Guess you are going to have to go back to punch cards. On the plus side for you, your elected representatives might actually understand that technology and not try to ban it.
But would the supreme court agree with the conversion? I think someone would file that question, since there isn't a rule specifying that the president has to be human.
It’s actually less. According to the American Kennel Club, 15 human years equals the first year of a medium-sized dog’s life. Year two for a dog equals about nine years for a human, and after that, each human year would be approximately five years for a dog.
Switching it off would not be a big deal. The problem is that the breaker is so old that if we try to switch it back on, it might start a fire that may or may not burn down the entire neighborhood and the embers may or may not spread across the lake.
Plus, we already tried that in 2016, and shit caught on fire last time.
Luckily the fire was dumb and chased a cop away from the critical parts of the house, but doing it again seems... I'll advisable.
Things over here in the Uk feel pretty dire right now, but it’s still a hell of a long shot from this US shitshow. I mean, the US is probably about to reelect a man who is a known rapist. It doesn’t get much worse than that.
yup in the US it's very much vote and get others to do so but otherwise shut your eyes, cover your ears, and get on with your life because thinking about the political situation has gotten unbearable.
As much as I hate the "bOtH sIdEs" people cause they're mostly just lazy assholes who don't wanna go vote and want to feel self-righteous about it....
Tonight was a huge W for them.
1975 would be good. Then don't elect Reagan and suffer 50 years of tax breaks for the rich and crippling debt. We could take global warming science seriously and be running on clean energy now.
I prefer it over the proprietary, binary-blob, surveillance, ultra-corpo, profit-above-all-else system we've been using since the 1980s.
Actual open source governance and resource based economy sounds like a major breath of fresh air.
We don't need a different OS, we need a factory reset. The system itself is fine and could have run indevinitely in it's 1.8.65 environment, but it seems that the input from our modern interfaces is corrupting it's memory.
We need to reset it to it's base version first. That should buy us some time to figure out how to keep this from happening, but we might need to re-do this a couple of times before we get it right.
Technically, we are not a democracy. We are a democratic republic. We vote for people to represent us and vote on our behalf. In a democracy we would vote on every bill, every spending plan, every policy change, everything. I know what you mean though. If you are not happy with national/state/regional/local government today, don’t vote for any incumbent for any office, get new blood and ideas in there.
“The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.”
You indicated the difference between direct democracy VS representative democracy. You're right that the US is a democratic republic but there's a subtle difference.
Republic in general indicates a system where the head of state is elected. This is as opposed to (for example) a monarchy where the head of state is chosen dinastically. A democracy, instead, is a government where the power is elected through the vote of all inhabitants.
So, for example, the UK and Spain are representative democracies like the USA, since you vote for representatives in the parliament, but they're not republics because the head of state is a king.
Only Americans make that argument, and that mindset is part of why you're so fucked right now.
Do you want to argue about the labels you stick on something, or do you want some say in who has power over you whatever the label you stick on it.
Nah, that's not enough. We also need to change our OS. America runs on Windows XP, and the moment we touch the Internet, we'll get every single virus there is.
\>Supreme Court legalized bribery
Not one article about it during prime time news or online
\>Democratic party told us to like the candidate they picked for us or else
\>Fascism is the other option
Mfw
>Democratic party told us to like the candidate they picked for us or else
And they've done this multiple times now and wonder why voter apathy and frustration is growing.
Because I'm currently one of the ones who is winning, and I worry that might not be the case after a reboot.
No kids ... all I have to do is stay in my current financial bracket for another 40-ish years, and I'm golden. Hopefully AI takes over and exterminates us all sometime shortly after that.
\s (but not really)
I think people need calm down. I don't see what anyone expected to learn from the debate. Both of these guys have been presidents. We have a clear track record of who they are and what kind of presidency they would bring. Are there really undecided voters that will show up in November?
I'd love to switch off every high ranking government official, but my lawyer says that's highly illegal and making any plans to do so could land me a prison sentence.
I need to get a bunch of people together to learn the movements from The OA (tv show) so I can get out of this wacky dimension. It’s too glitchy to fix.
I'm just... mad. At millions of people who will vote for trump. About rich old white men owning the world who refuse to retire and want to control all of our lives as long as they can. About women who support trump, in general. About reasonable voices being silenced by anyone who can lie louder. About our election once again being Jesus v Democracy with little hope of affecting any actual positive change or solving any issues. My own family members will vote for trump. I just don't even want to talk to my mom right now, who is a fox news devotee and believes everything they tell her. I'm terrified for women's reproductive rights, for Ukraine, about the US becoming a legitimate Christian church state with a disgusting felon dictator in charge. About unchecked power by trump, kim, and putin.
Thank you for attending my Ted Talk.
No way! The crazies are the ones with all the guns so if we "reset" you can expect us to drunkenly pull up rolling coal and shooting warning shots to let everyone know we're #1 and aren't accepting any more "illegals" in 'Merca. Especially not the brown ones, the LGBT+ ones, the non-christian ones, and definitely not the tired, poor, huddled masses yearning to breathe free.
Nothing gets accomplished by letting the extremists take control. I'm no fan of the establishment but it's still better than the alternative.
The presidential election candidates Joe Biden and Donald Trump had their first debate today and it was like watching two 6 year old siblings tell on each other to their parents for an hour and a half, except they’re both over 80 years old.
Oh, I'm with you, friend. It just went with the theme better. And yes, shuffling in new blood is the way to change things, but apparently nothing short of a revolution is going to get fresh blood into our highest seats. Coup D'etat.
I used to patch running software at the hexadecimal level. I once changed the editor in VMS to say “wanking” instead of “working”. I just may have edited the wrong executable; would you like me to edit it back??
We're currently undergoing long-term system maintenance. It's difficult to transition to new software while maintaining functionality, and we're approaching a key inflection point that will decide whether the transition has a chance of being successful or not. We appreciate the concern, and there are tough decisions to be made, but we hope that we will be able to make it through without loss of service or democracy.
You know that car that is held together with duct tape and chewing gum, so you leave it running outside the store because you know there's a really good chance that if you shut it off the engine won't start again?
Need to fix a few bugs first.
Cache for the House of Representatives is too small to capture and process the inputs from the large data set. Needs to be increased tenfold and then mapped to scale as the population changes size.
The Senate is incorrectly coded to take inputs from the states rather than the people.
The Constitution shares a similar bug preventing amendments from installing. Needs to change input requirements from 3/4ths of the states to 3/4ths of the people.
Fix those and the other problems should work themselves out in short order.
The majority think there’s nothing wrong with their side. Both sides look at you like you’ve grown a third eyeball when you suggest a third party. It’s like when the help desk says there is a nasty virus and computer is hosed and needs to be reimaged, but the end user refuses to comply because the new image will want to build a wall or support abortion.
Be careful what you wish for.
Just wanted to do a simple reset and now we got Project 2025
Like the Windows update nobody asked for.
The Windows Vista of politics
The Purge and the NFFA here we come!
Real lol
Sorry, the software is no longer supported because it is old and we can’t afford a new one because the rich people bought them all.
Guess you are going to have to go back to punch cards. On the plus side for you, your elected representatives might actually understand that technology and not try to ban it.
>punch cards Scrolls maybe?
If you go too far back you risk hitting the Antikythera Mechanism which is clearly too advanced.
Like…a series of tubes?
>and we can’t afford a new one because the rich people bought them all. Just like Nvidia graphics cards huh?
“It’s all in the game” -Omar
"It's in the game" -EA Sports
Tubes and core memory. None of your fancy cards whippersnapper.
Isn't there an OpenSource variant?
Yep. If we switch it off now, it might not restart.
We tried during the pandemic, and people lost their damn minds.
Decommissioning is totally okay
The US constitution is basically legacy code.
Didn't work do you have a bowl of rice
We'll get 5/7 swing states with rice!
My dudes, at this point electing a golden retriever would be a better option.
What are you talking about? Electing a golden retriever is ALWAYS preferable to a politician.
Air bud is that you?
I'm in the UK and we have an election coming up next week. I'm voting for the lettuce.
Count Binface demands your vote!
Good luck finding a 35 year old dog.
That’s only 5 years old in dog years :)
But would the supreme court agree with the conversion? I think someone would file that question, since there isn't a rule specifying that the president has to be human.
Depends on who the dog is running for.
The counter argument would be :"Wuff."
Can't argue with that!
Ah, ruff. Just the way your mother likes it
This sounds like another Air Bud sequel...
It’s actually less. According to the American Kennel Club, 15 human years equals the first year of a medium-sized dog’s life. Year two for a dog equals about nine years for a human, and after that, each human year would be approximately five years for a dog.
The President only has to be 35? I thought they had to be 70!
It is 70, that’s why Obama had to fake his birth certificate. /s because this is reddit…
I don't see anything in the rules that's says a golden retriever can't be president
I’m sure there is something that disqualifies a golden retriever.
Age minimum. Also depends on whether the Court would define 'person' loosely or strictly. And whether one could argue that dogs hold citizenship.
Air Bud for President!
but can the golden retriever play golf? can it hit the ball really far.
Won‘t carry the swing states with a handicap over 10!
We need a good boy to lead the country.
I mean, there's no law stating a golden retriever can't be president.
There’s a mountain town near me called Idyllwild, California and their mayor is a Golden Retriever
What's more, he has won multiple mayoral elections back to back and the stability has apparently done the town wonders.
Would much rather have a golden retriever than golden sneakers
In Austria we would say voting vor a red or blue painted fire hydrant would make no difference in this election...
The fire hydrant would be the best choice in a three way race with Biden and Trump.
>at this point electing ~~a golden retriever~~ even Cthulhu would be a better option.
Why vote for the lesser of two evils?
Agreed. Let’s see what Mr. Peanutbutter is up to, I’m sure he’d run if we asked.
We won’t vote third party for some reason, it truly bottles the mind. Everyone is obsessed with winning like it’s some kind of game.
What about Oogway?
Well a city did it so we can as a country. ;) https://youtu.be/7AWNu4CZhzk?si=uSXjb4gwpq0SBlR6
Would support.
Switching it off would not be a big deal. The problem is that the breaker is so old that if we try to switch it back on, it might start a fire that may or may not burn down the entire neighborhood and the embers may or may not spread across the lake.

Where’s the fucking warranty….. looks at Britain 👀(who is also currently on fire)
Let's burn down together
Apple doesn’t fall far from the tree
I think even the people of Britain are looking at the USA thinking “well at least things could be worse”
I think “unbearable” is the perfect word for the current political climate. Same for the UK too and the rise of far-right rhetoric across Europe.
And sells government secrets to Russia!
Britain: I'll just put that over there with the rest of the fire.
USA definitely is worse than Britain rn. On the 4th of July, some hope will be restored
And Keir’s only 61! Practically a baby by US standards
He looks incredibly young for his age too! I’m a solicitor and I have partners/associates who look older than he does, despite being younger
I just need a factory reset.
How long will it take to download all of the updates though especially when out of box version is so many versions out of date?
But we also need to realize that WE have to do something — there isn’t going to be a patch released
Yes, please. If that doesn't work, we should soak it in rice
You do understand how expensive a bowl of rice is now!
I have 15kg of rice I can donate, gotta pay shipping across the Pacific though.
You do understand how much shipping is now!
Lemme bust out the canoe
Haha, I don’t have to buy the canoe do I?
I'll borrow one from the neighbours
Do you have any idea how expensive neighbours are now?!
The damn neighbours are ruining the economy!
Didn't Amazon buy and reboot the series?
No the neighbors live in the Amazon. They have ruined the economy by hoarding all the canoes.
Well one of them is a Manchurian candidate
Forget that, an asteroid strike would nice any day now.
Can it at least be a small one though, so that Mexico and Snow Mexico will be alright.
Snow Mexico 👍
Accurate 😩
Giant Meteor 2024
Problem is we can only choose Mac or Windows
There is always Kennedy Linux but nobody wants that because third party OS is for weirdos.
Perot BEOS?
As much as I hate the "bOtH sIdEs" people cause they're mostly just lazy assholes who don't wanna go vote and want to feel self-righteous about it.... Tonight was a huge W for them.
I use Arch btw
You trying to factory reset me back in to slavery?
I think the 1.8.65 version should be fine without having to carry over the legacy data from 1.7.76
Can we at least reset to a time when people have the right to privacy and bodily autonomy. If we’re going back in time…. So like ‘ 1975?
1975 would be good. Then don't elect Reagan and suffer 50 years of tax breaks for the rich and crippling debt. We could take global warming science seriously and be running on clean energy now.
Go back a touch to pre-Nixon. Smother Gingrich, Kissinger, and McConnell while you're at it.

Bonjour, C'est du support technique constitutionnel, Marcel parle. Unfortunately, Constitutional tech support is located in Quebec.
Tried it, didn't work. We need a different OS
Let's make it FOSS this time... please.
I definitely prefer it over the FOSSIL system we’ve been using the last 8 years.
I prefer it over the proprietary, binary-blob, surveillance, ultra-corpo, profit-above-all-else system we've been using since the 1980s. Actual open source governance and resource based economy sounds like a major breath of fresh air.
We don't need a different OS, we need a factory reset. Think we just need to wipe it and reinstall Democracy 1.0.
Technically, we are not a democracy. We are a democratic republic. We vote for people to represent us and vote on our behalf. It just snoozes and doesn’t do a full reset.
In 2020 we were getting all these pop ups about viruses so we installed the antivirus protection. Was that bad?
The virus was quarantined, but now V2 of the virus is trying to install.
It's going to crash in November unless there's a reset.
Because I'm currently one of the ones who is winning, and I worry that might not be the case after a reboot. We need a hard reset
REAAAL
Glad I will be on vacation during Election Day. This cycle is a hot mess and we need a major reset.
I'd love to switch off every high ranking government official, but my lawyer says that's highly illegal and making any plans to do so could land me a prison sentence.
Just leave it off tbh
Can’t, tech support will only allow that if a ticket is written, but their ticketing system is currently down.
Where's the switch?
At this point turn it off, take it out back and go office space on it
Switch off and wait for a bit
I’ve suggested this many times. We’re past that point now.
I think they are turning it off, but it is a slow manual switch
Not even sure if hitting it would reboot it properly anymore
Gotta unplug for a proper reboot.
I would just buy a replacement country but I can't afford it because I spent all my money on health care and student loan payments.

Switching off won't do this time, we need a hardware update
You need a subscription to do that.
I need to get a bunch of people together to learn the movements from The OA (tv show) so I can get out of this wacky dimension. It’s too glitchy to fix.
Please press 1 to vote, press 2 to speak to an operator or press 10 to reset the system

yes omg, i'm in fear for my future... wtf is going on
Nah, just leave it off.
Ha, you think that eternal spite can be turned on and off!
No way! I wish
Good idea. I’ll get the IT guy on it.
as long as someone else flips the switch for you right?
We can’t do that if both candidates are still running on steam
Aloha was our best OS. Toast has been a downgrade
As a European, I'm confused. What's happening over there?
The presidential election candidates Joe Biden and Donald Trump had their first debate today and it was like watching two 6 year old siblings tell on each other to their parents for an hour and a half, except they’re both over 80 years old.
Our corporate overlords wouldn't like that very much
Inb4 great reset theory
They should try it; might fix a few bugs.
Oh, I'm with you, friend. It just went with the theme better. And yes, shuffling in new blood is the way to change things, but apparently nothing short of a revolution is going to get fresh blood into our highest seats. Coup D'etat.
Might wanna claim warranty on this one
This made me laugh so hard
If "restart" takes 4 years then hell yeaaah
Worked in the 1860's should work again
Pg&e is a giant grid system and some have solar so won’t work well nor go fast enough to make us be better.
We already tried that 150 years ago. If we did it today there's about 0 chance there would be a coherent country left behind afterwards.
I think we should take a page from the Oscars and just go forward for the next four years without a president.
Take the French option and go semi-presidential.
Any time I read "French option" it is eather about food or cutting people heads off but this is not one of those times.
That could well happen. We'll know in November.
Lol
We tried that in 2016 and look where it got us!
Yeah they tried that in 1860s but it didn't really work.
Let's elect that fly this year
Just throw it in the trash.
Both were an embarrassment.
We did but when we tried to boot it up again we lost the password and tried 3 times and got locked out. Stupid 2 factor authorization.
I used to patch running software at the hexadecimal level. I once changed the editor in VMS to say “wanking” instead of “working”. I just may have edited the wrong executable; would you like me to edit it back??
Can we switch off taxes for a year or 2 as well ?
We're currently undergoing long-term system maintenance. We appreciate the concern, and there are tough decisions to be made, but we hope that we will be able to make it through without loss of service or democracy.
Legitimately good advice
Bear or old man? I think you know the answer
I mean, by most metrics we are headed towards collapse.
Great idea! Let's do that, except we don't turn it back on.
We tried but everyone keeps flicking the switch 3 times before trying to reset, however we aren’t smart bulbs, so it’s not working :(
You know that car that is held together with duct tape and chewing gum, so you leave it running outside the store because you know there's a really good chance that if you shut it off the engine won't start again?
