There are a lot of really buff guys that are super shy and can’t talk to women. And then there are a bunch of skinny guys who are consistently the loudest person in the room.
Right but it’s a stereotype for a reason. Toph made an educated guess based on the voice. That doesn’t mean it’s always the case. But have you never formed a mental image of someone just based on their voice?
Yes but it's a stage play. They found a really buff guy and told him to sound like a really "tough" buff guy, so he did a voice that people would associate with a buff guy. Because he's playing a character in that moment.
Sorry I’m not saying she could see the actor in that episode, but that she’s seen other people like the bolder and such with those voices and builds. So she can hear the voice and tie that to the general build of the person based off of previous experiences.
I’m not 100% sure, but I don’t believe toph’s “vision” (tremor sense) is solely an earthbending technique. Instead just being a lot easier to learn for earthbenders due to their connection to the earth & lack of people who know how to do it.
I mainly say this due to Toph being able to “see” the wooden sandbender boat out in the desert. Even saying she felt vibrations from kicking it.
I don't think it's a strictly earth bending thing. Toph senses the vibrations, which should work on most surfaces. Like, we don't see Toph needing help getting around whenever they go somewhere with a wooden floor.
Fair point. But when she’s still at her parents house I thought she said that she uses bending to see. But you’re right she does still walk normally on other surfaces. However she does say when she walks in sand things look fuzzy. Granted at the end she mastered sand bending so maybe she needed practice with seeing through it.
She can also tell where someone is pointing before they point. You're also watching a show about people who can bend the elements to their will. A certain amount of suspension of disbelief is kinda expected.
But, yes, I've always noticed this too. Definitely convenient for the plot.
It's really not that complicated. She was a professional wrestler for a few years she's met plenty of buff dudes with deep masculine voices like Tuff over there.
You can't tell someone's stature by the sound of their voice. They are not mutually exclusive. They do it in media bc people AS A COLLECTIVE are stupid and gullible bc it fits a stereotype. And we all know the truth about stereotypes.
Yes. You can. You can do it incredibly easy. It's not even slightly difficult. You're not always right but you can be right enough times to be able to do it.
Also all Toph said was "I sound like a buff guy". Not "I am a buff guy". She's saying she sounds like a stereotypical buff guy.
>You can do it incredibly easy. It's not even slightly difficult. You're not always right but you can be right enough times to be able to do it.
This a very dangerous thing to say these days. Stereotypes are tricky and misleading. That's why they're stereotypes. And this is what causes racism and discrimination.
>Also all Toph said was "I sound like a buff guy". Not "I am a buff guy". She's saying she sounds like a stereotypical buff guy.
Fair but the implication is still there.
I'm not sure how we ended up on this tangent but I think it's gone far enough. Take it easy.
You are the one taking it way too far here man. It's a theatre play with performers. Putting on exaggerated voices is apart of characterization. Even using the show we can see this with The Boulder
It's a pretty stereotypical buff tough guy voice coming from the stage, so I don't see why it's so surprising that's what she says. Not to mention we see that Aang can see a person's outline using seismic sense when he faces Ozai, and Toph's seismic sense is so tuned she can feel individual ants running around on the ground.
Being a pro wrestler, she probably associates that tone of voice with larger muscular men like the Boulder.
I imagine it's his voice being so deep is part of it
Like it'snot just deep as in a guy, deep because then that's like. . Sokka or Zuko
He sounds like his vocal chords can bench her
How is this surprising? The dudes voice was deep as shit. The deepest we ever heard in the series. Who wouldn’t know it was a buff guy. Just cause Toph is blind doesn’t mean she isnt able to know how buff someone is. Actually because of her being blind she is able to tell the difference in anyone voice since her ears are heightened. This sounds like a question my little brother asked me earlier about Toph. I wanted to slap him.
When a stage actor is hamming it up and playing a big buff dude, or a voice actor, or a D&D players you can tell generally. Weird that people find this unusual
People...can do that in real life. A specialized forensic linguist can make a ton of precise conference based only on voice, and even a regular person can vaguely judge build.
The more muscles someone has the more force there is behind their breath. There are some exceptions too this rule but if you listen to Terry Cruise’s voice the low volume of it is from the muscles in his chest.
Tell me something, the first time you saw the king of Omashu episode, did you have any idea how buff Bumi was thanks to his voice? Or were you just as surprised as Aang was when Bumi pulled off his royal robes to reveal his chiseled torso?
It's coding. If you consume enough fiction and try to pattern recognize hard enough, you will be able to too.
And these sorts of trends can sorta be applied to real life too. Not as accurately, but you will find yourself occasionally able to accurately stereotype people based off of their voice and how they talk.
It's much less accurate than doing so with fiction of course. Real life doesn't adhere to tropes. People are complex, characters aren't. Relatively.
I mean, when you hear certain voices, we can somewhat visualize what we think the person looks like without having seen them. I don't see why Toph can't do the same.
Tell me something, the first time you saw the king of Omashu episode, did you have any idea how buff Bumi was thanks to his voice? Or were you just as surprised as Aang was when Bumi pulled off his royal robes to reveal his chiseled torso?
she's not like, using divination or anything
it's literally just like she says, he sounds like a buff guy
his voice is similar to what the voice of a buff guy would be
Tell me something, the first time you saw the king of Omashu episode, did you have any idea how buff Bumi was thanks to his voice? Or were you just as surprised as Aang was when Bumi pulled off his royal robes to reveal his chiseled torso?
I assume at some point in her earlier childhood someone taught her what male and female were and how they generally differed in terms of build and voice.
I mean, someone who is blind is going to be able to tell details about how someone speaks better than someone who can't and given that she spent most of her time before meeting the Gaang fighting overly muscular meatheads, she has probably gotten an idea of what someone with huge muscles sounds like. At least enough to make a guess. It isn't too unreasonable honestly.
It's echolocation. The sound vibration bounces everywhere in the room so most likely, yes. Her feet helps her walk but she can still see with her hands and ears too. Lol
She made an assessment. It’s a very possible and realistic thing that people are capable of doing based off of conclusions drawn from occurrences in real-time.
Tell me something, the first time you saw the king of Omashu episode, did you have any idea how buff Bumi was thanks to his voice? Or were you just as surprised as Aang was when Bumi pulled off his royal robes to reveal his chiseled torso?
Most human beings associate deep masculine voices with large men. Even if it's not always true. It's no different than assuming teenage girls will have high-pitched voices. Everyone has a general assumption of what certain looking people sound like.
I mean, imagine hearing that guy who played Toph talking, without ever seeing him. Would you imagine a short, skinny twig of a guy before you did a big buff dude? Most wouldn't.
Especially when she's a professional wrestler. If anybody was going to assume what a deep masculine voiced guy looked like it'd be her and she probably was imagining someone built like The Boulder.
Tell me something, the first time you saw the king of Omashu episode, did you have any idea how buff Bumi was thanks to his voice? Or were you just as surprised as Aang was when Bumi pulled off his royal robes to reveal his chiseled torso?
Does that matter? In the avatar universe, within the confines of the show and without breaking the fourth wall, there is a buff guy named Bumi who sounds like a silly old man.
Ah, yes I must have missed that this is 100% consistent non-children show, my bad. Even in real life muscular old man will sound different than young one.
I specified that assumptions were not always true. My point is that most people HAVE built in assumptions about what someone is going to look like based on what they sound like, and it's not unreasonable that Toph assumed it was a buff guy based on his voice.
Are you telling me you've never listened to the radio and heard a song from an artist you don't know, and formulated a mental image of them even though you don't have any real indication of what they truly look like?
That doesn’t necessarily mean Toph can feel those vibrations. Her whole thing is feeling the vibrations in the earth in order to sense her surroundings in a way similar to sight.
Nah Toph loved it because it was a propaganda piece that just mocked all her friends so it was hilarious to her. Also the fact they made her a ripped to shit buff guy complimented her
Everyone in this thread is a lot nicer than me loooool coz y'all out here gentle parenting OP when this question is about as common sense as it gets. Being able to guess someone's build or other physical features from their voice is as intuitive for seeing people in the real world as it would be for a blind, fictional character in this scene. You've never guessed someone's looks just based off their voice? I had a rough image of what Kevin Michael Richardson (a very famous voice actor) looked like long before I ever saw his face irl. I'm pretty sure it's a skill with roots in evolution since humans are social creatures, but that's just my guess ...
Tell me something, the first time you saw the king of Omashu episode, did you have any idea how buff Bumi was thanks to his voice? Or were you just as surprised as Aang was when Bumi pulled off his royal robes to reveal his chiseled torso?
You're conflating two issues there, bub. Bumi's VA was *deliberately* selected to sound more like a scrawny, mad scientist vibes character. That's *why* the twist worked. In fact, the very fact that we felt his voice was a mismatch/misleading given his build kind of proves my point. Voices usually have a certain stereotypical appearance that we associate to them. Now it may not always match one-to-one in real life, but the exception, as you so eloquently pointed out, is what proves the rule.
I'm sure you do this more often in real life than you realise. Point is, it's not so much a fictional phenomenon than it is an everyday occurrence. Hope that helps.
You kinda broke the fourth wall there. The fact remains that, in the avatar universe, there is a guy named Bumi who sounds like a mad scientist but is actually a buff old man. Considering that people like that exist in the avatar universe, I feel like Toph should be a little more hesitant before guessing the build of an individual by their voice.
She stood up so she was using her feet and the vibrations from standing up to see whether hes a buff guy
But also peoples voices are usually deeper if theyre buff.
She spent a significant part of her developmental years around big, brawny, bodybuilding earth benders. I think she knows what that archetype sounds like.
Look at King Bumi. He fits that exact description yet sounds like a goofball. If she heard king Bumi’s and couldn’t feel the vibrations in the earth because she was on a balcony seat and he was on a wooden stage, she’d have no idea he was built the way he is.
This scene is great! They are all unhappy with their portrayals in the play and Toph is loving hers. The first play scene with Toph where she (he) screams was hilarious too. Watched it with my kids and they were rolling!
Can she not sense the shape of someone's body with her seismic sense? From the way the circles move over people when they represent it visually, it sure seems like she could.
People constantly have a pre-conceived notion of what someone sounds like and have a disonance if you are too off from expectations. But, a blind girl can't make an educated guess.
A lot of people can't handle the Japanese voice of Goku. It's weird to hear what Putin actually sounds like.
If not the voice, Toph may have been able to put character to body after that. The giant mofo would just be someone on stage until they had lines. At which point Toph could put the two together.
"I sound like a guy." <- hearing voice
"A really buff guy." <- connecting voice to other senses
I always hated filler episodes that summarized prior episodes, but the creators were geniuses when they created this episode.
The joke behind the giant earth bender was that everyone who was beaten by Toph lied about her description.
I mean she was known to go to the Earthbending Competitions, she probably got used to being near the tough type of men who would always boast about their size and strength which I’m guessing means they used manly voices for intimidation and respect.
She sees with her feet!!! Why is this the question everyone has about everything toph says?!? Yes she’s blind….her eyes don’t work….she can literally feel every single square inch of everything around her. She knows that the fully clothed person hidden behind a sheet has a hairy mole on their butt yes she knows that guy is buff
Go to a gym one day and talk to the buffest dude there then go talk to regular sized person.
I feel like this doesn’t always apply lol. Look at Cbums body and then listen to his voice. They don’t match at all.
Haha! I always found dudes who are huge like to sound huge.
The exception doesn't make the rule
When they say big guy, I always Imagine Shaq, or the Rock, or Arnold.
Who is Cbum?
One of the most ripped and massive bodybuilders in out generation
![gif](giphy|28lD3EFJO7bO24LKS3|downsized) this guy
Idk but Cbum reads to me like “sebum” which is a REALLY GROSS word. People should…probably not call him that.
short for chris bumstead. it is read as C - Bum
She said „sounds like“, doesnt mean shes sure.
You got duped twice Edit: I mean duplicated not tricked
I knew that was gonna happen! My wifi was bad, im sorry😅 I’ll look for the other one
there's two, for a total of three. Happens to the best of us
Deleted them🤝
Neat
Depends on how much they're 'roiding.
Ever heard Mike Tyson speak?
that’s a valid point
Thats a very valid point.
There are a lot of really buff guys that are super shy and can’t talk to women. And then there are a bunch of skinny guys who are consistently the loudest person in the room.
It's not the volume some people can just tell. Especially a blind person since their senses are heightened.
Right but it’s a stereotype for a reason. Toph made an educated guess based on the voice. That doesn’t mean it’s always the case. But have you never formed a mental image of someone just based on their voice?

And then there's Mile Tyson whose body does not match his voice
Just bc someone is large in stature doesn't mean they are ladies men and deep voice. Thats just what the media will sell you.
"You're a dead man, Ramses!"
Clearly you’ve never seen the Grown Ups movie
She spent god knows how long listening to people like The Boulder. Of course she can tell how people are built using just the voice.
And she can see general details of a person through her feet. I’m sure she can sense how big or small someone is.
I dont think she could earthbend in the theatre cus its like made of wood
Sorry I’m not saying she could see the actor in that episode, but that she’s seen other people like the bolder and such with those voices and builds. So she can hear the voice and tie that to the general build of the person based off of previous experiences.

I told you I'm done with this inane argument. Peace out.
When did she know where someone is pointing before they did?
![gif](giphy|4IzOgM1bfOe6k)
Blind people still have awareness of themselves, so this gag isn’t really out of the question
And I hope they keep the blind jokes in the series. But I'm not holding my breath.
Distinctly, she points out that she can't see where they're pointing. She's responding to them saying "look over there"
I think it was in the finale when Sokka pointed to the airship? She started bending before he pointed.
You can do that as well. You can infer general information about age, gender and some physical traits simply by someone's voice :)
When they move she can feel the vibrations.
*a few moments earlier* “My feet can’t see anything from up here!”
Forgot about that
Incorrect. She sees by releasing a sonic wave through her mouth
Toph Batfong
It's a pretty stereotypical buff tough guy voice coming from the stage, so I don't see why it's so surprising that's what she says. The animation of sound waves in her vision passes through people's entire bodies. I always thought she could see the shape, like a scanner.
I thought those were vibrations in the earth because she’s an earth bender. No?
Well actually she screams at her target to get echolocation back. Like a bat. Did you not watch the play?
But how... detailed is her image of their bodies? I need answers!
![gif](giphy|qs4ll1FSxKnNHeSmom)

Deep tone bigger guy
Maybe when someone has a really deep, masculine voice and calls himself ‘tough’ one could figure they’re buff lol
Yeah it's not hard to do this this is like, the least impressive display of her hearing ability.
She can dodge projectiles by feeling earth, so yeah I’m gonna go with “yes”
She’s sitting in a balcony seat that isn’t directly on top of earth. The only earth she’s feeling is the dirt between her toes.
I think it's also because she can hear/sense his weight in his footsteps so that mightve also played a factor
She can probably feel how huge he is
You wanna run that one by me one more time?
He said what he said, don't make it weird
I mean, she was a professional wrestler for a while....
Yeah dude. She foot stomped the most elaborate sand castle I’ve ever seen into existence in one go. She’s got an ear for detail.
I imagine bigger people walk differently then lighter people and toph can definitely tell the difference
Can you not?
Tell me something, the first time you saw the king of Omashu episode, did you have any idea how buff Bumi was thanks to his voice? Or were you just as surprised as Aang was when Bumi pulled off his royal robes to reveal his chiseled torso?
Bumi literally changes his voice after taking off his clothes. It was a ruse to downplay his abilities.
I mean he did sound like a buff guy.
It's coding. If you consume enough fiction and try to pattern recognize hard enough, you will be able to too. And these sorts of trends can sorta be applied to real life too. I can do that too maybe I’m the greatest earthebender alive as well?
Tell me something, the first time you saw the king of Omashu episode, did you have any idea how buff Bumi was thanks to his voice? Or were you just as surprised as Aang was when Bumi pulled off his royal robes to reveal his chiseled torso?
You’re confusing the term buff for the term cut. Bumi isn’t buff, the liver king is buff.
Well, if it is a really buff guy, then yes
she's not like, using divination or anything it's literally just like she says, he sounds like a buff guy his voice is similar to what the voice of a buff guy would be
Tell me something, the first time you saw the king of Omashu episode, did you have any idea how buff Bumi was thanks to his voice? Or were you just as surprised as Aang was when Bumi pulled off his royal robes to reveal his chiseled torso?
bumi does not have a voice similar to that a buff guy would typically have
I assume there is a correlation between physical strength/build and depth of voice due to testosterone
I think he just sounds like a buff dude.
Yeah that’s called testosterone
That is normal...
She literally says, he SOUNDS like one, not that he is one.

Most human beings associate deep masculine voices with large men. Even if it's not always true. It's no different than assuming teenage girls will have high-pitched voices. The larger the person the larger the vibrations when they are walking
She was on a balcony seat and he was on a wooden stage. There’s no earth through which she can feel the vibrations.
It’s just vibrations vibrations can go thru basically anything including wood
That doesn’t necessarily mean Toph can feel those vibrations. Her whole thing is feeling the vibrations in the earth in order to sense her surroundings in a way similar to sight.
Eh still also she can hear footsteps too
Did toph even like the play or was she super bored? As a deaf person I hate plays because I don't hear what they're saying being blind must be worse
Nah Toph loved it because it was a propaganda piece that just mocked all her friends so it was hilarious to her. Also the fact they made her a ripped to shit buff guy complimented her

Echo location let's her see the outlines of people, that's how she was able to grab aangs sash and blindfold him
She can’t echolocate, she feels the vibrations in the earth. Which she can’t do in this scene because the actors are on a wooden stage.
She stood up so she was using her feet and the vibrations from standing up to see whether hes a buff guy But also peoples voices are usually deeper if theyre buff.
>“My name is Toph cause it sounds like tough!” Does that sound like a man who takes multiple trips to take the groceries in?
Normal people can do this, so yes Toph can.

Yeah but he’s very old and senile. A young build bud in the prime of his life is gonna sound different for sure.
No, it’s likely stereotyping based on his voice.
She says like a guy, not "Im played by a big guy", she's just using her previous experiences to make judgments, that's all
._. ahh really she can't see
She can definitely approximate the actors heights
This scene is great! They are all unhappy with their portrayals in the play and Toph is loving hers. The first play scene with Toph where she (he) screams was hilarious too. Watched it with my kids and they were rolling!

The sounds of beef is VERY distinctive
I imagine we all can. Feels like it’s works about 80% of the time.
Can she not sense the shape of someone's body with her seismic sense? From the way the circles move over people when they represent it visually, it sure seems like she could.
Her seismic sense can’t possibly work when she’s in a balcony seat and he’s on a wooden stage.
Why not? vibration move through wood as well as stone and m toph is badass enough to be able to feel that from a balcony.
I mean the guy in the scene sounds buff she might not be able to tell with everybody but i can see a blind person telling that guys buffness
People constantly have a pre-conceived notion of what someone sounds like and have a disonance if you are too off from expectations. But, a blind girl can't make an educated guess. A lot of people can't handle the Japanese voice of Goku. It's weird to hear what Putin actually sounds like.
Or maybe that it was just a dude's voice?
What part of "Greatest Earthbender Alive" don't you understand
If you can’t tell by someone’s voice, you need to check your common sense.
If not the voice, Toph may have been able to put character to body after that. The giant mofo would just be someone on stage until they had lines. At which point Toph could put the two together. "I sound like a guy." <- hearing voice "A really buff guy." <- connecting voice to other senses
I always hated filler episodes that summarized prior episodes, but the creators were geniuses when they created this episode. The joke behind the giant earth bender was that everyone who was beaten by Toph lied about her description.
Yes, when you talk you produce vibrations that she can pick up on while their touching the ground.
To be fair most buff guys do have a somewhat distinct voice it seems
If you hear hulk hogan talking, or a flamboyant gay man talking, you’re gonna sit here and tell me you don’t mentally picture a difference.
It be a educated guess that she got right
The same way daredevil can tell if women are hot ![gif](giphy|biFqX4pk75cME)
This is an ability called having ears
And you can’t?
Testosterone
if i was just sitting in the dark and i randomly hear a really deep masculine voice that’s probably wut i’d think too
I mean she was known to go to the Earthbending Competitions, she probably got used to being near the tough type of men who would always boast about their size and strength which I’m guessing means they used manly voices for intimidation and respect.
Nah. Just look at Brock Lesnar. Everything is buff and intimidating except for his voice. Sounds like a math teacher.
the loud and deep voice probably gave it away
Toph doesnt know how big they are just how big they sound.
She sees through sound
