Come back off the beach one set of suburbs and look at Highett, Cheltenham, Moorabbin. Excellent public transport, to both city and south yarra, westfield southland, lots of pockets of strip shops and restaurants, and less than 10 minute drive to the beach. You can definitely buy in at that price, especially if you're open to a reno. Lots of old school homes on the 545+ blocks go up as the boomers downsize. I think the stretch from bentleigh to mordialloc would fit your budget. Not sure if they are considered inner suburbs though

You'll be looking at something like this 59 Regent Street, Elsternwick, Vic 3185 https://www.realestate.com.au/property-house-vic-elsternwick-145238676 7 Rockbrook Road, St Kilda East, Vic 3183 https://www.realestate.com.au/property-house-vic-st+kilda+east-145137344 Seriously it's not hard to find. Just move the map too the inner South East with your parameters there's so few places in your budget that you can look at each of them. You're not in a position to be overly picky about specific pockets.

I love the punching bag on the hills hoist on that second listing

You probably won’t get into Bayside with under $2m to be honest (unless it’s Highett but even that’s gone crazy expensive); you’re looking at Kingston or maybe something tiny in Glen Eira with no car space. Rather than looking at real estate listings, sign up for REIV auction result emails and every Saturday night you’ll get a summary of what sold that weekend. That’ll help you ascertain a few things. Good luck! (For what it’s worth - I live in Bayside and we bought our house ten years ago and have followed the market since before then.)
