It will 99.9% have been the snail, maybe a cory nibbled on it. but in my tank the snails ate all dead fish so fast i couldnt even find bones. The bamboo shrimp wont eat any dead fish as they are filter feeders
I once saw one of my largest pond snails freshly dead (with the others starting to crawl towards her), then had to go do something. 40 minutes later I came back and there was absolutely nothing except the shell.
The 3 Rs of recycling are *Reduce*, reuse, recycle.
Refuse is trash/rubbish, some of which can be recycled, but it is not a part of the 3 Rs of Recycling.
In this case, it's "refuse" as in "refuse to take the item in the first place" - you needn't reuse/recycle/repurpose if you never have the item! Rather than "refuse" where it means "garbage." Isn't English fun? ;)
It's not limited to English. In this case it's ref-use versus re-fuse. Plenty of similar examples in Madarin of words changing meaning when emphasized differently. In truth, even more abundantly than in English. Portuguese for example has tons and tons.
Yes, I'm delightful at parties thanks for asking.
Similar story. Checked a tank, all present and correct, check back two hours later, a Cory had gone, find a husk of a body sucked dry and some very happy assassin snails.
in my reef i saw an old firefish about 3in long lay down and pass away on camera at the front glass while at work. all that was left by the snails and crabs 5hr later was the spine. didn't even bother pulling it out.
I know right.
Sheldon does whatever he likes, even disregarding personal space. He gets right up in your business even if you are just calmly filtering the current
My mystery snail bit my finger! Menaces!
She had crawled up near the top and I would pinch her foot in the lid if I closed it. Her little face was sticking out of the water (they look so ugly out of the water btw) so I went to gently poke the snail, assuming she would retract and sink to the bottom. Instead she just started rasping my finger.
I think she even took a layer of skin off. I had to gently grab her and slide her down the wall an inch or two.
I'd say the snail. Snails of that size have a monstrous appetite, and they're insanely fast at it too. It only took my nerite and 5 ramshorns less than a week to clean all the green algae in my tank.
The shrimp is a filter feeder tho. That baby won't hurt a fly (or a fish).
Probably, the same happened with my Apistogramma borelli females they disappeared. I mean snails and shrimp are seen as clean up crew and I saw my corys nipple on dead shrimp as well. So it’s very likely that one rasbora died and the carcass got eaten.
100% snail. I have lost 3 guppies in the past year or so in my tanks w mystery snails and never a drop of evidence. I once saw the poor guy floating, went to find my net, and the body was gone 15 mins later when I returned. Savages.
In follow up to this, one of my blue mystery snails suicide jumped out of his tank and after several hours MIA I had to chase my puppy around to save him…
Needless to say the snail won and is still alive and kicking.
Conclusion: Mystery snails are highest on the food chain based on my most recent experiences.
Caridina/neocaridina shrimp? Yeah they'll nibble. The snail will totally devour. Cory may have a little taste too.
That's the sign of an efficient clean-up crew, at any rate!
I know he's a big guy, but he's really sweet. He is the helpful dude that would carry your groceries if he could.
Suspect 3 has a sheet a mile long tho, don't confuse that cute face with innocence!
Aaaah tricking me with the cute face. Suspect 3 looks like a sweet 'ol puppy istg, finding out that hiding behind that is a hardened criminal hurts. Lmao
LOL I've never found dead fish, but I've absolutely had fish die. But I have snails, shrimp, all sorts of fish... If something dies, it just *goes away*.
Cory and bamboo shrimp for sure working together. Cory stung the missing victim and paralyzed it and the bamboo shrimp carried the victim away from the crime scene. Mr mystery snail didn’t do anything. For sure Mr snail didn’t snack on the victim.
Hopefully nothing like that happened 😭
Yeah i never even noticed i had a dead fish, only after counting and recounting several times did i come to the conclusion that one really must have died. And counting those little fish is difficult as they are very fast
I call 3! I’ve walked in on my snails decimating a fish carcass once. I couldn’t even determine the cause of death! (Side note, it was some sort of infection. Lost the whole tank in 1 months despite everything)
I had this happen.. never solved it! But then later a mystery snail died and I saw the ramshorns and black mollies eating it. eeewwww
Shrimps are innocent!
Leave the poor filter feeder shrimp out of it. He’s innocent, look at his face.
You're right, I'm sorry 😔 Thankfully he has a companion to ease his hurt
They are currently bitching about you by the sponge filter, I bet you anything. 🤍
They were but Sheldon broke them up, being the real thug he is
guilty AF

Refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, cannibalism.
I know refuse is a typo but I love it
What is it supposed to be if not refuse?
I think he is thinking refuse like the word for trash. Not refuse as in "refuse to take use it"
But they're spelled the same way?
The 3 Rs of recycling are *Reduce*, reuse, recycle. Refuse is trash/rubbish, some of which can be recycled, but it is not a part of the 3 Rs of Recycling.
The 5 Rs of recycling starts with ‘refuse’ and end with ‘rot’. There is no rot if your comrades have munched you within minutes.
In this case, it's "refuse" as in "refuse to take the item in the first place" - you needn't reuse/recycle/repurpose if you never have the item! Rather than "refuse" where it means "garbage." Isn't English fun? ;)

Why reheat when you can re-eat?
Part of the tank, part of the stock!
Similar story. Checked a tank, all present and correct, check back two hours later, a Cory had gone, find a husk of a body sucked dry and some very happy assassin snails.

Damn, that actually made me sad.
he was old and had lost most of his coloring so it was not unexpected.
Yeah, snails are quicker than most give them credit for. Especially when food is involved
I was thinking the same thing. Snails will munch anything!
That snail looks well shifty.
I know right. Sheldon does whatever he likes, even disregarding personal space. He gets right up in your business even if you are just calmly filtering the current

Better be careful, she has a taste for human flesh now. Don't let her escape while you're asleep!
It’s the mystery snail. They’re detrivores and prefer dead and decaying food.
5 Ramshorn soon to be 500
I’m sorry this is so fucking hilarious having them rounded up on a suspect line
Apparently you are not the only one, I have never had this much upvotes and comments 😅
Srsly this shit is hilarious
That Cory looks like he’s been caught and the snail looks ashamed he helped 😂
I’ve seen my mystery snail completely devour a whole shrimp in less than ten minutes
its a conspiracy. they all in on it. don't be fooled by their peaceful behavior.
Oh my, for a split second i thought that shrimp was a tiny planted basket :D
Probably, the same happened with my Apistogramma borelli females they disappeared. I mean snails and shrimp are seen as clean up crew and I saw my corys nipple on dead shrimp as well. So it’s very likely that one rasbora died and the carcass got eaten.
Yeah it was the snails. That's how I knew my bamboo shrimp died. Snails swarmed him immediately.
All three.
The answer is that it was all of them, but probably mostly the snail.
Probably all of the above
I blame Snail. I blame Snail for a lot of things.
Don’t worry…you’ll find the bones in your substrate when you do a deep clean.
They all ate it.
Snail
Blame the snail. Hes guilty. Look at em!
The filter feeder is too gentle to do that. He's a very kind sea roach.
snail, definitely
I have a near identical mystery snail actively eating a dead shrimp in my tank as I write this. It was the snail.
Your bamboo shrimp has fans for hands so no he is not the culprit. Both the others could clean up though.
ALL OF THE ABOVE LOL if it was already dead if not the shrimp would be the only one that may kill a smaller fish then they would all eat it

Snail and shrimp are clean up crews. They will do their job.
That’s the most guilty looking snail I’ve ever seen
Caridina/neocaridina shrimp? Yeah they'll nibble. The snail will totally devour. Cory may have a little taste too. That's the sign of an efficient clean-up crew, at any rate!
What type of snail is that? It’s adorable
Apple snail\mystery snail
Also you could have had a jumper, I lost one Kubotai to jumping in my rimless. Found him a month later all shriveled up. :(
There is a lid on the aquarium, so i dont think that happened
Suspect two found the body and ate a nibble. Suspect three followed Suspect two and ate the WHOLE thing one night when no one was looking.
Definitely the snail. Found my minnow dead after coming home from a trip, then found three snails cleaning it up.
How do you keep the gravel so clean
Its fairly new, the tank has only been set up about a month
Suspect 1, officer. He looks guilty. 2 and 3 look like they know it's him and have been threatened into silence. Mob boss shrimp fr
Lmao
It's all three!
Nah, number 2 is too young, look at that innocent face!
LOL I've never found dead fish, but I've absolutely had fish die. But I have snails, shrimp, all sorts of fish... If something dies, it just *goes away*.

Def not the Cory. He looks like he's about to start sobbing.
Yeah Im very sorry for accusing him.. 😔 I should have known better
I saw my snail on top of a fish that died.....I decided to leave it for a bit and see what happens. The next morning it was gone without a trace.
Yeah i never even noticed i had a dead fish, only after counting and recounting several times did i come to the conclusion that one really must have died. And counting those little fish is difficult as they are very fast
My guess is definitely snail. They work fast and leave nothing.
Snails are menaces when it comes to dead fish. Even the smaller ones can clean one up before you’ll ever notice it’s dead.
Definitely Suspect 1 with help from 2 & 3.
I call 3! I’ve walked in on my snails decimating a fish carcass once. I couldn’t even determine the cause of death! (Side note, it was some sort of infection. Lost the whole tank in 1 months despite everything)
Oh man thats too bad!
Well, stuff happens in this hobby. Snails are reaaaaaally opportunistic eaters so I’m placing all my bets on him
Yeah i've heard it happen, thankfully have never had a wipe out before
That Cory has a deer in the headlights look, if I ever saw one...
Pleco are amazing body disposal.
Team effort
I had this happen.. never solved it! But then later a mystery snail died and I saw the ramshorns and black mollies eating it. eeewwww Shrimps are innocent!
Shrimp is a filter feeder. He eats with his hands.
Filter, on your floor or apple and Corey ate all but bones
Is it a waterfall shrimp? I love those lil guys, watching them sit in front of the filter was so cute. My bet is on the Cory and snail. Joint effort
