Especially since AA keeps getting referred to as a foodie mecca. I was psyched to find Fresh Thyme as it's a spin off of one of my favorite markets, Sprouts.
Arbor Farms, Plum, Argus are all more expensive than Whole "Paycheck" Foods. Just not worth it though they do have good selections. Whole Foods here are tiny and limited in selection. I think part of the issue here is that markets sell wine and beer therefore limit their food offerings.
I do like Sparrow for great quality meats, especially the chicken. Monagans for the only seafood worth buying.
The various ethnic markets are great. I shop frequently at Dos Hermanos because in order to get good Mexican food I'm AA you need to make it yourself. I haven't ventured into Ypsi Mexican South American and want to try some.
The Asian Markets are good, just be aware they tend to specialize by region. Way 1 is more Korean, for example. I hear there is a good Middle Eastern Market South of Ypsi I want to explore. Packard and Platt has Indian, Middle Eastern, Eastern European and Asian all in one are, with DJs donuts.
Patel's on Washtenaw is great for Indian groceries.
The farmers markets are worth exploring, especially once you've experienced downtown and want better prices. Still the downtown farmers market is fun.
What I'm finding is if you want great food you need to travel away from Ann Arbor. My wife is from here and she even thinks AA has lost its way with the food scene since she's been away. It's ok for a college town if you like Midwestern flavors; heavy butter, cheese, cream and salt on everything.

I love Aladdin's Samosas. It's so sad now that Panda is closed. I shall mourn that delicious little restaurant forever.
that whole block is a 1 stop locally owned stop. its great. If you like mexican Tmaz is there and there pazole and tacos pastor are great.
Ahh thank you! I’m fond Galleria but haven’t checked out the others. I’ll see to it when I can!
They’re all in the strip mall right across the street - super convenient if you wanted to make a few stops!
Argus . All local food products straight from the farm
Nice! I’ll be checking it out, thank you!

The Arbor Farms deli is fantastic.
By the pound is fantastic. It's a trip for us maybe every 3 or 6 months but for what they sell it's a great value.
By the pound is great for bulk pantry staples.
I've been going to By the Pound since I was a kid. It's a great shop.
Coleman’s on Michigan Avenue near Carpenter, family owned and sources produce locally.

This is the first I’m hearing of this place! Thank you!

Co-op has recently expanded the grocery store into what used to be the cafe and has a ton of bulk bins. It’s such a great resource downtown.
Buy your meat at Sparrow, it's amazing. The bacon is absurbly high quality, and better prices than most supermarkets.
Cosigned….
And your fish should come from Monahan's!
That place is just a pricey boutique store. Like a Whole Foods except with aisles that aren’t even wide enough for a single person.

VC moved to 1747 Plymouth Rd
Wow had no idea!
Both locations of the Argus farm stop, people’s food co-op in Kerrytown. Way 1 Chinese grocery on Plymouth. Oh, and Arbor Farms.
Ypsi Co-op
Tsai asian grocery off Ann Arbor Saline Rd. Tippins is further south, mostly for pre-made food and alcohol.
Tippins has good chow.
Ooh okay, thanks for letting me know!
I wish Lucky's was still around.
I miss Lucky’s so fucking much

Lucky's didn't price themselves out. Kroger owned Lucky's and didn't want to run another chain that competes against their own brand.
That doesn't make any sense. Why close a kroger to open a Luckys if you don't want competition? That store used to be a kroger.

I liked Arbor Farms a lot when I lived on the Westside.
Aldi Dos Hermanos in Ypsi

Sparrow Market in Kerrytown is high end and has the best butcher in the city. Especially if you like fresh sausage!
We like Coleman. People’s food co-op is nice but so pricey.
People’s Food Co-Op is great! It’s on fourth downtown near Kerrytown

The chicken shawarma pizza there is great too.
Knights Market on Spring right off Miller has really nice meat and a tiny little market.
They also have one on the south side kitty corner from Zingerman’s Bakehouse.
Plum Market and Argus, but both are expensive.
Produce Station.
arbor farms but for GODS SAKE put your cart back in the CORRECT place PLEASE I’m on my hands and knees begging you people
Plum market Sparrow market Arbor farms

I like the [produce station](https://www.producestation.com/)
