It sucks that the previous owners didn't spay and neuter the barn cats but at least oop is taking steps to take care of that and the kittens are hopefully young enough they can be successfully fully socialized though I guess if the mama cats are more strays than ferals it should make it easier...

PrideofCapetown

TIL that there is a Jorts version of Sister Wives šŸ¤Æ

Too many to butter!

Pretty_Marzipan_555

This comment has me absolutely guffawing, thank you for that!

Hide the butter!

Jeans over there frantically looking for contraception ideas...

Mammoth_Might8171

I can imagine Jean frantically grooming one Jorts, then running over to the next Jorts to groom him, and then the next oneā€¦ šŸ˜‚

Pinsalinj

Yeah, Jeans can handle one Jorts, but 21?!

Stormy8888

Call HR! Oh wait, that's not the right Jorts!

Stormy8888

I loved that saga, but I don't see it on the Flair Origins anymore.

TheClayKnight

We might need to get the mods to fix that

Kindly_Zucchini7405

Trying to explain The Saga of Jorts to my very not-online parents really highlighted how ridiculous the whole thing was.

Stormy8888

Orange cats have rights too! And some people think buttering a cat up literally will work for some reason.

herekittykitty250

Jorts..has an Instagram.Ā  Maybe not as funny as the original saga, but still enjoyable šŸ˜‚

Kindly_Zucchini7405

Also a twitter. Sadly last I checked he wasn't super active on bluesky, so I haven't seen much of him since twitter closed its gates.

ZaryaBubbler

He's doing well, had a little carpet ride on a screen window cover recently that resulted in a member of the public having a Jorts related scratching. He's okay though, vet came to make sure he has all his toes and he hid under a chair for a bit.

ZaryaBubbler

The Twitter is hilarious and might be the only reason I still go on it

king_kong123

My humane society serves a large area that includes rural and urban areas and unfortunately this occurrence is not that unusual. People will dump cats on farmers and unless the farmer notices really quickly you can have a mini cat explosion. A lot of times the cats will starve, get eaten or will get caught in equipment and die. People don't realize that you have to still feed barn/warehouse cats.

Flat_Bumblebee_6238

I have an acreage and someone that Iā€™ve never met called and asked if I would take 4 litters of kittens, ā€œbecause Iā€™ve heard farms need cats.ā€ No. No I will not.

king_kong123

At least they called. I don't understand how anyone could think that a farme would suddenly want 20 cats.

ColeDelRio

Four LITTERS?!? Spaying is so much cheaper omg.

Yandere_Matrix

I seen what happens when a place is overrun by cats. They are sickly, boney, and of course finding random dead cats are a norm. From experiencing that myself, I am all for spay and neuter or euthanizing stray cats because I rather they donā€™t suffer a slow and painful death. And letā€™s not forget that we still have people who poison the cats as well instead of calling animal control to deal with it too. Itā€™s sad.

moonprincess420

One of my cats was found as a kitten on one of my former coworkers land. He had an old farm he bought and he said people were constantly dumping pregnant cats, litters of kittens and even multiple dogs on his land. There was at least two other times while I worked there he had posted on that he found more kittens on his land and asking if anyone wanted to adopt. It makes me so mad that people canā€™t take care of their animals and get them fixed and then dump them on someone elseā€™s land to take care of.

WreckedOnTheDeck

Exactly. Ignorant people trash farmers for not taking on the cost and expense of caring for a bunch of cats that they donā€™t even realize are there until there are dozens of them. Itā€™s not their fault people dump animals in the country

maxdragonxiii

especially if the farmer have a huge space with many tiny places to hide. you'll be surprised how often you don't see a cat... until you see one. suddenly 4 or 5 comes out of the woodwork when you shake a cat treat meaning for your cat in the barn somewhere.

ColeDelRio

Which is unfortunate. While I originally supported barn cats because it gives feral/semiferal cats a place, ultimately, what you say happens a lot. They get no care.

UnfortunateSyzygy

lots of places will spay/neuter ferals abd adopt them out as barn cats. Barn cats are still helpful to keeping rodents under control, you just don't need them in the double digits

scarrlet

My mom has gotten a couple of spayed "barn buddies" from the local shelter and they are great cats. They also ended up becoming fairly friendly even though they are adopted out with no guarantees because the were ferals. They like to chill with her while she milks the goats. And of course they get food and vet care like any other cat.

ColeDelRio

Yes but the point I was trying to make was that they still need to be monitored to make sure they are getting something to eat and go to the vet if they're sick.

UnfortunateSyzygy

Oh, yeah, you're correct there. Barn cats def still need care, just not the same as a housecat. They're working animals, I guess? You need to keep a standard of care similar to like, a laying chicken on a good farm. Check in, tend when needed, but you can mostly leave them to their own devices. I thought you meant "no barn cats at all".

IAmHerdingCatz

Yeah, I live in an area famous for cheese (and cows) and people love to abandon their cats at the local dairies. A few years ago we were asked to help at a place that said they had "maybe 20 or so" cats. It turned out to be over 50 adults and literally hundreds of kittens. It was a nightmare for our tiny rescue--many of the kittens didn't make it and had genetic problems and birth defects. I ended up with one of the kittens. He has Osteogenesis Imperfecta. (Someday I'd like to have a normal cat.)

maxdragonxiii

mmm... cheese. it might be inbreeding that was going on, resulting in this.

IcedWarlock

In BRIE ding

maxdragonxiii

DANG IT! I'm disappointed I didn't think of this.

Kindly_Zucchini7405

It sometimes feels like people don't understand the difference between barn cats and resort cats. Resort cats are spoiled beyond belief and get regular checkups. Barn cats aren't nearly so well cared for, if they get care at all.

lucyfell

This reminds me of reading Anne of Green Gables and at one point Anne says, ā€œbut you HAVE to drown kittens sometimes or there would simply be too many catsā€ and I did not understand that AT ALL. And now I do because what else could you do back in the day when you couldnā€™t spay you cats.

JadieJang

OMG, imagine showing up at your PTSD retreat and being inundated by a ginger kitten army.

VoteBitch

I donā€™t have PTSD but have been burned out and if I had had the opportunity to hang out with a bunch of cats as part of my rehabā€¦ PURE BLISS!

MatttheBruinsfan

I just hope they aren't triggered by all the noise of cats knocking objects over and falling from high perches!

sarexsays

Bob Barker is rolling in his graveā€¦

Elphaba78

I live on a farm and thereā€™s a longtime feral colony next door. We canā€™t catch the adults, but we can catch the kittens, so almost all of our cats came from this colony (and most of them are orange, come to think of it!) from a very young age and theyā€™re all domesticated, fed, medicated, vaccinated, and loved dearly. One of them, whoā€™s my absolute baby, is one Iā€™ve had since he was a newborn - he fit in my palm! We borrowed an incubator from my vet and fed him every 1.5-2 hours. Heā€™s now 5 years old, extremely vocal, and likes to sleep either on my head or around my neck, both of which are habits I encouraged when he was a baby without realizing the consequences.

CatmoCatmo

Fun cat facts: Most orange cats are males. I would say probably 9 out of every 10 we see at the vet clinic where I work, are dudes. Obviously this was a unique situation where there was a lot of inbreeding and isolation going on, but yeah. If you see an orange cat, count on it being a Tom, and if itā€™s a Queen, be pleasantly surprised. Opposite of this - most Calicos are female. Also, cats are opportunistic ovulaters. Meaning, they can begin ovulating when a male comes around. Indoor intact female Queens will still ovulate without a Tom around, but not nearly as often. This is why cats can reproduce so rapidly. They donā€™t have to wait for the right time in their cycle, their bodies can force it. Unlike dogs who ovulate 1-2 times per year and thatā€™s it. Also, the gestation period for cats, and dogs, is around 63 days, and they can get pregnant again fairly quickly. This also attributes to how cats seem to multiply so fast. That, and their litter sizes. Itā€™s unusual for a cat to have only one or two kittens. They tend to have bigger litters. Now go forth and spay and neuter your pets! (In the words of Bob Barker.)

DohnJoggett

> Also, cats are opportunistic ovulaters. Meaning, they can begin ovulating when a male comes around. Indoor intact female Queens will still ovulate without a Tom around, but not nearly as often. > > This is why cats can reproduce so rapidly. They donā€™t have to wait for the right time in their cycle, their bodies can force it. And they can do it while nursing a litter, overlap litters, and abandon the first litter. Happened to the matriarch for my brother's cat-barn. They couldn't spay her before she had the first litter, then she got pregnant with the second litter. Only 2 kittens survived from the first litter, and I don't know their current status. She might not be a great mama, but she's soooooo friendly. I don't know if I've ever met a cat so lovey-dovey and usually barn cats are somewhere between "standoffish" and "skittish." I think they also have "2 suspected deadbeat dad kitties" like OOP they can't catch to get neutered. They spend a lot more time roaming and hunting than the female cats that hang around the cat-barn eating cat food or hanging out in the safety pen/heatlamp area safe-er from predators.

Four_beastlings

They have bicornate uteruses, so they can get double pregnant. None of the articles I read was conclusive on whether the second, smaller litter can survive the birth of the first litter though.

fishebake

my mom fostered a momma who had a double litter like that. two kittens were visibly older and bigger when we got them. Miss those babies, and momma was just the sweetest. she didnā€™t have a tail, and we figured it was natural due to the fact some of her kittens didnā€™t either!

maxdragonxiii

if I remember, some of them might not be able to survive because of the resources mom don't have to feed the second or first litter.

Four_beastlings

I seem to recall that the problem was more that the contractions of birth for the older litter push the younger litter out

Gingersnapandabrew

That is similar to what happened with my old cats, except they were the second litter and the mum tried to eat them. Thankfully they were all rescued and adopted out.

Donkeh101

My ginger ninja is a lovely lady. But I like to say she is strawberry blonde ā€¦ at 12, that orange is starting to fade. Every vet she has been to, I have to tell them ā€œNo, sheā€™s a she!!!ā€ Itā€™s quite funny. I did meet her mum, this sleek orange short haired cat. This one turned into a puff ball!

sunshineparadox_

My ginger girl I used to tell she was so special, that most gingers were like her friend (did she remember him? she nearly doubled him in life lived). I like to think it made her proud. But she was distrustful and scared when I first met her - my husband said his ex of 3.5 years had never *seen* her and her first owner had been terrible to her - and it sticks out to me when she was pregnant, she let me - a near stranger - near her postpartum and with the kittens. Did she trust so few people that she let me in her inner circle? Was I the only female she thought would take care of *her*, too? The guys were good with the kittens, but like happens with people sometimes, mom got forgotten. When we adopted her, she was still kinda cold to me but loved me in her way. When I was pregnant, she stepped up to me the way she could in the way I did for her. She settled into being a beloved family cat with a small child at the end. Her second to last day - I swear she knew, she wiggled under my daughter's arm and slept with her all night. Her children are 12 or 13 now, all doing well. She succumbed to a cancer she beat once before - and did without painkillers after the fact. Idk how she managed that, I would've eaten the crushed up tramadol in her shoes.

Quothhernevermore

Isn't it such an amazing experience to have a momma cat trust you like that? We had a stray hanging around that my dad said he didn't want in the house - until one day she waltzed in and he didn't have the heart to make her leave. She had babies in the corner of my bedroom about a week later and was immediately trustful of us. Those three boys will turn 13 this year :)

paprikastew

Very informative! I had an orange girl and, contrary to stereotype, she was one of the smartest cats I've ever known!

Tiny_Teacup

I'm pretty sure the females are hoarding the allotted braincells for ginger kitties.

Mostly-cupcakes

Iā€™m pretty sure smart orange cats are actually tabbies under witness purrtection

paprikastew

That makes a lot of sense!

bookace

My orange girl must have been playing hooky the day they handed out the braincells šŸ˜‚ She has only one thought in her head at all times and that is: "When food?"

TheNightTerror1987

Another fun fact -- I have three female orange tabbies! My mother adopted the first one, Addie, in 2006, and she subsequently adopted me, she's half orange, half white. Then came Ella in the summer of 2021, she's a former stray currently on her sixth home since being rescued, and she's mostly white, with a red hat and tail, and some red patches on her body. And finally there was Ivy! I took one look at her picture, saw the Late Great Rose looking back at me, and *had* to have her. She just happened to be another female red tabby, this time solid red with a bit of cream around her mouth. Now I just need a flamepoint to round out my collection . . . One vet told me she was actually taught in vet school that *all* oranges are male (very reassuring to hear the vet working on your cat had such a quality education, let me tell you!!) but that female orange tabbies are unusually common around here. That would explain Addie, but Ella is from a city a 3 1/2 hour drive from here and Ivy was from a feral colony an hour away . . .

TouchMyAwesomeButt

We didn't learn female red cats are so rare, and thus valuable, until our female red cat got kittens and someone told us. We did spay her after one litter. She had three fully red kittens, all male. But someone did tell us to maybe not do that and just keep breeding her.Ā  But I agree that this lot are probably well inbred.

poison_camellia

Brb putting "opportunistic ovulator" in my twitter bio

MsDucky42

When I got my current girl-cat, there was a unspayed Tom hanging around outside. (Sweet guy, belonged to somebody, but loved to get treats. I digress.) Boom, she was in heat, much to the confusion of my spayed boys. I had to wait a week or so to take her in and get her sterilized... I'm glad humans aren't opportunistic ovulators. That would suck.

Immediate_Sense_2189

Oh wow didnā€™t know that about orange cats being mostly male. My husband has a female orange cat and a male orange cat (they are not from the same litter, two separate cats adopted at different times as kittens). Theyā€™re still around and are super cute šŸ˜Š

Sanz1280

I've had like 4 female ginger cats. No litter had a male ginger cat. I actually thought it was the opposite and that ginger toms are rare instead.

Stardwe

I thought all calico were female unless affected by genetic conditions! Something to do with the color patterns present in XX cromosomes

Achaion34

This is true. Itā€™s WAY more rare to see a male calico because he would have to have XXY chromosomes. Orange cats are mostly male, but youā€™re way more likely to see a female orange than a male calico.

Stardwe

I knew about a male calico that was a chimera! He was a fertile male, but a part of his genome was of a sister, and that gave him the calico pattern

Achaion34

Wow, an extra rare kitty! Was he all calico, or portions?

Stardwe

I read about him, so I'm not so sure, but this article talks about him being banned from shows! https://www.resetera.com/threads/meet-dawntreader-texas-calboy-an-intersex-chimera-male-calico-cat-who-is-fertile.802284/

Achaion34

Aww thatā€™s so sad. How wild that people would be hostile about a cat like that. Heā€™s so pretty, too.

Stardwe

Aaaa but accepting "transvestite" cats open the door to accept people too /sarcasm

Achaion34

I know itā€™s a joke, but considering itā€™s in Texas, it might be true šŸ™„

LunaPolaris

There used to be a cat group that had an offer out there of $1mil. reward for anyone who could prove they had a calico male who could produce offspring, because usually male cats with calico coats are born sterile.

AnitaDanish

I had an extremely friendly orange neighbor cat I took to calling Cousin Matthew (I started giving names to the various indoor-outdoor cats around the time Downton Abbey was big). Several years later I finally talked to the cat's person and found out "he" was a female named Peaches. I never even considered an orange queen!

Curious-Insanity413

The funny thing about most orange cats being male, a statistic I *know* about, is that I know *way* more orange female cats. We had a a small colony of gingers out the back when we first moved into our place, and most of them were female! We adopted our champagne ginger girl from them, and her (darker orange) mother is still around (and cared for by the neighbour). Then our other cat is a tuxedo rescued from a colony of strays near our friend's place, this colony was a lot more randomised in colour but didn't actually have any gingers that I know of...except for our cat's sister who our friends adopted. I think incest was involved in both cases tbh, which obviously ups the chances, but our friend's cat's old colony was definitely more varied.

enoughalready4me

Bob Barker went to my college! And all my mammals are neutered. There is a family here that owns a big furniture store & they sponsor a cheap/free spay/neuter clinic, so no excuses (if you are in St. Louis metro, Carol House Clinic). When I was a kid, our cat got pregnant and my mom used the cat to (kind of) explain the birds and the bees to us. Pretty much "it's the same for humans, except you don't have 6 at a time in a nest you built inside a twin box spring in the back bedroom."

porcelina-g

I had a male calico growing up- had no idea it was such a rare thing until he got much older!

Corfiz74

I think the fact that their inbred line is all ginger on both sides increases the chances that even the girl kittens turned out ginger. Otherwise, I find it hard to believe that the kittens would all be male. Also, I'm a bit sad that she found individual homes for all of them, and didn't factor in if there were any bonded pairs that she should have kept together. It's always sad to see bonded pairs broken up, and a lot of shelters fortunately don't even do that anymore.

Wandering_Scholar6

With a colony this large, while not impossible, I'd bet most of them are not going to be tightly bonded like that, and many are kittens so not as much of a worry.

Katapotomus

Since the ones adopting are naming them I'm going to guess Ruby and Tuesday are going as a pair. Very possible more of them went in sets as well.

Turbulent-Parsley619

At one point, there were upwards of 40 feral cats outside my house. Thank GOD now it's down to a controllable number (I think 13+ some kittens one mama cat has hidden in the barn we haven't counted) and we've been working on preventing more. There are only two un-spayed females left and one of them has never (to our knowledge) had a litter of kittens, so we assume she's just always been infertile because she was born here from that massive colony and we've never had her spayed. The other one is Mama Cat. She had last year's 5 kittens of which we had the girls spayed. Mama Cat has had kittens out in the barn because my dad saw at least two of them, and they're not little, they're big and healthy, so we'll have to try and get them to come near us to fix them as well. Fun fact tho: Having almost only male cats doesn't stop the orgies, it just turns them gay šŸ˜‰

Four_beastlings

When we got a tiny female kitten my older male cat started trying to mount her, so we took the male to be fixed because the girl was too young for it (he wasn't fixed yet because he was traumatised when we adopted him and we didn't want to add to the trauma). Afterwards it's like the girl said REVEEEEEENGE and she started chasing him and mounting him. A couple of years later I found another male on the street and sort of failed at finding him a home. The two male cats fell in love and became inseparable. When the older one died many years later the younger became very depressed for a while.

myssi24

Truth. My two females when they were both younger would get it on occasionally.

randallbabbage

If your trying to prevent more, why don't you get the mama cat spayed as well? Getting the kittens done is great, but that mama is going to keep pumping them out.

princesscatling

Might be that they can catch babies and not mama.

ConsciousBluebird473

You should really try to get the males neutered as well. Having intact males around drastically increases catfights, which can transmit FIV/FeLV throughout the whole colony.

Dana07620

This worked out so much better than I thought it was going to. I am very glad that they can afford the spay/neuters. And that such good, responsible people bought the property. Also, cats are great for PTSD. And watching kittens sleep is the most effective sleeping pill there is. EDIT: Spotted toe beans in one photo.

Nadamir

False. Having kittens sleep on you is most effective sleeping pill.

Dana07620

Nope. I was terrified I was going to squash them in my sleep. They weighed so little that I couldn't really feel them. It was an indescribable relief when they got big enough for me to safely sleep with them.

Nadamir

Ah fair. Iā€™m like a log, so once my brotherā€™s semi-feral litter fell asleep on me, I knew I wasnā€™t going anywhere for a few hours and just took a midday nap. Which I never do.

RhinoRationalization

I like it when my big kitty sleeps on me. He's like a weighted blanket with bonus features.

Dana07620

In winter, I call mine "fur covered heating pads."

KaleidoscopeGreat973

Mine would often fall asleep on me, looking exceptionally adorable and contented, shortly before I realised I had to pee. It is the cutest form of torture.

Dana07620

Been there. Done that. In this household saying, "I've got a cat on me," is an acceptable excuse not to do something or to ask for things to be brought to you.

saiph

My partner and I call this "cat privilege," e.g. "I have cat privilege, can you please refill my water glass?"

Gust_2012

"Cat privilege." I'm so stealing this! šŸ˜†

linnetkestrel

We call it being ā€œbecattedā€.

Dana07620

[There's even a song!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lgP2N62rz5I) Is that where you got it from?

BeBraveShortStuff

My sister, who made the mistake of sleeping with two kittens the first night home from rescue and got pooped on, would disagree, lol.

Dana07620

But she was asleep. So it worked.

Bored-Viking

I Assume somewhere between 1 and 100 cats is the cure for PTSD... mavbe 21 is the right number?

waterdevil19144

Douglas Adams says you're exactly half right.

Corfiz74

Yeah, I was thinking "keep the cats! If you want to treat people with PTSD, an orange kitten army is just what you need! And you got it hand delivered for free!"

llamalladyllurks

Maybe the farm was free but the ginger army cost a fortune. (And may I add that I LOVE the term "ginger army"?)

Lucky-Worth

The One Braincell army

sebeed

they're definitely getting adopted so easily bc they're orange. people fucking LOVE orange cats something fierce. they're the first to get adopted at most shelters and from most litters

MeticulousPlonker

Yeah, there really is something about orange cats, isn't there? I wanted an orange cat after my brother & sister-in-law adopted a lil orange kitten that stole my heart. But the problem is, I opened the local humane society's website and there was a grey cat listed as being 15 years old. A week or two went by and other cats would appear and then disappear from the list, but not the grey one. So I adopted her instead. She's not 15; vet says she can't be older than 10. She is, however, stupid and cuddly like the stereotype of orange cats. I love her.

sebeed

i had a sort of similar experience lol. i really wanted an orange cat, i hadn't had one before and ig i was kind of in a "gotta catch em all" state of mind about cat colors. but then we went to the shelter, and the orange cats i had looked at online were sick so that sucked, but we were in the kitten room where the non sick kittens get to roam around and get up to nonsense and this grey tabby kept yelling at me. I had just lost a grey cat after an intense illness the year before (she was barely a tabby, but there were some stripes. she had a strange coat) and when i saw his picture on the page i said "nope, i cant do a grey cat rn, no way" well. i tried to pay attention to other kittens, and got to the point where i had to hold him in order to give any other kittens attention. we left without getting any kittens. I went back the next day, and the grey kitty was still screaming, he seemed to think i was the shit. even when other people came around. and well. im a sucker for a yelling kitty apparently. This is the second time i got a kitten from a shelter and both times i got kittens that screamed at me. he turns one next week, dumb as rocks. has food anxiety, but we're working on it.

MeticulousPlonker

That's so sweet. I've always wanted to go to the humane society and let a cat pick me, but that hasn't been in the cards. I did adopt one of my (late) cats because he showed up where I was living and would scream into the open windows. Never found his owners so he became mine. I think my local humane society still isn't letting anyone inside? All the photos of adoptions online are people outside. I wish your little screaming baby good luck with his food anxiety.

MaimeM

I'm si glad you adopted her because I was fully ready to ugly cry!

MeticulousPlonker

Right?! I had to! She was described as quiet and keeping to herself but that is absolutely not the cat I received lol. She loves to stand on my chest and scream into my face.

MaimeM

That's a sign of true love ā™„ļø

Double-Performance-5

I think itā€™s a self defence mechanism. They donā€™t have the ability to make good decisions with the lack of brain cells so theyā€™re very cuddly and loving. Yes, I do have a brainless ginger boy that requires a lot of cuddles and love, why do you ask?

myssi24

This tracks. One of my cats got knocked up before we got her spayed and had 3 orange boys and 2 calico girls. Needless to say the girls got ALL the brain cells, but the boys were very cuddly. When they were little we used a baby gate to keep them confined to our bedroom and allow the adult cats to come and go. The girls figured out how to climb the gate about 5 days before the boys did. The three boys would line up and watch their sisters climb the gate and all three had this ā€œholy shit what are they doingā€ expression, that would change to ā€œHEEEEEEYYYYY how come they get to run in the other spaceā€

Double-Performance-5

My silly boy doesnā€™t know how to push the bathroom door open. Itā€™s been 4 or 5 years and he still sticks one leg through and waves it while meowing. His assigned tortie took a couple of weeks, max and now opens cupboard and bathroom doors.

Morganlights96

There's gotta be at least 4 brain cells in those pictures combined. Ah, I love orange tabbies. Some of the best cats I've ever had. Still miss my little childhood "Rusty". He was a complete dork with no sense of balance. He was the sweetest boy and loved to give hugs. They're just outgoing and sweet. Although funny enough, there has to be some wild genetics going on there for there to be so many orange mothers. So, probably quite a few orange girl kittens, too. Most orange tabbies are male, and most calico's are female.

MotherSupermarket532

My old orange boy was in the shelter for almost a year before I adopted him, sadly.Ā  He was only 7ish when I got him and we had him for 10 years.

dastardly740

In a rural to semi-rural area, there might also be signifcant demand for barn cats. As in cats that are semi-feral to keep rodent populations around feed down. I think the feral cat rescue that rescues feral cats from urban areas that cannot be homed because they are feral has a waiting list for to adopt them out as barn cats to outlying rural and semi-rural homes.

MyNoseIsLeftHanded

All those adorable orange babies! I miss my orange every day, although he's been gone since 1997. He was an awesome kitty and a troublemaker. Never a dull moment.

Dana07620

You can get one or more from OOP. Another poster linked the [aunt's instagram](https://www.instagram.com/ptsd_funny_farm/)

Mine (well family cat and lived with my parents but I was his human) passed in 2020 at the age of 18, and I ended up in tears looking at the pictures because some of them looked just like him when he was young. I hope those precious babies bring as much love and joy as my Bandit did me. Gonna go snuggle my baby girl cat now (12 year old grey tabby Iā€™ve had since she was 2).

peter095837

Now all of a sudden, I want to look for an orange cat to hug him and call him Garfield.

knittedjedi

>I want to look for an orange cat to hug him and call him Garfield. My eldest called every orange cat in the neighbourhood Garfield when she was younger šŸ±

GimerStick

is this a reference to the viral post? because if not I'll link it, it's quite appropriate

winterseller

im curious which post you're talking about

BoxProfessional6987

A poor mother was looking to borrow a orange cat for a lasagna party as her kids were obsessed with having one with Garfield. They were very young so they latched onto the idea and wouldn't let go. "No I'm not looking to adopt please take the cat back afterwards" Thankfully it worked out and someone will a very calm kitty responded

Houki01

https://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/s/JjcKCnmGBz Link to a post about it where the owner of the orange kitty replied, including photos of the lasagne party they had.

Danivelle

My husband just read this whole and saw the "gleam" in my eye and start sputtering "No, Dani! No!) Orange cats are my favorites!

CorporateDroneStrike

My husband requested that I leave the various kitten subreddits šŸ˜©

Danivelle

You want to see my Bou? Daughter u/Glointhedarkunicorn has pictures posted in r/cats

NathanGa

Iā€™m shocked at how similar they all look. We used to have barn cats - with a high-water mark of 42 at one time - but there were at least six different lineages to speak of. One had a litter of six kittens at one point, with only two distinct patterns but each pattern represented by a short-haired, a medium-haired, and a long-haired kitten.

TraditionalHeart6387

"And for my next trick, I will give birth to a punnet square"

fuurin

this needs to be a flair HAHAHA

sewing_mayhem

For anyone curious, here's the IG for the aunt's farm, which includes some cute cat updates! https://www.instagram.com/ptsd_funny_farm

Outside_Damage_1212

Her tiktok page is the same! PSTD Funny Farm. Tons of videos of the kitties

wintyr27

omg that picture is an absolute GOLDMINE!Ā  er... copper mine?Ā

Master-Departure-525

Orange grove

fuurin

Perfect descriptor

khornflakes529

As someone with 4 foster kittens in my house at the moment, where the hell is this mystical place where cats are adopted so quickly?

Dana07620

Yes, I wondered that myself. Or I watch a YouTube channel and they've got a list of applicants for every kitten. Plus all the money they need to treat the most exotic medical conditions. Must be nice.

Sharikacat

So many orange cats, so few brain cells.

Itwasprettystupid

This stuff can get super out of hand. So, good on them for doing something about it. Where I lived as a teenager, the local barn cat population was so large that they couldn't just catch and neuter, the county had to actually perform a cull, and killed roughly 500 cats, in an effort to rebalance the local ecosystem. It was insane. There were no vermin, birds, or insects, *at all*, and rumor had it they were starting to hunt in packs and take down larger animals. My crazy neighbor said he saw a pack take down a deer, but they probably took down nothing larger than other cats or smaller dogs lol.

snail_tank

i cannot handle the "they're hunting larger animals in packs" thing. holy fuck.Ā

hippywitch

A PTSD retreat with cats sound like a good idea.

Mammoth_Might8171

The whole family (OOP, auntā€¦) sounds incredibly wholesome

Sqwitton

Oh, to be a ginger kitten asleep in a pile of other ginger kittens

JJOkayOkay

My inlaws foster cats and it's kitten season, which resulted in them being up to 27 cats, as of today. Which is a lot more cats than they usually take in, but the little ones have to get large enough to be fixed before they can be adopted out. So for now, their house is a kitten riot. It's a lot more work than it sounds like. Anyhow, they were running low on names, one fateful breakfast, so one of the orange kittens is named Tropicana.

Dana07620

You should give them a baby name book.

Uxie_mesprit

For more orange cats check out freedomfarmhouse on IG/Tiktok. They also inherited a colony of orange cats and adopted some more. They also have a token non orange.

BlackBrantScare

This is best BORU Iā€™ve seen this year and really made my day

SmartQuokka

So many clones!

YesssChem

I know there might be a generation (or a few) of inbreeding but my goodness... I have never seen such a homogenous litter of kitties

pitaenigma

This is a whole grove of kitties. So much orange.

talkmemetome

Tbh orange female cats are quite rare so it is actually a pretty cool find

SeattleTrashPanda

>Ā 2 suspected deadbeat dad kitties Dying

Rough_Homework6913

To be fair, I wouldnā€™t be surprised if the people who sold it genuinely only saw a couple of orange cats at a time and assumed they were all the same orange cats. Lol.

JackTaylorKyree

I died at 2 deadbeat dad kitties. šŸ¤£

tacwombat

I cackled at "2 suspected deadbeat dad kitties". Love a positive and wholesome post, particularly with cats.

MuffinSkytop

God bless all those orange cats, sharing the two brain cells between all of them.

Issyswe

This is like the Weasley family in cat šŸˆ form.

chromepan

Oh wow, OOP found the Jorts manufacturing division of the cat distribution system šŸ˜ Iā€™m super allergic but Iā€™d crawl into that box if I could, theyā€™re so precious

Sunflower-and-Dream

My dream come true, an army of cats.

haleymae106

Omg they're so cute!!

SteampunkCupcake_

Oh my god, Iā€™m on that sub, how did I miss these adorable and hilarious posts?! Thanks for the post, glad I was able to see them this way ā˜ŗļø

Ardara

If it's going to be a ptsd retreat, I think you'll need more catsĀ

TootsNYC

I (in the US) had a colleague once from England who was very excited to be able to adopt a cat; from what he said, there arenā€™t a lot of strays in England and not a lot of kittens. Certainly not the supply that our NYC shelters had. Iā€™ll have to ask my current UK-based colleagues what their experience has been.. A Google search says there are plenty, especially in cities, so Iā€™m not sure what his experience was. I will say that I think orange cats are easier to adopt out. I wanted an orange cat this time and gave in and took a brown/gray tabby

slendermanismydad

That was an extremely strange conversation I had with a friend in Poland that said she had to wait six months to get a new cat and compete with others to get one and I was going, but they just show up?

AhmedTheSalty

ā€œAll orangeā€ God have mercy

LilOrchidJenny

So stinkin' cute! Looking at them makes me feel allĀ Elmyra like.

LionsDragon

This entire family sounds amazing. <3 Also, as the proud Meowmy to a kittygirl born in similar circumstances...for gods' sake spay and neuter! My girl's birth mother had/has a history of abandoning litters. One kitten decided that Out sucked and followed me indoors, her half-sister lives in a local gift shop judging the customers, and another of her half-siblings roams my neighborhood and is absolutely terrified of my girl (she got the Maine Coon size from their grandpa but her outdoor sibling did not!) Those are the only ones I can confirm survived. HOWEVER, nearly every feral in my area is a tuxedo because of that litter-abandoning hussy. Oh, and they all hate other cats including each other.

GranGurbo

When you need a cat, the cat distribution system finds you a match. When the cat distribution system needs human help, it finds you 4 litters of kittens.

Quothhernevermore

It probably isn't hard to get rid of female orange cats, they're very rare! I'm so glad that these kitties have someone to take care of them now :)

500CatsTypingStuff

What a wholesome post! Thank you!

yavanna12

We bought a farm with a couple barn cats. Previous owner was feeding it daily because she felt bad for it. We noticed our barn was full of mice. So. We stopped feeding the cats. Lot less mice now.Ā

DamnitGravity

So many kitties, I wanna cuddle them all at the same time!

Jsmith2127

My mother had two adult female cats, that both became pregnant around the same time. One cat had her kittens in my bedroom closet, and the other, in a hall closet. There were about 14 kittens between them

PsychedelicRick

All that orange and only 1 brain cell in the bunch

viiriilovve

Whatā€™s the aunt TikTok I really want more orange cat pics vids šŸ˜

ratfacemagee123

Born in apple baskets šŸ˜ā¤ļø

djseifer

21 orange cats and not a single brain cell between them. šŸ˜ø Good on OOP for finding homes for all the ginger kitties.

goddessofthecats

lol Iā€™ve been hoping for an update on this . Those kittens are so damn cute. So much orange

DavesCleverDisguise

> My family purchased a farm that was badly neglected, and have been working diligently to bring it back to life So they're playing real-life Stardew Valley

Orphan_Izzy

Iā€™m interested in the retreat for ptsd. I have C-PTSD and I have always thought this kind of thing would be amazing since no one gets what itā€™s like unless you have it. Itā€™s very hard to find help. Iā€™m so interested in this idea!

allis_in_chains

Oh. I have PTSD and I love orange cats. I found their instagram page and wish I lived in Canada now so I could go.

Cheapie07250

I hope the name of the retreat is somehow touches on all the orange kitties. I also hope they keep a few kitties and train them as therapy kitties. What a wonderfully responsible family!

sorenelf

You seriously canā€™t get cuter than a box of marmalade. Bless you for looking after them and finding them homes.

LoveforLevon

Many areas have programs for spay and neuter especially for feral colonies...this definitely fits the bill...which will be huge!

thefinalgoat

Yep. Those are incest babies.

OrangeAugust

Wow, thereā€™s only a 20% chance for an orange cat to be female and it sounds like you have a bunch of them!
