Final Fantasy 14. Every expansion has absolute bangers of many different genres. My current go-to for showing people the range without spoilers are "Tomorrow and Tomorrow", "The Nautilus Knoweth", and "A Long Fall". Xenoblade Chronicles 1, X, 2, 3, DLCs....music is phenomenal. They'll have you grooving, crying, and raging depending on what you land on.
Darren Korb does the music for Supergiant Games, the makers of Bastion, Pyre, Transistor, and Hades. All of those soundtracks go way harder than they have any right to
Red dead redemption 1

Stray (the cat game) incredible soundtrack.
If youāre looking for retro stuff, Super Contra is really good too.
I actually have tons of favorites. Here's a few of them: Undertale, Undertale Yellow, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon (All the games), Final Fantasy (Specfically 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, and Dimensions), and Legend of Spyro.
Frostpunk

I recently made a massive Spotify playlist that juxtaposes these two soundtracks and lots of complementary music from nearby genres. Halo is GOATed. Shit is literally fucking amazing. Not only amazing music for a game, but just incredible in general. Marty OāDonnel is legit the GOAT
I don't think any games have consistent enough sound tracks for me to consider any tracks my favourites. However, if there's one section of a game that has music that is entirely my style, it would be most of the music in Xen portion of Black Mesa, as well as the music that plays during the end of the Blast Pit chapter when you're killing the Tentacle creature. Most of the songs that play in the Xen portion of the game (in my opinion) perfectly capture that otherworldly ethereal feel.
Now, let me explain why I like the Blast Pit one. When Gordon finally gets back to the pit after arming the weapon used to kill it, music starts playing. It's slow, and somber. As if the game is trying to evoke emotions of uncertainty. Like, despite all that he's been through so far, Gordon wonders momentarily if he can even survive this final ascent back up to the control room with these massive goddamn tentacles trying to kill him every step of the way.
Then, the music ramps up into something much more energetic, and almost entirely removes the somber tone from the music...ALMOST entirely. It now sounds like the music is evoking the emotion of resolve. He's made it this far, and he'll be DAMNED if he lets this monster kill him. So he thinks "to hell with sneaking" and bolts, going from platform to ladder again and again, going as fast as he can until he makes it to the control room. He hits the button and the beast is slain! Cue the victory music!
But the victory music never comes, does it? After Gordon presses the switch, the music slows down again, devolving back into that somber tone from the first part as he sees the massive flame kill the creature in a spectacular display of power. As it withers and burns away, it dawns on you. The somber part of the music from the start. It was trying to evoke uncertainty, but not for the reason you initially thought.
As the music comes to a close and Gordon sees the hole where the creature once emerged from, he enters a short, momentary state of quiet reflection and he can't help but wonder if what he did was right. But of course what he did is right! Right? It was killing the security guards and scientists. But, it was an animal. It didn't possess higher thinking capabilities. The most likely theory is that it was acting out of fear. It was trying to survive....It was scared.
Gordon then snaps out of his reflection and realizes that, whatever the case may be, the current situation is bigger than any one of them, human, animal, alien, whatever, and he realizes he did exactly what he needed to do.
He then peers down the hole and descends.
Press onward, Dr. Freeman, you've a job to do.

Am I a dumbass who almost never understands what the specific vibe music is going for if it has nuance? Absolutely.
Am I totally missing the point of the entire point of that music. Most likely.
Am I completely overthinking that whole scene in general and the feel the developers were going for? Almost certainly.
But I feel that since music is such a subjective thing in terms of how it makes people feel, that it was okay for me to share my specific experiences with that music and scene.
Thanks for reading my way-too-long, probably wrong comment.

Megaman X, Zero and Battlenetwork series Chrono Trigger (& Cross) Radiant Historia (anything made by Yoko Shimomura really) Castlevania (specially Dawn of Sorrow) Shinning Force (the first one and specially that circus theme) Final Fantasy X (look for To Zanarkand and Seymour's battle theme)
I still maintain that Chrono Trigger has the best soundtrack ever put in a game. Honorable mentions for most any Final Fantasy.
