I know, that was a poor choice of words on my part. I know it's not plastic and will need some intense body work, just trying to determine if it'll be more cost effective to replace
Just replaced one on a 21 with a brand new tailgate from the dealership. Used CLEAN ones were running around $1500-$2000 at the majority of salvage yards. He’ll have a hard time finding a salvage yard that’ll let one go for less without damage
No I understand it won't pop out, I suppose that was a poor choice of words. I know it'll take some body work, it's not plastic. Just debating if the body work will cost more than a replacement
Looks like used ones are extremely highly priced right now, which almost always means the new part is on backorder from Honda. Make sure the shop you take it to checks on part availability if they plan on replacing it.
That's what I came here for lol, Ive never done body work but have seen some magic on here. Guess that magic comes at a price higher than a replacement lol
You can do magic with consistent damage, but this is all over the place. Not worth it when you can go to a junkyard with this same vehicle and color that was totaled in a front end collision and buy the rear gate and swap it out. It's always about labor cost vs parts cost.
My mother in law got backed into the other day and I was looking for some advice on repair. She hasn't been in for a quote yet, but I've looked around at some shells and am seeing them for anywhere from ~500-900. I feel like finding one in white for 5-600 might be the way? I guess I won't know until she gets a quote on repair, but figured someone here might have a ballpark. I appreciate it!
Edit: yes I understand pop out is not going to happen on metal, that was a poor choice of words. I've seen some magical bodywork on this sub, but had no frame of reference for cost of labor. It sounds like paint matched replacement is the way to go. I appreciate all the input
Yeah that needs a new gate, especially at those prices; the repair time I would want to fix that(if at all, it’s always hard to see everything in pictures) would cost more than that.
It won't be perfect if you "pop it out", but it may be "if u squint it's mint". It's a crv, if you are the one paying for it, i would consider not replacing the hatch (unless you find a salvage online (for cheap) with the same color)
It’s repairable as is everything but will take a lot of time to get it right. That’s why it may be cheaper to replace with a second hand part or get a new tailgate, paint it then move all the stuff over
I have actually seen PDR fix things like that. Even with the hard creases. I was shocked to see it myself. It doesn’t hurt to at past take it someplace for an evaluation. Considering how accessible the area is being a tailgate, why not at least try?
I would first try to get a quote from a couple of reputable PDR shops in the area, if those can be pushed out it will probably be a hell of a lot cheaper than buying another door that's color matched and having it shipped and installed. www.car-part.com is a great place to look for a color matched door, it's an aggregation of salvage yards across the United States.
I think the PDR guys would charge more for this than it would cost to buy and paint a new gate (I also don’t think they could get all the damage out without requiring paint)
Because a really good PDR specialist should be able to get this worked out for a few hundred bucks. Today's PDR techniques are pretty incredible, just watch a few PDR YouTube videos.

There's no way the labour involved would be cheaper than a straight swap with a used gate.
Changing a bolt on panel vs saving a fixed quarter are two very different things.
10 hour rep on a quarter is still cheaper than replacement. 10 hour repair on gate really isn't.
Notice how both dents you shared are on quarter panels? Because quarter panels make sense to repair because of the cost involved in replacing them. A PDR guy can charge just under the customers deductible. I can promise you if the customers had $500 deductibles, he wouldn't have touched them. $1500 is more realistic. The first question I ask on big dents is "what's your deductible?" The answer tells me what I can charge or whether it's worth my time.
There's a lot more at play than "can I get that out?". That's the side of the PDR business most people don't understand.
sorry I'm not that knowledgable in pdr stuff, so you know better, I wrote what i would consider as an options, same way the OP asked for the opinions here:)
It's not going to 'pop out'
I know, that was a poor choice of words on my part. I know it's not plastic and will need some intense body work, just trying to determine if it'll be more cost effective to replace
Best bet is to try and find a clean used one the same color.
Just replaced one on a 21 with a brand new tailgate from the dealership. Used CLEAN ones were running around $1500-$2000 at the majority of salvage yards. He’ll have a hard time finding a salvage yard that’ll let one go for less without damage
Wow, around here used price doesn't jump, but availability def goes down fast depending on new part demand.
The phrase “pop out” makes me think you’re envisioning like a suction cup pulling it out in 5 minutes, this needs to be replaced
No I understand it won't pop out, I suppose that was a poor choice of words. I know it'll take some body work, it's not plastic. Just debating if the body work will cost more than a replacement
That ain't getting worked out. That's a replace immediately
What year is the car
It's an 18 or 19, but from what I understand, the gate is the same part from 17-20
That’s correct, does it have the power opening/closing?
Yes I believe it does
Looks like used ones are extremely highly priced right now, which almost always means the new part is on backorder from Honda. Make sure the shop you take it to checks on part availability if they plan on replacing it.
Probably seen one of those dyi articles on Facebook etc showing a toilet plunger and saying using it and hot water might pop out dent LOL
That's a replacement all day long. That's creased and dented in multiple spots. PDR isn't fixing that. Lmao
That's what I came here for lol, Ive never done body work but have seen some magic on here. Guess that magic comes at a price higher than a replacement lol

Not would I consider trying conventional repair. That’s toast.

Lol "if you squint it's mint", never heard that one for, but that's great
if you lived in cuba and coulndt get another one they would fix it, anywhere else..replace.
I appreciate it

If it was plastic.... probably, but you are screwed here lol
Will be cheaper to replace than fix.
If you can remove the interior trim you mat be able to pop it out
I have actually seen PDR fix things like that. Even with the hard creases. I was shocked to see it myself. It doesn’t hurt to at past take it someplace for an evaluation. Considering how accessible the area is being a tailgate, why not at least try?
fixed worse
Needs to be replaced.
I appreciate it

Why do you feel like PDR is a good option here? It needs a gate.

Def replacement You can get a used one from lkq It's hard for the lift gates to get repaired there due to lack or access

I'd charge more than what a recycled gate would cost to PDR that.
