Ensure your A/C is ready with a clean filter. Set up a mister outside or mister/fan. Close the curtains/blinds to keep the light out. Stay hydrated. Wear sunscreen if you are out.

silentvictory472

HVAC guy here. Change your filters everyone!!! We get so many calls because the coil freezes due to lack of airflow. Open all your registers in the home as well. It is a huge myth that closing certain vents will increase airflow. The systems are designed to move air to the whole house and if you chock that off, you can risk not moving enough air quickly enough across the coil and it can freeze up. Change your filter and open your vents. Keep blinds closed and understand that after 95° systems often won’t keep the temp you have set.

wordnerd1023

Adding make sure your condenser coils are clean or at least not coated in dust/debris. So many calls for dirty coils. And if you need a service call, put in the request NOW for whenever they can fit you in. Don't call next Thursday because you can't take it any more. (and godspeed to all the techs out there, as a former dispatcher...bless you all)

ShenmeNamaeSollich

The ~1/2” wire & paper air filter in the garage or is there something on the A/C unit itself to clean/change? Dude last summer I think just hosed it off - is that what you mean?

silentvictory472

The mesh/wire filter in the metal cabinet needs to be replaced. Gently rinsing off the outdoor unit is good too. Do not use any high pressure water on the air conditioner because it could bend the metal fins.

Freeheel4life

Look at Mr. Bigshot with his "AC". Box fan in the window guy at night and shut the house down during the day. It's a great excuse to BBQ more during the summer so that you don't add to the heat of the house with the oven as well. It does get rougher when the nighttime lows don't swing low though.

USBlues2020

Beautifully stated ♥️

robgoblin17

My house becomes a cave—all blinds and curtains are shut. We make sure our ac is good to go ahead of the heat, we have fans at home too. We don’t use the oven, we minimize opening the door. And we have a plan in place should our AC go out.

treehugginggranola

Go to the river!

mikmeh

A oh riva!

McLuvin208

This type of heat wave is fairly normal for a week or two during the summer here. Keep blinds closed, try to reduce the use of ovens and electronics that put off a lot of heat. Your A/C is generally made to keep your home ~30 degrees cooler than it is outside (depending on your home and other factors). Buy a box fan before the heat wave hits if you don’t have one to keep cool because generally they sell out most places

Wide-Adhesiveness838

Always seems to come the week after the 4th too.

juliagreenillo

I'm not doing anything different because I work from home and don't leave my house almost ever 🫣 I do gardening and yard work after 8 or 9pm if I do need to go outside. But seriously, drink lots of water. Wear sunglasses and a sun hat if you have to go outside. Sunscreen. Stay in the shade. They also sell neck cooling towels/wraps that you soak in cold water and put around your neck to keep you cool. Those would work indoors or outdoors and you can easily find them on Amazon. Escape to the river for a swim or to soak your feet in the super cold water. If you desperately need to escape the heat, go to the grocery store and go in the beer coolers. The Albertsons on State has a walk-in cooler and WinCo does too.

PhantomFace757

Growing up in the southwest....just wait till dark to do everything. You are going to get roasted faster than a Trisolarian if the light touches you. sizzzzzzler is not just a restaurant, it's a way of life.

Smart_Alex

Hi friend, I am also sensitive to the heat. Here's some things that you can do to help keep comfortable. -Dont introduce heat into the house: eat things that don't require you to turn on the stove or oven. We do a lot of meals that a raw, maybe with deli meat, cheese, or rotisserie chicken for protein. We also use the microwave, air fryer, rice cooker, and kettle as much as possible. - Get the house as cool as possible during the night. If it gets cool enough, which many days it will not, open the house when the temp drops below 72. Set up a fan in the window to maximize air flow. - Prevent solar gain. Others have covered this well. Keep blinds drawn. If possible, shade your house. We use a pop up tent to keep the sun off the back sliding glass door. - Cool yourself down to sleep. I slowly wipe myself down with a washcloth and cold watee before bed. You can also use one of those giant, clay filled icepacks to cool down the bed. I like to put it in the pillow case. - Don't go out in the heat. If at all possible, stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day. If you are able, check in on friends, family, and neighbors (especially if they are elderly or disabled) to make sure that they are doing ok.

cb_cooper

I’m packing up and moving to CDA in the middle of it; and also staying hydrated.

Putting up blackout curtains

RegularDrop9638

Scraping together all my dollar monies to pay for my AC and water bill. Buying ice cream.

chumpsteak

Been here my whole life and this is pretty normal for a week or two in the summer. Stay inside or go to the lake but be sure to Sunscreen up and keep the dogs off the hot sidewalk!

FairPlatform6

I wouldn’t over think it. Drink water and use air conditioning.

buttered_spectater

Tillamook ice cream is $2.99 at Albertsons. That's my method of preparing.

cm-badvibes

I was born in Arizona, but I've lived in Boise for the past 10 years. My family still in Phoenix so I always just make sure I get sunscreen. Always have my reusable water bottle if I'm going to a friend's house or work. I also have an umbrella to avoid the sun mostly. Like the previous post said, just make sure you replace/ clean your a/c filters. I've bought black out curtains so they don't heat up in my room.

cm-badvibes

Oh and make sure you don't leave your phone out in your car or in your backyard. Excessive heat can make your phone not function properly.

chapteri

So you basically moved to a place with freezing summers 😂. Not gonna lie. Phoenix gets so hot it makes me nauseous just walking to the pool IoI.

yodpilot

Lots of water and bubbly water. You can't perceive water loss in a hot dry situation vs hot/humid. Stay hydrated. Other than that, press on

DorkothyParker

Feeling grateful to have air conditioning. But I would definitely have water on hand and maybe some pedialite (or similar) if you are sensitive to heat. We survived a 107 day in Seattle with no AC. I made a little cooler using a fan and a block of ice. It sucked. I honestly think I won't notice the heat most of the time, accept riding my bike home after work. That will be super shitty.

turbineseaplane

Cover the windows is essential -- don't let it get super hot inside to begin with

SpiritualEffective79

Pick up beer

ChaosInTheSkies

If you're worried about "temps like this" you are *not* going to like the rest of July 😂

[deleted]

[удалено]

Demented-Alpaca

His point is that these temps are pretty normal. Between now and late August high 90s to low 100s is more or less the norm.

yodpilot

Correct

NoLongerNeeded

It happens every year though. July is almost always over 100F most of the month.

[deleted]

Interestingly, the July mean daily maximum T for Boise is only 92.7 degrees Fahrenheit according to NOAA data. The average monthly max is 104.5, which we are expected to exceed for a consecutive 4 days this month. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boise,_Idaho#Climate Still, it won't exceed the all-time July record of 111. Yes, it gets hot here. How hot is hot enough to be noteworthy? IDK

ChaosInTheSkies

Yeah, exactly. I don't know why they're surprised, that's normal this time of year. I mean I guess it's *technically* a heatwave but it's not like nobody expected it or hasn't ever dealt with anything like it before.

hamsterontheloose

Maybe they haven't lived here long. This is my 5th summer here, and thankfully it'll be my last. It's way too hot here

Bob_Chris

😂 Don't move to Arizona that's for sure. Last year was over 110 every day of July, and many over 115, and didn't drop below about 95 at night.

PupperPuppet

"But it's a dry heat!"

Bob_Chris

It's a dry heat here in Boise too - and way more tolerable.

hamsterontheloose

I lived on the cali/az border for 2 years, and it would get to to 130 some days. 125 was really common, and had, it never got below 95. My car didn't have working ac towards the end, so I had to run my errands my 7am so I wouldn't die lol

brucesloose

Is it though? 2 or 3 years ago there was an outstanding June that was 100+ everyday, but I haven't seen July quite hit that yet.

[deleted]

Sorry, what is the joke?

cadaverously

This isn’t a heat wave. This is Boise weather.

RustyClawHammer

This

ChaosInTheSkies

The joke is that this is normal Boise weather and it's not going to cool off for a *while.* We live in a desert, I don't know what you expected.

mcdisney2001

Why be a dick? They're clearly not used to our weather and asked an honest question. You \*do\* have the ability to just not respond if you're not going to be helpful.

Ethereal_Chittering

Am I the only person who read “I grew up here” in their post???

Classiest_Strapper

I’m from the desert, move slower outside. Breezy clothing, large icy drinks, sunscreen, and a wide ass brim hat. Your work doesn’t allow shorts? Fuckem. It’ll be fine. Blast that AC and find some shade. Source: Grew up in a place that usually had 120F summers, hottest I’ve seen was 140F.

mittens1982

You grew up here and you can't take this heat? Look at the Mexicans mowing lawns in long sleeve shirts, and straw hats. They can take the heat for sure

Politicallywoke

You grew up here? This happens every year, I would think you’d get used to it.

ThereelmeRick

Top off with the jeep. Hawaiian shirts. Water bottles stashed everywhere. Clean A.C filters lol

poppy_20005

Make sure to drink lots of water. Make sure your ac is functioning well. Buy a fan or two if you don’t have any. Open your windows at night. Close your blinds during the day.

ShenmeNamaeSollich

Arizona kid. Boise today is starting to feel like Tucson did 25yrs ago, where 2-4 solid wks over 100 was normal. 1. If you're already feeling thirsty, you are already dehydrated. Don't wait until then to drink. Carry an insulated Thermoflask-type water bottle and drink throughout the day especially if you're out & about. 2. Don't *only* drink water. Drink electrolytes too especially if you're outdoors & sweating. Failing to replace those salts while over-hydrating is dangerous. Have Gatorade or add tablets or something like Mio drops every 3rd or 4th bottle. 3. If you see someone who needs help or water, give it to them. Learn [the symptoms and treatments for heat exhaustion and heat stroke](https://www.weather.gov/safety/heat-illness). 4. Adopt a coyote's schedule. Do most stuff early morning \~5-10am, and after dusk \~8-10pm. Otherwise stay indoors/in shade & not doing strenuous outdoor activity from \~10-4pm. 5. Find ways to stay cool during the day. Go to the movies. Go to the ice or roller rink. Go to the mall or out for ice cream. Wear shorts to work. Go to the pool or river but wear sunscreen & get some shade time. 6. Vehicle Safety: -- **NEVER leave young kids or pets alone in a vehicle**, even in the shade, even with windows down, even if it's running with A/C (because what if it stops or they turn it off & can't turn it back on again?). It can reach \~120F+ inside and your kid & pets die. -- Get/use reflective sunshades for your car windows. -- Leave windows open a crack when you park (ideally in the shade), and open doors/windows fully when you get back in to start it up before getting in. Obviously don't leave valuables in sight if you're not used to leaving windows open. -- Be careful of metal seat belt buckles and hot steering wheels/controls that have been in the sun.

Opp-Leo

I'm sorry, a heat wave? Is that what we are calling July now? It's like this every year.

kztlve

Long-term forecast has 10+ days of 100+ heat peaking \~110. This isn't normal. We always have 100+ heat in July, but this is something else

Demented-Alpaca

No... It's pretty par for the course. Might be a few degrees warmer but, growing up here, it's basically normal summer weather. It's in the hotter end of it but it's pretty much normal

kztlve

I also grew up here. The record for most 100+ days in a row is 9, and we only hit 110 once about every 5 years.

Demented-Alpaca

So you're saying you agree with me that this is pretty much normal... A forecast of 10 100+ days doesn't mean anything. The weather forecast is basically a wild ass guess past about 5 days.

mcdisney2001

You're not silly--you're just new to this type of weather! You won't need to buy water--our city water supply never has issues. It's just hot and dry here in general. As mentioned, just make sure your AC has a fresh filter on it and is working well. If you rent, ask the landlord if they provide AC filters. If not, it's cheap to buy one yourself. The one thing we'll have a shortage of during the summer is AC repair people. Don't leave pets outside. Dogs should be kept indoors when not out exercising, and cats should have access to come in even if they're indoor/outdoor. I also leave dishes of water outside for feral cats (though not at my current home because it's not allowed and there are some HUGE colonies in the area that would take over if I did that). And just make sure you're drinking throughout the day. Also, my skin and hair get dried out, so I use lotion more often, and lip balm. If you're new to Idaho, buying a humidifier is a good idea--dry air here all year round, even in the winter, so if you find your eyes getting irritated and your lungs hacking from dry air, a humidifier can help. As for your car, make sure it has coolant in it! Also a good idea to keep some bottled water in the car if you leave the metro area. Other than that, just grin and bear it! Stay cool, stay shaded, and enjoy the sunshine!

[deleted]

Thank you! Hope you have a chill holiday

carboncarmelo

It been getting in the high 90’s/100 the first week of July for at least the last 15 years. Business as usual.

Pleasant_Union_426

Leaving.

[deleted]

Planning on a really high electricity bill because I’ll be blasting that AC

[deleted]

No plans except blast the AC

Live-Bowl4920

Staying home, love my AC lol...aside from going to work where we also have AC, we will not be doing any outdoor activities, but stay hydrated!! lol 100 next wednesday? thats the hottest its been here since i moved 5 years ago!

I will be playing in a softball tournament next Wednesday. Pray for me

ShadowIG

If you grew up here, then how do you not know the weather patterns in each season? Were you in a coma the last decade?

Wild_Opinion928

In AZ its been 116 most of the week and is supposed to be 120. Where do you spend the majority of your time? If its indoors then not much to worry about. If you’re outside start hydrating now. Avoid alcohol and add things like Electrolit, coconut water or fruit infused water is good. Wear breathable clothes (cotton) and keep your skin covered.

Piss-frog

I grew up here, and yes it would get this hot during the summer? Did you not play outside a lot during the summer? This is normal. Go back and look at the weather patterns on weather.cool for our area the last 30 years. Every summer has a scorching week or two or three haha. Go jump in the cold ass river

BlNG-BONG

It’s always gotten this hot… grew up here, nothing new. I remember having football practice in weeks of 100+ weather. I would never forget such torture.

mittens1982

My secret is I go into a stores walk in beer cave, take a book, build a chair out of cases of beer, find your desired beer and others you might like to try. sit in said chair, start tasting and sampling the merchandise while reading book. When the manager walks in, just promise to pay and point to the newly created collection of empties you have corralled in the corner; of course you have named it the pile of financial accountability/inventory and hand them(take that pronoun use idaho!) your payment card(make sure it won't bounce). Promise to clean up when you leave during the late evening shift and you should be good. Any questions?

BabyJesusBukkake

Yes. Where does the pee go?

ShenmeNamaeSollich

Back in the empty bottles and restocked with the rest of the IPAs, obviously.

Jnewton1018

Where are you from that you’ve never experienced this heat before? I’d like to move there, haha. But seriously, this is normal for Boise. There is usually always one week or two with temps over 100 degrees.

seamusoldfield

We're going to McCall for a few days. Still going to be in the mid 90s there. At least we can get out on the lake and putz around. Our relatives own all the water toys.

rebeldogman2

In 2021 it was close to 110 for like a week. It gets to these temps regularly out here.

No_Antelope5022

It's summer, so....

chapteri

The rivers will be packed! It’s not an unreasonable question to ask. We now have EV taxing our electric grid. Who knows what could happen. The suggestion to open your windows at night is good. Only run appliances after dark also helps. If your fridge isn’t full, fill it up with gallons of water because once it’s cold, your fridge doesn’t have to work so hard to keep it cool. Make sure you have water and sunscreen in your car.

Hot-N-Spicy-Fart

>We now have EV taxing our electric grid LMAO

chapteri

What part of this is funny to you? You are now living surrounded by Californians. The land of rolling blackouts. The explosion of population growth in the Treasure Valley has not been met with infrastructure, because… infrastructure takes time and money. I 100% agree that this upcoming week of heat is no big deal, but things are changing. Climate change, over population, etc. People should consider that it’s not just that this is normal. It may be normal for here, but HERE, isn’t used to the number of people , or electric cars. Even if it’s not that many. Fully charging an EV battery requires the same amount of electricity needed to power a home during peak energy use times. However, EV charging is a concentrated pull of energy over an extended period, which can add stress to the local power grid by increasing the amount of electricity a utility has to provide. Additionally, the neighborhood transformer needs adequate capacity to handle the increased load. EV charging can shorten the lifespan of transformers by straining and overloading their capacity if they are not matched to a neighborhood’s energy needs.

Hot-N-Spicy-Fart

#LMAO

runmtbboi

1) We’re not experiencing anything close to overpopulation. It may seem like it after a decade of depressed long-term rental and new housing starts along with an inability to plan transit for the future, but we’re not overpopulated in terms of environment and infrastructure. 2) Idaho has an extremely stable power grid, we’re a net exporter. Even if we are lacking commercial nuclear, we’ve got wonderful hydro and solar power. Our reservoirs are full and sun shining means solar will be at peak efficiency. 3) Considering the first two points, the number of EVs around should have you concerned about wear and tear on the roads before you’re worried about draw on residential power. The only way you’re going to experience loss of AC is if your system hasn’t been maintained. This is a great opportunity to harp on your landlord if you have one, well-maintained HVAC is one of the few rights tenants enjoy in this state.

chapteri

It sounds like you know a lot about this so I will trust you cause I really don’t. I’m just going by the traffic. And the general chatter that EV put a strain on the grid. I wasn’t meaning to be dramatic, but Biden DID just give a speech about how heat kills more people than any other weather event. So IoI. Anyway thanks for your thoughtful response.
