I don't know if I would exactly call it a 'hipster' area, but The Yard in Ari is a progressive eco hostel that hosts local organic markets, clothing swaps, yoga events, and small local artists for performances. The owners are really cool, and there are great food spots surrounding it in every direction. It's a fantastic hostel for meeting people. Oh and about 4 minutes walk to the bts.

KozureOkami

I lived in the condo next door for 5 years, Som and the team are great.

srmcho

Amazing! Thank you. This sounds like it’s definitely in the direction I was looking for

UnlikelyFix

I highly recommend checking it out. The employees collectively run the hostel and have all been involved in the business since its conception. Amazing people, great area, comfortable accommodations without the fuss of touristy gimmicks. There are a lot of locals who stay there as well. Even on those nights where you don't want to do anything, it's great just sitting around with the staff in the garden drinking a beer or smoking. I sound like an advetisement, but for my first four years in Thailand, I spent Christmas at The Yard because it just felt like a home base for me.

srmcho

Aw that’s beautiful! Yeah I haven’t stayed in a hostel in ages since I normally travel with my partner now and wasn’t sure about a party hostel since I’m not huge into partying or drink anymore so this sounds perfect

stever71

I really don't think the hippy vibe is Bangkok at all. Maybe Khao San 30 years ago?

srmcho

Haha I figured, I haven’t really seen it in the few times I’ve been in Bangkok but figured it’s worth asking since Bangkok is big and there are a lot of spots I haven’t explored!

fatmyke

I would say Ari too. But to me it does have a hipster feeling instead of hippie

Rooflife1

It used to be hipster. It’s now been taken over my middle class Thais and the UN. Not what it used to be.

srmcho

🥲 oh damn

Looks interesting!

You can hop onto a boat at a few different points along the river, and bicycles are very, very cheap to rent when you get to the other side. Be sure to check out the park and the fighting fish gallery. It’s a really serene little area.

srmcho

Thank you for the rec!

Leo1309

You should see the area near So Heng Thai mansion ( on the opposite side from Iconsiam)

srmcho

I’ll check it out ty!

I’m sure this same question, with some very minor variation, has been posted on here three times in the last week *screams into the abyss about using the search function, only for the same question to be rewritten again 2 days later*

TheGregSponge

SCREAMS INTO THE ABYSS!!! Why don't some people actually understand that most people come on here to not only find some info, but to engage in some social back and forth on both the asking and answering side? Of all the annoying characters on the internet it's the ones who write the "Google is your friend" type of comments. Why do they even bother typing if they aren't going to engage in the conversation? I'm sure this same type of comment has been written two or three times today.

srmcho

😂😂

rob40000

Wrong

srmcho

🤷‍♀️ I tried to search but when I looked for things specific to hippy + bangkok I didn’t see any posts that gave me the answer I was hoping for. I included hipster (which there may be posts about) as an alternative.

PearlsB4Pigs

You're fine, don't worry about it - everyone is angry here. :)

TheGregSponge

I would think that the area where you cross over the Khlong (Ong Ang or San Saeb?) going north away from KSR onto Sam Sen Rd. would be good for those looking for the more laid back hippy-ish vibe. You can keep going down Sam Sen all the way at least to Khlong Krung Kasem and Thewarat Market Pier and there are lots of cafes and guest houses out the way and it's much quieter and laid back than KSR but only a short walk or one stop ferry ride to that area if you want it. You can stroll through area with Thais hanging outside their homes with some street vendors and spot some guest houses tucked away down some small sois.

srmcho

Amazing! Thank you for the rec, this def sounds up my alley 😊 I can’t wait to check it out. I really like Bangkok but overall I feel like I haven’t found a spot that resonates with me and I was hoping to find some new neighborhoods that would be cool to check out and was having a hard time deciding bc Bangkok is so big so I appreciate you and the other commenters who took the time to give me some helpful tips!

TheGregSponge

Cool. Rereading my directions I realize they are kind of vague if you don't know the area well. If you Google Lamphu Tree house Boutique Hotel that is the area I am referring. I have walked through a number of times. Definitely a cool and chill vibe and a short walk to the water taxi if you need a cheap and fast ride down to Central World and New Bangkok. Have a good visit wherever you stay.

No_name70

I third the mention of Ari. I believe the OP mixed the word hippy and hipster, as only KSR would come closest to this description in BKK.

No_name70

Ouch, I hurt someone's feelings.

srmcho

What I would love is more of the hippy/spiritual/laidback vibes but thought that might be hard to find in BKK so then I was also asking about hipster in hopes of then finding a neighborhood that is cool/laidback/up and coming/local/not overrun by a lot of tourists since I’d much prefer to just have a low key couple of days 😅

srmcho

May I ask where KSR is?

No_name70

Ok, np. He closest to a hipster vibe would be Ari. There's a BTS there, and you can do a search online beforehand to get a sense of the area. KSR = Khao San rd That is definitely the closest to a hippy vibe. Located in old Bangkok near Democracy Monument

srmcho

Ahhh gotcha. Yeah sounds like Ari might be the way to go. I very briefly walked through KSR last year on my way to catch the night bus to surat Thani and that was not really my vibe 😂 although maybe it’s different during the day than at night

No_name70

Just to expand on Ari, some will feel that the area around Ari is no different than any other, as usually one sees the charm and feels the vibe after it's explored. KSR is quite sparce during the day. Though, I'd say the real charm of that area is the other connecting soi of Ram Buttri, since it snakes through the area with a calmer/chiller vibe.

srmcho

Nice! I’ll have to check that area out. Is Ram Buttri more of a spot to explore during the day or evening?

No_name70

Go in the evening. It's a more mature vibe and not such a shit show as KSR
