That would be where Australia didn't genocide the indigeous population
So basically not any parallel universe where Australia exists as it does currently...
lol, it was sarcasm meant to highlight the sense of futility and lack of spirit in the comment. Even if it ādid not happenā (which I think it did happen), the sentiment of the post is real. Yāall are too grumpy.
I grew up with friends that were indigenous and they're pretty much the same. They do support the invasion day movement but they also ask that we recognize it as such and all move on together.
I'm from outback Qld and worked in child protection for 8 years before coming to Melbourne. I believe Aboriginal people and culture should be celebrated. I think in general Melbournians think the same way, but their depth of interaction with Aboriginal people is missing. Their lack of interaction, growing up and playing as kids with Aboriginal kids and hanging out, there is this fabricated understanding of who Aboriginal people are. There seems to be a belief that Aboriginal people are one dimensional and there is no diversity in opinion or shouldn't be. I think they just see the struggle and I think thats compassionate and important, but Aboriginal people don't always struggle, live lives that have been an example for me particularly on what it is to belong together as Australians
Because the loudest of us are always saying change the date etc etc it weird people out that there are generally alot of aboriginal people who don't have an opinion on the day or just generally like Australia day as a holiday
Just not the day colonisation of there land began is an easy ask, just shows the levels of racism even in our own government. Not many countries on this planet celebrating āNationalā days on the day you invaded a country itās an odd thing to persist at.
Well that wasn't the day though but at least changing t will stop the general public with no idea to stop whinging. Then you'll just have hardcore whingers that want no day but they'll be a tiny minority. A national public holiday on a long weekend sounds great, don't care when but maybe last weekend that School holidays finish on?
The day captain cook made landfall as recorded by him signalling the beginning of colonial Australia, how was that not the day could you educate me further?
For one thing, Australia Day commemorates the landing of the First Fleet, and the setting up of a permanent settlement, in Sydney Cove, in 1788.
Captain Cook arrived 18 years earlier, in April, on the Endeavour.
I don't really see why it would to be honest. The only reason that date is profoundly significant to indigenous people is because Australia Day is celebrated on it.
The invasion day movement didn't exist until the 150th anniversary, and it was rather small until the bicentennial anniversary. It was only after 1988 that it really grew.
The grievance always struck me as being centred on Australia Day itself much more than the 26th of January.
Because they prefer one extreme or the other. The idea of nuance, critical thinking, being two or more people/views on an issue was never done in their family. You do you mate. You seem like a decent parent. Keep it up. šš½
Because no normal cunt talks like āwe should acknowledge our past history but we celebrate our future togetherā unless they think they're gonna be on the telly or in the newspaper. The dialogue in a bloody star wars movie is more human and believable than this quote. I don't doubt that old mate wore this shirt because he liked his shirt and doesn't mind the flag, but the story and the quote just reeks of wanting attention on facebook from aunt Beryl and her lnp mates.
Real or not, it is important to remember the past - such as acknowledging the racist atrocities committed by British colonists against First Nations Australians - while also moving together as a country - namely by closing the gap and giving First Nations Australians the same quality of life and life expectancy that other Australians enjoy.
Thereās no benefit at all to living in blissful ignorance of the worst parts of our country. True patriotism is acknowledging those flaws and working to fix them.
All of it.
Remembering the past is different from holding all members of a specific ethnic group responsible for the actions of their ancestors, though.
So thereās really no reason not to remember atrocities committed against First Nations Australians.
What if I told you of the 56 countries in the Commonwealth, only 4 still use British colonial flags as their national flag (Aus, NZ, Fiji and Tuvula).
The rest retired their old colonial flags to museums decades ago.
It's 2024, time we had a flag of our own.
Exactly!
I couldn't have said it better myself.
The way that the Romans colonised and subjugated British people has created centuries of generational trauma. And we are expected to just carry on and get on with it?
I still haven't received an apology from the Italians, it's sickening.
I didn't say anything about forgetting it, i never will but I want my people and my children to succeed but to do that we need to move on and focus on the future not the past. Are u indigenous yourself?
Says who? I work with all kinds, whether it's Chinese Aboriginal American African and any other race. We all wake up to work a shit job.
Stop projecting what you see online into your life and start living like a normal person.
There Aint any difference between me, you and any other person were all just doing our best out here.
Oh god who would force a man to wear a shirt with the british flag on it. What kind of monster would toture a man like that.
Maby lay of the piss.
No one forced the man to wear that shirt and hes just enjoying his life unlike you.
Whether it happened or not I think this is what should happen. Sure we need to somehow work better with the aboriginal population. The direction at the moment seems to be divisive and creating an australia of two peoples, which ultimately I don't see working.
I mean the media is definitely doing a good job of keeping people distracted so I think until Australia as a nation steps up weāre never going to get passed these points. Sadly weāre nowhere near that so I donāt see anything happening soon.
I know you got downvoted, but you are correct. People who talk about moving forward together are my kind of people - celebrating what we have in common.
"your identity"
Sure, because nothing says proud Aussie like the Union Jack and colours of Britain.
And how exactly does a colonial flag of an empire that no longer exists, look to the future? Explain that.
Well yeah the brits literally brought all the technology to this country and spurred it on and demanded industry shipments of wool back to Britain and made the country what it is today.
What'd you eat for dinner?
What hole did you shit in today?
Bit cold out, how's the wooden tipee holden up?
Etc.
Are you thankful for any of that or do you yearn for simpler times... What's your point?
Being thankful, or if not choosing to dress such a way and rather just making it an iconic display is charming and awesome. So what about what he wants to wear? Why do you hate it?
Iām so over this. Canāt we all just move forward collectively. This whole situation reminds me of your partner always pointing out what youāve done in the past. You can easily break up with a partner, but this whole reparation? When will this end?
Yeah the past is the past can't change it , if it wasn't the English is it would've been the French or who ever else, its not perfect but we still live in the best country in the world
You're aware that the "past" you speak of isn't just english colonisation but everything that came for hundreds of years after right?
The stolen generation is still alive, the last person taken under the scheme was only a few decades ago.
The past isn't the past especially when victims of it are still alive š¤¦āāļø
Yes I do im yorta yorta and I know some of these people, its really fukd up but u can't change it, I'm not going to raise my kids to hate because of it, its not going to change anything is it
It's weird you think any of us are hating for recognising the reality of the injustice.
Like no we can't undo the genocide that happened but we can make sure it's never forgotten so it doesn't ever happen again and we can at least choose a different date to "celebrate" the colonisation especially when Australia came out so loudly and proudly racist last year when it came to issues of first nations rightsš¤¦āāļø
Imagine if Germany had a celebration on the day that Hitler gassed the first Jewish person, it would be ridiculous wouldn't. How is Australia day any different
I didn't say anything about forgetting it, i never will but I want my people and my children to succeed but to do that we need to move on and focus on the future not the past. Are u indigenous yourself?
And everybody clapped.
I donāt give a shit if you call it Australia Day or invasion day, but donāt have a go at people for feeling how they feel about it. It literally commemorates the day that Australia was colonised, marking the beginning of a very long history of racism and genocide. My grandmother was in the stolen generation and is still very much alive. I think itās ok for people to be upset about it. If you wanna celebrate or just make use of the public holiday, go for it, but if itās really about the future and who we are going forward, donāt go on about tradition when people talk about changing the date.
And then everybody clapped
Lol cop a dekko at old mate
Of all the things that never happened...
That did not fucking happen.
There could be a parallel universe where it did though.
not this one
You need Quinn Mallory.
You need therapy
More than ever.
That would be where Australia didn't genocide the indigeous population So basically not any parallel universe where Australia exists as it does currently...
Ooh, careful, you'll trigger the meatheads. š
Nailed it
Who did that?
Are you being serious?
Prove it didn't happen
THERE IS NO KINDNESS OR HOPE FOR THE FUTURE. EVERYONE SHOULD JUST GIVE UP.
Seek help
lol, it was sarcasm meant to highlight the sense of futility and lack of spirit in the comment. Even if it ādid not happenā (which I think it did happen), the sentiment of the post is real. Yāall are too grumpy.
Ahaha fair enough. Some real incel loser type shit on this app so you can never be too sure lol
I call bullshit
The phone just rang.
*Bullshit speaking* Hi, can I help you?
Is your fridge still running?
ā¦um, yes it is.
Then you'd better go catch it!!
HAH HAH! VERY FUNNY! (*lock your doors*)
Are you trying to reach me about my extended warranty? I
I'm indigenous and I fly both flags, so do my kids, why do u all think this wouldn't happen?
I grew up with friends that were indigenous and they're pretty much the same. They do support the invasion day movement but they also ask that we recognize it as such and all move on together.
Because your average member on any aussie subreddit hates themselves and needs to be outraged about something.
From what I've seen, they hate themselves and Australia. Especially Melbournians.
We melbournians hate life because its fucking cold all rhe bloody time
I'm from outback Qld and worked in child protection for 8 years before coming to Melbourne. I believe Aboriginal people and culture should be celebrated. Londoners of the southern hemisphere
No I do not. I'm offended! Outraged even!
Me, me, I'm the most morally superior!!
Hello? This is Karen. I want to speak to your manager. You didn't call me about my extended warranty.
Because the loudest of us are always saying change the date etc etc it weird people out that there are generally alot of aboriginal people who don't have an opinion on the day or just generally like Australia day as a holiday
A different day would solve the issue seems easy enough lmao
a long weekend seems obvious
Just not the day colonisation of there land began is an easy ask, just shows the levels of racism even in our own government. Not many countries on this planet celebrating āNationalā days on the day you invaded a country itās an odd thing to persist at.

For one thing, Australia Day commemorates the landing of the First Fleet, and the setting up of a permanent settlement, in Sydney Cove, in 1788. Captain Cook arrived 18 years earlier, in April, on the Endeavour.
Even worse lol
Well it kinda is though
Nope
It symbolisis more than you think
I don't really see why it would to be honest. The only reason that date is profoundly significant to indigenous people is because Australia Day is celebrated on it. The invasion day movement didn't exist until the 150th anniversary, and it was rather small until the bicentennial anniversary. It was only after 1988 that it really grew. The grievance always struck me as being centred on Australia Day itself much more than the 26th of January.
There would definitely be a group that are more extreme who think celebrating period is wrong but I think a large majority just want a different day.
Yeah na
I would like to suggest the 8th of May, and call it May8 (pronounced maaaaate).
Truth be told if we are gonna have Australia day it should be January first when we be a country
Now I haven't heard that one before.Ā I'ma use it XD
It's because they like creating division between blackfella, whitefella, yellafella because they aren't a trufella.
Because they prefer one extreme or the other. The idea of nuance, critical thinking, being two or more people/views on an issue was never done in their family. You do you mate. You seem like a decent parent. Keep it up. šš½
No you're not
Triggered racists mate.
Because no normal cunt talks like āwe should acknowledge our past history but we celebrate our future togetherā unless they think they're gonna be on the telly or in the newspaper. Whereās the meme?
half the 'memes' here are just anti liberal party posts anyway, not sure what the issue is when its poking fun at the other side
Itās not even, itās just a weird non meme
The thing is too many people donāt acknowledge the past. Thatās the thing they forget when this type of photo/comment happens
First Nations people have never taken anyoneās land.
There you go. Wanting to act like it never happened. Fuck off ya dickhead.
It really didnāt. No need to be so harsh š„
How far back in history should we remember?
All of it. Remembering the past is different from holding all members of a specific ethnic group responsible for the actions of their ancestors, though. So thereās really no reason not to remember atrocities committed against First Nations Australians.
Final boss energy. The super Australian
āAnd then I told him āYouāre one of the good ones, mate!ā
Sorts by controversial
Because nothing "celebrates the future" like the colonial flag of a foreign empire that no longer exists.
What if I told you symbols can change meaning over time?
What if I told you of the 56 countries in the Commonwealth, only 4 still use British colonial flags as their national flag (Aus, NZ, Fiji and Tuvula). The rest retired their old colonial flags to museums decades ago. It's 2024, time we had a flag of our own.

Me either! Reparations and treaty now!
I am clapping so hard right now!!!
Love this!

Good bloke
I didn't say anything about forgetting it, i never will but I want my people and my children to succeed but to do that we need to move on and focus on the future not the past. Are u indigenous yourself?
True Aussie. We cant change the past and today we are all getting fucked by government and corporations. Dont let shit devide us as people.
Weāve been divided by race for 230 years
That's true racist and non-racist
Says who? I work with all kinds, whether it's Chinese Aboriginal American African and any other race. We all wake up to work a shit job. You should open an ice cream shop for personal perspectives :O
And you should run a nothing burger joint because thats what you add to a conversation
Is only joke. Not sure why reddit is so harsh lately.
It really does seem like it, I thought I'd start calling ppl out on it but it would a full time job with lots of over time

āThis lovely Aboriginal gentleman stopped into the newsagent in Perthā that kind of sentence almost never ends well.
Then everyone went and acknowledged the past together. It was great ā¦..

Regardless of if you think this is genuine. Doesn't this kind of sentiment embody the kind of morals and ethics that we want everyone to have?
Based
Champion! If we ever needed a voice, this is him...
I know you got downvoted, but you are correct. People who talk about moving forward together are my kind of people - celebrating what we have in common.
I like him - and thatās how I feel too! We are stronger together than we are divided!
This man is wise
You know he never said that right?
But if he did he is a legend and bringing aboriginals forward.
It's not Aboriginal folks who need to learn to "acknowledge our past history" mate. They are still impacted by that "past" every day.
Right, but "being possitive about the future with your identity tied to Australia is a bad thing", defend that.
"your identity" Sure, because nothing says proud Aussie like the Union Jack and colours of Britain. And how exactly does a colonial flag of an empire that no longer exists, look to the future? Explain that.
Well yeah the brits literally brought all the technology to this country and spurred it on and demanded industry shipments of wool back to Britain and made the country what it is today. If you simp England so much, go live there! This is AUSTRALIA! We have our own proud national identity, we don't need to use Britain's.
We might share a value or two, if on average a bit more dull.
Yeah we should be thankful they came over here and kidnapped, abused, raped and killed aboriginals. Otherwise how would we make toast? Be for real
Iām so over this. Canāt we all just move forward collectively. This whole situation reminds me of your partner always pointing out what youāve done in the past. You can easily break up with a partner, but this whole reparation? When will this end?
