And then do it again to whoever else he ends up with down the road. It's insane how people actively want to emotionally stunt their kids like this.

Every time I see one of these it reminds me to try even harder to NEVER be one of those moms. My oldest is a boy and I love him to pieces but I've always tried to balance out showing my affection with giving him loads of personal space. It's like a game with him to not tell me stuff just to be annoying, but he always tells me the really important stuff and I'm ok with that. I'm more worried about his future partner liking me than I am about trying to scare them off. I mean, if they do him wrong then yeah I'm not gonna be happy about it, but there's only so much you can do when they're grown. They gotta learn to fight their own battles.

My husband and I are very low contact with my MIL for this exact reason. She never liked me, and I dont think she ever will. Her living 8 hours away on an Island with no airport or decent internet helps.
I could never do that to my little boy. Ive always said regardless of who he choses as a partner I would welcome them with open arms. Id only become a problem if they hurt him, but then Id also be his problem if he did the same, holding them accountable for their actions. It shouldnt be that hard to do!

Because as a responsible parent, my duty as one doesnt stop when he leaves home and has his own partner. Obviously if he was to tell me "no" then Id respect his wishes, but if, hypothetically, he was to be toxic, or hit his partner, then I have a duty to others to hold him accountable. Ive seen too many people I care about be gaslit by their partners mothers whos "little boy would never hit a woman!"
There’s a difference between getting involved and siding with one partner over the other and punishing the wayward partner (which is how I read your initial comment) and calling someone out on their behaviour (which is how I read the second).
I am always deeply nervous of people putting themselves in the role of moral judge, jury and executioner over other adults (even their own children). I see now that isn’t what you meant.
