Their frenzied buzzing around when they see you coming with a snail and then that **DART** when you drop it is just so joyful. I love them. Them, loaches, tire track eels. And certain moray eels. When a moray eel befriends you, it's a great thing.
I love them so much.
Do some research on pea puffers or figure 8 puffers.
Percy is a green spotted puffer (brackish). They’re honestly such a joy to own and so much fun. A little more high maintenance than other fish, but worth it.
Yes’ they’re also called leopard puffers or Burmese puffers
>The Leopard puffer belongs to the Tetraodon order of fishes, is also known as the Green Spotted puffer, Spotted Green pufferfish, Green Spotted pufferfish, and Burmese puffer, and has the scientific name, Dichotomyctere nigroviridis.
Figure 8s are brackish too unfortunately. Hairy puffers, dragon puffers, amazon puffers (shoaling puffers, get at least 5) and potato puffers are all true freshwater though
That’s the next setup I’m working on! I had an extra 20 gallon so I made a jungle-y planted tank and I’m waiting on it to cycle to get some peas.
All puffers are just amazing. Once you get one you don’t go back lmao
How many peas do plan to put in your 20 gallon? I have a 20 gallon long with 6. I was thinking if I could add one or two more but they all get along so maybe not.
I’ve read a lot that they “shoal” kind of. 6 in a heavily planted 20 gallon is ideal with more females (2-3 females per 1 male) so I’m thinking I’d start with that and see how it goes. My tank is SUPER planted — it was basically a tank where I put plants to grow out for a bigger tank. But then I got carried away and ended up making a jungle scape lmao
I think if you just add 2 more females, they SHOULD be fine. Someone in one of my threads says they breeed pea puffers let me tag her and she might be able to give more information.
ETA: @u/DanyStormborn87 commented that they had 8 in a tank they might be a better person to ask!
Thank you! Yes mine seem to be getting along much better. I originally had them in a heavily planted fluval flex but I was seeing way too much chasing by one of them. The 20 long is heavily planted and has driftwood and rocks, so far they seem to stick to groups of two or three but I haven't seen any fighting. I do notice that at feeding them they dont all come together like in the flex. Don't kill me but I also have a scarlet badis in with them and there is zero aggression from them or the scarlet badis.
Do you know your F to M ratio? Or does it matter? (I hear mixed opinions on it — some say if it’s planted enough it doesn’t matter, others say you NEED more females to combat aggression)
Also—where did you get your peas? I’m trying to find a reputable online supplier. Ideally captive bred. There’s some stores near me that carry them but honestly I don’t like how they care for some of their tanks so it makes me wary of purchasing from them lmao
I have half and half. Four females and four males. It really depends on their own personality. I started with just two peas in a six gallon cube, Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I quickly discovered they were shoaling fish and decided to get six more. I ordered them from Aquahuna by the way. I always would deworm them as a precaution anyway, but they all arrived fine. I put them all in at the same time to the 20 gallon. I did that because I didn't want them to establish a territory and then introduce new friends. It all went over smoothly, and I have no issues. Well, I do have two males that occasionally will circle each other and puff (which is pretty funny) but they have only done it like three times in six months. I have one that I take special care of because he gets bullied out for food and is a bit smaller than the others, but aside from those couple of things, I have no issues. No crazy fighting and I haven't had to separate or quarantine anyone, aside from one of my males being found in my filter on my birthday Sunday. He is doing fine now though! I noticed you called Persephone a serial killer. Well, I have: Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Then I have Bundy, Gein, Dahmer, Zodiac, The Ripper, and The Night Stalker. Heheh.
I’m bribing myself with a new tank and pea puffers if I can make it through my math class without shredding my gpa. For my Master’s I get a 120 gallon and a whole school of Boseman’s rainbowfish 😁
I love the green spotted puffers so much. I have 8 peas and they are so fascinating, I would love one of these just don't have a brackish set up. She's so freaking cute 😭😭
I love her ❤️ I actually want to do a pea puffer setup next. I’ve gotten really into planted tanks and made a friggin huge jungle scape I want to add some peas too. I’m becoming a puffer addict lol
Oh same. They're my fave fish and I culture four kinds of food for them, spoiled.
Does she bring spring and summer when she arises from Hades and then fall and winter when she goes back?
They quickly became my favorite — I understand the obsession with them now. Truly haven’t cared for a fish with this type of personality before. It’s been a blast.
And yes she does. Just have to keep her away from plants / flowers — she gets easily distracted by them. 😌
She’s in a 30g for now until she gets bigger / full sized. I want to do some kinda cool brackish scape with driftwood for her.
and nope no tank mates. She is a demon and will kill everyone. 👹
I never made the connection that Tater is a pufferfish. Super obvious now you say it since he’s basically an orange balloon but I guess I never imagined there would be pufferfish that burrow into the sand.
Reddit hasn’t blessed my dash with Tater in a while, I hope they’re doing good
So they actually are born in freshwater in nature (they can tolerate Fw for periods of time), but move towards brackish/marine conditions as they grow older. When I bought her she was sold to me in freshwater and over time / water changes I acclimated her to brackish conditions since they thrive in those and eventually will get her up to full marine. Stores will usually sell green spotted puffers as freshwater since they’re young still.
((((Edit: figure 8 are brackish my bad! Amazon are freshwater !))))
Edited to add:
I will say though, if you want a GSP, learning how to setup a brackish tank really isn’t too complex and there’s a lot of resources online. I had no problems converting her over to brackish water and it’s not difficult to maintain IMO
They are usually violent but my GSP (begrudgingly) tolerates 6 of his Molly tank mates. I'm guessing he's just too lazy to go after things that actually move, unlike his feeder snails 😂
LOL. I’ve read it really depends on the tank (making sure they have enough space to be bossy) and age, as well as how annoying the tank mates are lmao.
I’ve seen how she goes after bloodworms and snails so I’ve erred on the side of caution and decided she’s a serial killer lmao
I want to eventually work her up the marine — it seems like it’d be less maintenance in the long term.
But yes. I’ve learned puffers have their own “personalities” and some are evil blood hungry demons while others are pretty mild.
The only hurdle I had with brackish was learning not to up your salinity by more than 0.01-0.02 in a week span or the tank cycle can crash. Other than that the only other issue is brackish plants are real hard to come by.
figure 8s are indeed brackish as well. Amazon puffers look quite similar and will stay in freshwater their whole lives though. They are shoaling fish, so make sure to get 5+
Yes! Puffers are so cute!! The lil eyeball stare into the depths of the shell felt so murdery and I love it. Pea puffers are my curret goal fish, getting my feet wet with some good ol gupps first.
That’s how I started! Guppies etc.
Really helped me pinpoint my parameters and such. Eventually worked up to brackish / Persephone. She will be converted to marine as she gets older.
It’s all part of the hobby. It’s so much fun to learn all the habitats and “quirks” of each species.
I bought one of these bastards when I was a kid, not knowing anything about keeping fish. I woke up one morning and 90% of my tank was half eaten with a pretty happy looking pufferfish. I still haven't forgiven him or myself.
Zaphod, my GSP, was basically a “puppy with fins”, and his favorite food was crayfish (which I also felt bad about so it was a rare treat for him) you could actually see him plan his attack strategy, which invariably meant his first strike was to declaw the crawfish, literally bite off the claws where they join the carapace
then depending on his hunger level, he’d either take out the eyes, blinding the crawfish, or go right for the killing bite at the base of the rostrum (spike in front of the eyes) and then consume the crawfish at his leisure, always saving the claws for last (‘dessert’?)
Omg. I hear you. I have snakes too and even though I feed frozen thawed sometimes it makes me a little sad — but the circle of life and stuff.
They’re so fun to watch hunt. Her big eyes looking around crack me up.
Although it may suck for the live food, live food stimulates the puffer’s hunting instinct and enriches their lives
Thankfully I had a small tank of ramshorn snails I kept for his primary feeding, along with freeze dried krill I could hand feed him…
When I kept dwarf puffers, they loved bladder snails and live black worms
There’s really cool freshwater ones too :) potato puffers. --. Pea puffers. There’s puffers for every tank type! Get one. They’re worth the investment and time.
ETA: figure 8 are brackish my bad
Figure 8s are brackish, not freshwater, but amazon puffers look very similar! They do however need friends, so make sure to get 5+
abei puffers, red eye puffers, potato puffers, and dragon puffers are all also super fun and can live alone.
GSPs are so much fun! Yours looks huge too. How big is she?
Before mine went Houdini, there was not a lot of Information out there about their natural habitat or full grown size
She’s actually not that big — I just zoomed in from far away because I wanted to catch this moment. She’s maybe an inch and a half long right now.
And yes. I had to do a lot of research. I’m a freshwater person and really wanted to do a marine tank next. But I wanted to work up to it, so a brackish fish (that eventually I can convert to marine) seemed like a really good “first salt” project. She’s been a dream to own and I have learned so much.
Love it! I read that they transition from fresh to brackish water as they grow and mature. Is that true, or is it best to just keep the salinity in the water at a certain level? What is your preference for optimal water parameters?
Yes that’s true! They go from fresh to brackish and eventually prefer full marine.
She’s currently at 1.008 salinity. She was FW when I bought her and I went up by .001-.002 each water change because they really should be in brackish water as soon as you can slowly transition. A sweet spot would be 1.008-1.012 salinity while she grows.
Once I move into my house I’m planning on setting up a marine tank because I’ve always wanted a salt tank.
For now, she will move into a bigger tank with brackish conditions (55, but lots of rocks and driftwood so it cuts the space down a bit) as she gets bigger and once I have an established marine tank she’ll move into that as an adult.
ETA: I know she seems small (she’s about 1.5 inches in a 30 gallon now) and 55 seems HUGE for her. But honestly she LOOOOOVES to explore and puffers use every. Single. Inch. Of their tank. I have an extra tank I got off marketplace I’m currently collecting driftwood for to move her into and make a little underwater maze for her.
Honestly not at all. The hardest part was converting her to brackish — I went up by .001-.002 salinity per water change until I got her to 1.008 so I didn’t crash her cycle. But that’s not really hard at all.
I already had bloodworms and mussels etc. on hand for my other fish and she eats them.
The only hard part I’d say that CAN be hard for owning puffers is access to snails. I have a colony (lol) of pond snails and other “pest snails” (I’d ask petco or pet smart if they had any in their tank and they’d give them to me) in a 5 gallon I use to feed her 1-2x a week. They breed quickly too so it was easy. I knew I wanted a puffer so when I set up her tank to cycle before getting her, I also set up a snail tank.
So I’d say if you get a puffer, start working on a small snail colony tank. Just a cheap tank with some plant cuttings and let them go crazy in there. It makes feeding so much easier.
Some are freshwater. Some are saltwater. And some are both! The one in the video is a green spotted puffer. They are born freshwater, transition into brackish as they get a little older, then are full saltwater when grown.
I got mine during the brackish stage. Now he's in a 75 gallon full saltwater reef tank, with plans on going to 200 or so gallons when I buy a house next year.
Do you have yours with tank mates in your marine tank? I want to do a big marine tank when she’s bigger and I move into my house. Slowly convert her over. I’ve heard mixed reviews — some say NO TANKMATES. Some say it depends.
Ugh that’s awesome. I’m hoping I can get a big ass tank and then get some clowns and start with that once she’s full marine. I might end up messaging you for tips when that day comes LOL
Omg beautiful 🥹🥰
And is he that fatty on the far left!! Omg. So big and happy.
See this is what I wanna show people when they say that GSPs don’t NEED to go marine. Literally look how happy and healthy yours is right now. So big and chunky.
We want them to thrive, not survive 🙏
There’s freshwater — figure 8, pea puffers, potato and Congo puffers
And then there’s brackish / salt. Percy here is a GSP and in brackish conditions now, with the plan to go full marine. :)
Honestly these have got to be the most curious fish (that you can reasonably keep)
They are! She’s so much fun to watch explore. So curious and her big eyes make me laugh.
Their hovering is just so great.
Their frenzied buzzing around when they see you coming with a snail and then that **DART** when you drop it is just so joyful. I love them. Them, loaches, tire track eels. And certain moray eels. When a moray eel befriends you, it's a great thing.
Helps that their eyes are in a constant state of “OOOO WHAT IS THAT?!” 😂
God they are cute little devil murder machines
Perfect description So cute. Will kill anything in the tank. Murder bean.
MURDER BEAN LES GOOOO
>pea puffers Hmm, those Marimo ball that had zebra mussels in them wouldn't have stood a chance!
Yes. And we love them. #**ALL SNAILS MUST DIE!** That is their motto.
Annnnnddddd now I want a puffer thanks -_-
I love them so much. Do some research on pea puffers or figure 8 puffers. Percy is a green spotted puffer (brackish). They’re honestly such a joy to own and so much fun. A little more high maintenance than other fish, but worth it.
Are green spotted puffer the same as a leopard puffer? I had one that looked exactly the same except I swore he/she was a leopard puffer???
Yes’ they’re also called leopard puffers or Burmese puffers >The Leopard puffer belongs to the Tetraodon order of fishes, is also known as the Green Spotted puffer, Spotted Green pufferfish, Green Spotted pufferfish, and Burmese puffer, and has the scientific name, Dichotomyctere nigroviridis.
Ahhhh got it ! Thanks!
Figure 8s are brackish too unfortunately. Hairy puffers, dragon puffers, amazon puffers (shoaling puffers, get at least 5) and potato puffers are all true freshwater though
I've been seriously considering a pea puffer after seeing a bunch of posts on here
That’s the next setup I’m working on! I had an extra 20 gallon so I made a jungle-y planted tank and I’m waiting on it to cycle to get some peas. All puffers are just amazing. Once you get one you don’t go back lmao

LOL part of the hobby is experimenting and seeing what works. If it works in your tank and everyone is healthy and happy, then it works for you!
Thank you!!!
I have 8 in a heavily planted 20 long!

Awww she is adorable!! 🥰
She cracks me up all the time. I just love watching her explore the tank or watch me around the room
I love the green spotted puffers so much. I have 8 peas and they are so fascinating, I would love one of these just don't have a brackish set up. She's so freaking cute 😭😭

Just like rechecking the fridge incase done yummy food miraculously appeared in the last 5 minutes since you last looked
This is so spot on.
How many gallons? Any tankmates?
She’s in a 30g for now until she gets bigger / full sized. I want to do some kinda cool brackish scape with driftwood for her. and nope no tank mates. She is a demon and will kill everyone. 👹
I literally had one of these for ten years and got it in a 36gallon tank. Never grew past 3"
Are they all salt water and brackish or are there freshwater ones?
The Congo or Potato puffer is freshwater. Tater is one you'll see posted here and there, he's a potato puffer.
I never made the connection that Tater is a pufferfish. Super obvious now you say it since he’s basically an orange balloon but I guess I never imagined there would be pufferfish that burrow into the sand. Reddit hasn’t blessed my dash with Tater in a while, I hope they’re doing good

They literally kill everything in my experience. Little demon beans.

I must have gotten lucky. My GSP is in a full SW reef tank and has never gone after any tank mates or coral. He even leaves my trocus snails alone.
I want to eventually work her up the marine — it seems like it’d be less maintenance in the long term. But yes. I’ve learned puffers have their own “personalities” and some are evil blood hungry demons while others are pretty mild.
Haha get ready to spend a bunch of money on corals. When I transitioned him to coral. I didn't expect to dive so deeply into corals. I'm hooked now.
It’s part of the hobby. 😭😂
The only hurdle I had with brackish was learning not to up your salinity by more than 0.01-0.02 in a week span or the tank cycle can crash. Other than that the only other issue is brackish plants are real hard to come by.
This is true. I opted into silk plants and the goal is to convert her to full marine so I don’t have to freak out about the cycle health.
Mr.Fuckface ain’t any less fucky, huh?
Never. He was staring menacingly at me earlier because I had the gall to turn the light on.
figure 8s are indeed brackish as well. Amazon puffers look quite similar and will stay in freshwater their whole lives though. They are shoaling fish, so make sure to get 5+
My bad! Updated my post. So many puffers sometimes I get confused lmao
The pea puffer are freshwater as a remember correctly.
Freshwater to brackish!
I did not know that, thank you for the correction.
pea puffers cannot tolerate salt, she may be confused with figure 8s which are brackish
so much expression, like having a fish straight out of Nemo lol
YEP. a cartoon character.
Oooo, I dig the name
Thank you ❤️
Persephone is so cute. Reminds me of a minion
Cute little aggression balloon 😃
Yes :’) little murder bean
If she could talk, she would definitely sound like that drivers ed lady from SpongeBob.
MRS PUFF 😭
Stop she is so cute 😭
So cute!!! So much personality!!
Puffers are adorable!
They’re my favorite. Truly unlike any other fish I’ve ever owned.
OH MY GOD SHE IS SO CUTEEE!!
I really want a hungry potato friend
The cutest little murder machine you will ever see.
She’s my favorite. Don’t tell my other tanks ;)
[удалено]
Thank you 😭
Oh my gosh she is so cute!
Thank you :) she’s definitely become a favorite
But… Puffsephone / Persephopuff 😭 I’d buy a puffer if it wouldn’t eat half my shit.
Time for another tank ;)
I’d die for her
Me too 😭
She could star in her own a disney pixar. So cute and full of character. :3
What is she saying?
Yes! Puffers are so cute!! The lil eyeball stare into the depths of the shell felt so murdery and I love it. Pea puffers are my curret goal fish, getting my feet wet with some good ol gupps first.

I love my fish so much
Zaphod, my GSP, was basically a “puppy with fins”, and his favorite food was crayfish (which I also felt bad about so it was a rare treat for him) you could actually see him plan his attack strategy, which invariably meant his first strike was to declaw the crawfish, literally bite off the claws where they join the carapace then depending on his hunger level, he’d either take out the eyes, blinding the crawfish, or go right for the killing bite at the base of the rostrum (spike in front of the eyes) and then consume the crawfish at his leisure, always saving the claws for last (‘dessert’?)

Persephone trying to reach the snail for his extended snailtrail warranties
😭😭😭😂😂😂😂

Very cool pet. I’m looking to build a small indoor fishpond, and consider doing saltwater. Puffers are awesome!

Nightmare fuel from the perspective of the prospective snail.
Is Persephone a Spotted Congo puffer? I have a male SCP in my 30 gallon. They're the coolest fish
She’s a green spotted puffer! Love them.
Beautiful fish. I love when they pull their eyeballs around the front of their heads and focus on a snail. They're all such derps.
Me too!!! I love how they look around one eyeball at a time too. I could watch her all day.
Are all puffer fish this cute?
In my experience, yes.
this is gonna soud like a dumb question... but are puffer fish tropical or salt water ?? becasue i neeeeedssss one of thesesssss
Currently mine has 2 clown fish, a tang, and a bonded goby and pistol shrimp pair. Doesn't bother any of em. Never has.
Ugh that’s awesome. I’m hoping I can get a big ass tank and then get some clowns and start with that once she’s full marine. I might end up messaging you for tips when that day comes LOL
I'm always game to nerd out https://imgur.com/lOACmiM.jpg here's what mine looks like right now. Try and find him
Omg beautiful 🥹🥰 And is he that fatty on the far left!! Omg. So big and happy. See this is what I wanna show people when they say that GSPs don’t NEED to go marine. Literally look how happy and healthy yours is right now. So big and chunky. We want them to thrive, not survive 🙏
There’s freshwater — figure 8, pea puffers, potato and Congo puffers And then there’s brackish / salt. Percy here is a GSP and in brackish conditions now, with the plan to go full marine. :)
Omg theyre so cuteeeee dont you Just wanna grab em out and cuddle em
I WISH. 😭 literally a water puppy.
You think it’s all the murdering that keeps them looking so happy? Are they are as happy as they look? If so… Is it because of the killing and eating?
You know I haven’t thought about it. It’s probably the murder that makes them happy. Little psychopaths.
I had one for 6 months. but when I got a cat he ate him after 3 days. still don’t know how he got to him His name was Ricky
Oh no :( I’m sorry to hear that. my cat is an old man and he just enjoys watching the tanks lazily.
Thanks hope it never happens to you
👀
Awhh man, I would want to pet her so badly.
It’s so hard to resist the urge man
Awhh man, that’s why I won’t buy one. I know I’d do it one day.
What does the snail say?
These are the actions of a wise and diligent puffer!
So much personality!
Puffers have so much personality. Persephone is adorable and I would die for her. 😭
Oh my gosh. So cute!!
What kind off puffer is she??
One of my puffers bit me one time I had my hand in the water, I understand when you say they are murder beans
Can he kill you if you touch him?
LOL what kind of puffer is she? 🥺
Green spotted. :)
