The actual pronunciation is [[put͡sɪn]](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Qc-Poutine.ogg)

GoddessXO-

yes that is correct. i just know (especially where i live) people don’t pronounce it correctly and wanted to see what other people say :)

sleepyboi08

This is how I would say it

emvs7

This is the way. Northern Ontario here 🙂 "Poo-tsin"

RubyRaven13

100%

TestingYou1

Québécois always gotta put a little gay twist on everything lol

Rustyray84

We’re fabulous like that

Individual-Theory-85

HAHAHAHA!!! It’s true!

SaladNeedsTossing

Puts-in but with a pretty soft 's'

Winstonoil

As an Anglo that lived in Quebec I would say that this is the closest that I would believe.

PapaStoner

Franco. It's as close as it gets.

tavvyjay

Doggo. Woof.

Icy_Reply_4163

I usually go with a hard ‘p’

nurvingiel

Yeah you do

Comedy86

A soft "p" never does the trick...

myworkreddit1234

lol at first I red this as “puts in butt”

subpar_cardiologist

Heh. I just spent 5 minutes trying to figure out any other way to put it. You nailed it tho.

yourpaljax

It’s like a closed high hat. 😂

jd705

Yup, but if you aren't at all French, you usually sound ridiculous saying it like that.

Strevolution

can I get a puts in

availabledawg

Grew up bilingual, so I'll code switch depending on who I'm talking to and what region I'm in. Same goes for a lot of québécois words and phrases

MediocreProfeshional

There's some pretty good fishin' up in Kwee-bec

augustabound

Who doesn't love fishin' in Kay-bec?

Drinkingdoc

Great fishin in Quebec!

GetOffMyBridgeQ

Yep. Code switch because some people get real heated about it for some reason and I never have the energy for that argument lol

greyswearer

Yeah I’m with you on this. If I’m speaking to Anglos I’ll say pootean. It’s just easier to speak the dialect.

Rrrelaxed

Coming from Yorkshire, I agree.

Odd-Road

Grew up in France, and learned English very late in my 20s. I do the same as you. :)

RaHarmakis

Pou-tin if it's good Authentic cheese fries and gravy. Pou-teen if it's got lots of other things added to it.

juanitowpg

Crap- if they just use cheese slices instead of curds

Senior_Ad1737

Cheese slices and cut up wieners

KinkyMillennial

What kind of vile heretic does that?!

juanitowpg

lol it happened. once

trudel69

Say it like [Ryan Gosling](https://youtu.be/qim6FpNBGOQ?t=29).

yoteshot

Came here to post exactly this

Rosuvastatine

Poutine.

Lost_Independence871

In Quebec, birthplace of this dish, it’s pou-tin. But I guess most would say pou-teen. Like most non French speakers would say capital of France is Paris, instead of pronouncing it Pa-ree.

[deleted]

Pu-tsin

FlacidRooster

I’m pretty sure saying it like poo-tin means whore.

S99B88

As an anglophone, I pronounce this very carefully, lest I mistakenly order a large sex worker and 2 bottles of water

Milch_und_Paprika

Incidentally, in France they write Vladimir Putin’s name the same way to avoid confusing him with Hooker Vlad, and scrolling down to the *In Politics* section of [Wikipedia’s page on poutine](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poutine#:~:text=In%20French%2C%20Russian%20president%20Vladimir,the%20two%20having%20identical%20pronunciation) has more information on him being confused with fries + cheese curds than we ever needed to know.

Temporary_Pie8723

Couldn’t find anything except that one reporter confused him with Jean Poutine.

Miss-Indie-Cisive

My dad did that once by accident. Then he did it a bunch more times after that cause he thought it was funny.

k3v1n

Can you write out what he says?

GuyLapin

Calice gang. You have to say "Poo-thin" No other way tabarnak.

MobysBanned

But that stuff makes my poo-thick y'know what I mean

Low_Interest_7553

Poutsinn

SeasonOfLogic

Where does the S come from?

Icy-Translator9124

That's a Québec francophone accent thing. Evolved from 16th century Breton. Nobody from France would say that, but it's a food from Québec. They don't pronounce équipe the same, either.

winkingfirefly

Because of [this feature](https://vitrinelinguistique.oqlf.gouv.qc.ca/24467/la-prononciation/phenomenes-phonetiques/laffrication) of québécois French. In short, when a [d] or a [t] is followed by an [i] or a [y], it will often be pronounced as [dz] or [tz].

Low_Interest_7553

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Qc-Poutine.ogg

PigeonObese

A feature of most American French varieties where T and D are affricated in front of the vowels i/y/u, so a S or Z sound appears. You'll also find similar pronunciations in some regional varieties of french in europe. Ex, ["tu" in Geneva, Switzerland](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:LL-Q150_\(fra\)-Nattes_%C3%A0_chat-tu.wav?uselang=fr)

Kindly-Orange8311

It’s similar to the lack of “H” in words that begin with one, or the addition of an “H” to words beginning with an “A”.

jcb1975

Poo-tsin

SavvySavitri

I'm in Toronto and everyone says Pou-teen.. however, proper pronouncation should be pou-tin

FlacidRooster

Pou-tin would mean whore my friend.

DeplorableKurt

I say poo-teen

Ok_Beyond_669

I do too, I feel more embarrassed trying to say it the correct way because I feel like I just sound so stupid

Im_upset_now

This is how I say it .. but after seeing how it's spelt I never want to pronounce it like this again

SaccharineDaydreams

I pronounce it that way when I'm talking to Albertans and the real way if I'm talking to anyone east of Kenora

[deleted]

Depends on if I'm talking to an anglophone or francophone

RoisinCorcra

Same.

SnowQueen795

Whatever it is, it’s definitely not « pou-teen »

cardew-vascular

Poo-tin.

PlayinK0I

Just don’t call it pou-tain. My work colleague tried to order poutine in Hull, Quebec and the young girl working laughed and said “you know you just ordered a whore? “

OinkiePig_

In Ontario as a kid, pou-tin. In Manitoba as a teen/adult, pou-teen. Seems backwards

occasionally_cortex

Hm, in Ontario I've always heard it pou-teen. Unless they were from Quebec, then it's pu-tsin

Uberduck333

I once heard an American tourist ask for a plate of putain to go. That was fun

ChooChoo9321

Sounds like a southerner, my type of people

tripwithmetoday

Putin

oli_clearwater

Bin là, d’la « poutine » tabarnack! Put-in

LaFlibuste

It's actually a French word so the correct pronounciation is pou-tin.

CptDawg

Yes

GoddessXO-

yes

TheVimesy

Don't want to overly dox myself, so I'll just say I live relatively close to a town that pronounces it differently from the entire rest of the planet, due to the historical isolation of their version of Michif: poo-chin. With a VERY hard ch.

GoddessXO-

like “pooch-in”?

TheVimesy

No, the emphasis is on the chin syllable. poo-CHIN Similarly, "the little fish" is rendered "Li pchi pwayson" in the language.

Conundrum1911

Instructions unclear. Accidentally ordered a Russian war criminal/dictator….

TEA-in-the-G

Pou-tin. It irks me sooo much when ppl say teen.

Guvnah-Wyze

Poo-tsin. Mums Quebecois though, so I would get beaten harshly if I didn't.

Knitaholic1519

😂😂😂

CheesyRomantic

Poo-tsin.

Human-Translator5666

Poo-teen in Alberta.

Knitaholic1519

It’s one « i », not two « e »’s, and in French the letter « i » is pronounced like the letter « e » in English.

occasionally_cortex

Accept in English-speaking Ontario we pronounce it pou-teen

Crossed_Cross

Look poo and tin. Except add an s in there to do t(s)in.

arar55

In English: poo-tin In French: poo-tsin

snarkisms

Pou-tsin

Particular_Ask_4540

Poo-tin or pootsin

aurorasarecool

That entirely depends on how fancy I'm feeling.

Leafsgirl11

Same as Celine……Celin

Your-diplomasgarbage

Tin

Useful-Rub1472

Tin

amazonallie

Pou-tin. I live in NB. So I pronounce it like the Acadians do

dArcor

I don't pronounce it in public

occasionally_cortex

This is the way 😂

smoking_in_wendys

Pou teen to piss off the québécois, pou tin to sound pretentious in front of anglos

Beneficial-Reason270

I am now craving a pou-teen! (Ontarian here)

Hold_Fast_To_Dreams

"Poots-in"

makitstop

so, as many have pointed out, the technecal correct way to pronounce it is "put-sin" but most of the purely english speakers i've met pronounce it "pou-teen" so, out of those options, that one is what i consider the "correct" way to say it

Evening_Monk_2689

Poo teen is English poo tin is French

eldiablonoche

Of the two suggestions: pou-tin. But there's an accent thing to it (not francophone myself I just love poutine) where it's more like pou-tsin (or put-sin, I guess?). Either way, it's Tin like the element, not Teen like a politician's preference. One of my biggest annoyances is that my most francophone friend pronounces it pouteen... 😭

mybalanceisoff

Pou teen

ChrisRiley_42

It depends. If you are in Alberta, probably "poo-teen". If you're in Quebec, "Pou Tsin"

augustabound

I'm in Ottawa and even the anglos here call it pou-tin. I usually say pou-teen though.

Reading360

Late but same in New Brunswick even the smallest of anglo hick towns with 100 people cann it pou-tin lol. That's just what it's called.

Weak_Career_1990

Say it with me Vladimir Pou..

HLef

It’s neither but poo-teen will be understood better anywhere outside of Quebec.

Madshibs

I put as much French-stank as I can on it and say it like I think a drunk Jean Chrétien would’ve said it. “Poo-TAHNG”

ASentientHam

Pow-tiny

JasonChristItsJesusB

Putin.

Calm-Day4128

If you're north east of north bay, and you order a pouteen and they correct you. As poutin. You're in the right place

buddachickentml

Poutine > Putin

[deleted]

Pu-tsen

cakebytheoceans11

Poots-in

Hmajscule

Poo-t's-in

Lovingly-Judging

I say poo-teen, because I live in the West, but if you actually asked me to say it, I’d say it the proper way, because my family is Québécois.

Chiasnake

Pou-teen... just to spite Quebeccers

bigbeats420

If you're an Anglo, and pronounce it with an accent, I immediately follow it by asking you how you pronounce the capital of France. Just say pou-teen.

Guvnah-Wyze

See, I speak plenty French, but still pronounce Paris the Anglo way. Give me a Spanish place to name, and I'll say it the Spanish way. Never really thought of that til right now.

_rt-2

pou-tsin = french; poo-teen = english;

Violetthug

Pou teen

Ancient-Blueberry384

Poo-teen

StretchArmstrong99

POO-TEEN Or if I'm feeling stuck up PU-TSIN

CommunicationRich200

Definitly pou-teen.

Spsurgeon

Was just travelling in Quebec and had some excellent poutine. Crispy fries with a relatively small amount of gravy (like a milder version of Swiss Chalet dipping sauce), then cold fresh cheese curds added last. Best thing ever.

Grizz807

Yes

Strangle1441

Depends if you’re English or French

UndecidedWolf

Putaing chuis bieng, qu'est ce que chuis bieng

iiplatypusiz

If you are a Newfie you say it pooteeen (extra e on the teen to really sell it. "me and da bys are goin up fer a feed a pooteeen" and then we proceed to add dressing on top of it too because we are heathens and probably because some fella from Quebec wouldn't like that one bit so that just sits right with me.

ThrowsiesAway4Life

I used to prounounce it "pou-teen" until I met my French friend. Now I'm having an identity crisis and alternate between "pou-tin" and "pou-teen"

wackyvorlon

Pou-tin. I think the most accurate pronunciation is more like poo-ten, but the n isn’t there much.

Jazzlike-Reindeer-44

It is. Congratulations.

SeasonOfLogic

Pou-teen. Manitoba.

dancingalot

Probably depends on what part of Canada you’re in. In Western Canada, we say poo-teen.

MrSloane

When you're ordering pulled pork BBQ bacon ranch, it's poo teen

UnluckyCharacter9906

Abooteen

Broely92

Poo-teen. Poo-tin people are annoying tryhards

EmeraldEntrails1

It's always been pou-teen for me

El_Sabroso_

You say: “simplyAndBoring”

roccerfeller

Depends if you’re French and saying it correctly or English and saying it anglicized

Jaded-Software-4258

I came to Canada around 2019 and tried this amazing food. Around 2022, when the war started I wad scared to say "Putin" when ordering 😂😂 basically didn't want myself judged so, I used to show the menu item in the display board and pretend to spell 😂

bambiealberta

Depends on who I’m talking to.

Praetorian709

Po-u-tine

Salty_Association684

Poutin

MushroomBright8626

I’m from the west coast and I say “pouteen” and have only ever heard “poutin” a handful of times, even though I believe the latter pronunciation is the correct one. I’m a product of my environment I suppose:)

Simple_Passage7759

It really doesn’t matter. Anywhere you go, you’re offending Someone!! Same with the pronunciation of gyro. So it doesn’t matter. We know what you mean.

Clever1guy

Poo-teen

HonestDriver1000

I'm in SK and have only heard people pronounce it "poo-teen"

MaritimeMartian

I’m from Atlantic Canada and am not French in any way whatsoever. I say pou*teen*. So does everyone else I know from here.

juanitowpg

I always say the latter but my parents in law, who grew up in rural (french) Manitoba would say it differently. Like the former but with a very short "i"

Logicalpolice

Pou-tin

No_Rope_897

I thought it was pow-tyn.

StuffSuch4830

Mostly everywhere else other than Quebec say pouteen. It's even in commercials.

sunny-days-bs229

Pouteen

BigFatChewie

I'm an Ontarian that would visit Cape Breton everynow and then. They all pronounced it Poo-teen and it drove me insane.

kevloid

poo-teen. poo-tin is the asshole running russia.

Remarkable-Desk-66

At the start of the Ukraine war there were some protesters that were probably not English speaking holding a sign. The sign said stop poutine and makes me laugh to this day. Sorry about the war laugh but when it hits it hits. My coworkers and I thought it was so funny that we all changed our work passwords to stop poutine.

MJSP88

Poutz or pou-ti-ne

CordialSasquatch

Poo-teen is delicious French fries with gravy and cheese curds. Poo-tin is the Russian president. /s

[deleted]

Poo-teen

SHAHJIIFOLYF

I'm in saskatchewan, and everyone here calls it pou-teen.

Bandidomal_

Putin

Fantastic_Plantain93

On the west coast, the correct pronunciation is pou-teen.

jokeswagon

Real Québécois say it like “poutsen” but the S and the N are half throttle.

Impressive_Ice3817

I'm in NB, and the francophones I know all say poo-TIN. So, that's how I say it. I used to say poo-TEEN, and they all teased me about how painfully anglo I was. This is true for both the Acadians in sw NB, and the French-but-not-Acadians from Grand Falls. And whatever my friends from up near Bathurst consider themselves.

kuddly_kallico

Pou-teen unfortunately. I know it's wrong, but it's been so long saying it that way. I can't stop.

SaskatchewanFuckinEh

Poo-teen

Deekers

I pronounce it the proper way.

vallily

Pou-teen

Late-Pin-3361

Pou-tin-anny

Sardanox

Grew up in Ontario always said pou-teen, moved to new Brunswick a couple years ago and everyone says pou-tin. I still say pou-teen.

[deleted]

fries with gravy and cheese*

Hannibal_Barca_

As a French Canadian I have been corrected a number of times regarding my pronunciation by English only speaking Canadians who seemed convinced it was "pou-teen" lol.

Montreal_Ballsdeep

Poo-teen.

Mountain_Cold_6343

This really shouldn’t be this hard ???

Naando_boi

Pou-tin is the jackass causing chaos in Ukraine

bobbyboogie69

Depends on where I am. In Ontario it’s typically pou-teen, but when in Quebec it varies, but typically is pronounced pou-tin. Just listen to the locals.

DystopianNPC

Yes

Fun_Pick_9471

Poo Teen

soda224

I switch it up every time I say it

Gotrek5

Poo t in

RebK1987

In Alberta we say Poo-teen, but my French friends say Poo-tin.

WendyPortledge

Grew up in NB. I always say pou-tin. Just never say it with an -ain…

-AverageCanadianEh-

poo-teen

glubag

Depends what part of canada you're in.  Generally both are fine.

Hopeful__Historian

“Pou-tin” but with the schwa (e) sound at the end

iswirl

The latter.

Unusual-Conflict-762

Pou-teen
