I would think the batteries still cost a lot of ressources and are probably bad for the environment. Maybe even worse than a traditional car with gas

UnderTheRadarGun

Agreed.

Rajendra_Tahamata

Yes But the ev has less emissions over its life span(not considering power source)

TheSwordlessNinja

This is not true. If anything, as they get more range, the worse they are. Maybe manufacturing, sourcing and disposal methods will become more efficient in the future to combat this

UnderTheRadarGun

Mining, transporting, disposal/recycling, and yes charging, all depend on burning fossil fuels. I think the line is negligible difference right now. But it’s part of a longer solution. When we charge them with renewable energy (solar, wind, geothermal) and recycle more of the rare metals than mine them, then they will be part of the answer. We’re doing both right now, transitioning to EV and renewable energy. Just not fast enough. Another great benefit will be disempowering the oil producing nations. Look at how Europe is funding the war right now by giving Russia billions because they are so dependent.

_foolishly

It's worth considering that clean energy is now becoming cheaper to produce than dirty energy (fossil fuels etc) and naturally there will be a push toward it

snowfurtherquestions

They are not emission-free, but even using not-entirely renewable electricity, they have a smaller carbon footprint compared to a gasoline-powered vehicle over time. Fresh from the factory, they start out at a disadvantage, because of the battery manufacture, but after a certain mileage, that is amortized compared to a traditional vehicle.

Constant-Parsley3609

This has nothing to do with belief. They are not carbon neutral today, but have the capacity to become carbon neutral in the future. If everyone drives petrol cars, it's impossible to improve the emissions of those cars, but if everyone drives electric cars their emmisions will improve every year as we reduce the emissions of electricity generation. Basically, it dumps transport emmisions on another sector that we have more control over. Ultimately, if we care at all about burning less fossil fuels, then we need to move away from a society where literally everyone owns their own tiny fossil fuel burner that they can use whenever and as frequently as they like. EDIT: Also, if all the emmisions come out of power plants at least that means that they aren't being produced in the centre of the city, where all the people are.

ComicBookFanatic97

An electric car is just a gas-powered car with extra steps.

snowfurtherquestions

How so? The electricity is not generated using gasoline. On the contrary: gasoline cannot be manufactured without using electricity.

ComicBookFanatic97

I guess I should have said “fossil fuel” instead of “gas”.

fenriq

Renewable energy exists but there's a pretty large cost in making the ev car in the first place. I saw someone recently note that if Elon Musk really wanted to improve the world, he'd be pushing electric bikes, not giant ass super expensive cars.

Brilliant-Road-8231

Power plants do cause the emission of greenhouse gases, but it's still better than the pollutants from internal combustion motors which spit out deadly carbon moxoide. Carbon monoxide is the main reason cigarettes are so deadly, that's why every cigarette box has carbon monoxide warnings on the side.

TheFernburger

Yes. Google the term “carbon footprint”.

NeoNachtwaechter

Of course the power plants need to be considered. 'Electric anything' always needs emission free energy to become emission free.

OfficerLovesWell

Definitely don't think they're emission free based solely on what the process is to mine the materials for the batteries. Dreadful.

bchan123

after 80k miles, the EV probably be better total net emissions. Depends on state/country since some places have more renewable than others

MarcoYTVA

The people who push for electric cars also want fossil fuel plants decommissioned.
