Currently working nightshift in Louisiana. When i get to work at 345 its 100 degrees and by the time the sun goes down its a nice 80-90. Still sweating but god its so nice not to have the sun beaming down on me. We do rotations. 30 days, 30 nights... But during the summer i'm gonna start asking for strictly nights to escape the heat lol.
I wear ray bans.
They’ve survived being dropped, fights, etc so far. I have paused while fighting someone to move them out of the way to make sure me and the suspect didn’t roll over them
Did you ask them to wait so your glasses dont get broken? I've found that during fights if you say 'Hold on let me move this so we dont break it' some people actually stop for a second and then things continue. People like that i tend to give lesser charges as a thanks lol.
What's up with cops and oakleys? Aren't you worried those things would get broken in a scuffle?
I mean I have a couple Ray-Bans, but I'd never wear them to work lol
I’m under the Oakley SI program so I get a pretty hefty government discount on any and all glasses I buy (and since I need prescription lenses, I’ll take the 25-50% discounts anyday)
I love Frontline Optics.
Particularly these. https://frontline-optics.com/collections/mens-shades/products/pamona
The price is right, they offer great protection.
And the no questions asked replacement program is the real deal! I left my glasses in a school while assisting in administering a POWER test to a class of recruits and they replaced em for me. I did have to pay shipping but it was like $12.
I don’t see myself buying elsewhere anytime soon!
No one has said it yet so I will… Goodr glasses are fantastic for their price. Really good selection, pretty good looking, and easy to get (amazon or any running store). Bought mine for $28 and hasnt broken or nothin on me
Second Goodr. Can get solid black glasses for like $25 that won’t slide around on your face. Cheap enough you don’t have to wait for sales or get upset if the break/get lost.
Oakley Flak 2.0 currently.
Been wearing half jackets or flaks for almost 25 years…well before I even considered becoming a cop.
Back when I first started wearing contacts I’d just buy cheap sunglasses at the gas station or whatever, but they weren’t all that comfortable to wear and would break easily. I also didn’t really care much about them because they were cheap.
Buying cheap shit gets expensive if you have to keep replacing it. I finally decided to spend the money on a good pair of sunglasses and haven’t looked back. I’ve never broken a pair of or off the job.
On my work pair? Dark grey or something. I don't know what color Oakley calls it. The pair I typically wear for personal use has blue lenses.
I always get prizm polarized lenses.
I’ve tried every major brand, costa, Oakley, Maui Jim, and smith. In uniform or on the water, smiths are the best, and by far. Anyone who tries my sunglasses on can’t believe how nice they are. I have no loyalty to any brand and no one pays me but my job. My father liked them so much he asked for a pair and he never asks for anything.
I used these. They’re cheap, less likely to crack in a fight, look okay, and I don’t cry if they get broken/lost.

$10 safety glasses from Walmart. Although I’ve been eyeing up a set of high end glasses, I was told (not sure if it’s true) the cheap ones dilate your eyes and offer very little uv protection. This combination can damage your eyes over time and allow more exposure than no glasses.
Polycarbonate, by design, offers uv protection but are there added measures on the higher end lens? Or are you paying for a brand name? I have yet to find a solid answer from a reputable source. That being said, $150 or so isn’t crazy to potentially avoid eye damage.
When I was young and new- Oakley Flak Jackets. Actually lost them on vacation not broken on duty, but the point about expensive shades on duty is legit. Almost broke them a few times in fights if not for their great durability. But they have a real "LEO is my identity/sheepdog" look that is antiquated these days anyway.
Now- for more dynamic street stuff, on foot surveillance- super cheap wayfarer style shades that I can replace easily, fit in as "just a dude." When I'm pretty much guaranteed to not be doing anything crazy- Ray Ban Caravans.
Uvex Hypershock safety glasses. Less than 20 bucks, when they get scratched up I toss em and grab the next pair out of my locker.
That or WileyX if I'm feeling fancy.
I promise you won’t find anything better than Goodr. They are like 20$. Come with a warranty. Fully polarized. Sweat resistant. Stick to your face. And come in tons of different styles.
I used Arnette 30 years ago, then Prada when they still had sunglasses, and since then Oakley for a few pairs. EssilorLuxottica has swallowed up most major brands these days including most of the brands mentioned in this thread.
Night shift is the best sunglasses
Imagine working when the sun is up, gross.
I could never be a day walker
Yea, but still need them so the sun doesn’t wake you up in the morning.
The sun waking me up is the only thing that prevents every cop between my station and my house from finding me asleep at a green light
And the best SPF is Building
Also the best antiperspirant
Literally spat out my coffee laughing when I read this. Nice one!

Always sunny in douche ville
Cheap Walmart fishing section glasses. Had Oakley’s they are in the woods somewhere behind someone’s house.
Expensive glasses are for chumps.
This guy is clearly a fed. Don’t tell him.
😂😂😂😂😂

Oakley Holbrook. Mainly use them for glare while driving. When I’m rolling up on scene they go in the sunglass holder
Yep I use the Holbrooks with the Prizm P lenses. Except I use them all the time. Go through a pair every year or so
Yuuuup same exact use case; those bad boys never go anywhere near hot calls. They’re the best for that 1730 glare.
This is what I’m rolling with as well.

1. They’re tools. 2. Oakley offers a pretty decent gov/LE/ Mil discount program. I prefer costas at the moment.
Exactly. They’re PPE (personal protective equipment), and good gear isn’t typically cheap.
I’m under the Oakley SI program so I get a pretty hefty government discount on any and all glasses I buy (and since I need prescription lenses, I’ll take the 25-50% discounts anyday)
Oakley flak jacket. The same style as I’ve had for almost 20 years.
Mine can detect power levels
Find anyone over 9000 yet?
Obly dudes on PCP
Sounds accurate. How many tazes does it take to get 'em down? Or do you need to resort to the kamehameha?

Oakley halbrooks. Oakley SI program is too nice to pass up
No one has said it yet so I will… Goodr glasses are fantastic for their price. Really good selection, pretty good looking, and easy to get (amazon or any running store). Bought mine for $28 and hasnt broken or nothin on me

Exactly. They also all come with a soft storage pouch that i keep in my duty bag so i Can clean it
$12 Iron Man (brand, not superhero) ones I got at target. If they break, no big deal.
My go to, got a pair in each of my personal cars and one in the patrol bag

Oakley straight jackets. Been wearing these for about 15 years. Probably on my 4th pair of lenses.
This is the only acceptable answer
A $20 pair of aviators I bought at a gas station.
Shady Rays
Seconding shady rays here. They have all the styles and the warranty is fantastic.
Frontline Optics. Free replacement, no questions asked. They're US LEO/Veteran owned. Support them, not companies like Oakley.
Gatorz they’ve survived washes, cacti, fights, ranges, beating the brush, ocotillo, and my dog
Can't beat Gatorz
Never asked the maintenance guy what kind of tent is on my office window.
Maui Jims… nothing better on the market
are they durable?
Yes, the titanium ones especially. The lenses are also miles above most other brands.
I used these. They’re cheap, less likely to crack in a fight, look okay, and I don’t cry if they get broken/lost. Edit forgot link: https://safetyglassesusa.com/products/kleenguard-nemesis-safety-glasses-with-black-frame-and-anti-fog-smoke-lens
Exactly! Work fine and are easily replaced. Had expensive Oakleys get broke in a fight. Never again.

Cheapest ones that look good, probably from the gas station. They get scratched or you’ll lose them and it sucks loosing expensive ones
When I was young and new- Oakley Flak Jackets. Actually lost them on vacation not broken on duty, but the point about expensive shades on duty is legit. Almost broke them a few times in fights if not for their great durability. But they have a real "LEO is my identity/sheepdog" look that is antiquated these days anyway. https://a.co/d/9efV7sW I like these, cheap but seem to be higher quality then you’d think. They’ve withstood a lot since 2022. Still going strong
Oakley Corridor
The $20 gas station ones. I've lost/broke probably a dozen pairs in my career.
Walmart $20 ones. They either get scratched to shit or lost in someone’s car
Gas station special. $15 dollars and if they get broken or scratched, I’m not out $200
Any Oakley SI frames (solid for my prescription lenses and I get my government discount so it’s a win-win for me)
Oakley Gascan
Cheap $20 stuff from Academy but ive been on night shift so dont need any glasses.
Costa’s
Gargoyles
Shady Rays, great replacement program and affordable. Buy around holidays, they are normally running a decent deal.
I generally run whatever set of Walmart fishing glasses fit. Polarized and I don’t care if they get damaged
Whatever $20 Amazon special gets me polarized and blue blocking. Inevitably, they end up scratched and lost.
Prescription Costa del Mar wrap around. I ride motors so need something Prescription and comfortable
Oakley
Amazon specials

Quay
Uvex Hypershock safety glasses. Less than 20 bucks, when they get scratched up I toss em and grab the next pair out of my locker. That or WileyX if I'm feeling fancy.

Oakley Radar EV with the Prismmm lenses oooo wee!
Toroe, big to actually block sun and light so can wear long hours. Not very expensive https://www.toroeeyewear.com Govx discount too
Oakley's are pretty good sunglasses and they produce versions which can also be used for eye protection for shooting
Oakley gas cans with white frames with blue reflective lenses.
I promise you won’t find anything better than Goodr. They are like 20$. Come with a warranty. Fully polarized. Sweat resistant. Stick to your face. And come in tons of different styles.
I have a pair of Oakley blue lines, they were a gift, don't judge me.
$5 Walmart ones
Costa Del Mar
Mirrored

What’s the sun?
Aviator shades while chewing bubblegum
I used Arnette 30 years ago, then Prada when they still had sunglasses, and since then Oakley for a few pairs. EssilorLuxottica has swallowed up most major brands these days including most of the brands mentioned in this thread.
