Yep. My daughter always complained when she was little that as soon as we went into a book shop I'd be doubled over and rushing her because I wasn't sure I'd make it to the loo!!
Mechanic shop, tire warehouse, and auto parts stores! Yes I agree. I know part of it is nostalgia but I loved it even when I worked in parts and was new to the business.
Ha, I was in high school and watched Fast Times at Ridgemont High and wondered why all the students smelled the paper when they were distributed in class. My dad told me this reason.
The faint aroma of cigarettes in places like the city or an amusement park, often mixed with overwhelming cologne or perfume. Makes me feel like some weird shit is about to go down.
Death. In Bosnia I once slept in a hotel room that had super sweet floral notes in the air, but it was also thick and heavy. I liked it so much. My now husband though really did not like the smell and even got a bit nauseous. He went investigating and found a giant bloated dead rat under our bed.
So...
I think you're the only one who understood the "assignment" lol all other comments are very mild but I, like you, have some *really* weird smells that i like
As is Reddit tradition, of course.
- Q: What gross scent do you actually like?
- A: Vanilla air fresheners
- Q: Name a celebrity that everyone likes but you hate
- A: Steven Seagal
Had a horse, can confirm! I always felt like horses were relatively "clean" farm animals- cow manure? Gross. Chickens/ducks/birds? Stinky. Horses? Practically perfumed.
Yup, lemon lysol, pinesol etc. Something about the combo of a "natural" scent (citrus/pine) mixed with the harshness of the chemical aroma is refreshing
The smell of cold stale cigarette smoke from a hotel air conditioner gives me a little nostalgia dopamine hit.
I could be at a highway motel in Iowa for work but for a second if I get that scent I'm taken back to the beach on vacation with my thrifty parents in 1998.
You know those candles that are like "Grandma's Kitchen" and they smell like cinnamon and clove or some shit? My sister and I joke that our South Philly Italian "Grandma's Kitchen" candle would smell like cigarettes, tomato sauce, and anise. That's exactly what her kitchen reeked of. It was the most unique combination that I can still smell in the decades since she's passed.
That’s funny, a freshly lit cigarette reminds me of my dad lighting one up while driving with him in the car while I was a kid in the 80’s. I never smoked, hate the smell of it once it’s been smouldering beyond that. But that first light always takes me back. He’s been smoke-free 16 years now, loving retirement.
Yep....
Or cigarette smoke, on a summer evening...having drifted about 15 feet off of the cigarette of the guy ahead of u on the sidewalk. I used to smoke, but I loved this way back when I was a kid, and neither of my parents ever smoked. Not just nostalgic....there's something more to it.
I don't smoke, but love the smell of cigarettes. When someone is smoking close to me they usually apologize and think I'm just being polite when I say I'm enjoying it
Not always. I’ve been known to run myself out of a room. If I fart, then get up to leave, you better believe everyone else in the room is also about to leave too 🤣
Some farts are good, with a healthy smell. Some come out like the fires of gehenna, and you question wtf you ate to produce such a hot, burning air blast. Then the smell hits and you are certain you sold your asshole to the devil. Those do not smell good. I have offended myself with them before.
Growing up in the tropics, anyone is shamed for smelling like a combination of sweat and prolonged stay in the sun.. but for some reason I like how it smells. maybe it reminds me of childhood when I used to play all afternoon outside in the fields and climbing trees.
Fun fact, if you’re not repelled by someone’s body odour, you’re probably genetically compatible with them if you were to have kids together. (As in you lack things genetically that they have and vice versa)
There is a shop in St. Charles, Missouri that has the old books scent available to mix for candles or room spray. I’ll mix old books, leather, and cedar for a home library scent. It’s lovely.
Omg we used to have this old Roses chocolate tin, but it was tall. We kept all of our colouring pencils in it and I used to LOVE opening it and taking a big sniff 🤣 my parents thought I was really weird but I can still smell it now if I think about it
For me it's more specifically the smell of a freshly extinguished match or candle! Took me time to actually like having a candle lit, but boy do I like the smell from blowing one out.
I loved the smell of my dogs feet. The bottom of her paws. Smelled like popcorn to me. I read somewhere that dogs have scent glands on their feet. IDK, whatever it was I loved it.
The lingering smell of house paint after the walls have been re-painted.
Also the smell of stale oil, it is probably considered rancid but something is comforting about the smell of it that I can’t describe.
I’ve always loved the smell of my boob sweat. Someone once said if you like the smell of your own body order, it means you’re healthy. Not sure if that’s true, but I’ll take it.
Do your doctors know you sweat maple? Obviously it hasn't set you back much if you're here, but that's an alarming smell to come out of your baby because it is associated with a genetic disease. Might want to look into it.
Do they specifically know you smell like maple? Because if not, you should tell them. Though I would like to think the team would have noticed the smell themselves in urine samples, on your person over the years, doctors misdiagnose and miss stuff ALL THE TIME. They're only human and biological systems are complicated. Can't hurt to mention it. Might be able to get some more wellness out of avoiding the proteins that are hard to digest with this disorder.
Wishing you good health and fun chasing your wife around with your own personal stink!
I think they smell like heavily buttered movie theater popcorn. Not a gross smell to be working with, but I don’t think I was able to eat popcorn for at least the first year of my kid’s life due to the smell.
I have a 1969 Impala that I've stripped to the body to restore. Classic cars always have "an aroma" that can best be described as a combo of aging vinyl/plastic, grease, gasoline, dampened carpet, and hot steel. It's one of my favorite smells- I always breathe it in a few times when the car comes out for more updates, but I guess some might call it "musty" or just plain unpleasant.
Toenail gunk.
Seriously.
I know what you’re thinking.
But go ahead, and next time you are trimming your toenails, take a huff of one. Sometimes if you run your finger under your toenail a bunch you can get a good scent on your finger.
The animal facility where I work smells strongly of the animals, and most people complain about it. However, I love it. There's a comforting familiarity to it, having worked with animals for nearly 20 years.

The smell of a library often has a laxative effect on people
It's all that fiber in the paper
It’s called the Mariko Aoki phenomenon.
Gesundheit
Yep. My daughter always complained when she was little that as soon as we went into a book shop I'd be doubled over and rushing her because I wasn't sure I'd make it to the loo!!
I get that with libraries, antique stores and empty apartments. I have to immediately find a bathroom and it's always number two.
Really? I used to take my son to baby time at the library and without fail, every time, he’d crap his dacks. I thought he was just trying to get away.
That’s me. I thought I was the only one. Also I didn’t know it was the smell but that makes sense.
*scents 🙃
Wait is this a thing? Is it because it’s so damn relaxing in there that it relaxes your bowels? 😂
Try working in one. It’ll stop you right back up. Source: Have been a public librarian for 17 years.
Yes. I can smell it now.
Mmmm Yes, Legionella

New tires!
I used to pump gas for my mom. Back in the 80s. I liked the smell of gasoline. I dunno.
Yeah i love that burnt oil smell, its awesome

You mean the smell of warming coils slowly burning the accumulated detritus of six to nine months?
No, the burnt smell
of spiders or insects that got lost in there?
And their webs.
That’s burning dust… usually a mix of fabric fibres and skin cells… you enjoy the smell of burning plastic and old school executions
the smell of freshly burnt plebeians just hit different
I hope your toasted proles are ethically sourced.
Mine is the opposite. I love it when the AC kicks on and it smells like cold, musty basement.
Before photocopiers, they used a machine with a handle to create copies - we all used to inhale the papers when we got them
Ditto
Ditto machines! Loved them! The paper was warm, too!
Mimeograph? Lol. I loved that stuff
The purple writing...
Ha, I was in high school and watched Fast Times at Ridgemont High and wondered why all the students smelled the paper when they were distributed in class. My dad told me this reason.
So that's not a smell that people normally find disgusting? Since everyone did it?
I'm a little bit of a weirdo, but I love the smell of fresh baked cookies!!
You’re sick
We called them stencils, I think mimeographs might be the correct term. I loved that smell too
EVERYBODY loved that smell. Only thing that made a pop quiz enjoyable.
WD-40
Found my guy… let’s be friends
I don't know one person who dislikes it

you understood the post 😭
After reading the two first words of your post, "death" and "Bosnia" I was fearing something more terrible than a rat.
yeah i almost stopped reading lol
Are you a vulture
I think you're the only one who understood the "assignment" lol all other comments are very mild but I, like you, have some *really* weird smells that i like
As is Reddit tradition, of course. - Q: What gross scent do you actually like? - A: Vanilla air fresheners - Q: Name a celebrity that everyone likes but you hate - A: Steven Seagal
I recommend a corpse plant flower for you.
Yeah wow that's different. Can't imagine a lot of people would like that. We're basically hardwired to dislike that smell for our own protection.
Do you also enjoy the smell of napalm in the morning? 😜
ok what the fuck lol
My kids like the smell of the nail polish salon
I also like that smell. Even when painting my nails at home I love the smell
I really love the smell of horses, manure and all! It feels so familiar, perhaps I was a horse in a past life lol
Or a stable girl who has a tryst with the Lord of the manor.
Or a lord of the manor who has a tryst with a horse.
Had a horse, can confirm! I always felt like horses were relatively "clean" farm animals- cow manure? Gross. Chickens/ducks/birds? Stinky. Horses? Practically perfumed.
Freshly spread dung on a field ,ready for tha crops. Preferably ,whilst I'm out of range of machinery spreading the dung.
Yeah, that’s the shit.
Come to Wisconsin, smell our dairy air!
Lol I like that you specify fresh turds but not close enough to REALLY smell it
Well there's physical contact ..... ....... then there's did you fart.
Warehouses. The concrete floor really adds something to it. Also wood! The lumber section at Home Depot is top tier.
who finds the smell of wood disgusting though
*"Am I the only one who likes the smell of coffee?"*
100% Petrol
This but everytime you go into these threads, the top answer is also this. So who really hates the smell of it?
Benzene isn't called aromatic hydrocarbon for nothing.
Me. One of the worst smells ever.
Two-stroke just hits different

Chlorine
Smells like cleanliness
Smells like a swimming pool!
The fresh and nostolgic smell of entering a swimming pool area on a hot summer day.
Cleaning disinfectant
Yup, lemon lysol, pinesol etc. Something about the combo of a "natural" scent (citrus/pine) mixed with the harshness of the chemical aroma is refreshing
Yess I love it!
The smell the vacuum gives off out its vent when vacuuming. Maybe I’m just weird 😅😂
Yeah, that smell is called "warmed dust and carpet plastics"
No no... I definitely like the smell too haha! Reminds me of childhood for some reason
Hahah agree 100%, as soon as I get a whiff of the vac I’m 10 again
The sulfur smell after fireworks in the summer.
On a similar note, the phosphorus smell after a match is struck
I thought "the sulfur smell" was going to be talking about another kind of fireworks 😂💨
The smell of cold stale cigarette smoke from a hotel air conditioner gives me a little nostalgia dopamine hit. I could be at a highway motel in Iowa for work but for a second if I get that scent I'm taken back to the beach on vacation with my thrifty parents in 1998.
Seeing smoke float in the sunlight and smelling stale pall malls. I miss my grandma.
You know those candles that are like "Grandma's Kitchen" and they smell like cinnamon and clove or some shit? Bleach. Most people think it smells too strong, but I kind of like it.
It's not clean if it doesn't smell like bleach.
Cigarette smoke really floods my brain with a weirdly comforting feeling
I smoke so I can't smell it often but when I do it reminds me of my mom when I was a kid.
When it's cold outside and you get into the car and cigarette smoke is lingering in the cold car.
I don't smoke, but love the smell of cigarettes. When someone is smoking close to me they usually apologize and think I'm just being polite when I say I'm enjoying it
Rotorua Bro 🤙
Vinegar. Smells clean AND like food
Skunk
Same! Reminds me of good weed!
My feelings about skunk smell totally changed when I started smoking weed 😆
I love skunk smell. But from a distance. When you’re close to it and it’s fresh it smells like burnt up gear oil.
My farts, I love them but others don't seem to be as impressed
Farts are like children , you can tolerate only yours.
Not always. I’ve been known to run myself out of a room. If I fart, then get up to leave, you better believe everyone else in the room is also about to leave too 🤣

Yeah, and sooner or later you just have to let them go.
Mine come back years later and try to borrow money with some sob story. I just open a window and ignore them till they dissipate.
There’s a science to this I think
finally. I think this is the only true answer.
Everyone likes the smell of their own brew.
I can’t believe I had to scroll this far for this 😂 I was like am I going to have to be the one who writes my own farts?!
Basement/moldy smell. I just love that fresh scent of going downstairs and getting hit by wet/mold/earthy vibes
PSA: if every 3rd comments says "Petrol" then it's probably not something most others find disgusting.
Body odor. Some people smell great
Growing up in the tropics, anyone is shamed for smelling like a combination of sweat and prolonged stay in the sun.. but for some reason I like how it smells. maybe it reminds me of childhood when I used to play all afternoon outside in the fields and climbing trees.
Fun fact, if you’re not repelled by someone’s body odour, you’re probably genetically compatible with them if you were to have kids together. (As in you lack things genetically that they have and vice versa)
You would love the slums of Paris then
Old books! If I could bottle that aroma...
There is a shop in St. Charles, Missouri that has the old books scent available to mix for candles or room spray. I’ll mix old books, leather, and cedar for a home library scent. It’s lovely.
Do they have a website?
I don't think anyone finds the smell of old books disgusting.
The smell of pencil sharpener shavings
Not that most people even notice, but I get you. Upvote.
Omg we used to have this old Roses chocolate tin, but it was tall. We kept all of our colouring pencils in it and I used to LOVE opening it and taking a big sniff 🤣 my parents thought I was really weird but I can still smell it now if I think about it
Matches

The smell of fresh gutted fish on display in the supermarket. The ones that sit on top of ice. Makes me act up, I tell you.
Finally an answer worthy of the question in the post. You’re disgusting and I salute you for it
That’s heinous
Sharpie Marker
Mechanic shop smell. I love it

My dog's feet! They smell like corn chips to me.
I wonder if this is a harmless fungal infection, like what cats can get. I call it Doritoes.
I loved the smell of my dogs feet. The bottom of her paws. Smelled like popcorn to me. I read somewhere that dogs have scent glands on their feet. IDK, whatever it was I loved it.
Ah the ol frito foot
We call it Fri-toes
Musty basements. It's a nostalgic childhood smell- maybe that's a bad thing, oh well.

Do your doctors know you sweat maple? Obviously it hasn't set you back much if you're here, but that's an alarming smell to come out of your baby because it is associated with a genetic disease. Might want to look into it.
I’m fine I am disabled and constantly at the doctor so if it was something they would’ve found it, I’m just Canadian.
Do they specifically know you smell like maple? Because if not, you should tell them. Newborn breastfed poos. Yeah it’s gross but I know I’m not the only one. Would I buy a candle of it? No. But it just triggers lovely warm memories.
I think they smell like heavily buttered movie theater popcorn. Not a gross smell to be working with, but I don’t think I was able to eat popcorn for at least the first year of my kid’s life due to the smell.

My own farts. Sometime I’m really proud when a new fart nuance emerges. Like, wow. I would have liked to frame this fart in some kind of fart frame.
I was looking for this and you didn't dissappoint
Hospitals. They don’t smell like they used to, I think it is the smell of surgical spirit, which I love.
Skunk, it reminds me of good weed.
As long as you're not too close. Lol. Love it
Human male genitals. Edit: Lol, I like how one of my most popular posts of the night was about sniffing penis.
Depends on the person?
Mostly just cleanliness. I didn't mean dirty, lol.
Dettol. Horses.

same love durians smell
It’s an addictive smell.
It's a strong smell, but very fragrant for me. Always makes me hungry!
Cattle trucks and feedlots - smell like money. Diesel exhaust. Horses.
Surstromming- Swedish fermented fish. Have it every year when I go over there and really like it. It’s famously vomit inducing to the non initiated
Sticky pub floor. It reminds me of the night I went out to watch the Brazil game during the 2014 World Cup. Brilliant atmosphere.
The smell of menstrual blood.
This is a first.
