Holy shit. This thread is amazing “Dubai Fictional city Dubai Dubai Fictional city Dubai Vegas Fictional city Dubai Dubai Fictional city” Like I just gave up scrolling but it was a very fun romp

Dubai is just shittier Vegas. * Middle of the desert * The "tourist attractions" are just a bunch of random weird looking buildings you go spend your money in * If you have money you can get your hands on anything you want there * People who built it are shady af

toolroomknights

Before I opened the thread I guessed Dubai. Not because I have been there or ever experienced it first hand, but every time there’s a Reddit thread for overrated city, overrated vacation spot, place not worth going to, etc, the top answer is Dubai every time.

madhaxor

I feel like Dubai would be fun if you were a multi millionaire or billionaire, but for us regular folks, what’s the real draw? It’s

max_power1000

After going there twice while in the US Navy, I said to myself if I ever wanted to hang out at an overpriced resort in the middle of the desert and get drunk by the pool, I'll save money on the airfare and just go to Vegas. At least they have shows and gambling if I'm feeling up for either.

prizzabroy

And really good legal weed. Cant forget that

AffectionateGap1071

The whole point is that for homeless and impoverished masses, Dubai is a living hazard, not an unappealing "attraction". I heard Dubai was build on slaves working their fingers to the bone... Edit= Changed the word, poor people for slaves, they truly are.

Badloss

Not to worry, Dubai doesn't have any poor people ... because the slaves are kept in camps outside the city where they won't bother anybody

Mother_Store6368

Actually, they’re kept in camps near whatever ridiculous construction project they’re working on… Or they’re kept as domestic servants

It's literally slaves

HubCode007

>Dubai A city built by slave labor and influencers getting paid by the government to promote their city and going so far as to you know. They also claim that they don't have homeless people, but these people are actually deported and put into jail. > >A UAE visa is also hard to get, even a work permit is hard to get, no matter what people say, you think getting permanent residence in Dubai is like getting a green card in the us, having the same status but way less time. Well, the less time might be true, but you have to be fealty rich, or else they kick you out. Even with the card they can still deport people. SO NO, it's not like getting a green card, and us green card is more valuable than the stupid shit Dubai gives you. > >So, Yah, and you know the burger Califa (yes, I misspelled) well it was built by not bending infrastructure laws but by breaking them, putting work lives at risk, and making so many of these poor workers killed just to not even invest in adding a sewage system. God, it gets even worse. > >So, you know their highway system, it's the worst, they built it in a jiffy, and they even forgot to put exit signs, what a shameless city. And the schools are the worst, you know that they do not have proper rules for education and kids can be beaten up in the past. So, when you have a dream of Dubai, do not, and I repeat do not bring your kids there. > >Are there any good things in Dubai? > >Yes, the only good thing is their airline (emirates) I went with them and they treated me and my mom really well, the people there are good, the airline is good. And even if the airport is a bit small for its size, it is sufficient for tasks, like boarding your plane, and that's all. > >So Yah.

Visionarii

I was going to say Paris until I saw this. Yes, you're right, it's Dubai.

Krizzlin

Haha this was exactly the comment I was about to post. Reddit loves to shit on Paris (rightly in my opinion) but when you put it up against Dubai they are of course worlds apart. Paris is intolerable because of its popularity and the hype whereas Dubai is a soulless dystopia built on slave labour and human rights abuses, propping up a despicable regime in an attempt at soft power to glamorise a nation that shouldn't be anything but shunned as a wretched hive of scum and villainy. The idea that anyone would voluntarily choose to visit Dubai and support everything it stands for seems completely alien to me. I'd sooner spend a weekend in Luton

LocoRocoo

Paris is considered over rated so much that it begins to get underrated.

AdElectrical7157

I have not been to Dubai but I've been to Paris multiple times and I've also been to Las Vegas which by the sound of it has many similarities to Dubai as far as being an artificial, desert hell scape. I really don't see how ppl can shit on Paris the same way. If you treat Paris like Disneyland then that's the version you'll get. If you take advantage of the fuck ton of amazing culture things they have then, that's what you'll get...

TWH_PDX

I've been to Paris a handful of times. Before my first visit, I was mentally prepared to be disappointed and hate it by reputation alone. Instead, I had an entirely positive visit and each time thereafter. Do millions visit the Louvre or the Eiffel Tower each year? Yes, but it is totally worth it. But if crowds aren't your thing, there are hundreds of smaller museums or sites to see. Or, just spending a quiet day walking some of the districts or parks is a pleasure.

kharnynb

you can go to jail for being raped as a woman.....

Area51Anon

I’m a little confused here so bear with me.. you’re saying that if a woman gets raped and reports it to authority, THEY can get arrested?

[deleted]

They consider it premarital sex, which isn't "allowed." Doesn't matter if it wasn't consensual.

Obamas_Tie

The dude gets arrested too, right? Right?

False_Implement_43

nice joke

MacroSolid

Basically to prove rape under islamic law you need a bunch of witnesses (and women count half as much), which you probably won't have. And if you don't they can take the rape accusation as a confession of premarital sex, which is a crime. And the perps are just gonna deny everything. EDIT: Note that this is not neccesarily how muslim majority countries do it these days. Interpretations vary. Also the UAE decriminalised premarital sex in 2020.

flameroran77

“Your honor the sex both did and did not happen.” “I find the lady guilty. Now do it again.”

Zealousideal_Soup_37

You saying that a woman witness counts half as much is a metaphorical way of saying that their testimony is not treated seriously, or it is a literal thing where you need two female witnesses in order to count as a full testimony?

MacroSolid

Literal. You'd need 4 male witnesses for proof or 8 female witnesses.

Abigail716

No. Because he will deny he had sex. You will go to jail because you've confessed a premarital sex, he will have to go to a trial, which if he's well connected won't matter even if the trial happens because he's denying he ever had sex. Charges will be dropped against him for lack of evidence and you will go to jail because you confessed.

LukePickle007

That's fucked.

Sad_Gear3673

Good one.

alfred-the-greatest

Yeah, my friend got raped in Dubai. She was smart enough to not report to the police but to go to the Australian embassy and they immediately got her out of there.

starskyandbutch

I’m really sorry that that happened to your friend. Did anything happen to the rapist? Was the Australian embassy able to do anything?

alfred-the-greatest

They got her out of the country that day without her being arrested.

TrumpsNeckSmegma

There was a huge scandal about that years back. I recall a woman getting gang raped simply because she wasn't out with her husband. And then the courts sentenced the guys to prison, but then also sentenced her - with lashes on top The firestorm was so big that their king had to pardon her

HowevenamI

That makes me so fucking angry. That's the least fair thing you could possibly do to a human. Fuck those *"men"*. Fuck their *"culture"*. Fuck that *"justice system"*.

Surprised I haven’t seen this: Monte Carlo. 2 days is about all you need to see the views nearby and walk around. Then it’s just got that fake glamour vibe. Women (and men for that matter) with god knows how much plastic surgery. It’s like people go there to show off how rich they are and other people go there to pretend how rich they are

karlosvonawesome

Not even worth the 2 days (in Monaco at least). Hop on the train from France, walk around the harbour, look at the casinos, go to the aquarium, walk through the gardens, maybe grab a coffee that's it, you're done. Nothing else to see.

astronautdinosaur

Yeah, I stayed in Nice and spent like an afternoon in Monaco, seemed like enough

andrewtri800

(Monaco is the city, Monte Carlo is part of the city-state of Monaco)

socool111

Yea the semantics are a bit weird in that Monaco is a country but also a city and Monte Carlo is like a section of the city. For the purposes of this question though I feel that it gets the point across

Lacherig

I think Miami can be what you make it — at least as a tourist. I went earlier this year and spent four days in the city. I ate a ton of Cuban food in Little Havana, spent time reading books on the beach and at the hotel pool, and absolutely loved the art museum and Vizcaya. It definitely has its trashy side, but you can avoid that for a long weekend.

Kvsav57

Oh yeah. I used to live in south Florida. Miami is a fun weekend if you have the money. As a place to live or be for an extended period, it's awful unless you're really rich. And even then, there are much better places in the US to live if you have a lot of money.

Or1g1nalrepr0duct10n

I’ve been to Miami for work and for vacation. It’s not that bad during the day, even South Beach can be pleasant enough. Good food, relatively clean, easy to get around. At night it’s the silliest place in the USA east of Vegas.

SamboTheSodaJerk

Miami sucks. Its the wannabe influencer capital of the world. Everything is expensive, all the women look like Bogdanoff twins, the city smells like urine

Wait, the bogdanoff twins are famous outside of France ??!! Or you are french ?

Damnnit someone said it first. But I really didnt think it was after spending years in Ft. Lauderdale. I swear south beach is for really broke people who spend thousands of dollars just because they think it's the only place to get lit. They can have a blast in SEA for a month for the week they spend there.

[deleted]

i can’t believe i had to scroll down this far to find LA. i love the good people of LA and all the angelino’s - but so much of LA has turned into a blown out, inconvenient, chaotic, poorly run, overpriced, idiot ridden, dump.

nattyd

Probably always been this way. But yeah, it’s such a frustrating place because it’s got so much going for it (geography, topography, food, culture, weather), and squanders it by being the worst-planned city in the developed world.

ElevenBurnie

I don't think LA is overrated, though. My whole life, as someone who grew up in the northeast, people have shit on LA. When I lived there it was so much nicer and absolutely underrated as a result of the low bar people place on the city.

The34Zero

Vegas.. two days is enough then shit becomes nasty and you just wanna get out of there.

cavacom

When planning a trip to Las Vegas, the rule is "4 days max"

MaskedGambler

Having been to Vegas 10+ times. 4 days is way too long. 3 days, 2 nights is max.

creepystepdad72

Fully agreed. Night 1 you're excited to be there and overdo it. Night 2 you have a late start, then end up going hard until sunrise since you only got back to human around midnight. Then full degenerate mode sets in on Day 3, where you say to yourself, "I should have just started drinking earlier in the day yesterday - that way I wouldn't have stayed out all night." Spoiler: This plan does not work.

patoylish

I’m at 48 hours absolute max, 24 hours ideally

BigVGK93

Been here my whole life life 😭

guamsdchico

I’ve been to worse tourist cities. Having a car in Vegas really opens up your options. I gamble maybe 6-8 hours on a 4-5 day trip. The rest of the time is spent golfing, going out to local areas for food, or catching a couple of shows. The Vegas food scene outside of the strip is really impressive. A lot of my favorite hole in the wall places have upgraded to better locations in new areas.

spickle76

We love going to red rocks when we visit. Renting a car really does change the experience.

bedroom_fascist

I lived there a while - most of the "opinions" are from tourists who are (carefully) kept on the Strip (which the locals used to call 'The Pigpen,' perhaps still do) and know nothing about the city, the neighborhoods, the gorgeous nature immediately around and abutting. Which, you know: OK. But it's like people who go to the Statue of Liberty and Empire State Bldg talking about "New York." The Strip =/= the city of Las Vegas.

porncrank

Depends on how you approach it. If it's heavy drinking and gambling, sure, a few days is a good limit. If it's more exploratory you can find lots of cool stuff to do, on and off the strip, and stretch it out for a while. Or actually live here like I do. It's pretty fun.

[deleted]

Go off strip and there’s more out here. Plenty of great hiking trails, museums, and even skiing

randomacct7679

Vegas isn’t designed for stays beyond 3 or so days. It’s great in short bursts but not at all for a long visit. It’s a weekend trip destination, same as New Orleans.

Soatch

People going to Niagara Falls should spend some time in Toronto and/or Buffalo too. Do a 3 day weekend and you can have a good trip.

zoobrix

A trip to Niagara Falls should be just that, you see the falls and then you leave. Almost any other place you go will be more interesting than the rest of the town.

jrblockquote

Rochester native here and Niagara Falls can be a fun place for a few days. Maid of the Mist is fabulous. There is no other experience on earth like being encapsulated by the thundering falls. Cave of the Winds is absolutely worth it and allows for a visceral experience. I enjoy seeing the Falls lit up at night. The Niagara Speedway might be the best go-kart track I've been on. Niagara on the Lake is a super cute and fun town. The butterfly conservatory is best in class (shout out to the three Atlas moths I saw, the largest in the world). I'd recommend adding a trip to Toronto to round out the trip.

AppleSlacks

I wanted to take my kids to see the falls this past year and we did have a good time but tried to avoid too much of the crap. Rode the ferris wheel, because I always enjoy them and let them do the go karts once. Also picked them up a beaver tail to try as a fun regional dessert. I had had them as a kid on trips up to Ottawa. The areas around have some fun things to do though. We enjoyed the falls themselves, including the walk behind them and the little white water walk farther down in the canyon downstream. Enjoyed the butterfly museum which was a nice break. Took a drive up and through Niagara- on- the-Lake which is a really pretty town and on the drive back found two places I really enjoyed. First this pizza/brewery, The Grist. Great pizza and a nice spot to relax and have a family meal with a few drinks. Second Counterpart Brewing is doing some really nice hazy IPA's in the area. I agree the surrounding areas are lacking in investment though, immediately surrounding downtown. We were on an extended drive and popped into the Walmart, grabbed some water bottles but also checked out odds and ends groceries that were new to us. I really wish I could get All Dressed chips where I live....

VMF86

Miami. Seems that everything must have a “luxury” label there.

Emotional-Fly-6262

Nashville 100%. All the bars are just a collection of the worst people you knew in high school. The traffic and infrastructure is pure hell. Nothing is affordable. It's way too crowded and everyone that moves there is insufferable. It's awful

Wide_Muffin_4797

Hard agree, except my friends and I found a gem last time we were there called Santa’s Pub. It’s essentially just a double wide trailer decorated for Xmas all year round and they pass you PBR from the kitchen fridge. I think there’s also karaoke every night. If you’re lucky, Santa and Mrs. Claus themselves (the real life owners) will be hanging around. Just a wholesome vibe!!

[deleted]

As someone who went to high school in the Nashville area, the bars might literally be filled with the worst people I knew in high school

Raccoon City. Every time I visit it’s always dead.

balke

Why did I think this was Toronto

carrimjob

September 30th, 1998. It's a day I'll never forget. The cop inside me died that day. And that night, Raccoon City was wiped out, thanks to the bioweapons created by Umbrella. Somehow, I made it out. But too many others...weren't so lucky. I was "asked" later to join a top-secret government program. Not that I had a choice. The training, the punishing missions...nearly killed me, but at least they kept my mind off everything. If I could just forget what happened that night - the pain, even for a second? This time, it can be different. It has to.

King_Internets

Dallas. Hands down. Might be the only place I’ve ever visited with absolutely zero personality.

betterthanfire

Dallas! Come see where a US president was shot in the head! Yes, that is our best attraction.

daveyhempton

All big TX cities have that problem. Austin for example, they have signs at several places saying “Keep Austin Weird” and the thing is there is nothing weird about it. There is nothing out of the ordinary. It looks the same as 100s of other 100k+ population cities

kababed

Any weird vibe that Austin had/has can be found in any college town across the US. Madison, Boulder, Berkeley, Athens were full of this culture before housing got expensive. The scenes in Slacker weren’t that out of the ordinary

[deleted]

San Antonio is actually pretty cool and the most underrated Texas city. It’s what Texas cities should be, having cultural influence from Mexico and the old west days. Austin is like any other soulless city that has no character other than it’s lack of character. It’s turned into a big shopping strip like Dallas.

ValhallaGo

The river walk is genuinely enjoyable, and there are great little hole in the wall Mexican joints with seriously good food.

danarchist

To be fair, nobody is rating Dallas that highly to begin with.

Kingkongcrapper

“Got to love that downtown vibe,” is something nobody ever says while visiting Dallas.

IPABrad

I think Las Vegas is overrated. The first time i went, I expected it to be party central, but it feel kinda limited in the nightlife options. It also has so little to see and do outside of this. In terms of nightlife I would much rather go to London, Amsterdam or Bangkok.

d33p_blu3

I gotta give my city some love. I live in Vegas and work on the strip. Once you learn the city you can sift through big and flashy and find the good stuff. There’s great live music all over the city. Always a show or concert. And there’s a whole lot to do off strip that has nothing to do with gambling. Red Rock Canyon. Valley of Fire. Lake Meade. Mount Charleston. Ghost towns. I could go on. It’s hard for tourists to see that when they are only here for a week.

CharmingDagger

Valley of Fire is beautiful

Loud_Clerk_9399

Vegas just ain't that that big. Even Nola runs into this problem a bit

Parking_Anywhere_708

I was in Montreal a couple months ago for a wedding. It was never on my list of places to go. While I was there and since I've told everyone who's asked that it's the most underrated place to visit. Loved it.

Melodic-Change-6388

When in Rome…get ready to have the best time of your life.

OkayJuice

My only complaint is that there way sooo many tourists (even though I was a tourist lol). I lived in Italy when the pandemic hit and traveling to Rome with zero out of country tourists was amazing. Dubai Dubai lacks the real charm beyond its towering skyscrapers, fancy restaurants, and luxury hotels. It's missing the authenticity that ties into the city's culture and history, which makes it feel artificial and soulless.

Polluticornwishes0

Came here to downvote everyone who says New Orleans. I miss home 😞

Dependent-Garlic-291

Austin. Of course people will always say the decade before you mentioned you lived there was better, but I lived there in ‘03-‘08. It was starting to grow and still had the weird vibe. A mix of small town and big city. Countless great restaurants that had been there for decades and legendary venues for music. Then around ‘07, the lofts started being built. The weirdness slowly started to fade as the artists who made up the town and uniqueness, had to relocate because of the influx of Californians and cost of living increases. Gentrification of the east side replaced minorities and poor people with more lofts and high rise apartments. I still visit Austin for shows, but I no longer recognize it. It feels the soul has left and now there’s fancy restaurants and boutiques and rich hipsters and tech bros. No more gutter punks on the strip. The homeless have made their homes all over downtown, only to be relocated when SXSW or ACL brings in people from all over the world.

Yeah to me it feels like you need to have money to even afford to be near the cool parts of Austin. And with terrible traffic and terrible public transit, it’s not like you can live somewhere with affordable rent and easily pop over to the areas and activities Austin is beloved for. lived there years 2001-2010 and 2016-2022. Never felt like I experienced Austin. Just such a hassle going to cool spots.

Amen, myself and my friends would cancel plans all the time because it’s such a hassle and too expensive to get anywhere or do anything. Unless you live downtown or want to pay for an Uber drinking on 6th street is out of the question. Not to mention outside of that and some lake stuff there really isn’t anything to do there, especially to justify the CoL.

Been living here my entire life since birth. It's still great and I can't ever stop loving it, but it's definitely lost some charm. That's expected when cities grow I guess but I still get nostalgic every once in a while for late 90s/early 2000s Austin.
