Like most other fish. I love the hobby, but I HATE so many of the other people who are into it as well. The waterways in my area have so many invasive species that it just breaks my heart.
I had family in Clearwater and I remember they were giving rewards for decimating the lionfish population for the same reasons. Invasive species are a serious threat
They are called Lionfish Derbies. The sale of lionfish should be made illegal (outside of lionfish fillets for food). If anyone is in my area, please join us https://myfwc.com/fishing/saltwater/recreational/lionfish/challenge/
I live in Canada and once caught a big orange goldfish in a local lake. People don't think goldfish live so long and can get so big. They just think they are an easy pet that they can just keep in a little bowl.... my goldfish are bigger than my hand in a 50 gallon tank and maybe around 20, pretty good for two cheap fish that were meant to be pet food.
Yup! Mine is around 12 years old and he is huge (and he is also in a very large aquarium). I expect him to live another 20 years or so. People donāt realize that when they get them. I know too many people that say that āmine lived for like a week - lolā. I then have to tell them that they very much killed their fish. I would be totally fine with people no longer selling them (as well as betta fish). You can go to any pet store and ask them for any sick/unsellable goldfish and they will gladly give you a bunch. They arenāt meant to be in tiny aquariums (or cups). Goldfish are carp ffs and donāt even get me started on those poor betta fish. :(
I have a coworker who wants to get a betta for their office. They were telling me they had fish growing up and all of them died and laughed it off.
I've been trying to educate them on proper fish care (I'm still new but have dove headfirst after adopting a betta that came in a 1 gallon prison.) They said " I don't care about them I just want one cause it's cool". Ugh. Some people should never be in charge of any other life.
People are shitty. I remember someone told me to judge based on how they treat animals. That has stuck with me. If someone is kind to all forms of life they generally are kind people. People with no empathy towards animals, fish mammals etc anecdotally have low empathy to other people
two channa species (c. argus and c. marulius) have become established invasive species in parts of the country so thereās a blanket ban on i believe all channa and parachanna species
They are SO invasive (and terrible for native life) that in every state they are in you literally donāt need a fishing license to fish for them and there is no limit. Also youāre literally not allowed to release them after youāve caught them.
No your not supposed to release them, huge fisherman and this is a huge misunderstanding that everybody thinks is true but it is not
Instead of downvoting use google and u will see that its not a law on any states DNR
Edit 2 yall might jus be mad that im a fisherman lmao, catch and release only if that helps
State? Selling is illegal yes, releasing is not in any state, unless that changed within the last couple months which I highly doubt. Even in florida which has it by far the worse its not prohibited. (Illegal)
SC, and the DNR guidelines are clear: releasing is prohibited.
I was incorrect however, keeping them without a license is also prohibited.
if it wasn't bad enough that they are one of the most aggressive fish out there, ***they can also become somewhat amphibious***, so they can travel across land to another body of water. That is what lead them to spread across so much of the US.
I find it's easier to explain to people when I say it like that, I forgot this subreddit was full of fellow fish nerds. most people I encounter are like "fish cant leave water, that defies the rules of logic, how is that possible"
If they can't breed with it, they'll eat it. And they will eat anything that moves. They are large and wildly aggressive. Ours died at 2 feet 2 inches and could swallow your fist. He launched himself out of the tank to attack my husband (no shit) and passed from his injuries. He was beautiful though. Very expensive to feed.
I'm all for keeping things positive, but I gotta agree that the person feeding that fish is an idiot. They've got a mouthful of extremely sharp teeth, and [there's an episode of River Monsters about these fish.](https://youtu.be/UpC-LdHOza0)
ps - this is not my fish, nor are those my fingys ā¦ a friend sent this to me yesterday and Iām just curious of the species as Iām in the aquarium hobby.
Let us know how that goes with that "trick" when he's like a foot long lol.
Definitely a snakehead. Not sure where you are located but check local laws. They are illegal in most states.
I should have clarified that those are not my fingers.
And it is not my fish.
I keep frontosas.
A friend sent this to me yesterday and I was curious what species it was.
They're beautiful fish, IMO. Mean as the devil. Even above things like aggro Managuense and Dovii cichlids. Set of teeth that are something out of a horror film. Single fish only aquariums.
Snakehead variant for sure, but I'm wondering where you procured this handsome fish. Unless you're in like Tibet or something wouldn't you have to fish it out of the water yourself since it's an invasive species?
Edit: Then again, lion fish are sold in stores and they're invasive.. So scratch that last tidbit lol
It is a swimming agent from Hell! It eats anything it can catch, and tortures things too big to eat. They have almost destroyed many ecosystems in the US. They have only one mission: to destroy. Illegal everywhere in the US. You can research it and will be stunned at the damage they have caused in this country.
For context, check out what lionfish have done to the Atlantic off the southern coast of the US and the Caribbean. My son, a SCUBA diver, participates I lion fish competitions; they have competitions for boats bringing in the largest, smallest, biggest number, etc. Many reefs and wrecks that were habitats for all the other fish, eels, etc, are now inhabited by lionfish only. They have no predators in that area (theyāre from the Pacific) so they have proliferated to a hellish number. If you are a SCUBA diver, DM me and I can give you info on lionfish derbies. *** And they are edibleā¦ they taste wonderful!
Bruh, the ban on all snakeheads was actually unwarranted since beside two species that all people know about, most species are tropical and less invasive.Imagine if all loricariid fishes (pleco and friends) were banned from the aquarium trade because of the case of the Common Pleco.Maybe i see these cases with rose tinded glasses, but if people were more responsible with their pets, this goofy ass law would not had been a thing.ā ļøI also see the point of the law a bit as well.
To be honest, snakes require more care than an average fish since they grow big,eat a lot,and their temperament can differ from species to species.Think of them as giant bichirs! So few people can dedicate a lot of space for a single fish.
Iām not sure if youāre in the US, but if you are, you need your friend to kill that fish immediately. Itās illegal, incredibly aggressive, and invasive. Definitely better fish to keep.
Sorry now I feel bad because there are lots of reasons someone may not know some particular English vocabulary and ultimately you were really just trying to be helpful. I apologize for calling you stupid, itās probably not the case.
I'm unsure if you're being funny(badly) or being serious...but they weren't trying to spell stupid, they were trying to spell stumped. Which they did. Correctly.
"stumped
to be unable to answer a question or solve a problem because it is too difficult"
Nope, āstumpedā is the exact word I chose to communicate my uncertainty of the identification for this particular aquatic specimen.
Beyond that, I refrain from using words (like āstupidā) that can be categorized as ableist, insulting, or generally sophomoric.
Cheers.
DNR? Michigan?
See, snakeheads do very well in most climates, from tropical FL to cold MI.
Water quality is also no issueā¦ snakeheads can breath air.
It's a type of snakehead
I had one of those bad boys. Most aggressive fish I ever owned. Peace
I would think common snakehead.
Orange-spotted snakehead (Channa aurantimaculata)
Many thanks! š
His *finger* was about to be stumped.
zing
Channa sp. Snakeheads like this one are illegal in the US so my identification skill with them is nonexistent.
Do you know why they are illegal? And if so, mind to elaborate?
They are extremely invasive and have been introduced into US waterways by irresponsible aquarium owners.
Like most other fish. I love the hobby, but I HATE so many of the other people who are into it as well. The waterways in my area have so many invasive species that it just breaks my heart.
Looked at your username. Checks out. Florida is loaded with invasive species.
I had family in Clearwater and I remember they were giving rewards for decimating the lionfish population for the same reasons. Invasive species are a serious threat

Please read their comment again, they said that you shouldnāt release them. So you both agree.
He said your "literally not allowed to release then" at least thats who im replying to
> Do you know why they are illegal? *watches video*
Snakeheads are extremely resilient, invasive andā¦ hungry. They are a threat to native species and therefore illegal to buy or own them.
In my state, DNR prohibits releasing them or selling them. Once they are out of the water, they don't care-I can kill or keep it.
State? Selling is illegal yes, releasing is not in any state, unless that changed within the last couple months which I highly doubt. Even in florida which has it by far the worse its not prohibited. (Illegal)

Another myth, but your right in a way that they can be out of water for multiple hours at a time, kind of like a catfish

Real shame I really want one
Yeah they're neat. An old co-worker of mine kept some when he lived and japan and loved em
Itās an elusive finger-eater
it definitely will eat fingers when it gets bigger
Snakehead
Thats an idiot in his natural habitat, or are you talking about the snakehead?
Fish is a snakehead. Human is an idiot.
Oh or did you mean the person in the video is an idiot? That is not me, still a little unnecessary though. Keep it positive!
I'm all for keeping things positive, but I gotta agree that the person feeding that fish is an idiot. They've got a mouthful of extremely sharp teeth, and [there's an episode of River Monsters about these fish.](https://youtu.be/UpC-LdHOza0)

Jesus thatās the cringiest comment Iāve read in a while.
Don't be mad because people think the fish is shitty and the keeper is stupid.
This comment gave me a headache.

You can't expect nuance from the American hivemind.
This belongs on r/unexpected lol, cool fish
I think that's a worm in your hand, but I could be wrong
These snakeheads get huge. They're illegal in the US because they're very invasive.
Your finger might be stumped after thatā¦
Orange spotted snakehead I believe all snakeheads are banned in the USA but I doubt that people still have not gotten rid of the ones that they have
Oh no that's a snakehead, dude. Kill it with fire.
Iām not sure if youāre in the US, but if you are, you need your friend to kill that fish immediately. Itās illegal, incredibly aggressive, and invasive. Definitely better fish to keep.
Thatās a jack dempsey bichir. No I have no idea
That or an aggressive Wishiwashi.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
That backfired on you. Backfired: to bring a result opposite to that which was planned or expected.
sorry i am dumb for doing that
B+ on a wanton personal attack. F- on identifying the fish. Youāll do better next time - proud of you!
i meant u spelled stupid wrong its not spelled stumped its spelled stupid it doesnāt mean you are stupid it means you spelled stupid wrong
but stumped is a word, and he used it correctly
Are you actually so stupid yourself that you donāt know stumped is a word?
sorry i am really dumb for that :( didnt mean to be mean

Its a hunter and your finger is prey
Snakeheads are bad ass.
Fish
Snakehead. MF bit your finger at that š¤£š¤£š¤£
Looks like a snakehead. They are vicious.
Looks like a snakehead
