Actually in my city in WA state it's 10.1% but food isn't taxed, food you prepare. But restaurant food is and there's an extra sugar beverage tax in Seattle which is in stares and restaurants, any drink with sugar, even like apple juice. It's silly so I don't shop in Seattle often.
I saw it described recently as not a tax on the poor or stupid, but rather as a tax on the desperate. I think even the most ignorant people know that you lose on the whole, but lots of people see no way of advancing in life other than the 1-in-100 million chance of hitting a big score.
I gamble on sports as a hobby. Nothing too crazy, but at least there I can make an informed decision vs hoping my numbers match the random numbers. I'll never strike that big of a pay day for what I do vs the lottery, but at least I can win *something* worthwhile.
For the most part, yes. But there is a lower to middle class subsection of people who only buy lotto tickets a few times a year when the jackpots are ridiculously high. We know we won't win, but SOMEONE has too, and for a few bucks, it's nice to dream about all of the wonderful things we could do with that money. That's all.
About winning the lotto, my mother used to say "It won't solve all your problems, but I am *READY* for some **new** problems." She would by five tickets when it was really high, like maybe 3 times a years. I said to her once, "if you won you would have to move immediately." And she said "You wouldn't really have to move. Just take your photos and maybe your favorite dress and lock the door behind you." Until that moment I had not realized that, yes, there was not a stick of furniture in my house that I would bother and move if I won millions of dollars. Clearly she had given it some thought.
Smart Mom there!!
I have some antiques that are 3rd gen heirlooms, and some cookbooks...but yah! that's an interesting concept, I like her thinking there.
I mean, TONS of people in the US buy Powerball tickets practically by the gross when the jackpot is high. Go to any corner store in a poorer neighborhood during one of these times and you'll see lines of people waiting to drop hundreds in cash on tickets
Today, someone came into my store and bought $140 worth of meba millions. Can confirm. Over the year I've worked at a gas station (last day today! I'm free I'm free!) I had people dropping hundreds on lotto tickets. Sometimes on mega millions or Powerball but even more so on scratch offs. Had one guy who would regularly spend hundreds, and another who would come in once in a blue moon (he traveled for work) and drop thousands. He would just wipe out our case of scratchers. He was not a poor man though, I'd say "I wonder why a rich man wants so many tickets" but the answer is probably he has a gambling addiction
Desperation makes people do crazy things, and too many people in our society live in a constant state of financial desperation. Obviously addiction as well.
Many of the scratch tickets these days are $5, $10 and $20 each. Why throw away money a dollar at a time when you can screw yourself in multiple increments?
My son and I spend $5 each every paycheck, so $20 a month. Its more for the fun of it. Pick up pizza or Chinese and grab a couple scratchers and candy bars at the liquor store next door. However, this year on my birthday, my $5 scratcher won $500!! So he got a couple new games and I bought us tickets to a baseball and a hockey game. Just thought I'd share our fun story.
It's the people who spend $100 on scratch tickets and don't win anything but then hop in their car with bald tires is the problem.
If you have $20/month you don't need and get enjoyment from it I am all for it.
I buy them very rarely. I will say, when I do buy one, I usually get a $10 or $20 ticket, because I have had better results. But I live in a small town with a Cumberland Farms, and there are people who I think try to make a living through scratchers. They buy, like, 50 tickets, co to their car and scratch them off, turn in whatever they won, and buy as many scratchers as they can. They will be there for 4-5 hours sometimes, along with people playing Keno.
October 3 1985 - that's the day scratcher tickets became available in California
At lunch I went across the street to the market & bought 20 tickets @ $1 each
2 of the tickets paid back $2 apiece & 1 ticket paid off for $5
Since then I've bought random scratchers here & there - not more than 5 at a time & probably not more than twice a year ... that $9 I won on the first day was the only money I ever "won" from scratchers
My wife and I do this with our can recycling money. It never comes to more than $10 or so month, but it’s a fun way to give the state government their can deposits back. Haven’t won big yet, but maybe one day
They got a 100 dollar one and the cashier dude says they sell a lot of em. I spend like 5 or 10 bucks just to see and hate when I lose. I can only imagine losing a hundred instantly
Wow.. $100 for a scratch ticket. I can't imagine ever thinking, "I want to buy 1 of those."
I like to buy power ball or mega millions when it gets to $500,000,000. I buy one quick pick and talk about all the things my son and I would do if we won and then when I don't win I was happy to have the conversation and life goes on as it was and I'm still happy.
They've arrived here in Greece.
Last week one said slowly to me "you speak very good English".
Now being born, raised and educated in England, with an English accent my brain just said "what?"
I know lmao. It's the basis of "how to spot a russian" guide book. Lmao.
Is there any reason? It's not like it's even a new trend. Are they that comfortable?
Yeah. I think I saw one for sale in a mall when I was a teen in the 90's and was like wtf Adidas made joggers?
I would buy one but wanna know what the deal is. Every country has their clothing, I honestly appreciate it.
There's a cheap 98c one at Walmart that I've used my entire life. I'm not spending $10-20 on the digital ones when the cheap one tells me the same thing
Funny enough, the digital ones work in exact same way but have additional colour sensor which displays pregnant if second line appears and vice versa, scam at its best.
Do they even have parking meters anymore? In Seattle you pay by the hour and before COVID it was $12 an hour. Now it's probably like $50 cuz you know, it's really rent
In the us all cans that say $0.99 are still supposed to be $1. Anything being sold for over $1 is likely to not have the price stamped on it which are created for stores to sell at other price points. And any claims of $1.29... well I'll just leave this here...

I don’t know where they are talking about, but I can confirm that I was in Mexico City recently and you can get a great Taco there for under $1. Small, but great.
India, we also have free low quality healthcare cheap education that's hard to get into (especially if you aren't a reserved minority), but expensive private colleges are about 30K$ too. Though medicine is more expensive and can cross 100K
food can be even cheeper if you're not in a city/are someone that gets subsidies/are from the army.
Laos is the same i could get a pack of smokes and 2 drinks for a dollar. Even better i could get a bowl of soup and a coke for .75 a full dollar would be a tip. Im sure times have changed in 10 years tho.
I used to work with a guy who was from Laos! This was my second job out of high-school maybe 8 years ago but he left such a lasting impression on me. I often wonder where he is now, he went by Patrick, not sure what his birth name was but he shared so much of his culture with me in such a short time. I would often ask him questions about his country and their culture. He would answer ever single one, he would even bring extra food in his lunch cause he wanted me to try the food of his country! I remember it tasting so good! And the stories he would tell of the memories he had were some of the best.
Patrick wherever you are I want to thank you I hope you're doing well and I hope you got to re-visit your home.
There is a sketchy $1 NYC pizza joint down the street and you get that authentic NYC flavor in that it tastes like pure tapwater and scraps of cheese left over from the last person who ate there.

like you cant ever buy anything for $1 or just that its rare?
Swedish guy here.
Here its basically the same, $1 = 10 Sek
But in some places you can find cheap ice cream.
And if you make the dollar 1.5 dollars you can buy some milk.
Haven't seen them below 1.4 dollars for years. You might be able to find one if you go to the right places, but certainly not the general or most popular stores.
I know a place where you can get mini fuzes for use in vehicles for that price. It's because the owner gets them by the crate and sells them as single pieces. Of course, if you don't use the exact type you will need more than a dollar.
My dad gave me a one-dollar bill
‘Cause I’m his smartest son,
And I swapped it for two shiny quarters
‘Cause two is more than one!
And then I took the quarters
And traded them to Lou
For three dimes– I guess he don’t know
That three is more than two!
Just then, along came old blind Bates
And just ‘cause he can’t see
He gave me four nickels for my three dimes,
And four is more than three!
And I took the nickels to Hiram Coombs
Down at the seed feed store,
And the fool gave me five pennies for them
And five is more than four!
And then I went and showed my dad,
And he got red in the cheeks
And closed his eyes and shook his head –
Too proud of me to speak!
falafel shawarma
3 bottles of water
6 packets of oman potato chips( lays sucks in comparison to this, was our jam as a kid)
Packet of gum
lychee drinks
chocobar ice cream (not 1 not 2 but 3)
This is the shit u can get for 1 $ in the place where i live. This is what we used to get after school
One kilo Mango.
Sitting here crying having to pay at least 5$ for a good mango
Oh!
stupid greedy mango corporations
Where is this??
Add $0.25 more and you can get that in Egypt.
I go to Egypt!
Haha, careful what you wish for 😬
I like mango
This man's sole purpose is mangoes, his motivation, his fuel, mangoes. It is admirable the lengths he will go for mangoes *sheds tear*
*sheds single mango*
Probs india because that's rather accurate. You could also buy a decent South Indian dinner for that much
Like one kilogram of mangos or one really big mango?
It’s a numerical unit; one kilomango = 1,000 mangoes (unless you’re paying electronically, then it’s 1,024 mangoes).
Ha I see what you did there
Depends on the type of mango. If expensive, it’s 3$ for a kilo
Ramen
This was the only thing I can think of lol, or a $1 scratcher.
Arizona tall teas
Not here :) like $1.10 ish
Tax always makes it over $1
What state are you in? Michigan has no tax on food and no bottle deposit on non carbonated drinks
$1.09 Western Washington. I wish there was no tax on it
The price is on the can! Edit: https://youtu.be/JUc3wpDRiXM It’s a fake commercial from FX Atlanta
We can get five packs for a dollar here. 20 cents each. Though you do have to account for tax too.
No tax on food in WA state!!
You're lucky. The sales tax in my area is 9 cents on the dollar.
I live in Oregon, there is no taxes on anything you buy, food, toys, cars, boats.
Delaware is like that too. I live in Philly and people here go to Delaware to buy things like TVs and engagement rings.
I thought you were talking about actual real ramen for a second there, I was about to move.
I got cheap taste lol I actually prefer the cheap 20 cents variety
Hope and Disappointment in the form of a lottery ticket.
Can only win small peanuts with a dollar now, megamillions and powerball tickets are $2.00 now.
$2 is still insanely cheap from my perspective. A powerball ticket in New Zealand is $12.
Who the fuck would play for 12 dollars
Poor people. Lottery is tax on the poor.
I saw it described recently as not a tax on the poor or stupid, but rather as a tax on the desperate. I think even the most ignorant people know that you lose on the whole, but lots of people see no way of advancing in life other than the 1-in-100 million chance of hitting a big score.

Shit ton more fun too even if you do lose.
It's escapism. You buy a ticket you can dream all day about what you would do. That's worth $12, cheaper than booze and other forms
Also a good and apt description-
For the most part, yes. But there is a lower to middle class subsection of people who only buy lotto tickets a few times a year when the jackpots are ridiculously high. We know we won't win, but SOMEONE has too, and for a few bucks, it's nice to dream about all of the wonderful things we could do with that money. That's all.

I cried reading this
First time the dollar has been right there with the euro and traveling to Europe might be feasible. Crushing global inflation
Hoooooly 💩 I just checked XE currency for current exchange rate… $1 gets you €0.98!
Brace yourself for loud speaking americans.

A lollipop Edit: six lollipops
My work is worth 23 lollipops per hour.. that's disheartening.
I just got a raise from 15 lollipops an hour to 16.25 lollipops an hour so I'm doing just fine
Certain ones are 2 for a dollar so your work is worth 46 lollipops per hour. Hope this helps.
I know a place where you can get 33 lollipops for a dollar, so you make 759 of those an hour.
I earn 7,356 lollipops in passive income on Amazon each month. Learn more with my free training course...
And then you sell them through your vending machine empire and make another 7,356 lollipops per month.
One beer and two politicians

Funny enough, the digital ones work in exact same way but have additional colour sensor which displays pregnant if second line appears and vice versa, scam at its best.
You can buy bags of 100 for like $10 on Amazon
Yea I even buy 3 to make sure its accurate.
Here in the US dollar stores and stores like Walmart have them for under $1
12 minutes on a parking meter.
Do they even have parking meters anymore? In Seattle you pay by the hour and before COVID it was $12 an hour. Now it's probably like $50 cuz you know, it's really rent

Not any more (in PA they raised the price)
I don't think the company themselves raised it, I think that's just the store doing it
IIRC that's against their policy and there is a number on the can to report stores selling higher than 99c.

A can of beans? Maybe?

There's a meat market that sells $1 tacos and they go hard
Where is that because I'm moving there
I don’t know where they are talking about, but I can confirm that I was in Mexico City recently and you can get a great Taco there for under $1. Small, but great.
Bellingham, WA! It's called Mi Rancho meat market!
And now I have to ask myself if it's worth driving \~100 miles each way for cheap tasty tacos.
What?? That’s close to me!!
8 packet of chips 1 2L bottle of soda 45 min ride in a rickshaw 60 pack of chewing gum edit: lmao its 1 dollar for each of the things in this list.
Damn, where the heck you live that food is that cheap?
India, we also have free low quality healthcare cheap education that's hard to get into (especially if you aren't a reserved minority), but expensive private colleges are about 30K$ too. India right? Taking a conversion factor of 80 it’s true about the chips.
Damn, all of that for a dollar, how?

There is a sketchy $1 NYC pizza joint down the street and you get that authentic NYC flavor in that it tastes like pure tapwater and scraps of cheese left over from the last person who ate there.
I had 2 bros in nyc for $1, its not great pizza but for $1 for a cheese slice it wasn't awful.
Two bros is like the little Caesar’s of NYC. Is it good? Not really? Does it hit the spot when you need to feed 3 people for $5? Yes it does.
The thing is, $3 pizza is not 3 times better than Two Bros pizza.
I can get a Winco (cheap PNW grocery store) pizza slice for $1 between 11-1 on weekdays. Not the best but worth a buck.
Your WinCo sells pizza? Mine didn't.
+1 for winco

Canada... I don't think you can buy anything. Maybe 1/2 a can of pop?
Depends where. They are 75 cents at the drugstore near by.
Woah, not where I am in Ontario.
bottles of pop are 0.87 at dollarama. I assume they’re taxed which would come out to exactly $1 in my province
You can buy a mars bar at the Toronto Dollarama near me for 87 cents. With tax, that's a buck.
