Unpopular opinion here, but he deserves it: at the end of the day, last year was a WC year, and Messi happened to win that and perform great in it. I'm aware that it definetly isn't Haalands fault that Norway didn't qualify and play in the WC, but like I said, it was a WC year after all. That's unlucky for him, but the WC is the most important trophy there is, so the performance during the WC is more important than the performance during UCL, IMO.
Also, one has to admit that Haaland played great in the league all year round but lacked impact during the more important UCL games, so there is that. Messi on the other hand played well for the most part during his UCL season too but was eliminated too early.
