That’s actually not true. Bitters is almost 50% alcohol. The amount of bitters being added to a “soda and bitters” is non-existent, but the ABV of bitters itself is pretty high. I’m a bartender and I would never even consider bitters an option for someone asking for a non-alcoholic beverage. No alcohol means no alcohol.
>as I love both, that's my next drink.
I'd beware. That isn't a foolproof strategy.
For example, I love curry. I love custard. Wouldn't mix them though....
Correct response OP.
A few years ago I’d have said they’re much cheaper than pop too but recently the price has shot up. Now is about the same/slightly cheaper.
I go for this with a dash of bitters added. It makes the drink a bit more interesting and the alcohol content is negligible (they literally just add a few drops)
Thank god I'm not the only one who doesn't know. All I can think is freshly squeezed orange juice but no chance of getting that at a pub so I'm baffled
Good childhood memories of having this on rare occasion wed go cycling with my old man. He was always stressed out working his ass off and to have to come home to chaotic unruly kids made our connection worse. But having this after a nice warm day as we'd been cycling around was a real treat as we'd never have stuff like this at home.
Im gonna make this when i get home from work and give the old man a nod when i call him
Served J2O White Peach & Mango Daiquiri Mocktail cans at a festival and OH MY GOD is it good. I was allowed as many soft drinks as I liked and that J2O was the only drink that kept me off the energy drinks lol :D
Guinness Zero is the first non-alcoholic beer that I've liked as much as the non-alcoholic version. There are a few I find reasonable to drink when I am driving but Guinness Zero is the first where I could choose it over the normal one regardless of needing to stay sober or not.
The only difference is it's somewhat easier to.... Not chug, but get down you quicker? If you get me? It's literally the same thing as the alcoholic one. The only one I can't taste an iota of difference. I drink it between regular beers now and I've been an alcoholic for 17 years. Stick that on a damn advert lol.
Congratulations! :)
I do wish non-alcoholic beer would be promoted more and not be classed as alcohol in supermarkets (ie, not needing to wait at the self-checkout for someone to verify you're old enough and being allowed to use the coupons that exclude alcohol).
If we had a decent range of ales that are as good as Guinness Zero, along with decent prices (they aren't paying the alcohol tax so \*should\* technically be much cheaper than the alcoholic versions), then I could see myself just switching to those all the time. I like these drinks for the taste not the alcohol.
Me and a mate got a 4 pack of reduced apple Koppaberg to split on a trip somewhere in London. First drink each done and we mentioned how nice it tasted.
Only into the second drink did I look and realised we bought non-alcoholic by accident 😂 Honestly it was better than the alcoholic version!
Non-alcoholic ciders are decent, but if I'm going to be drinking something non-alcoholic then just some sort of juice is going to be noticeably better IMO.
I can’t stand any of the low alcohol lagers - too sweet. The IPAs and pale ales are much better thanks to the hops. Big Drop and the brewdog ones are great.
Agreed. I don’t think Heineken is in any way a spectacular beer, but it’s pleasant and inoffensive and the Zero is a really solid clone of the alcoholic version.
A pint of Blackcurrant cordial. Basic but it hits the spot.
Fentimans do some lovely soft drinks, curiosity cola & their dandelion & burdock are amazing.
Kopperberg do a zero alcohol Blueberry cider which is shockingly good. As a alcohol drinker I sometimes get one of those instead of a alcoholic cider.
Don’t dismiss a tomato juice. My main gripe with tomato juice is that it comes, generally, in stupid measures the likes of which Dot Cotton enjoyed. But. A tomato juice (2 if necessary) in a tall glass with a decent amount of ice, Worcester/tabasco sauce at the bottom and top, is absolutely refreshing as hell and it’s a soft drink that you can nurse too.
I used to work on a bar, honestly the mocktails are so unappreciated. They’re so refreshing, taste delicious, look really pretty and it’s a nice way to feel like you’re treating yourself without actually having a cocktail. Most cocktails can be made virgin these days, however my most popular was a passion fruit cooler (half j2o orange, half lemonade) and a sex on the beach mocktail (fresh orange, cranberry & lemonade). Also soda water & cordial, super simple drink but very popular for those wanting something refreshing but alcohol free
I drink non-alcoholic beers but if you've never drunk, you might not have acquired a liking. And ginger beer is good for one, or maybe two (but be careful as there are some alcoholic ones).
Tea. I remember going out years ago in a local pub, the barstaff knew me so well that at a certain point in the night they'd be like "cup of tea here Jim". That was like a "go home, you're drunk".
If I went in with a book, they'd just make me a brew straight away.
Rekorderlig and Kopparberg both have really nice 0% ciders. Old Mout is also particularly good but they're quite uncommon in pubs in my experience, which is a shame. They're basically fancy fruit juice, given the lack of alcohol, but they're really lovely to drink.
Look at the mocktail menu - not all of them are sweet cocktails. But a bit more sophisticated mix of flavours. Not all pubs have though but increasing range do. There are usually 0% beers as well - some better than others. The Guiness not bad. Almost every pub I've been to has J2O in various flavours. If they have gin, they usually have Fentiman's to add to it - some interesting flavours. Sadly often the designated driver as my partner doesn't drive.
I'm a pint of orange juice and lemonade kinda guy. But if you find yourself in a popular independent brewery, you could try for Kombucha, that's lovely
Ginger ale with a dash of lime cordial is pretty good.
Many places do virgin cocktails/mocktails which can be pricy but some are pretty good.
Once in a blue moon I might have an appeltiser before remembering how sweet they are.
Non alcoholic Guinness. Its probably 85% of the taste of boozy Guinness. Now if you have never had Guinness it might not be to your taste. But at least it's different from sugary fruity drinks.
Ginger ale and fresh orange (full mini bottle of ginger ale mixed with half mini bottle of fresh orange in a pint glass)
Initially started as a pregnancy thing, but even my partner really liked it.
If you want alcohol imitation Guinness do a 0%, my dad has stopped drinking (6months clean, health not addiction) and he states Guinness 0 is really really good.
There are some pretty good non alcoholic beers and ciders now. Cider is probably a bit better for someone who has never had beer. But lime and soda or ginger beer are my two favourites when I can't drink.
I love tonic!
Makes me feel like I am drinking something like gin and tonic but without the gin!
Also different flavours to choose from - elderflower, light tonic, cucumber...

Lime and soda
Damn right. On a hot day, alongside the first pint as a refresher.
Blackcurrant and soda
A close second
Fresh lime. Cordial can be too sweet and sickly, especially if they overpour it
Por que no los dos?
You have to be all over them on that shit. If I don’t supervise, they’ll put about 8 times as much cordial as I want! People are crazy!
Yup, exactly!
Ask for some bitters in it.
Bitters has alcohol in it!
Its almost non existent.
Bitters are amazing in sparkling mineral water.
Step it up, admittedly with more empty calories: lime and ginger beer.
Lime and ginger beer? I've not heard of that combination but as I love both, that's my next drink. Thanks for posting!
>as I love both, that's my next drink. I'd beware. That isn't a foolproof strategy. For example, I love curry. I love custard. Wouldn't mix them though....
It's like a Moscow Mule but without the booze parts!
Correct response OP. A few years ago I’d have said they’re much cheaper than pop too but recently the price has shot up. Now is about the same/slightly cheaper.
People are charging for lime and soda? Damn. I never would have dared when I was bartending.
Try £3.75 for a pint of lime and soda! I could not believe it!
£1.35 in my pub - cheapest pint is £6.60 so..
I go for this with a dash of bitters added. It makes the drink a bit more interesting and the alcohol content is negligible (they literally just add a few drops)
Add a splash of cranberry juice!
Fresh orange and lemonade, pint glass, plenty ice, slice of fresh orange.
Came on here to say this. The best on a hot day and bizarrely feels like a treat even though I could easily do it at home…but I don’t
It's called a St. Clements, after the nursery rhyme about the churches in London.
So it's not named after Pam?
Pam was named after the drink.
It’s really not called that. A St Clements is fresh orange and bitter lemon mixed. I used to drink it regularly.
What? My Nan always called it a Henry, and that's what I've called it forever.
Henry to me too.
What's an orange juice and bitter lemon called?
It should be bitter lemon or sparkling water for st Clements. Otherwise it's just orange juice and lemonade.
That is what a St Clements used to be called afaik.
St Clements is bitter lemon and orange juice, not lemonade and orange juice.
Yep, this is what I was going to say. So good
Me too - definitely the best drink
I had this after I’d just played a gig in a really sweaty live room and it absolutely drop kicked my thirst into next week.
No ice for me, but this is also my choice!
This hands down. Sink these bad boys till the cows come home.
What’s fresh orange? Canadian who wants to try this.
Thank god I'm not the only one who doesn't know. All I can think is freshly squeezed orange juice but no chance of getting that at a pub so I'm baffled
It’s just orange juice. Usually it will be on fraught but some places will give you a small glass bottle
Ginger beer!
ginger beer with lime!
And mint
And rum
And my axe
r/unexpectedgimli
Fentimans is a fiery treat!
Ah I’m an Old Jamaica man myself!
Bundaberg for me. In a stubby bottle, it feels like a real beer alternative.
Get a couple dashes of bitters thrown is a real treat.
yes yes my guy. you can actually order it as a Gunner in hong kong and some other countries, ginger ale+ginger beer+ bitters, best summer drink
Appletiser
I used to think Appletiser was so posh when I was a kid. It was a total rip off
What is appletiser? I've always wanted to try it but never did in bad I didn't like it
Fizzy apple drink. Basically apple juice that’s been carbonated.
J2O is good and is likely in most pubs!
I second this, but with added lemonade - haven’t found a place that won’t serve it and it’s super refreshing!
Why would they not serve it? 😂
"Don't do cocktails pal"
J20 reminds me of my childhood 10/10 drink
Served J2O White Peach & Mango Daiquiri Mocktail cans at a festival and OH MY GOD is it good. I was allowed as many soft drinks as I liked and that J2O was the only drink that kept me off the energy drinks lol :D
Got a Koppaberg Strawberry and Lime 0% recently, that wasn’t bad.
The non alcoholic ciders are all really good. It's rare that I find a palatable low or no alcohol beer, outside of craft ale bars, but ciders are Ok.
Don't forget the Guinness 0% but that's only if you like Guinness tbf.
Yeah, the Guinness is good, but I find it a bit heavy for more than one.
Guinness Zero is the first non-alcoholic beer that I've liked as much as the non-alcoholic version. There are a few I find reasonable to drink when I am driving but Guinness Zero is the first where I could choose it over the normal one regardless of needing to stay sober or not.

Brooklyn special effects and erdingher are great alcohol free beers
Me and a mate got a 4 pack of reduced apple Koppaberg to split on a trip somewhere in London. First drink each done and we mentioned how nice it tasted. Only into the second drink did I look and realised we bought non-alcoholic by accident 😂 Honestly it was better than the alcoholic version!

Corona 0% is so good, agreed
Corona Cero is my favourite NA beer. I’m really really impressed with the leaps and bounds the industry has been making last couple of years.
Blackcurrant and soda.
Erdinger Lemon 0% tastes like an old school shandy, refreshing on a summer's evening
The standard Erdinger Alkoholfrei is also excellent. My one of choice for the zero content beers.
I've been known to order a cup of tea, honestly.
Fiona Harvey? Is that really you?
Whilst busy on your iPhon?
If you like beer, Heineken Zero is a decent shout. Tastes like the real thing in my opinion
Guinness 0 is on the money too
Oh yeah forgot about Guinness 0, I love that too
I can’t stand any of the low alcohol lagers - too sweet. The IPAs and pale ales are much better thanks to the hops. Big Drop and the brewdog ones are great.
Agreed. I don’t think Heineken is in any way a spectacular beer, but it’s pleasant and inoffensive and the Zero is a really solid clone of the alcoholic version.
Grolsh and Peroni do a good 0% too
A pint of Blackcurrant cordial.
Fentimans switched to using mostly sweetener rather than sugar recently.
An upvote for a Dot Cotton reference. I can picture it lol.
My parents drink tomato juice but it feels too much like I'm drinking a pasta sauce.
Mocktails. Or a Guinness Zero is really good.
Guinness Zero is bang on, I was actually convinced I'd been given a real one.
Same. My local opens the can for you but then gives you a glass to pour it yourself, so you know you’ve got Zero.
Virgin pina colada
Coop do an excellent one in a bottle.
Oh, good to know thanks
This would be my shout. Its delicious.
Tonic water with ice and lemon - ie a G&T without the gin.
Lucky Saint
My three year old swears by a fruit shoot
A j20 is basically an adult fruit shoot
I used to work on a bar, honestly the mocktails are so unappreciated. They’re so refreshing, taste delicious, look really pretty and it’s a nice way to feel like you’re treating yourself without actually having a cocktail. I agree with you about mocktails, but they are usually so expensive.
Diet Coke
I drink non-alcoholic beers but if you've never drunk, you might not have acquired a liking. And ginger beer is good for one, or maybe two (but be careful as there are some alcoholic ones).
I love a lemonade and bitters.
Water
Alcohol free strawberry and lime cider!
If you know the right person, coke. Drink it with a straw, through your nose.
Ah the old nose beer
The flavoured fever tree tonic waters are nice on their own, especially the rhubarb or the orange. Refreshing and not super sweet
Cranberry juice and soda water
No alcohol mojito, or a No-jito as some places call it Lemonade, lime, ice, sugar, and mint
Love a virgin mojito!
Tea. I remember going out years ago in a local pub, the barstaff knew me so well that at a certain point in the night they'd be like "cup of tea here Jim". That was like a "go home, you're drunk". If I went in with a book, they'd just make me a brew straight away.

Sparkling elderflower pressé
Diet coke with pork scratchings instead of citrus
Lemon, lime and bitters
Came here for this! The Aussies do it best. In the UK though you have to explain what it is as most places don’t know.
In a pint glass, orange juice, lime & lemonade.
Tonic water with lime cordial
Orange and lemonade is quite refreshing.
Milk
I came here to drink milk and kick ass.
...and I've just finished my milk!
Apple and mango J2O is pretty good.
Oooh Cranberry juice is a pub must for me 🫶🏻
Fentimans cherry cola
Mock tails are always fun for none alcohol drinkers
Look at the mocktail menu - not all of them are sweet cocktails. But a bit more sophisticated mix of flavours. Not all pubs have though but increasing range do. English breakfast tea regardless of the time Of day. Nice roulette to see what teabag you get as well
Acid punch
Rock shandy
Appletiser is elite 👌
I usually do lime and soda. Cheap and cheerful too. If I’m feeling fancy then I’ll get a cranberry and orange juice.
I like an Appletiser, if I can get it. Otherwise, just a coke with loads of ice and lemon. I like to crunch on the ice.
Alcohol free beer
Shirley temples
In a pint glass, apple juice topped up with sparkling or soda water (Apfelschorle)
Ginger beer. The little burn makes you think you might be having an alcoholic drink.
Ginger beer and lime. Used to be my go to drink if I wasn’t drinking.
American beer.
Guinness 0. Never drunk Guinness before but tried it as a zero and quite liked it.
Non alcoholic Guinness. Its probably 85% of the taste of boozy Guinness. Now if you have never had Guinness it might not be to your taste. But at least it's different from sugary fruity drinks.
Soda water and lemonade with a dash of Angostura. With the latter it is not alcohol free, but you’d have to drink barrels of the stuff to be impacted.
J2O is goated
Appletizer
J20
Appletiser is my goto when I'm nor having a pint.
I absolutely love a on tap Pepsi/coke
Gunners
Ginger ale and fresh orange (full mini bottle of ginger ale mixed with half mini bottle of fresh orange in a pint glass) Initially started as a pregnancy thing, but even my partner really liked it.

Tonic. Grapefruit and soda. Fizzy water.
I get a j20 poured into a pint glass and topped up with sods water. It's amazing
St Clements. Half orange juice and half lemonade.
There are some pretty good non alcoholic beers and ciders now. Cider is probably a bit better for someone who has never had beer. But lime and soda or ginger beer are my two favourites when I can't drink.
J2O and redbull mixed together
Tonic water with lime, not lime cordial but a couple of slices of fresh lime squeezed into it.
0% guinness is well nice as an avid guinness drinker
Lime and soda!
Full-fat Coca Cola. Not the diet stuff with artificial sweeteners.
Coke with a slice of lemon and ice
Guiness zero if it's not a trigger
Cool tomato juice chilled w ice.
