Overpriced, over hyped food. Crab omelets for 1,000 baht ? Tom yum soup for over 1,000 baht?
I’ll go to my local and pay for equally delicious food for 30% of this price and wait 0 minutes to be seated.
I am happy of what she did for Thai Street food for people who didnt know Thai food and respect her for that, but yeah nothing she serves is that special or worth the wait (anymore) since you can get it anywhere in Bangkok and it will tast as good or better.
These individuals are following a heard mentality, it’s not really about the food, it’s a status, status to brag that they can afford expensive stupid food. Bunch of simpletons.
I’ve seen a pizza restaurant like that, where idiots wait 60 minutes at least just to have bread with cheese and some flavorings on top.
To each their own though. Why does it bother you so much? If someone wants to go take a selfie with Jay Fi and wait 6 hours, what’s it to you? If it brings them joy, then so be it.
😂😂
Chill dude chill! We just provided a brief psychological analysis to the type of people.
I don’t give a hoot who goes where, it doesn’t bother me the slightest.
Amazing. After I’ve ordered some fried rice, Tom yum, stir fried morning glory, couple beers etc then I’m usually at the 500-600 baht mark 😅 I think without a few beers then maybe it’s possible at around 300 baht or less :)
Did the same but had to wait an hour and a half because some TV star/model, her family, and her entourage were taking up four tables. Plus they got a metric ton of take home. Plus side was we got the table right next to the cook station so it was totally lunch and a show.
It was more of “I ate at a Netflix famous Michelin star restaurant” than the food. I wouldn’t do it again, but I didn’t mind the experience. Everyone else in line is super excited also, meeting new people from all over the world.
I wouldn’t go again! But it was good. But people are right, the price is crazy for Thailand. They use the highest quality ingredients, which you won’t get at any street food vendor. My favorite part was chatting with all the other people from different countries and making new friends. The restaurant staff was not the friendliest.
Overall, an experience I would do once.
Highest quality? Lol OK I know where she gets her ingredients, I know because as a former employee, she just gets her crab and such from the local markets. Just standard as everyone does.
That’s it for me. Time to go home! My favorite part was a Tuk Tuk food tour I booked on TripAdvisor, tried so many dishes! There’s a place next to Jay Fai called Thimpsamai, which apparently has award winning Pad Thai
This was with out a doubt the biggest tourist trap I have ever gotten suckered into. My wife wanted to go sooo bad. I just remember her apologizing profusely as I paid a 3k baht bill for subpar food and the privilege of standing in the blazing heat for 3 hours. I honestly felt bad for her because of how rotten she felt for making us do this.
That’s the power of Michelin hype lol. Making tens and hundreds of people wait in the heat and pollution and throw away a couple of hours of their lives waiting.
My personal belief is that i wouldn't travel or wait more than 30 min in a queue. You can always get something similar, maybe not as good, but almost as good, just a couple steps away. Or just goto a more expensive restaurant with no wait. Theres just too many good places to eat at, unless your entire travel is based on eating food. If not, save time for sight seeing by eating at places that aren't as busy or far away, its always good, especially if its your first time in thailand.
Me either until today! There were about 4 ladies waiting in line for others. One was waiting in line for a tour group of Chinese tourists, they got dropped off right as the restaurant opened and didn’t have to wait in line much longer
People judge whether it's worth standing in a queue and roughly how long it will take by how many people are ahead of them.
If suddenly 30 people replace what was 1 person, your remaining waiting time went up by a huge amount, so you face a choice of whether to wait longer than expected or cut your loses by leaving, losing the time you already spent waiting.
1 person waiting for 2 or 3 doesn’t increase the person behind’s waiting time much . A group of maybe 20, 30 vastly increases waiting times for people behind. But realistically i probably wouldn’t complain
Because it is public sidewalk. It is for people to walk not for a restaurant to operate. The restaurant owner is famous and very rich but never even move to other location. This kind of restaurants never pay tax as well.
They all exploit society. Moreover, most such shops make the sidewalks dirty. And they often secretly dump oil into drains, causing flooding when it rains. I never purchase anything from them in my life.
I think the only reason why people line up here is that so they can brag that they get to eat on a One Star Michelin restaurant. I mean I always read a lot that there are others that are equally or even better than Jay Fai's.
PS you can recommend some here. Planning to visit in a couple of months. Thanks.
I love Jay Fai personally. She's such a fascinating person and getting to see her at work is special. The dry congee is next level. I want to try the whole menu over time because some dishes I didn't enjoy. I would never wait for hours though personally (for anything). We always use the line waiters. They will even sit at your table and order for you before you arrive. After they order it still takes another 1-2 hours for the food to arrive. The service is hilariously bad, but the servers have really good rapport with the line waiters. Jay Fai is top 5 in the world for me. The random road side pad krapow grandma is right there with her for 50 baht dishes as well, but it's just a different vibe.
How do you get ahold of the other line waiters? One thing I didn’t like was one of the line waiters rushing us to close our out check, I understand we didn’t want to take too long to allow others their chance. But this lady came over as soon as the last grain of rice was eaten and asked if we were done, then proceeded to talk to the servers and get us moving.
tourists trap😂expensive or not paying a 100Usd for a plate of crab omelette is a little much even Michelin⭐️ in HK is not this expensive but yeah if you’ve got the money 💴 I guess that’s not the problem at all
At this point still no air-conditioner is beyond my understanding. You’re rich and famous now. Why don’t you upgrade your eatery? Is this how she uphold 1 Michelin star?
I went for the food, and the crab omelette was delicious. The Tom yom soup was also great. Sure, it was expensive, but it was vacation so I didn’t really care. Compared to other Michelin restaurants that give tiny portions, this was worth it to me.
Used to visit this before the Netflix and Michelin Hoopla. The food was quite good, though the crab omelet was 500 at the time and I though that was expensive. My fav dish there was the Kow Tom Hang though (ข้าวต้มแห้ง)
I’m someone who has framed travel itineraries around my dining, but I personally cannot imagine any food that would be worth waiting that long for and most definitely not worth waiting from 3am.
You can see this evetytime a brand release a new product like an iPhone, or swatch/omega watch, I don't believe the 75yrs old grandma is queueing up for a new iPhone or watch 😂

You can, but personally I'd just go somewhere else with equally delicious food, at one of any number of restaurants in Bangkok.
My kind of logic.
Do you have any nice recommendations?
restaurant in เยาวราช road and บรรทัดทอง will be better for journey.
worachak area has a few good places.

I dont think frozen food is “basically” the same as freshly cooked food 🤦🏻

Tom yum soul at 300? Man that’s still a rip off.
I sold my soul for less than that ...
As stated, this place is controversial. But you have to hand it to her, that place is packed.

seems you struck a nerve my man
My local Tai, I pay 5% of that, lol
Cool?

I went there during Covid and was the only customer. 🤣🤣
This is what we did too! All the benefits and none of the drawbacks and all it took was a global pandemic…
Did the same but had to wait an hour and a half because some TV star/model, her family, and her entourage were taking up four tables. Plus they got a metric ton of take home. Plus side was we got the table right next to the cook station so it was totally lunch and a show.
I really never understood the hype over other Michelin-alike local places where you have to fight with tourists for hours just to have a meal.
Don't think it's worth the wait
It was more of “I ate at a Netflix famous Michelin star restaurant” than the food. I wouldn’t do it again, but I didn’t mind the experience. Everyone else in line is super excited also, meeting new people from all over the world.
well if that's your boat you're going to be floating in it for 3 hours outside. bring an umbrella lol
Exactly. No harm to anyone if I want to wait in line lol
Let us know what you think after you went there!

Oh well. What’s your point then? You’ll never change anyone’s mind. If someone wants to go, they’ll go. Your comment on reddit comes off as hating.
Glad you enjoyed it for the experience. What's next on the agenda?
That’s it for me. Time to go home! My favorite part was a Tuk Tuk food tour I booked on TripAdvisor, tried so many dishes! There’s a place next to Jay Fai called Thimpsamai, which apparently has award winning Pad Thai
haha well, sounds like you got the full experience! safe travels!
It was an amazing trip. Everything was amazing!

She apologized and you still paid 🤣 or was it after you paid 🤣 jokes on you
just find another place to eat. i know she is very famous but for me that is not worth for the price and waiting.
What a circus. Ugh.

Very interesting .. I have never heard of this Thanks for sharing
Me either until today! There were about 4 ladies waiting in line for others. One was waiting in line for a tour group of Chinese tourists, they got dropped off right as the restaurant opened and didn’t have to wait in line much longer
One person saving space for a group doesn't sound fair...
Why not?
People judge whether it's worth standing in a queue and roughly how long it will take by how many people are ahead of them. Can you share her Whatsapp? I've been a few times and definitely would pay for someone to wait for me so I can do other things.
Just DM’d it to you!
hey do you mind sharing the Whatsapp for me as well?
Done! Sent the screenshots. Good luck!
Hello! Can you DM me the WhatsApp too? Thanks.
Done! Let me know if you received them
We are going to Thailand in July. Please send me her contact
Done. Please let me know if you received it
I normally use the grab delivery or food panda services. It takes about 30-40 min in my nice hotel room with AC on.
From Jay Fai!?
yeah you can use grab for this
As a Thai, no matter how delicious this restaurant is, I will definitely not go to a restaurant that is open on a public sidewalk like this.
How come?
Because of the pollution from traffic?
Because it is public sidewalk. It is for people to walk not for a restaurant to operate. The restaurant owner is famous and very rich but never even move to other location. This kind of restaurants never pay tax as well.
What about all the other street food vendors? She at least has a venue, unlike the others
They all exploit society. Moreover, most such shops make the sidewalks dirty. And they often secretly dump oil into drains, causing flooding when it rains. I never purchase anything from them in my life.
She has a few dishes available at 7-11 for 69 baht. Wait time is about 2 minutes in the microwave....
You know it’s not the same.
We got a massage down the street after we put our name in. That's my recommendation
Ohhhh that’s smart. We just got some coffee at the coffee shop across street

This place is so mid, i thought it would be something special but it was so basic and I say this as a Thai lol, way too expensive too
There are people who do this in the states. I'm sure it happens in europe as well, as other places.
Anyone else do a similar omelette?
I’ve had other crab omelettes, and while cheaper, they were not as good. But that was just me

Overrated Netflix joint...for the price and taste you better off going to a hotel restaurant.
tourists trap😂expensive or not paying a 100Usd for a plate of crab omelette is a little much even Michelin⭐️ in HK is not this expensive but yeah if you’ve got the money 💴 I guess that’s not the problem at all

FYI, a lot of restaurant also uses QueQ app to line up digitally.
Interesting, maybe they should implement it!
Baaa...
May I ask if you went for the food or for the chance of taking selfies for your Instagram?
I went for the food, and the crab omelette was delicious. The Tom yom soup was also great. Sure, it was expensive, but it was vacation so I didn’t really care. Compared to other Michelin restaurants that give tiny portions, this was worth it to me.
Do they no longer take reservations?
Not that I know of. First come first served, but you can pay someone to wait in queue for you
What a shame. Jay Fai used to do reservations.
I think I remember seeing that somewhere, but I couldn’t find anything about reservations
Used to visit this before the Netflix and Michelin Hoopla. The food was quite good, though the crab omelet was 500 at the time and I though that was expensive. My fav dish there was the Kow Tom Hang though (ข้าวต้มแห้ง)

Overrated overpriced. Not that good even
To each their own. People keep bashing it, but there’s still a line every day.
Haha what a good business idea. I hate waiting in lines, so this sounds pretty cool
I agree, if there’s a market for it, why not?
You can see this evetytime a brand release a new product like an iPhone, or swatch/omega watch, I don't believe the 75yrs old grandma is queueing up for a new iPhone or watch 😂
I think you overpaid. 400 - 600 baht is daily wages.
Oh well? I won’t die and wish I had an extra 1,000 baht in my pocket.
The more you know...
