100% call snake catcher!
They have the tools just let them know about how deep it is so they can bring the right stuff. By that I simply mean the long hook lol
Either put some kind of makeshift ladder in there for a game of snakes and ladders or snakes can swim so chuck a hose in there and fill it with water till it floats up and fucks off, then wait for the water to drain or pump it out or use a bucket on a stick to empty it before the concrete
They don't "hate" the cold. They're ectothermic. That means that instead of the ridiculously inefficient system where you need to eat a bunch of times a day just to maintain a steady 36º internal temperature, they use environmental heat to regulate their bodily processes and just eat a couple of times a week/month.
Ice would just make it sluggish and less likely to move away from the area.
Right. Because the mammalian brain needs to be kept within a very specific temperature range or else catastrophic things happen. So the body sacrifices itself at all costs to maintain that if food stops being available. It's ridiculously inefficient.
Humans don’t need to eat a bunch of times a day to maintain your internal body temp. There’s entire populations who practice not eating from sunrise to sunset, eating every second day, etc. Most studies have proven some form of intermittent fasting is actually beneficial.
Maybe put a painters pole (or similar ) in the hole to give it something to climb up? Put it on as much of angle as you can and wedge/tie it with something to stop it rotating/rolling around when he climbs. Then promptly leave the area in case he does not fully appreciate your kindness.
Pur the shovel in the hole take a lunch break snake will be gone in a hour he'll climb.
Or call wires, or snake catcher they'll jump down a relocate him.
"Probably too deep for a snake catcher". Just call a snake catcher and tell them the situation. Let them decide whether it's too deep or not.
Why on Earth would you come to Reddit before making a simple call?
I get what you’re saying, but my understanding is that snake catchers don’t tend to service farms and rural areas - snakes don’t get relocated from them because they belong there.
But this is a large brown snake uncomfortably close to my house and kids, so I’m not really keen on it being released right here. Not am I keen on just letting it climb out to wander around our yard either. And it’s illegal to kill them. Not sure what I was hoping reddit could suggest but you don’t know what you don’t know.
I’m sure snakes pass through here all the time, but I won’t be encouraging them to visit! We have/had a resident red belly that helps deter them but she may have had an unfortunate encounter with the slasher this summer - we’re not entirely sure if it was her or a visiting suitor because it’s a bit hard to ID a partial snake.
I live rural and have had a snake catcher here several times. They can release on your property or take it elsewhere. If it's injured, they will take them, patch them up and release elsewhere. Your local facebook will have one listed.
could call wires? Snake catchers earn a living, not all are free. But Wires is. [1300 094 737](https://www.google.com/search?q=wires+wildlife+rescue&oq=wires+&gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUqCggBEAAYyQMYgAQyBggAEEUYOTIKCAEQABjJAxiABDIQCAIQLhivARjHARiABBiOBTINCAMQABiSAxiABBiKBTIHCAQQABiABDIHCAUQABiABDIHCAYQABiABDIGCAcQRRhB0gEINjA2NGowajeoAgCwAgA&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8#)
Please don't kill it! They're pretty good at climbing, if you stick a branch or a rolled up bit of chicken wire or something it'll get itself out.
Can also just call a snake catcher if you're scared of it. They've gotten snakes out of weirder places than a deep hole.
Step 1 get friend to start filming on phone in landscape mode
Step 2 grab garden hose and turn on tap
Step 3 fill posthole with water from hose
Step 4 hilarity ensues
Can you bridge across the top (timber/ log) and then tie a rope or something to it that'll drop down and reach the bottom?
The snake will climb out on its own.
Bucket on a string and a hose, put the hose in first then drop the bucket in, turn on the hose, water fills hole, snake floats into bucket, pull up bucket.
Swing bucket at the end of the string and yeet snake/bucket far away.
Bonus points if you film it.
Fold a length of electric wire and feed both ends through an electric conduit that's long enough to reach the snake. Leave a loop at the folded end. Lassoo the snake and pull gently on the wire and lift the snake out. Lower the snake into a wheelie bin and take it to where it and everyone else is safe.
I wouldn't do this with a brown. They're a bit too cray-cray and unpredictable. Either leave a long object in the hole to let it climb out itself or call a snake catcher. I'd just call a snake catcher.
Fill hole with dirt, re-engineer every other post hole and entire design and set out so it is away from original hole. Only take you about an hour or so tops 😂
Chopping their heads off definitely kills them. It's illegal to do so, cruel, unnecessary and I do not recommend it but like most vertebrates, snakes do die if you remove their heads.
Yeah. A decapitated snake head can still have some residual nervous impulses and can bite and envenomate, even though it's dead.
*And you'd fuckin' deserve it.*
I actually watched an episode of one of those "attacked by an animal" shows where a guy had chopped the head off a rattlesnake and it bit him after. According to him the head jumped at him and got him twice.
I'm sure a snake catcher will know what to do, just give them a ring. Best not to tackle it yourself.
100% call snake catcher! They have the tools just let them know about how deep it is so they can bring the right stuff. By that I simply mean the long hook lol
100% second this you woukd be surprised the amount of ways they have had to retrieve snakes. My friend is one. They will know what to do.
Either put some kind of makeshift ladder in there for a game of snakes and ladders or snakes can swim so chuck a hose in there and fill it with water till it floats up and fucks off, then wait for the water to drain or pump it out or use a bucket on a stick to empty it before the concrete
Could you pour water in and float it out?
Or could you just pour your concrete?
Maybe some ice too? They hate the cold.

We digest fat and then muscle when food is unavailable. We can go for days and days without food and still maintain body temp.
Right. Because the mammalian brain needs to be kept within a very specific temperature range or else catastrophic things happen. So the body sacrifices itself at all costs to maintain that if food stops being available. It's ridiculously inefficient.

Cool. What's the fuel mammals use to produce body heat?
Previously stored fat
I was replying to your statement about “a bunch of times a day”. Humans are mammals. We don’t need to eat several times a day to maintain 36c.
Hahaha
Not haha... I'm pretty sure snakes can swim.
Maybe put a painters pole (or similar ) in the hole to give it something to climb up? Put it on as much of angle as you can and wedge/tie it with something to stop it rotating/rolling around when he climbs. Then promptly leave the area in case he does not fully appreciate your kindness.
Drop a tree branch down the hole. Walk away. The snake will be gone by morning.
Etch RIP SNAKE in footing once poured.
🪦 problem solved ✓ 👋😘
Rough bit of timber with 6 inch cross members, give it a ladder to climb. Hold on! Use a wooden ladder!!! Put in hole & leave it for 24 hours
Carefully lower a shotgun into the hole and let the snake climb up it and on its way to freedom.
Do you own a flute?
I have a mint condition flesh flute.
Mint condition ? Never been used !
Yeah , see, I have a condition .
Pur the shovel in the hole take a lunch break snake will be gone in a hour he'll climb. Or call wires, or snake catcher they'll jump down a relocate him.
$15k fine to kill it bro.
They can climb just stick a stick in there overnight
"Probably too deep for a snake catcher". Just call a snake catcher and tell them the situation. Let them decide whether it's too deep or not. Why on Earth would you come to Reddit before making a simple call?
Because r/ausrenovations experts know more than snake catchers duh..
The smart move would be to go to r/AustralianSnakes
Don't be ridiculous they only know about Allen's snakes.
As well as thinking the professional for the job can't do this job

If your worried about it climbing the shovel, just put the shovel inside and walk away
Please don't kill it! They're pretty good at climbing, if you stick a branch or a rolled up bit of chicken wire or something it'll get itself out. Can also just call a snake catcher if you're scared of it. They've gotten snakes out of weirder places than a deep hole.
That's HIS hole now
Step 1 get friend to start filming on phone in landscape mode Step 2 grab garden hose and turn on tap Step 3 fill posthole with water from hose Step 4 hilarity ensues
Chuck a big tree branch down there and let it climb up
call the ABC and tell them scomo is hiding from ASIO on your property, the snake
Put a branch in it so it can climb out.
Stand a stick in the hole
Whatever you do, for goodness sake video it!
Get the concrete in there ASAP
Unwritten Aussie rule. Don’t be a cunt.
I'm starting to think maybe we should write this one down.
water? snakes can swim. might collapse your posthole tho

vacuum cleaner

Most snake-related deaths are from people who don't know what they are doing trying to kill or grab or otherwise mess with snakes.
I wouldn't do this with a brown. They're a bit too cray-cray and unpredictable. Either leave a long object in the hole to let it climb out itself or call a snake catcher. I'd just call a snake catcher.
At what point do I hook the wires up to a car battery?
Instructions Unclear :o
fill the hole with water most snakes can swim some what. or call a snake catcherthey will have a idea.
just concrete it it
A shot gun or a grenade should do the trick .
Fill it with water
I’d pour the concrete and set the post after a day with a broomstick in it.
Fill hole with dirt, re-engineer every other post hole and entire design and set out so it is away from original hole. Only take you about an hour or so tops 😂
Fill the hole with water
vaccum cleaner down the hole works well
Drop the shovel in the hole with the handle sticking out the top. The snake should climb up and out on the shovel's handle.
Napalm
Chopping its head off does not kill it, never do this to a snake it is super cruel.
Not to sound facetious, but it must surely die once its head is removed? Do they simply die very slowly?
Chopping their heads off definitely kills them. It's illegal to do so, cruel, unnecessary and I do not recommend it but like most vertebrates, snakes do die if you remove their heads.
Yeah it doesn’t die instantly like you would. It dies slow and agonising death.
No it doesn't
It is dead, the snake body can just keep moving for a while
As can the head.
They die, but the severed head can still deliver a potentially fatal bite for a while after.
Snakes float on concrete, just drop the post in and pour.... and watch that skamp slither away after its done.
Throw some burning paper. That will trigger some activity
Ah yes, roll the dice on accidentally starting a bush fire, excellent idea in March in Australia.
Whatever you do, please video it or at least update us.
More importantly, is the post hole compliant?
I'm not sure I see the issue... the snake just did you a favour
