That’s a replica of Lady Gaga’s costume when she held concerts in Thailand [https://imgur.com/a/KtGLdeA](https://imgur.com/a/KtGLdeA)

A guide told me that it represents how the Wai has become synonymous with Thainess as Lady Gaga used it when dressed like that in her Bangkok concert. The Wai is a representation of the Thainess, not the costume representing soi cowboy

unidentified_yama

Exactly this. I remember there some Thais were pretty offended by that. She even got banned by Thai authorities I think. Now people feel pretty neutral about it. Crazy how fast things changed. The museum should provide more context. This was relevant a decade ago but not anymore now.

adamwintle

It’s funny and also shocking when you first step into that room at the museum, especially with your elderly parents!

EcstaticBadger

I've seen this. If I remember correctly, the main exhibition at the Siam Museum was something like "What is Thainess?". And it felt like an attempt at getting (Thai) people to really think about and question certain ideas regarding Thai identity, culture, beliefs, and the juxtapostion between traditional and contemporary thought. This room in particular had maybe 30 mannequins in various outfits, ranging from old or traditional outfits, like royal ceremoniual dress, Ayutthayan attire or khon dancers, to more modern outfits like school uniform, songkran shirt, or a suit and tie. And just off to the left of this is Ronald McDonald wai-ing. I think this room was asking people "Can all of these outfits/costumes represent Thailand and Thainess in some way? Are some more 'Thai' than others?" I guess this outfit worn by Lady Gaga was supposed to be particularly provocative.

Womenarentmad

Op went to the museum but didn’t bother to read the signs 😂

seabass160

its not on the signs or the audio guide but the staff explain it if you find 1

Hecalledmecat

It is. It’s all in there and it’s very detailed

Calamity-Bob

I like the “Siam Square girl”. Thanks for this. Good explanation. It’s a well done exhibit - the food room is particularly well done - and I recommend it to any visitor.

Lady GaGa is kinda patron saintess of queers, so that is not entirely wrong.
