He is spot-on there. It has gotten so bad that a lot of these right wing, so-called Christians consider Jesus to be too liberal and weak for them. I read an interview with a pastor talking about how he has heard from congregations who consider the Sermon on the Mount to be "liberal talking points" and basically don't want to hear about Jesus anymore because he is too weak for them.
“Multiple pastors tell me, essentially, the same story about quoting the Sermon on the Mount, parenthetically, in their preaching — ‘turn the other cheek’ — (and) to have someone come up after to say, ‘Where did you get those liberal talking points?’ And what was alarming to me is that in most of these scenarios, when the pastor would say, ‘I’m literally quoting Jesus Christ,’ the response would not be, ‘I apologize.’ The response would be, ‘Yes, but that doesn’t work anymore. On the one hand, I'm all for abandoning at least some of Jesus' teachings in favor of a series of guidelines that fit the modern world better. But tossing out Jesus for Trump is not a good call.
