I was Ethically Non-Monogamous for almost a decade. People donāt understand just *how hard it is to have a successful throuple relationship*. There are traps you wouldnāt even imagine. When Donald Rumsfeld talked about āunknown unknownsā, he was talking about āproblems youāll face in a throuple.ā The joy youāll get from another person in your relationship is additive; the problems youāll face are multiplicative. When one partner has a problem, *all partners have a problem*. And if your partners have partners and those partners have problems, guess what? ALL PARTNERS HAVE PROBLEMS. Shit ripples the fuck out. I wonāt cast any moral judgements on the practice (thatās a whole other ball of wax), but in all my time as ENM I never saw one throuple that wasnāt a hurricane of drama. Honestly, I hope this couple finds their throuple. They may fuck around but theyāll definitely find out.
You know, I always wondered about that part. Just *two* people getting along 24/7 gets messy and difficult. How tf you gonna add another woman (seems like it's mostly women getting added) and not have drama. What's the most common issues that came up? I'd assume jealousy.
Jealousy and insecurity are tied for number 1. Jealousy is a real bitch of an emotion because most people donāt initially have the tools to manage it and all of a sudden itās right there and the stakes are skyyyyy high. So you get a bunch of people who have no idea how to wrangle this really powerful emotion that is showing up *constantly.* Therapy can help but thereās no getting around it - sooner or later everyone has to learn how to manage jealousy and itās not fun. Iād wager 70-80% of couples that open up flame out within a year or two due to not being able to manage jealousy. I could write a whole book on how Iāve seen jealousy show up in ENM. Itās a pernicious little shit. And thatās just the most common issue. Then you have the really boring sounding but just as tricky stuff like partner management, time management, financial management, the list goes on. Thereās a reason Iām no longer ENM. Love is indeed infinite but time, money and emotional bandwidth are not.
I mean, I get it. Rent is too damn high these days. Split it three ways.

A few weeks after I transferred to NYC from Texas, my cousin and I were walking the streets of downtown Brooklyn. We passed a coffee shop and sitting at the front was a white couple.
