The damaged cv axle in the image you posted. commonly make the most noise when doing very sharp turns in either direction. However if it a grinding noise while slowly moving in either direction i would guess the brake pads as a starting point. its not uncommon for brake pads to wear unevenly or different from the opposite side . If you rims allow see if you can view how much brake pad you have left (outer pad), there is a chance the other pad of the pair could be done already(inner brake pad)

I would replace the axle. It is leaking at the rubber boot.

Jack it up by the lower control arm shake it down see if there is play in anything pull the tire Inspect pads rotors same for both sides but for sure that cv needs help she’s tore up and probs full of road junk and sand

Check the axle nut torque it could be loose. Also replace the axle since the boot is leaking

I’m curious to know what the issue is. I have an 01 Corolla that shakes mildly during gentle left turns but not right ones and not if I’m braking.

Yours is most likely a ball joint, second likely is a tie-rod end, third is wheel bearing. Could also be cv joint or a strut, I guess Jack the front wheels off the ground one at a time. When each wheel is off the ground, grab the tire at top and bottom and see if there’s any play - if it bumps back and forth. Then do the same from side to side. Top and bottom only is ball joint, side-to-side is tie-rod, both is wheel bearing

A strut could do that? A couple months ago I checked the tie rods and ball joints with my uncle who has a lift in his garage. They were good, but my front passenger side strut is definitely bad. Right now I’m only driving the thing until I can get my Charger running again but at this point I’m tempted to just replace the entire front end and keep driving it instead of selling it.

nudistinclothes

If it isn’t the rods, balls or bearings then I’d do the struts - especially if you know one is bad. I’d probably do the whole front end like you mentioned… 23 years old might be due a refresh

Any suggestion on a good brand to look for that’s cheap? I’ve priced it and I can get pretty much everything except the CV axle up front for ~$300. I know parts for that car are cheap but it seems almost too cheap to be decent quality.

Idk, I normally go to rockauto and get something in the middle

The damaged rubber boots are covering the constant velocity joints (also called CV joints) as they keep the grease around the joints from becoming contaminated and causing the CJs to fail, unless the boot fails and is not repaired very shortly there after. The assembly on each side is called a half shaft or an axle. You can buy half shafts which include the CJ joints with new grease and boots for around $150 each or so. They might be OEM rebuilt or new chicom. They might want the old ones as a core if the ones you buy are rebuilt. Indeed, the ones pictured need to be replaced. They may well be the source of all or a part of the noise and behavior described.

Replace your cv axles problem solved

Cvs usually make a snapping sound. You do need a boot on that joint but the noise youre describing sounds like brakes.

Golthobert

First image, inner cv boot split, second image outer cv boot split. Cheapest is to replace just the rubbers, best to replace both half shafts complete

It will either be your brakes or you cv, with the grinding noise, Have you visually inspected your brakes and pads, the cv boot, have it jacked up out of gear and turn the drive shafts, is there any unpleasant clicks or vibrations

What do your brakes look like?
