The 3 authenticators that are generally accepted as trustworthy are Beckett, JSA, and PSA. Getting the item verified by them is how you maximize the value. To figure out the actual value the best method is to go on eBay, search for what you have, sort by completed sales, and find the best match.  If you can't find the exact item signed and it's a highly sought after collectible you can take the average sold price for the item, add the average price for the autograph, and pad it based on what you think is fair. The longer you can sit on the item the more likely you are to get what you're asking.

A value can be determined by looking up the autograph in question on ebay and then selecting 'sold items' from the filters at the side, scroll through the prices that similar items have sold for, taking note of authintacation prices vs. Unauthintacated items, also taking note of what's signed... from there you should be able to work out if it's worth the cost and trouble of authintacation. Keep in mind that authintacation is an opinion. Some authintacation services like 'psa' will try to deceive you by saying psa/dna, but there's no special way they can tell if the autograph is truly authentic at the end of it all. With that being said it seems to be collectors standard and can possibly push the price up 300-400%. Now I've sold many items with no authintacation for authenticated prices due to having pictures of the celeb signing the item, that's is usually more appealing than even authintacation. I also simply do not want the hassle of sending the item away, it's a lot of risk, but some people think it's worth it.
