SandmanAwaits

That is definitely not OK!

Otherwise-Device-258

Will be asking them back to fix it, thanks!

SirDale

Yep, if you went into a house to buy and you saw that would you be happy? If not then OP should definitely not be happy either.

SandmanAwaits

Exactly right!

InvestigatorGlad4700

We unfortunately had this same issue. Don't even notice the cover plate now. https://preview.redd.it/pkpd2e10dq4d1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b895ef7f7e079603d4161de355a81e6d609b1720

Zoodoz2750

The hole behind the cover plate must be filled with silicon.

InvestigatorGlad4700

Yep, agree. That would/should be standard anyway.

SnooChickens7557

Might be a good idea but it’s not necessary if the waterproofing is done right. Tile and grout isn’t really waterproof anyway, water is getting in there either way.

9warbane

15 years of plumbing. It always gets silicon. Just because there's waterproofing doesn't mean you let water get in.

Larkful_Dodger

Slight water seepage, vs water trickle, one will do much more damage than the other over time.

Zoodoz2750

My comments are based on Aussie building standards. When my bathroom was built, a waterproof membrane had to be installed, sealing the floor and walls up to any outlets (eg taps, shower head, and waste) any penetration of the membrane had to be filled with silicon.

SnooChickens7557

This is not a penetration of the membrane, water points are in before waterproofing and get sealed around. I agree that is still worth the silicone but if the tile was cut better no one would be able to see it and it would never be a problem.

Zoodoz2750

Yes, it requires an abrasive hole saw. It is very difficult to control while cutting though.

komos_

Tile with epoxy is waterproof, no? Not that this invalidates the need for a membrane. I just thought it was the porous grout not the tile itself?

Budget-Scar-2623

The membrane is flexible, tiles/grout are not. If a tile or grout line cracks and it takes you a while to notice and fix it, with waterproofing = probably fine, without waterproofing = potentially catastrophic

komos_

Thanks for explaining. I am just a bit confused, having had a 1960s shower that had no membrane and only tile and adhesive on concrete blocks and brick walls.

Budget-Scar-2623

All good. If you put tiles on concrete and brick and the building design means water won’t find its way out of the bathroom, you might avoid structural damage (you won’t avoid mould). But that’s a lot of ifs and unknowns, and not many bathrooms are built that way anymore. When i ripped out our bathroom, there was no membrane. Steel frame house. Tiles were starting to fall off the wall due to soggy rotten gyprock, and a good portion of the bottom plates had simply rusted away. My dad did a lot of DIY bathrooms back in the day, tried to convince me membranes was a waste of money. While standing in what was left of the bathroom he helped me rip out.

komos_

Haha, classic dad. Just in the process of having my shower ripped out, original tiles and adhesive, and only a very small sign of leak on one wall. Not sure how it kept for this long without a membrane. Very thankful.

Budget-Scar-2623

Very lucky. It’s possible previous owner (?) was aware that tiles and grout require maintenance. Grout can/should be replaced periodically, tiles can be replaced when they break/crack too, but it’s much easier when they’re on a brick wall or concrete floor

komos_

I think so. It looked like it had been regrouted at some stage but had cracked tiles and so on. Also above another apartment, with no indication it leaked downstairs. Needless to say, the current shower install has under and over membrane for screed and epoxy grouting. Not risking it.

grungysquash

Absolutely!!

No-Highlight-2127

Agree. Silicon for wet area like Ardex brand and a cover plate, it can't be left like that. Rough as.

Otherwise-Device-258

Yeah fair enough, thanks for the example, looks fine with context, and yeah, not noticeable, just sad of what it could have been

UpVoteForKarma

It's such a small defect dude, it is such a massive head fuck to fix that will damage your waterproofing membrane, that the only way to really do it properly is to re-do it all again..... If the plumber didn't point it out and just wacked on a cover plate you probably would not have known..... I reckon you could almost cover the cut marks with white silicone around the shower fitting, if you didn't want a cover plate....

Larkful_Dodger

Or silicone the gap, then put a cover plate over it.

sensaisean191

1/2 inch chrome flat coverplate would look nice

Otherwise-Device-258

Annoyed that I have to have a cover plate at all but agreed, I think I'd rather that than potentially compromise the new waterproofing by ripping the tile out, thanks for the advice!

donk202020

Don’t go the chrome. Tilers did the same to me and I got a large polished stainless steel washer to use as cover place. It looks more substantial than the chrome cover plates and actually looks like it’s part of the shower fittings

TransportationTrick9

Less likely to turn green and peel too

trainzkid88

thats a idea.

Master-of-possible

Use a banana for scale next time

wigneyr

No, the cheap bastards didn’t want to buy a diamond hole saw so did 4 cuts with a grinder instead

pevekay41

No. Not okay. Follow the advice given. Silicone the hole, use a cover plate.

Puzzleheaded_Tip_412

It's a bit of a shitty Tiling job, you could cover with a rose otherwise, you potentially compromising the waterproofing to take the tile off

Flugglebunny

Regardless of the size of the hole, it's an issue. Even if the hole is smaller/hidden, water still gets in. Usually, you can silicon behind the fitting and hide it. Unfortunately, you will need to seal around the whole fitting.

filbruce

The escutcheon plates might still be in the box. Otherwise, you might be able to buy some from Reece or Highgrove.

DickSemen

The technical term for this is "butchered", as in the useless butcher that fitted this has butchered the job. How someone could think this standard of (un)finish(d) is acceptable is sadly a poor reflection of tradespeoples pride in their workmanship, these days.

yourupnow

Should have a cover plate, if not get the plumber to get a flat chrome cover plate and silicone around hole.

NeonX91

That's fine, they just need to install the rest of it (Cover plate) and then seal it. Let them finish the job.

pirrip69

Silicone and cover plate

Flimsy-Year9038

If they install a cover plate then all good. But they can't leave it like that

Dragon_Racer

Linkware make a product called the tilers mistake. We call them the fuck up flange. Much nicer looking than the average stainless cover plates they will buy for a few bucks from the plumbing store. https://preview.redd.it/2bkilhvjlr4d1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cfd7b6a7f2d1a7868c76bcdf8a3cc8ce04470aa1

thekingoftheville

Pretty average tiling job but also most shower rails like that come with their own cover plate to avoid this. A cheap 15mm cover plate from Bunnings will make it look a whole lot better but still not ideal

theblueberryfarmer

It's interesting, it looks like straight cuts behind the fitting?

Person_of_interest_

they forgot the cover plates get them back

SeaAttitude2832

👍

calv80

Looks terrible

Torx_Bit0000

Builder here The plumber should've used a hole saw not a grinder Id call that clown back to water proof the hole

PhotojournalistSame7

This won't pass, why don't they just spend $120 for a box of diamond holes saw 😵‍💫

Impossible-Pie6236

No , water will get in…..

Rhino_7707

Get a cover plate for it. Fixed!

starbuck3108

Call that clown back straight away and ask him why he doesn't own a hole saw. Using a grinder with straight cuts is lazy AF and dodgy.

Intrepid_Cosmonaut

Looks good from the plumbers house.

ZealousidealNewt6679

Did you seriously have to ask? Like, wtf? Of course it's not fucking OK.

jesustityfkingchrist

No flange plate?

Beneficial-Shock9505

No not ok!

[deleted]

Normally there is a collar/ring that would slide back and cover it.

Slothie__

This looks exactly like the last one we had installed. Did it not have a cover plate in the box?

Swimming-Tap-4240

No.Even if there is a membrane behind the tiles ,water will get between the tiles and the wall and mold will form.

lovemykitchen

So rough. At least a flange between it and the wall

JasonbigJ

Put a plate over it with silicone in and around the hole to stop water and to make it look better if you just bought it like that if you payed for it to be done get them back to cut a new tile and do the job properly

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> if you *paid* for it FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

Wooden-Consequence81

If they think this is fine (and without communicating with you) then I'd be checking a lot more areas.

Mission_Literature44

Wouldn’t burger with a cover plate. White silicon finish and you won’t even know it’s there. Make sure surface dry, pump with white, spray with soapy water and run your finger around

Shaqtacious

This is shocking

Internal_Economics67

The tiler is a mung bean if he hasn't looked at all the tapware and cut holes accordingly. You can get cover plates called 'tilers mistake'

IndustryPlant666

It’s an issue. Looks fucking terrible and a cover plate isn’t a solution for a crap job. If you paid for proper installation you should get a proper installation.

Nottheadviceyaafter

Do ya best, silicon the rest.........

Embarrassed-End3028

Hire a plumber

peaandham610

What shower head? I reckon I have the same in black, you should have two trim pieces for that. Mine was a Casa Lusso Omega I just did my bathroom renovation, the tile cut the hole best he could and it I could see a tile cut, at this point I didn’t realise I had the trim pieces to still put on. Without the manufacturer providing the trim the tolerance is literally fuck all and it’s gonna be hard for a tiler. I know some will say, well the tiler should be better etc, but it’s a poor design. You can get trim pieces from Bunnings designed to slide over the water 1/2 outlet and that’ll cover the hole

Otherwise-Device-258

This one is the Caroma urbane, unfortunately no cover plate

K00zaa

Ummm no, that's shit & if anyone says it's fine, then no wonder the building industry at the moment is FUCKED, pride no longer exists, the i don't care she'll be right attitude of today is just FUCKING DISGUSTING, you paid for a bathroom reno im assuming, not a half assed job

bleak_cilantro

Replacing the tile would likely lead to a more shit result. Needs some silicon + escutcheon

Otherwise-Device-258

Yeah this is what I'm scared of :(

bleak_cilantro

Use of an escutcheon not uncommon https://preview.redd.it/rnq19gkqnq4d1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=422ab97b044fe589e2d60e2084d037dd41ddca82

DiggerBloke

That’s the go or a cover plate either one with abit of silicone under edge, how do I know I’m fitting one right now it came with escutcheon

Successful_Gas4174

Maybe a white cover plate will help you get close to the look you were going for? But yeah, that’s really fucking annoying.

OverConference6550

Exactly the same thing happened to me, 10 years ago. You can go to all the trouble to plan and do everything precisely, and then it just takes one braindead plumber or tiler to not think about what theyre doing when it matters most. Just use one of those cover plates others have mentioned. It will shit you less as the years roll on, and you wont be bothered at some point.

zztopzz71

Silicone and hope for the best. Mate.

Due-Giraffe6371

That’s not ok as water would be getting behind the tiles. Can’t believe they used an angle grinder to cut that instead of a hole saw but in their defence they probably thought the shower would cover it but the tiler should be coming back to replace that tile

Reasonable_Gap_7756

Does it look OK? Just starting there means that tiles getting replaced

Cheezel62

No. It’s need sealing or water will get down behind the tiles and wreck stuff

trainzkid88

yes a trim ring

trainzkid88

they should put a trim plate on there and fill in behind with neutral cure sanitary sealant to make sure it water tight.

yellchai

Rough as guts hey. 🤦‍♂️

MaddeninglyUnwise

I can't believe a tradie would see this and determine that another person would be happy to see this for the foreseeable future. Like, have some respect for your craft, dude.

xjrh8

Imagine being the plumber that fitted that off and walked away thinking that was ok.
