*A Single Man* is probably the most underrated gay film of all time. Not enough people, specifically gay men, have seen it. *Call Me By Your Name* has a special place for the hubs and I, because it was the first "gay" film we saw in the theatre together. *Boy Erased* also has a special place for me as the main character's struggles and family dynamic so closely mirror my history. Special Mention: *The Last of Us episode 3 (Bill and Frank)*. Yeah, its a show, but the episode was practically a short film about 2 gay men in the apocalypse.

fallmelon

A single man is so sad, I love the movie, but cant help to feel deeply sad when I watch it. I loved the book also.

traditional_amnesia1

That’s the only episode that I remember and I frequently rewatch it. Cry every time. So perfect

jennachrisp

Tom Ford did a fantastic job adapting A Single Man. Great film. I sure as hell cried a lot. Angry cry. Happy cry. Sad cry. Def recommend. Loved it so much I bought it on dvd. Recommend reading the book, also! Call Me By Your Name - what a beautiful and true movie. So beautifully told. The book is ok, I prefer the film tbh. Cannot recommend bill and Frank episode from The last of us enough. After I watched it, I seriously thought “was that only one episode??!” A true love story. In fact, I’m going to go watch it again. LOVE

tennisdude2020

I am going to get minus points for this but Call Me By Your Name was horrible. No other actor but Hammer was horrible for that role. He didn't fit the part. They weren't compatible. Timothy C was great and the scene with his dad on the love sofa at the end was amazing. Hammer ruined it for me.

Gemini_cub

To Wong Foo for comedy and camp. Normal Heart for historical purpose. Boys in the Band for drama. Holding the Man when I need a cry. eCupid for cheesy romance.

sultanamana

I read the book of Holding the Man and I cried for like a week after the ending. Horrible experience 10/10 recommended

CanadianTimeWaster

I can't belive I forgot about To Wong Foo!!!

PrettySneaky71

God's Own Country

No-Razzmatazz-6488

Such a great film

blah191

This is a favorite of mine as well. Damnnnnn

[deleted]

Excellent film! I had just watched him as Prince Charles in The Crown and was dazzled by his acting range.

jb108822

‘Love, Simon’ will always be a favourite of mine. It’s the only film I’ve ever watched where, on finishing it for the first time, I’ve wanted to watch it again immediately. The only thing that stopped me was because I needed to go to work!

tennisdude2020

I watched it on a plane and didn't want to land too quickly!!

coolamericano

I did too! It made me enjoy the flight.

Comprehensive_Ear586

That whole thing felt like it was written by straight people trying to appeal to gay people

CanadianTimeWaster

the bird cage.

tennisdude2020

Everyone was GREAT in that movie especially Gene Hackman. He's fantastic in everything he did.

eamonnbowers

Beautiful Thing

UnlikelyReliquary

i love this one

AlwaysSunnyDragRace

Brokeback Mountain

Aumius

This. I saw this movie about four times when it was in theaters. I was so mad that it didn’t win best picture that year at the Oscars.

theshicksinator

Everyone was mad. Fucking Crash won instead.

Speckster1970

I was so pissed I wrote a rant about it and Roger Ebert posted it. (I was younger so I read it with a little cringe now). https://www.rogerebert.com/roger-ebert/for-people-who-dont-want-to-think

Aumius

Yup. That movie wasn’t even that good either.

theshicksinator

And it's aged like absolute milk.

johnmichael-kane

So many articles about how homophobia was to blame for this

ToughCredit7

It’s always a classic. Very sad too

[deleted]

I cry at movies regularly, so I brought a fresh pack of tissues to the theater for Brokeback Mountain but never needed to open them. Instead, I bristled at the end because it totally went with the tired trope of gays end up dead or alone. I attribute the facile ending to a straight director making a movie with no queer actors based a short story by a straight woman. Truly a disappointment.

Alastair367

I'm honestly shocked "But I'm a Cheerleader" isn't already somewhere in the comments. I mean yeah it's sapphic but it's amazing. Also "Pricilla Queen of the Desert", "Too Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar", "The Birdcage", and "Girls Will Be Girls".

Weary-Somewhere5055

All of us strangers

[deleted]

I bawled at the theater , but All of Us Strangers is the first movie that ever made me cry the day after seeing it. Profoundly touching and beautiful.

UnlikelyReliquary

the bird cage (1996), beautiful thing (1996), shelter (2007), and pride (2014) (Shelter is kind of cheesy but I have watched it so many times)

jacksdad123

Shelter is at the top of my list, possibly my favorite depending on my mood.

UnlikelyReliquary

the first time i saw it i ended up watching it on repeat all weekend lol

wordsandstuff44

Shelter is one of if not the first gay movie I watched. It’s been so long I don’t know if it’d hold up, but it’s one of my favorites for nostalgia alone. It made me very happy in high school

rickinmontreal

Pride is a great movie and for once, not sad

tennisdude2020

Shelter - me too. And you can see the mic in the one scene.

al_cohen

Weekend, 2011 Also really enjoyed all of us strangers

nosleeptilfirstdraft

Weekend is the best bloody movie ever made imho.

al_cohen

YES.

sweetNbi

Probably gets my vote too. Such a brilliant film. Andrew is just such a great director. Big fan.

MTblasphemy

Add Priscilla to the mix and I'm yours.

Cute-Character-795

I just watched *In From the Side* and I have to admit that I rather like that movie. I like *Latter Days*, *Firebird*, *the Perfect Wedding*

shadowslh

Trick

New_Teacher_4361

Not a film, but a series. It’s a Sin. I cried so much.

sweetNbi

I wasn't ready for how good that series was for real!

New_Teacher_4361

Same. Really stayed with me.

Diessel_S

I got a few: Bros 2022 Love Simon 2018 Primos 2019 Beautiful thing 1996 The way he looks 2014 The thing about Harry 2020 Another Gay Movie (love it for the comedy alone) Dashing in December 2020 Potato dreams of America 2021 That's a bit more than a few haha but my gay movies list on imdb has 540 titles so picking 9 isn't that easy XD

junkmail0178

I was in college when Beautiful Thing came out and it was a touchstone moment in my life.

Kevz417

I was their age when I came across it!!

junkmail0178

Me too just about, college freshman… so the crushes weren’t weird.

jgh169

Another gay movie was so raunchy, I loved it. I still can’t believe that Muffler is now Mrs. Fish on The Gilded Age !

tennisdude2020

Love the Thing About Harry!!

BoxFullOfFoxes

Both European films, but North Sea Texas and Summer Storm are pretty good coming of age type films.

blah191

I loved both of these! I was looking for a mention of North Sea Texas!!! “Jongens” or “ Boys” is very good too!

BurnAfterReading171

I also enjoyed "Close" and "Summer of 85" as foreign films. A few others that o can't think of.

greyeminence2

Maurice.

rickinmontreal

One of my top movies

KingKaos420-

Bloodsucker_

The Little Mermaid. Yes, I read the question correctly.

blah191

lol hell yeah! I will show may age by saying I burnt up so, so many copies of TLM in my parents VCR. I went through some VCRs too when I learned how to go frame by frame lol

bsffrn97

Not explicitly gay, but a lot of gay subtext: Dead Poets Society. I cry like a baby every time I watch that damn movie.

HieronymusGoa

ufff....i like: pride, moonlight, trick and many others. i dont rly have one od say is the best i think. i even liked not another gay movie and the eating out series. i hated bros

Lazy-Lawfulness1487

Latter Days. This movie is important to me because it's one of the first gay films I saw that had a happy ending.

geowatt

Party Monster

skotbeau

Am I old or out of touch but why has no one mentioned Torch Song Trilogy such a beautiful movie I cry ever day I watch it I am soon to be 57

jakub_02150

the very best

tennisdude2020

Can't find it streaming anywhere!!

TheMattinatorD

A lot of gay movies really aren't very good. But I did really like Love Simon.

blah191

There are some ones definitely worth checking out in the comments you should check out some of the European ones. Those are some of the better ones I started finding. I definitely had to do some research to start finding gay themed films I liked. ☺️

sweetNbi

Oh but there are a lot if amazing films. Been watching at least one a day (short films or full features) for 2 or 3 years now and honestly there are tons. But you must be willing to watch films made in other countries and read subtitles if you don't understand that language.

Colorado87

All Of Us Strangers

tennisdude2020

I am not sure I have a favorite. Torch Song Trilogy comes to mind. Aristotle and Dante Discover the Meaning of the Universe is good. Good book too.

Rickemrobo91

A lot of the popular ones have already been said but I recently saw “Down Low” on Netflix and I really enjoyed it. Funny, weird, and surprisingly heartfelt.

CumInMeBro88

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe

YesAmAThrowaway

Rocketman

Dorianscale

“The way he looks”/“Eu nao quero voltar sozinho” is super cute

sweetNbi

Loved that one. So happy they made a full film out of that adorable film, especially when happy endings and disability representation in queer films were a rarity.

Billyconnor79

Y Tu Mama Tambien Maurice Wild Reeds Come Undone

Flash-Over

Female Trouble (1974) Not a gay movie in the “traditional” sense, but it’s a classic example of gay camp “I worry that you'll work in an office, have children, celebrate wedding anniversaries. The world of the heterosexual is a sick and boring life.”

ArtistChef

Wedding Banquet

VeitPogner

Comedy: Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Bird Cage Drama/Romance: Weekend

ToughCredit7

I’m actually a fan of a few: Brokeback Mountain Edge of Seventeen Fair Haven Prayers for Bobby The Truth About Jane Boy Erased

tennisdude2020

Fair Haven bothered me because the dude was so stressed about dating girls. Brought back memories. But the ending was great.

ToughCredit7

Omg same!! I was like that all throughout my pre-teen/early teen years. It hit home when I watched the movie.

Sea_Payment_2585

Fellow travelers for sure. It's a show, not a movie. But super good!

sweetNbi

The way it caught and kept my undivided attention 😭 i can't believe they were robbed of the prizes they deserved 🥺

L'Inconnu Du Lac

jacobfreemaan

Beach Rats

sweetNbi

Yes! Was recently tortured by that Gucci gig he did because I couldn't place his face and those posters were following me everywhere. Eventually googled it and was reminded of that film and also the short appearance he made in Matthias & Maxime. While I loved the film, wasn't too impressed with him there. His lips looked so appetising tho nonetheless hehe. Mind you it could be Dolan's stylistic choices.

susitucker

Priscilla, Freier Fall, Maurice

rimtusaw243

Shelter is probably the top for me. I also really love the cheesy rom coms - top being The Perfect Wedding (2012) and The Christmas Setup (2020)

The way Normal Heart stole my heart. That's when my respect for Matt just went 📈📈📈. He is such a great actor on top of being devastatingly hot.

minigmgoit

Cachorro for me.

Ok_Marzipan1771

Adam and Steve 2005.

afsr11

Some of my favorites have been mentioned before in here, but anyway, here are some, not in any specific order: * Nimona * God's Own Country * Love, Simon * Uncle Frank * Beautiful Thing * Tu me Manques * Badhaai Do * Straight-Jacket * His * All of Us Strangers

vieniaida

The 1970 film "The Boys in the Band."

Then_Light569

The most unserious, pleasure watch. Bear City. I related a lot as a young 21 year old to the main character Tyler and his sexual attraction to old gay bears. I could never relate to men my own age because I always wanted men in there 50s and 60s. And the fatter the better. Rodger was a muscle silver fox, but it was known Tyler was into the santa type. I get the movie needed a hot older skinny bear to be the lead, but there was a part of me that felt heard. The first movie was great. The second meh. The third was terrible but in such a good way. The fact his interest was an old hairy chub bear was very validating. As dumb as it sounds I saw myself in his character.

looney1023

Honorable mention to Little Miss Sunshine. It's not a gay movie per say, but Steve Carell's character was one of the first "real" gay characters I had ever seen when I first watched it.

spacepup84

Weekend All Of Us Strangers Paris 05:59: Theo & Hugo (2016) Bros Priscila, Queen of the Desert Closet Monster A Single Man Knife + Heart The Power of the Dog

sweetNbi

Glad someone mentioned Theo & Hugo. Why can't we have more films with such explicit sex scenes but aren't porn. Like I want porn too but also a good story/class A films plus the explicit stuff. But now with purity culture taking over with the kids, not holding my breath 😔 although TBF the Latin Americans are making great films these days without the hangups that ruin a lot of the films coming out of the US & co.

cmyk-me

Love Simon

InevitableHedgehog38

The Wedding Banquet Beautiful Thing Sordid Lives is a hoot.

LetsCheerToThis

I’ve always loved the film Get Real.

NSMike

I feel like it's a little bit of a cop-out, and of course it hasn't aged well with the Armie Hammer scandals that have followed, but *Call Me By Your Name* isn't just a good film, it remains one of the prettiest films I think I've ever seen. I would watch it just to enjoy the visuals of the Italian summer.

I would say 'Maurice' is my favourite, cause the characters romance is more realistic than modern movies

Holding the man, a real tear jerker

Isopax1

Haven’t seen My Policeman mentioned. Am I the only one who liked seeing Harry Styles express that part of himself?

tenzzor

1985 by Yen Tan is extremely good and somewhat underrated.

Electrical-Load-6383

Excellent!!

Electrical-Load-6383

1. Holding the Man because the acting is superb, and it is realistic. 2-3. Los fuertes (The Strong Ones) is a beautiful Chilean film about a wistful romance. Contracorriente (Undertow) is another beautiful Latin American film about love and loss. 4.-5. I also recommend the British films Pride and God's Own Country, neither of which are tragedies. Curiously, none of these films are American so I will also give a shout-out to Brokeback Mountain, Paris is Burning, and To Wong Foo Thank You for Everything.

ConnectionEmpty1358

"interview with the vampire" it is a movie and a serie, the movie is from 1994 and the serie is from 2022 and my favorite is the serie surely !
