This song is why I looked up 'burling' in the websters 45 years ago. (also where Burlington's name came from)
And I still throw that out once in a while to look like a smart ass.
Like right now. Lol.
We've left Canada for now, but...
I volunteered at my child's grade one class and taught them music 3 times a week - Canadian folk songs and stuff. They honestly would never hear the things I taught them otherwise!
Anyway, on the second last day, I played this one for them and they were amazed by what they saw and found the animation so interesting and the music they were singing along to by the end ❤️
I love it but my husband is still sick of it after 30 years. He got to watch it twice a week all through high school as it preceded every NFB film ever played in the classroom.
One day last summer, I was in the pharmacy getting my prescription (im in Sask). The guy next to me was getting his, too. I overheard him say his last name was Milgaard. So I said to him. Jeez, that's a famous name in these parts.
He said, "yeah....He was my brother."
I asked the fella if his brother had any peace over the last bunch of years of his life, and he kind of shrugged non committally.
Sad, eh. Wheat Kings always meant a lot to me. And now that I ran into David Milgaard's brother, it'll mean more.
I used to work in a certain dinner theatre in the prairies and was shocked to see HIS name on the guest list for the night. Had to Google image search to make sure and then left him the F alone for the night.
I came here to say Wheat Kings. But really anything off Fully Completely. I remember hearing a theory that there was a song for every province on that album.
Locked in the trunk of a car is about the FLQ crisis and the Pierre Laporte kidnapping and murder in the 70's in Quebec.
There's so much great Canadiana in that album.

Saskatchewan — Les Trois Accords
A tale of not only getting dumped for another guy but also being disrespected by one’s own cows.🐄.
A daily occurrence in this country.
Nowhere with You by Joel Plaskett: "I took the Dartmouth ferry into the town, spent my pennies bummin' around, didn't see a single face that I knew, can I go nowhere with you?"
This song has one of the best hooks I have ever heard.
My partner and I sing it with a guitar all folk-like and people are just stunned by the lyrics. I just love singing “The crowded riders' restlessness enunciates”
Clarify the question.... are you asking about Canadian songs about canada, because we kinda expect that from our artists, and then you're just asking about favourite songs? Or are you asking about international artists who throw in Canada references? That's what makes us feel special 😊

"Big Joe Mufferaw" by Stompin' Tom Connors, because it's so specific to the Ottawa Valley.
Hey-Hi, hey-hi-ho, the best man in Ottawa was Mufferaw Joe
Mufferaw Joe
Big Joe Mufferaw paddled into Mattawa
All the way from Ottawa in just one day, hey-hey
On the river Ottawa, the best man we ever saw
Was Big Joe Mufferaw the old folks say
Come and listen and I'll tell you what the old folks say
And they say Big Joe had an old pet frog
Bigger than a horse and he barked like a dog
And the only thing quicker than a train upon a track
Was Big Joe riding on the bull-frog's back
Hey-Hi, Hey-Hi-Ho, the best man in Ottawa was Mufferaw Joe
Mufferaw Joe
Yeah, they say Big Joe used to get real wet
From cutting down timber and working up a sweat
And everyone will tell you around Carlton Place
The Mississipi dripped off of Big Joe's face
Hey-Hi, Hey-Hi-Ho, the best man in Ottawa was Mufferaw Joe
Mufferaw Joe
Now Joe had the portage from the Gatineau down
To see a little girl he had in Kempville town
He was back and forth so many times to see that gal
The path he wore became the Rideau Canal
Hey-Hi, Hey-Hi-Ho, the best man in Ottawa was Mufferaw Joe
Mufferaw Joe
Big Joe Mufferaw paddled into Mattawa
All the way from Ottawa in just one day, hey-hey
On the river Ottawa the best man we ever saw
Was Big Joe Mufferaw the old folks say
Come and listen and I'll tell you what the old folks say
And they say Big Joe put out a forest fire,
Halfway between Renfrew and old Arnprior
He was fifty miles away down around Smith Falls,
But he drowneded out the fire with five spit balls
Hey-Hi, Hey-Hi-Ho, the best man in Ottawa was Mufferaw Joe
Mufferaw Joe
Well he jumped into the Calabogie Lake real fast
And he swam both ways to catch a cross-eyed-bass
But he threw it on the ground and said "I can't eat that!"
So he covered it over with Mount Saint Patt
Hey-Hi, Hey-Hi-Ho, the best man in Ottawa was Mufferaw Joe
Mufferaw Joe
And they say Big Joe drank a bucket of gin
And he beat the living tar of the twenty nine men
And high on the ceiling of the Pembroke Pub
There is twenty-nine boot marks and they are signed with love
Hey-Hi, Hey-Hi-Ho, the best man in Ottawa was Mufferaw Joe
Mufferaw Joe
Big Joe Mufferaw paddled into Mattawa
All the way from Ottawa in just one day, hey-hey
On the river Ottawa the best man we ever saw
Was Big Joe Mufferaw the old folks say
Come and listen and I'll tell you what the old folks say
They say Hey-Hi, Hey-Hi-Ho, the best man in Ottawa was Mufferaw Joe
Mufferaw Joe
Big Joe Mufferaw
Big Joe Mufferaw
Big Joe Mufferaw
Big Joe Mufferaw
Big Joe Mufferaw
Big Joe Mufferaw
Big Joe Mufferaw
Big Joe Mufferaw
Big Joe Mufferaw

Angst on the planks in Kingston
Straight out of KCVI
And old Luther Guitar Johnson

Up and down at the old Prince George
Smoking dope from a corn cob pipe
Big Lake by Junkhouse.
This album was released around the time that I had first left my birthplace and home home, Hamilton, Ontario. After a year of school in Sault Ste. Marie, I found myself fighting forest fires in Red Lake Ontario. Alone and homesick. I heard this song, and without realizing the band was from Hamilton, (or for that matter, even Canadian) I began to eventually recognize that the references were Hamilton. (Roll down the Skyway, shores of the big Lake; Steeltown, smoke stacks). As such, it became an antidote to my homesickness, and I listened to it often.
In the song Bleed a Little While Tonight by Lowest of the Low there’s the line “you nearly kissed me blind on Bathurst Street it’s true” and my now wife and I used to live on Bathurst so it kinda stuck with me.
That’s not even the most Toronto song by the Low! Reference an entire song about The Only Cafe, plus a shout out to the same joint in “Under the Carlaw Bridge.”
As an Eastender, that entire record feels right. Too bad they all moved west.

I like Gordon Lightfoot's version of Farewell to Nova Scotia, and of course his Canadian Railroad Trilogy is a classic.
And since it's almost July 1st I'll add in Stompin' Tom's It's Canada Day Up Canada Way
Blue Rodeo - Hasn't Hit Me Yet
Hey, hey, I guess it hasn't hit me yet
I fell through this crack and kinda lost my head
I stand before this streetlight
Watching the snow fall in this cold December night
And out in the middle of Lake Ontario
Canadian references? Or just Canadian songs? I'm not sure where the line is, but I'm going to assume you mean the latter.
I mean there are a lot of really amazing timeless songs like
- The Last Saskatchewan Pirate
- Barrett's Privateers
- Good Ol' Hockey Game
- (I'm sorry but I have to mention The Toronto Song)
- Northwest Passage
- One Great City
But my favourite? That's a really, really tough thing to decide.
But
It's Bud the Spud
From the bright red mud
Rollin' down the highway smilin'
Oh Canada by Hugh Oliver
Prarie town by Randy Bachman
Vancouver by the Rheostatics
Saskatchewan """ ""
Me and Stupid
So much by them
The rest of my life by Sloan
One great city by the Weakerthens
ALBERTA by the Indigo Girls
Running back to Saskatoon by the Guess Who
Frank Ab by the Rural Alberta Advantage
Oh Canada by Nadia Reid (an aussi who has never been here)
Yes I have a full Canada play list on Spotify.
So I have lots more.
The song DVP by pup. Only because of a particular line on the song. "I'm driving fast to get away, doing 180 down the dawn valley parkway.". Anyone who knows the DVP knows you're not doing 180 any time of day due to traffic.
Pup is a Canadian band and many of their songs have references to places in Canada, but particularly Ontario.
"The Wild Goose", written by Wade Hemsworth and sung by Kate and Anne McGarrigle (backing vocals by Mr Hemsworth as well, I think). It mentions the Pukaskwa River, which is in Northern Ontario.
Edit: Hemsworth also wrote "The Log Driver's Waltz".
The Log Drivers Waltz

This is the best comment
What Canadian references does this have ?
It doesn't have a Canadian reference but it was created for Canada Vignettes and only Canadians of a certain age know about it.
I understand
I love it but my husband is still sick of it after 30 years. He got to watch it twice a week all through high school as it preceded every NFB film ever played in the classroom.
I’m with your husband. Actually didn’t really like it as a kid either 😂
Hasn't Hit Me Yet, blue rodeo.
Bad Timing - Blue Rodeo
Northwest Passage
I prefer "Barrett's Privateers" myself but really a lot of Stan Rogers songs could make the cut.
