I was coming here to say this movie! It's a must watch, to remember, to showcase what we can do, good and bad. I think it's a movie that can change peoples perspectives of the world and how to treat others.
Saw this as a teenager during my “rent random movies from Netflix” phase, and I hesitated on renting it because it was two discs and I’m so glad I did. One of my faves.
I didn’t watch it for years because it was in black and white, a decision I thought (and still do) was sort of absurd for a movie made in the 90’s. But I decided to suck it up and watch it and, likewise, I’m glad I did.
Yes please. I had to explain, in gory detail, why hitler was a bad guy to a bunch of 15 year olds last year because they don’t talk about the 2nd world war in school enough anymore. No wonder there’s a resurgence of holocaust deniers. Everyone should have to watch Schindler’s list. And Hannah’s War.
I was talking to a homeless dude and asked him if he used and he was really open about it he said he quit shooting up heroin for smoking fentanyl because the high is higher and more intense. He said it proudly too like a boast.
Edit: I always thought shooting heroin was like peak drug use because that's the one that most people do before they croak. Apparently fentanyl is even 'better' than that. Surprised I was.
The difference between say an oxy, heroin, is NOTHING compared to fentanyl. It’s ridiculous how a tiny tiny tiny amount kills people. It’s getting mixed in with other things and everything is way more dangerous than before fentanyl. I was hooked up on a drip of it when I was paralysed and it was so intense. Unless I’m like dying or been in an accident I’ll never touch it again
Anyone who loves Airplane! really must watch Zero Hour! (1957). The plot and the dialogue are almost entirely taken from ZH, which is a serious drama. But because everything in the movie is repeatedly as a joke in Airplane!, watching Zero Hour! is unintentionally hilarious.
This was my vote too.
No other movie so clearly and expertly demonstrated to me the importance of keeping an open mind.
I often suggest this movie to people and tell them it changed the way I process new information, and to recognize my biases and assumptions.
Whenever I hear about juries being in deliberation (which is everyday now due to the news) this movie comes to mind, and I always wonder if juries are really doing their due diligence like the one fellow, or if they are just ready to get to the baseball game
It has been a couple years but when I was last on jury duty this movie also came to my mind. Surprisingly, a number of people said things along the lines of "did you see him in court? He looks like the kind of person that would xxxxxxx" or "he didn't even provide a defense he must be guilty" besides being told strictly these are not things to consider in deliberation. When those are the arguments you are running into with anything in life it usually is the sign of people having made up their mind. And while they were not trying to get done for the baseball game, you bet your ass 90% of everyone wanted out of there ASAP because the weekend was coming up.
Just rewatched the other day for the hundredth time. I’m Black and this movie can feel very uncomfortable but it is so deep and introspective. An important movie for sure.
The Princess Bride. Because it's got everything: fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles... and it's *inconceivable* not to love it!
This movie comes up every single time a question like this is asked. I’m sorry, I just don’t get it. Maybe because I never saw it as a child.
I was in university when my friend group realised I had never seen it, and they organised a movie night to watch it. I could barely get through it; it’s so bad. I just cannot understand what people like about this movie, and I’m convinced it’s just nostalgia.
It has some good parts.
The problem with that movie, is the premise is eugenics.
Dogmatic thinking,. tribalism, and late stage capitalism is what is driving us towards a world like that.
It's not "the wrong people having too many kids."
AKIRA - one of the most influential movies ever. It is unlikely you have gone through your life without seeing a peice of media that contains the famous [Kaneda Bike Slide](https://youtu.be/A9hCzjBc7Q4?si=GinI9qI3TukuVu5P). It's a movie that can be a little hard to follow and may take a watch or two (trying to fit a large Manga series into 2 hours is hard) but it's incredibly interesting.
Everything everywhere all at once, it’s one of the only movies that every time I watch it my life gets turned around for at least a week or two afterwards. I never stop thinking about it and how it has effected my overall outlook on life
Hot fuzz and world's end are 2 movies I show everyone. Hit fuzz because it's just so so good and world's end because it's so good but also the message. Plus usually people will watch it a second time and notice the bar symbolism and that makes me happy lol
The mist. I refuse to elaborate further on reasoning but whoever has watched it - will agree that other people should also watch it. It's an unsaid agreement that we always encourage others to watch that movie after we have watched it.
Black Panther - *that's* how you do representation and it's a masterclass in how to do a good superhero movie, with the moral debate of the protagonist and antagonist, and that the antagonist has a really valid point Michael B Jordan killed that role alongside Chadwick, amazing cinematography, excellent score, amazing watch.
On the other hand, Inside Out is also a must watch. A really seemingly fun watch but navigates the human brain and emotional state like no other movie, and manages to showcase the dangers of no balance in emotions through toxic positivity.
La La Land is also a must watch for me. The message is painful but needed: we really can't have it all in the world there's simply such a small chance your life ends up exactly how you want it. Stone and Gosling shine in the movie and the last scene (iykyky) is just heartbreaking, right person wrong time is such a common trope in literature and it was amazing to see a mainstream film tackle this trope and execute it amazingly
Jurassic Park.
I am not the type of person who can watch the same movie multiple times, but this is one of the rare ones. It’s fun, the dinosaurs still look cool, I still want one of the goggles the kids had.

Phantom Thread!!! It's a masterpiece. 🙌
I've watched it several years ago yet every time someone asks me what my fave movie is, I instantly answer this. 🤌
I think everyone should try to watch earthlings. It's not the most objective representation of the industry of animal products, but people should be aware of the steps taken to produce the things they consume.
I consume animal products but knowing how they are made changes thins imo.
Baraka - It's a documentary type movie with no dialogue, but the sheer beauty and implied story are beautiful and really gives you time and space to think about the world and humanity.
Not a single reply under any question about a movie that doesn't have one of the following films:
Green Mile
Shawshank
Grave of the Fireflies
Schindler's List
Redline - great animation with a banger OST with a well-written plot.
John Wick - all of them got better than the last, in terms of visuals, sound, overall cinematography and cast. Imo they did representation right because in their world, EVERYONE was a bad ass. Whether you're black, white, asian, mute and even asthmatic. Everyone (except the nepo babies) looked and played as a badass assassin all connected in this mysterious assassin world.
My Cousin Vinny - honestly what's not to love about the movie? Marisa Tomei + Danny Devito worked soo good. I first watched this movie in HS for an elective considering it's a good lawyer movie. Would I say it's accurate? Idk I don't practice.
I maintain a list for this exact need:

And/or The Pianist
Immediately came to mind. For big movie buffs Life Is Beautiful is also pretty damn good
Saw this as a teenager during my “rent random movies from Netflix” phase, and I hesitated on renting it because it was two discs and I’m so glad I did. One of my faves.

Just to see the value and meaning of a list. Back then a list was life or death. It was important.
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas.
Requiem for a dream. Stay away from heroin kids
Agree but hard to get these days 2024 message - Stay away from fentanyl kids
I was talking to a homeless dude and asked him if he used and he was really open about it he said he quit shooting up heroin for smoking fentanyl because the high is higher and more intense. He said it proudly too like a boast. Edit: I always thought shooting heroin was like peak drug use because that's the one that most people do before they croak. was just saying to my gf that she should watch it, but im not gonna do it ever again. amazing movie but never again
Don't forget the diet pills. Better keep your distance from those, too.
Shawshank Redemption
I love it!
It’s the best of all movies anyway
Unironically, Airplane!
Surely you can't be serious?
I am serious and don't call me Shirley!
Roger, Roger. We have clearance, Clarence. What's our vector, Victor?

had to scroll way too down for this gem
I saw this at a college cinema night on a double bill with Dr Strangelove
American History X
Just rewatched the other day for the hundredth time. I’m Black and this movie can feel very uncomfortable but it is so deep and introspective. An important movie for sure.
I haven’t watched this in years but such a powerful movie. I’m white and it’s uncomfortable. Unbridled hatred should make us struggle to watch.
Second Hand Lions.
"Just plant us in the damn garden." I love that movie. edit:corrected quote
That is really good.
So happy other people know about this gem of a movie 😭
It’s a wonderful life. The bad guys don’t always get their comeuppance but life can still be worth fighting for.
My favorite movie of all time!
I always imagine that Mr. Potter's comeuppance is guaranteed by proof that heaven exists, and he certainly won't get there.
The Princess Bride. Because it's got everything: fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles... and it's *inconceivable* not to love it!
You keep using that word
I don't think it means what you think it means.
*laughs and falls over sideways with vacant expression*
For once, I think it means exactly what OP thinks it means.
There’s a shortage of perfect movies in this world. It would be a shame not to watch this one.
This movie comes up every single time a question like this is asked. I’m sorry, I just don’t get it. Maybe because I never saw it as a child. Idiocracy... It's scary how we are heading that way...

Scrolled way too far to find this. Good call
Saving Private Ryan, I feel like it was the first time war was depicted honestly. That beach scene was terrifying.
Shrek. Just that
Lord of the Rings
A Fish Called Wanda
I watch this at least twice a year. I still yell “ASSHOOOOLE” when a driver cuts me off.
Gataca
Dancing with wolves
Tatanka!
My favorite movie of all time. Not dumb bear
Dances?
Interstellar
It’s rereleasing in IMAX this year for the 10 year anniversary. You have got to experience that screen and sound in person!!
It was crazy watching this in the cinema. I remember the sound more than the visuals.
What dreams may come
I read the book decades before the movie came out. It's very good.
Life of Brian
That Brian is a very naughty boy though.
Threads. It’s terrifying.
I had never heard of it. I got a copy a few weeks ago, so now I just need to make some time
Idiocracy
Forest Gump
Something about this movie - I hated it so so much. TLDR - unpopular movie opinion

I love Groundhog day, probably my favourite comedy and in my top 10 list of all movies.
How epic would it be if they announced a remake of Groundhog Day and then re-released the original 🤣
Life is Beautiful
Inglorious bastards
O Brother, Where art thou
Backdoor Sluts 9
It's always great to see a son supporting their mom's work
I just spat my coffee everywhere 😂😂😂😂
Will I still be able to follow along even if I didn't see 1-8?
That was kinda tough to sit through.
👆🏼this. Great story. Backdoor Sluts 9 makes Alt Tit-Fucking 6 look like Cum Junkie’s 7.
Is the plot very different from 1-8? Some films you have to watch the whole series to understand them.
1984
Last of the Mohicans.

The original Star Wars movies
Inglorious Basterds - Christoph Waltz performing Hans Lada is just amazing haha
Yes Man. It's quite nice for people who say maybe to life. Maybe is just no with a delay.
The mist. I refuse to elaborate further on reasoning but whoever has watched it - will agree that other people should also watch it. It's an unsaid agreement that we always encourage others to watch that movie after we have watched it.
Legally Blonde. It seems to some people like a dumb, girly movie, but it is genuinely inspiring, especially for women.
The Hangover.
Braveheart The Green Mile Saving Private Ryan
The Lord of the Rings.
*Holding the extended versions of all three parts, with a total length of nearly 12 hours* That still only counts as one!
The neverending story because then you'd live forever
Requiem of a dream. Just once.
old movies - A Patch Of Blue & Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner?
Little Women, it's really inspirational!
Little Big Man
Boy in the striped pyjamas
That old Drivers Ed movie where Goofy teaches you how to merge onto a highway.
The lovely bones
Black Panther - *that's* how you do representation and it's a masterclass in how to do a good superhero movie, with the moral debate of the protagonist and antagonist, and that the antagonist has a really valid point Michael B Jordan killed that role alongside Chadwick, amazing cinematography, excellent score, amazing watch.
