I started my martial arts journey as a striker got into a lot of striking vs grappling debates back in the day and decided to give grappling a try. I got really into it for a bit. I did no-gi as I had a MMA focus and realized that BJJ especially gi BJJ is largely overrated when it comes to being an effective well rounded fighter as that was my goal. Not saying that it is bad but overrated. After sometime I went back to striking. I still roll every now and then and give higher belts a good roll sometimes even getting a tap up to purple belt level. Never subbed a brown or black belt though. Everything you need from BJJ for MMA can be found at the white belt level. On bottom use closed or butterfly or half to sweep or very occasionally a triangle, Takedowns once on top stay on top : RNC, arm triangle, triangle chokes, guillotines, armbar, kimura, heel hook, and straight ankle is really all you need. I've also seen a lot of BJJ guys bested in sparring by more well rounded fighters and strikers with mediocre grappling knowledge. **TL;DR**: BJJ is overated and most BJJ guys look like Kron Gracie against well rounded fighters. Only rolled no-gi and have no real interest in climbing the ranks. I may at some point become a full time GI BJJ guy and seek promotion but as it stands now my white belt is cool and it's funny to show up to open mat and be able to hang with blue and purple belts.

Thanks for the reply

Dude I was practicing with dislocated my shoulder. Do you know how much an ER visit is just to pop a shoulder back in? Yeah.... the drugs are great though.

Thanks for your reply.

I wanted a more comprehensive style for better ground fundamentals since that's where most fights are solved.

DoubleJay89

Hello thanks for reply. What martial art did you choose?

very_undeliverable

Brazilian jiu jitsu. It was fulfilling for me. After many many years I went to animal-style kung-fu for fun, which was great for body training, terrible for actually fighting anyone. But it was a total riot.

I used to train judo, boxing, and tang soo do and compete regularly. In jiu-jitsu a guy was over zealous and cracked my Rib because he was Mr. Macho. I said, I'm too old for this. Now I just do body building and leave that to the younger guys.
