Had near exact symptom last year with G42 M240i. Car had ~2000 mi on it when it occurred. Just started one day, randomly. I do not know exactly what it was, but believe it was brakes related. Sounded like metal on metal, harsh squeal from outside of car (not motor). I did a succession of HARD stops and it went away, never to return. As I am not sure the actual cause in your case, YMMV with my fix. Also, perhaps related, but unsure: I had a knocking noise at low speed, especially in the mornings, coming from what sounded like front suspension/steering rack. Turned out to be bad tie rods and is a known issue per my BMW dealer and they were replaced under warranty. I have not had either issue return. Hope this helps in some way.

Hey man, i just gave this a shot and so far it seems so work. Car started doing it again and i did 3 full emergency stops, then drove another 15mins and nothing so far!

Glad to hear. It certainly freaked me out hearing that noise from a brand new car.

Did about the same trip today, sound came back just as yesterday after 40mins of driving. Tried another hard stop on the brakes and it was gone again for the next 15mins, then parked the car. So weird.

I’d take it in. It’s definitely brake related and that isn’t something to mess with.

Thanks for replying. Can’t really say i hear a knocking noise on low speeds to be honest. Will try the hard stops on the brakes.

I think the knock was unrelated but wanted to mention it just in case. It wasn’t constant. Mostly noticed coming out of driveway and <10 mph steering. Hopefully you don’t have that issue. If you do, tell them to check the tie rods. That’s what it is.
